    Improving Value in Healthcare: A Partnership Between an AcademicMedical Center and Primary Care PhysiciansPaul Klotman, MDDr Paul Klotman is president and CEO of Baylor College of Medicine since Sept. 1, 2010. At Baylor, he overseesprivate medical school in the Greater Southwest, ranked among the top 25 medical schools for research byU.S. News & World Report and first among Texas colleges, universities, and medical schools in funding for research and developmen

    Dr Klotman's research has been a blend of both basic and clinical research in molecular virology and AIDpathogenesis. He is the author of more than 200 publications and has been a visiting professor and lecturerinternationally in the field of HIV pathogenesis. He has been listed in both Castle Connolly andNew York Magazine as one of the region's Best Doctors and he currently leads the Association of Professors of Medicefforts in improving the training and mentoring of Physician Scientists.

    The passage of the health care reform bill in 2010 brings millions of Americans who are not currently coveredhealth insurance into an already limited primary care system. Providing care at this capacity will require academhealth centers and community physicians to develop creative approaches in caring for patients that assure a high

    standard of quality. A number of options can be considered, including the expansion of health care teams tofurther incorporate allied health professionals. The relationship that can be established betweencommunity-basedprimary care physicians and academic health centers as one option to improve the value of health care topopulation while implementing health care reform will be the focus of this presentation.

    Medicine as a Currency for Peace: The Passion to Bring Health,Hope, and Healing

    William H. Frist, MD

    Former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist shares his unique experience as a heart transplant surgeon and USsenator inspiring people to make a difference wherever they are by helping others, risking failure, challenginstatus quo, and above all, having a heart to serve. Frist tackles controversial issues to offer feasible solutiosimple philosophy for peace, for example, is service. People dont usually go to war against someone whosave their children, Frist writes. When people see Americas more compassionate, humanitarian side, thebarriers come down, and peace becomes a viable possibility. Frist writes openly about the values and experthat shaped his life, and challenges and inspires everyone to find a place where they, too, can make a diffSenator Bill Frist, MD, served as a senator for 12 years. He has practiced medicine for 20 years and is asurgeon in heart and lung transplantation. Dr Frist now focuses his efforts on relief work around the world

    The 21st century provides a remarkable opportunity for medicine to serve as a currency for peace. Health transcenpolitical and cultural boundaries, and healing can increase cooperation and harmony in a global society.     The Promise of Primary Care John D. Goodson, MD, FACPDr Goodson, Deputy Director of the Harvard Medical School Course Development Committee, has been a primary

    care practitioner for 35 years in the Internal Medicine Associates, a primary care internal medicine practice basethe Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). In his early career as a medical educator, Dr Goodson expandedprimary care training program at the MGH. He continues to teach in his practice and on the ward in patient seHe has organized and taught primary care continuing education for 30 years. Nationally, he has been involved in hecare advocacy for the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) and the American College of Physicians (AHe maintains his own private practice, seeing 60-70 patients per week, and admits and rounds on his own inpatients.

    Dr Goodson will briefly summarize the current challenges facing primary care practice and then discuss themany current opportunities to rebuild the primary care workforce. There are aspects of the 2010 health carelegislation that are quite favorable and there is a growing public support for our work but improvement isno means assured. Dr Goodson will present examples of how primary care has been maintained and restoredand will go on to assert that in the end, we need to marshal the support of every primary care providerengage in a national effort to expand primary care.
