THE planned opening of the Baywest Mallhas been postponed by amonth andwill nowhappen middle of May.

Gavin Blows, managing director of Bay-west, said at a business breakfast of theSouth African Council of Shopping Centresthat this was decided to ensure that every-thing is operational from day one.The mall, built at a cost of almost R2 bil-

lion, is the first phase of the bigger BaywestCity development. It is similar to CenturyCity in Cape Town in that it is a city withina city.

According to Blows, among the biggestchallenges thus far were the strikes in thecivil and steel industries, as well as dealingwith local governmentswhosehigh turnoverof staff caused delays in decision making. He also highlighted the high rates and tax-

es as well as electricity costs in Nelson Man-dela Bay as a challenge for doing businessand which will have a negative impact oneconomic growth in the area. Locally thesecosts are double those charged at some of theother areas, such as Cape Town and Johan-nesburg, where they have developed malls.Construction of themall started inNovem-

ber 2013 and has created 3 000 employmentopportunities.

The mall will have 250 tenants of which85% is national. According toBlows, the firstfloor will feature a high fashion node withbrands that have never been in Port Eliza-beth before.Themall’s Fun Factorywill have Ster Kin-

ekor theatres, electronic ten pin bowling andan ice rink.By lateApril the first phaseof thenewroad

networkwill be complete. This includes link-ingWalker Drive with Baywest Mall and on-ramps and off-ramps to the N2 freeway. The second phase of the road network up-

grades – the bridge connectingWalker Drivewith Bridgemeade and Rowallan Park at OldCapeRoad –will be completed by September.

To dealwith the increase inmall robberiesexperienced countrywide, the security bud-get for the mall has been doubled. Securitymeasures include thermal cameras, as wellas technology to scan car registrations, forchecking on the police’s database. The residential component of the Baywest

City developmentwill be launched at the endof the year. This will comprise 250 houses costing be-

tween R800 000 and R1.5 million.Construction of the lifestyle centre, an-

chored by Virgin Active, has commenced, aswell as the office park and vehicle showroomswhich are expected to be completed inSeptember next year.

Angry residents also said the councillor didnot care for their well-being and instead choseto assist residents from KwaNdokwenza se-ction.They accused Nombiba of ensuring 90% em-

ployment opportunities for KwaNdokwenzaresidents and housing ownership, among oth-ers.Nombiba denied these accusations as well as

that of kicking Tshawe out.“I am the one that opened the office for uT-

shawe to comeandworkhereeveryWednesdaybecause I saw that he has passion for issues re-lating to houses. I did not kick him out of office.Tshawe is asked to work with only the WardCommittee - something that he refuses to do,”CllrNombiba told the angry residentswhile po-lice looked on.He also denied allegations that he was choos-

ingcertainmembersofthecommunityoveroth-ers.“That’s not true. We always ensure that job

opportunities are evenly spread in the ward.

Anyone who thinks otherwise must bringproof,” Nombiba said.AWard Committeemember, Nombulelo Nce-

tezo, said “We are a legally instituted structurewith the powers to call anyone in the ward toorder.Theproblemhere is thatTshawedoesnotwant to account. He was working alone beforewewere elected. Now,we are there andmust berecognised. All we wanted to know is, how didhe come to his conclusions in the case withouthearing from the other complainant (the olderman)?”Tshawe said hewas called to ameeting by the

WardCommittee andwas told thathis approachto the matter was one-sided and wrong.“I refused to listen to that. All I’m saying is,

I am accountable tomembers of the communityforwhich Iwork. I’ve got all the legal documentsto prove my case. I wonder what is it that theyare basing their arguments on,” said Tshawe. When asked by Express Indaba whether he

would heed the councillor’s call to go back tooffice andwork, Tshawe said “Yes, but not to ac-count to the people that want me to work forthem”.

According to SAPS Spokesperson CaptainAndre Beetge the stations took part in the op-eration from 10am and 2pm, and included theK9 and mounted units. The focus of the operation was on stolen

property, drugs, alcohol abuse, firearms anddomestic violence, including sexual offencesagainst women and children.Beetge said the importance of conducting

the operation on Fridaywas largely due to thefact thatmost employed people had their “pay-day” and that paid people flocked to businessareas and shopping malls to conduct businesson this day.“In the past we have seen that criminals

take advantage of “pay-day” scenarios to tar-

get potential victims,” said Beetge. He said police set up two vehicle check

points while foot patrols, horseback patrolsand dog patrols took place closer to the majorshopping malls. At the shoppingmallsmembers also handed

out crime awareness pamphlets dealing withdomestic violence as well as a number of safe-ty hints and tips.Nomajor crime incidents took place during

the period of the operation, according to Beet-ge, who added, however, that a 43-year-oldmale was arrested for selling liquor withouta licence. He was trading a shebeen without a licence

TWO local small businessmen havegone from fixing shoes to manufac-turing their own shoe brand, tak-ing their business to new heightsby enrolling in The Hope Factory’sEnterprise and Supplier Develop-ment mentorship programme.

Sibongiseni Mnikini and Masi-bulele Matshaya, have come a longway having started BambananiFresh Art three years ago.

Based in Port Elizabeth, the com-pany manufactures casual genuineleather boat shoes. With the smallbusiness still operating from a con-tainer store in the township, theyhave managed to secure their big-gest contract with a Johannesburgshoe retailer – Dope Store.

The duo said Dope Store ordereda dozen pairs from BambananiFresh Art after meeting them at theMotherwell Urban Renewal Pro-gramme. “We are selective aboutwhich stores we’ll supply shoes to

because we have a niche marketand not all retailers will carry ourproducts well,” said Mnikini.

Currently, they make boat shoesonly and are planning to expandthe range to include a formal foot-wear range for men. The shoes are100% hand-made and customersget to choose their own materialswhich in turn determines the price– this is a novel concept in footwearmanufacture and is proving to bepopular with clients who wantsomething different.

“Our success is a big surprise tous. We’ve realised that people wantto help us and this is because of thenetworking opportunities we’vebeen exposed to,” said Masibulele.

The business partners are re-ceiving valuable skills trainingfrom The Hope Factory’s mentor-ship programme – this includesmarketing skills, how to grow salesand improving their book-keepingskills.

Mnikini admits, “When wejoined The Hope Factory, we were

looking for a mentor because wedidn’t know how to run a properbusiness. The Hope Factory hashelped us get our books in orderand we have now employed an ac-countant.”

Through word of mouth the busi-ness is growing and they are ex-pecting more orders. The companywebsite has proven to be a goodplatform to tell buyers about theirproducts, but they plan to continueusing social media as marketingtools.

WHAT can you do when you needwork experience but employment isscarce?

Two Motherwell students solvedthis problem by going back to school.

LelethuFatyiandVuyisaniMonco(both 23), who are studying HumanResource (HR) Management at EastCape Midlands College with N6 Qual-ification, were faced with the mam-moth task of finding 18 months of em-ploymentexperiencethroughintern-ship.

“We heard of GRADIMA, an insti-tution in Motherwell which helpsgraduates, diplomates and matricu-lants find employment, internshipsand learnerships. We came and wereaccepted,” said Fatyi.

GRADIMA found them an intern-

ship at Coselelani High in Mother-well.

“Here at Coselelani High we do ad-ministration work. It is not really inline with what we studied, but it isbetter than nothing,” said Fatyi.

“We regard ourselves as lucky be-causewedidnotspendmuchtimebe-fore finding this opportunity.

“Many of our fellow students andfriends are still struggling to belinked to any job because jobs are re-ally scarce,” said Monco.

Monco said she studied HR be-cause she liked working with peopleand found the discipline attractiveand the salary opportunities pleas-ing.

The duo agreed that they were pre-pared to start at the bottom but bothknow that they are destined for up-ward mobility.

“We are getting work experience.

That’s all that matters,” Fatyi said. She said the stipend they received

each month was helping them withtheir needs. Though not enough, sheconceded that the money was alsomaking a difference at home.

Fatyi would, however, urge com-panies to extend the 18-months in-ternship to two to three years be-cause employers ask for that lengthof working experience.

“I would like to urge other youngpeople always to look out for oppor-tunities. Even though they arescarce, they are there in the longrun,” said Monco.

Staff members were trained in the useof the equipment and how to assist thevisually impaired.

“The visually impaired have a consti-tutional right to access these services. The project in the Eastern Cape has beenso successful that we are hoping it willeventually be rolled out across the coun-try,” said Mahanjana.

One of the people to have benefitedfrom the use of the Minilib is SonwabileDlakavu, from Lusikisiki in the OR Tam-bo District.

Dlakavu represented his region dur-ing the general knowledge quizzes host-ed by DSRAC for Minilib users in theEastern Cape during the Library Week.
