A thing considered as a unit or an element of a larger thing, quantity.

Piece

A mass, slab, or crust of a solidified or compressed substance.

Cake

Informal Something(a method) very easy to do.

Piece of cake

Page 4: Piece of Cake

An apartment dwelling to me is just like a cake.Different size slice is just like different spaces in the dwelling. My concept is to let each dwelling holder donate a piece of their “cake”,so all the pieces of cakes actually combine together as a new cake, that it can improve the quality of living in the next 30 years.

Page 5: Piece of Cake

Just give out a part of your private space, the feedback can be tremendous.

Smaller, but bigger!

PAST FUTURE

Smaller, but bigger!

This is a typical Taiwan’s building type which locate on Sec. 4, Zhongxiao E. Rd., Taipei City. These kind of building are commonly mixed-use with offices and dewellings.Because of the mixed-use situation, the building loses the possibility to become a friendly community with nice public facilities. In my opinion, however, these kind of building have the perfect condition to run a new type of dwelling’s public space.

First, the building have 2 core and 4 room partitions. The size of each partition is 343.7 sq. metre, 180.4 sq. metre, 178.3 sq. metre, 185.1 sq. metre. Most of the Taiwan’s dwelling have the same problem, more private space, and less public space.Even when a community has lots of great public facilities, they will be lack of maintenance fee and fall into disuse.

41.6 sq. metre

40.9 sq. metre

42.3 sq. metre

My proposal is that every householder donate a part of their private space, then after combine all these donate spaces, it actually combine and become a huge public space for all the residence to use.You just have to give up a few space of yours then you can gain a lot back! The size of each partition donate space is 41.6 sq. metre, 41.6 sq. metre, 40.9 sq. metre, 42.3 sq. metre.

Page 9: Piece of Cake

You might ask how all these require area number come out.First, the minium comfortable depth of a space is 2.5m.Second, the circulation width is 1m, so combine these two requirements, you can easily outline the new public area out, and it’s like a slice of the building.

Page 10: Piece of Cake

Originally building 1st floor side that face Zhongxiao E. Rd. has arcade,so the 1st floor side is pushed in, the actual public area is from 2nd to 12th floor.

Page 11: Piece of Cake

Due to studying the original situation, the commerce spaces and advertisements only exist from 1st to 4th floor,so I can divide the new public space into two parts. One is for rental to gain the cost of future public utilities maintenance fee, which is 2nd to 4th floor.Another part is from 5th floor to 12th floor, here is where all the nice public spaces and facilities are.

?So instead of keep on building new dwellings, I think future Taiwan’s dwelling prospect should be reconstruct the old ones.Keep the original construction, then go through a little bit renewing, insert new public spaces and facilities to improve living quality, so the old dwelling can keep maintain and it turns out to be a much more sustainable strategy.

Lots of different functions spaces start appearing in the new slice of public space, and residence can start rethinking what space to them is important, and what is not.For example, some people seldom cook, then maybe they don’t need a big kitchen, they can sometimes cook in the public kitchen, and their original kitchen can transform into a reading room, or else.

2nd to 4th floor is the space for commercial use.The residence can collect the rent to cover the maintenance fee of the new public facilities.

5th to 12th floor are where the public facilities at.Besides some typical space which an apartment dwelling has, it also can import some green space and new public facilities.

Besides totally open space like balcony only need to add fence to it, other three kinds of different spaces with vary attributes need specific skins to cover them. For public space, the skin is divide into vary areas, and infix with clear glass. For half-private space, the skin is construct with panels, so when users need some privacy, they can move the blind panels to cover the space. For private space, the skin is fill with different scale of rectangular holes, so people from the outside can hardly see what’s happening in the interior, however people in the inside still can have view to the outside.

01.There’s a space(a piece of cake) ready to be divided.02. The space is divide into vary parts due to different program the residence setup.03. In order to let the residence can see different angle of the Zhongxiao E. Rd., the skin start to have some rise and fall.04. Define different spaces different attributes, then use vary skin to identify them.
