The LOHAS TSA requires all Waseda students to take a “core” course every term relatedto the general theme of Sustainability. The courses are offered through the UniversityStudies Department and School of Urban & Public Affairs and have regular PSU studentsenrolled in them. For the 2012-2013 academic year, the required core courses are:

Term Course Number Course TitleFall 2012 UNST 224 Environmental SustainabilityWinter 2012 ECON 332

The LOHAS TSA requires all Waseda students to take Academic English. The ESLcurriculum is designed to support the LOHAS coursework and tailored to the specificneeds of the Waseda students.

Waseda students with qualifying TOEFL scores may also take regular PSU electives. These electives can be selected from the list of “Environmental Sustainability” clustercourses at PSU or from any discipline of interest. PSU departments normally haverestrictions (pre-requisites, major, class standing, matriculation) on elective coursesrelated to their major.

Key points about the “Sustainability & the Environment” (or LOHAS) TSAProgram:

All students are required to take our Academic English class. For Winter &Spring terms, students with a >527 TOEFL don’t have to take the 4-creditSupplemental Academic English class. An institutional TOEFL exam is offeredonce per term by PSU.

All students, regardless of their TOEFL score, are required to take a “core” courseevery term related to the general theme of sustainability. This course will haveregular PSU students enrolled in it.

Students may choose their elective classes from “cluster” courses in PSU’snationally recognized sustainability curriculum or from any course offered at PSU(pending usual departmental or university restrictions).

Sustainability Cluster classes:

These classes are related to the “core” courses offered each term. These classes are partof PSU’s nationally acclaimed “Sustainability” curriculum. We encourage TSA studentsto choose at least one of these classes as their PSU Elective during the academic year.

Housing and Meal Plan:

Waseda students have two housing options:

Option #1: Dormitory room (single or double, based on availability) ranging between$1500-$3000 per term. A meal plan is available, but students have kitchens to do theirown cooking or they can eat at local restaurants or on campus. Most furnished rooms oncampus are double-occupancy and students will be paired with a non-Waseda roommate.

Option #2: Homestay costing about $750 per month. Please see www.andeo.org for moreinformation.

It is possible to start in a home stay and then switch to a dormitory room (if available)after one or two terms.

Opportunities for Learning Through Experience:

Portland State University is famous for its "Community Based Learning" courses. Thesecourses are open to TSA students and are an opportunity for them to work on a projectwith Americans that benefits a local community non-profit. The Waseda Oregon Officehelps TNP students find volunteer placements in Portland. TSA students havevolunteered as Japanese language assistants at local schools, helpers at the local animalshelter, and as playgroup leaders for children at the state refugee center.

Portland State has many student organizations/clubs that Waseda students may join(please see http://www.pdx.edu/recreation/rec-clubs andhttp://salpsync.orgsync.com/studentorg for current lists. The Waseda Oregon Office alsoruns a Community of Friends program for students to interact with families in thecommunity. Program field trips are offered each term and have included hiking, rafting, baseball and NBA games, museum trips, and festivals, as well as short-term volunteerexperiences.

Facilitation Plan:

The PSU/Waseda Transnational Programs Office serves TSA students Monday-Friday

from 9am-6pm. Students receive their mail at the office and also use the dedicatedcomputer lab. All staff serve Waseda TSA students in one capacity or another (e.g.advising, assisting with registration, resolving housing problems, etc…). There is also astudent services assistant who helps students with housing and emergency medical issues.Students are given an emergency contact card with the cell telephone numbers of all staff. There is a very high level of academic and personal support to Waseda TSA students.

Credits (24-34 semester credit hours):

Students may earn 24-32 semester credit hours through LOHAS (though the transcriptsare issued in quarter credit hours of 36-48). If a student stays for summer, he/she mayearn an additional 8-10 semester credit hours.

Other Program Fees (minimum estimates)

$656 per term for textbooks

$335 per month for personal expenses$190 per term health center fee (required)

Room & Board Costs (minimum estimates):

A meal plan is available, but students have kitchens to do theirown cooking or they can eat at local restaurants or on campus. Most furnished rooms oncampus are double-occupancy and students will be paired with a non-Waseda roommate.Students are required to sign a 3-term housing contract, so it is not possible to switch to ahomestay mid-year.

Option #2: Homestay costing about $600 per month.

Opportunities for Learning Through Experience:

Portland State University is famous for its "Community Based Learning" courses. These

PSU’s International Students Services has an International Student Lounge, hosts aweekly intercultural coffee hour and has many, many other activities for internationalstudents at PSU. In addition, the program office runs a “friendship family” program, matching Waseda TSA students with local community members.

Facilitation Plan:

The TSA Programs Office serves TSA students Monday-Friday from 8am-5pm. Studentsreceive their mail at the office and also use the dedicated computer lab. All staff serveWaseda students in one capacity or another (e.g. advising, assisting with registration, resolving housing problems, etc…). There is also a student services assistant who helpsstudents with housing and emergency medical issues. Students are given an emergencycontact card with the home telephone numbers of all staff .There is a very high level ofacademic and personal support to TSA students.
