Forcenturies,peopleacrosstheworldhaveobservedtherisingandsettingofstarsasindicatorsofseasonalchangeandprosperity.InAotearoaNewZealand,therisingoftheconstellationsMatariki(Pleiades)andTautoru(Orion),andthestarsPuaka(Rigel)andTakurua(Sirius),representsthistransformation.

ThereappearanceofPuakamarksachangeinseasonandtherisingofMatarikisignalsatimeforreflectionandcelebrationofthosewhohavedied.

In2018,Matarikisetson7Juneandriseson6July.Thisyear,wewillholdourfestivalfrom6–22July.

InŌtepotiDunedinwecelebratePuakaMatariki,theMāoriNewYear,throughadiversecitywideprogrammeofcommunityeventsthatcelebratewānaka(learning)andwhanaukataka(community).

YouoryourroopūcanregistertobepartoftheFestival.Youcanalsoapplyforfundingtohelpholdyourevent,gatheringoractivity.Eventsoractivitiesbeingundertakenduringthe6–22Julyperiodwillbegivenpriorityforgrantfunding.Welookforwardtoreceivingyourregistrationorfundingapplication.

ThisguideisforalleventorganiserswhowouldliketobepartofthePuakaMatarikiFestival,whetheryouapplyforfundingsupportornot.ThisyeartheFestivalprogrammewillbeonlineandinprintedform.WewillpromotePuakaMatarikithroughsocialmediaandothernetworksacrossDunedin.Ifweacceptyoureventregistration,wewillworkwithyoutosupportthemarketingofyourevent.Wewillsupplyinformationandresourcestosupportyourmarketingandpromotionplan.WewillalsobebuildingrelationshipswithlocalmediaaroundthewholeFestival,andwillensureyoureventisdiscussedwithmedia.Pleasereadthisguidecarefully.Ifyouwanttoregisteryoureventanddon’tneedfundingfromthePuakaMatarikiGrantFund,pleasecompletethefirstpartoftheform,theEventRegistration.IfyouarealsoapplyingforfundingfromthecontestablePuakaMatarikiGrantFund,pleasecompletethefullEventRegistrationandFundingApplicationform.Eventregistrationsandfundingapplicationscloseat5pm,Friday27April2018.EventorganiserswillbeadvisediftheyhavereceivedfundingbyFriday18May2018.PŪTEAApplicationsforPuakaMatarikicontestablefundingarenowopen.Thisyear$12,500isavailable inthegrantpool. ThisfundingwillbeusedtosupportawiderangeofeventsintheFestivalprogramme.WewillprioritisefundingforeventsthathappenduringtheFestival.Ourgrantfundingis a contribution to any event – it is not intended to be the sole provision. Weencourageeventorganiserstolookfororhaveotherformsoffunding.Individualsandroopūcanapply.Therearethreedifferentfundingareas:Whanaukataka:Relationship,kinship,senseoffamilyconnection-arelationshipthroughsharedexperiencesandworkingtogetherwhichprovidespeoplewithasenseofbelonging

TheWhanaukatakafundingareaisaimedatsmalleventsorgatheringsthatbringwhānauandcommunitiestogether.Youcanapplyforupto$500. Hui:Togather,congregate,assemble,meetTheHuifundingareaisaimedatlargereventsthatmaygooveranumberofdays,oraneventthatisaimedatalargergroupofpeople.Youcanapplyforbetween$500and$2500.Whakanui:Toenlarge,celebrate,honour,exalt,magnifyTheWhakanuifundingareasupportseitheralargeeventorevents.Thereareextrarequirementsforlargeeventsorforroopūaskingfor$2500andover.PleaseseetheRauTautokosectionbelow.RAUTAUTOKOAll applicantsmust complete the funding application form. The applicationmustincludethenameofyourevent,andcontactdetailsforthemainorganiser.Ifyouapplyformorethan$500,youmustsendusafulleventbudget.Ifyouapplyfor$2500ormore,youmustalsosendusquotesforyourcosts.Werequiretwoquotesforanysingleitemof$2000ormore.Beforeyouapplyfor$2500ormore,youmustalsospeakwiththeFestivalCoordinatortodiscussyourevent.Pleasesendusreviewsofpreviouseventsorlettersofsupport.Pleasenote:MembersofthePuakaMatarikiSteeringRoopūcannotofferlettersofsupport.You must send us all your supporting documents together with your fundingapplication.A Puaka Matariki Festival Funding Komiti will assess all applications and allocatefunding.TheFestivalCoordinatordoesnottakepartinthefundingdecisions.TheFundingKomitiwillassessyourapplicationforitscontributiontothekaupapaorvaluesoftheFestival.ThePuakaMatarikiFestivalFundingKomitimakesthefinaldecisiononanygrants.Thereisnoappealprocess.

ThePuakaMatarikiFestivalsupportseventswhichcelebratePuakaMatarikiandareopentothepublic.TheFestivalincludesandsupportsawiderangeofevents.

RegistrationsorfundingapplicationsforeventswhichdonotfittheoverallkaupapaorvaluesofPuakaMatarikiarenoteligibleforfunding,andmaynotbeeligibletobepartoftheFestival.IfyouareunsurewhetherthekaupapaorvaluesofyoureventfitwithPuakaMatariki,pleasecontacttheFestivalCoordinator.TheFestivaldatesare6–22July2018.WewillprioritisefundingforeventsthathappenduringtheFestival.YoureventmusttakeplacewithintheCityofDunedin.PleaserefertothismapoftheDunedincityboundaries,below:

Youshouldhaveotherincomeforyourevent.Weencourageapplicationsfromeventswithsupportfromotherfundingsources,incomefromticketsales,and/orsupportinkind.IfyoualreadyreceiveDCCfunding,youmustspeakwiththeFestivalCoordinatorbeforeyouapply,asyoumaynotbeeligibletoreceiveaPuakaMatarikiFestivalgrant.Largepublic events,organisationsor institutions canapplyonbehalfof their localcommunity.Youneedtoshowevidenceofyourfinancialcontributiontotheproject,andofalonger-termcommitmenttothekaupapaorvaluesofPuakaMatariki.PuakaMatarikifundingcannotbeusedtobuyanyassetssuchasclothing,equipmentoritemsthatbenefitanyonepersonorgroup.PuakaMatarikifundingcannotbeused

tofundongoingcosts.Ifyouareunsurewhetheryourcostsareeligible,pleasespeakwiththeFestivalCoordinatorbeforeyouapply.

TheFestivalFundingPanelmaychoosenottofundyourevent,orgiveyouasmalleramountthanyouappliedfor.Ifthishappens,westillwelcomeyoureventaspartoftheFestival,andwillworkwithyoutosupportthemarketingofyourevent.IfyoureceivePuakaMatarikigrantfunding,youmustputthePuakaMatarikilogoonyourposters,fliersandonlinemarketing.Youmustalsocompletea‘ReportForm’assoon as possible following the completion of the event.
