    Question 3

    PLAGIARISM

According to the Wikipedia, Plagiarism is defined in dictionaries as the wrongful

appropriation, close imitation and publication of another authors language, ideas, or expression

and representation of them as their own work.

In the academic world, plagiarism is considered a serious offence. Plagiarism has been

cultivated since the earlier days. So, the victims are the students today. The challenge comes

when they enter higher education institutions, when they are ask to do references and citation,

    they will be shocked.

Plagiarism is a constant issue in the higher institution level and universities as students

create many papers using a large amount of research in a small amount of time. Apart from that,

another reason for cheating is because very few students had mastery of the English language. It

is difficult for them to think and write well enough English to pass without plagiarizing. The

pressure students may feel forces them into copying and pasting information from other sources

through the accessibility of new technology (the internet). Students turning in their plagiarized

work is unfair to those who do their own work. Unlike the other students, those who plagiarize

may never learn to take important notes, evaluate sources, select proper quotes or even giving

credits to others for their ideas and words, Hence preventing them from fulfilling their full

    potential.

On the other hand, plagiarism has its own advantages but we need to look at it from the

view of the plagiarist .Beside profiting themselves at the expense of others, plagiarist also save

time in doing their own research and their own thinking. When you save time, you will definitely

save energy as plagiarism are merely copying and pasting information from other sources.

There are several ways for a teacher or tutors to detect plagiarism. Firstly, students

choices of sources are frequently unoriginal. Teachers may notice that other students work is

similar. Secondly, teachers could easily see-through a students work and know whether its the

students own voice. How do lectures know? From daily conversation, a student could hardly

put together three English words together suddenly hands-in a perfect well done English

assignment. Third, students carelessness in choosing inappropriate, inaccurate or even off-topic

sources. Fourth, lecturers may use an online plagiarism detector. The act of plagiarism could

bring up to punishment such as failing grade on the particular assignment. Students who are

convicted of plagiarism are eligible to a final warning and may suffer expulsion if convicted.

There have been few arguments about whether plagiarism is intentional or Unintentional. In

some context, plagiarism is considered theft or stealing but not in any current statue that it is a

crime or civil. Therefore we can say that plagiarism has its consequences, advantages and

disadvantages as well. InBaylor, the B Book: handbook for students and parents at Baylor, as

at other academic institution, intentional plagiarism is a honor offense, and teachers turn in to the

Honor Council any student whose work they believe to be dishonest. This proves that

    plagiarism is dishonest and dishonorable.
