•  ·∙  The  Photographers’  Gallery  is  the  prime  gallery  for  contemporary  photography  in  London.  Having  closed  for  refurbishment  it  is  planning  a  launch  exhibiBon  for  the  re-‐opening  in  January  2012.  The  theme  of  the  exhibiBon  is  ‘Street  Fashion  in  Britain’.  You  have  been  invited  to  submit  3  fashion  portraits  of  real  people  photographed  in  urban  locaBons.  The  gallery  are  looking  for  photographs  that  represent  the  original  and  invenBve  approach  of  the  BriBsh  public  to  fashion.  You  can  either  search  the  streets  for  models  or  take  your  own  models  to  appropriate  locaBons.

•  ‘Un8tled  Photograph’  •  The  date  this  photograph  was  taken  is  15th  April  2010.  •  The  name  of  the  photographer  is  Akif  Hakan  Celebi.    •  The  genre  of  this  photograph  is  fashion.    •  -‐I  think  because  Akif  Hakan  Celebi  is  a  fashion  photographer  she

would  think  about  all  the  different  fashion  in  the  world  and  how  culture  could  be  a  big  impact  of  fashion.  I  think  she  was  influenced  to  take  this  photograph  on  the  streets  because  of  the  background  of  this  photograph.  I  think  the  background  is  quite  important  because  of  the  colours  and  also  at  the  fact  its  a  wall.  Backgrounds  always  stand  out  in  photographs  and  I  think  the  arBst  gave  thought  to  the  locaBon  before  taking  the  photograph.  Also  the  wall  has  graffiB  which  explains  some  streets  well.  The  lighBng  in  this  photograph  goes  from  being  dark  on  the  leY  hand  side  to  going  to  brighter  colours  on  the  right.  I  think  the  arBst  was  influenced  to  have  this  woman  as  the  model  and  what  she  wears  because  it  puts  some  colour  into  the  way  the  street  is  dark  and  gloom.

1st  wriQen  analysis  cont..  -‐I  think  the  imagery  in  this  photograph  could  be  symbolic  of  the  photographers  emoBons  because  it  could  show  what  the  photographer  feels  about  street  fashion.  I  think  the  model  in  this  photograph  wouldn’t  normally  match  the  locaBon  but  i  think  this  photograph  works  well  together.  The  photographers  emoBons  could  also  match  into  how  the  photographer  feels  about  a  parBcular  issue.  The  imagery  in  this  photograph,  being  the  wall,  could  be  symbolic  to  how  the  photograph  feels  about  the  streets  and  graffiB.  It  could  be  that  she  thinks  its  a  good  thing  and  that  graffiB  is  good  art  (which  links  with  fashion  photography)  which  could  be  the  reason  for  the  locaBon  of  this  photograph.  Or  on  the  other  hand  it  could  be  that  she  finds  this  an  issue  and  doesn’t  agree  with  ‘street’  being  a  fashion,  this  could  be  why  she  chose  to  have  this  model  at  this  locaBon  to  show  it  is  unique  and  different  and  you  wouldn’t  normally  see  this  presentaBon  of  the  woman  on  streets  like  the  locaBon.

EvaluaBon  of  iniBal  set  of  photographs;

•  These  are  my  edited  photographs  from  my  iniBal  set  of  photographs.  I  chose  these  photographs  to  edit  because  i  thought  that  these  photographs  had  the  strongest  backgrounds  and  my  brief  was  street  fashion  in  Britain.  I  straight  away  thought  of  a  locaBon  that  would  fit  this  brief  well.  My  models  against  the  arBsBc/graffiB  walls  was  also  linked  to  my  arBst  number  1.  I  also  liked  what  my  models  were  wearing  in  these  shots  as  they  weren’t  boring  and  stood  out  against  the  backgrounds.  I  thought  alot  about  colours  and  things  that  are  bold  and  would  stand  out  such  as  the  models  lipsBck  and  shoes  (doc  marBns).  I  also  made  sure  that  the  models  didnt  have  the  same  appearance  at  every  locaBon  as  this  would  be  very  boring.  I  also  edited  some  of  these  photographs  into  black  and  white  as  i  thought  it  suited  some  of  the  locaBon/backgrounds.  The  other  edits  i  made  bold  and  colourful  to  make  the  edits  different  and  to  also  see  the  art  well  in  the  backgrounds.

‘Triptychs  of  Strangers’  #5  The  way  to  be  honest  Parisian,  Montmartre.’  The  date  this  photograph  was  taken  is  February  19,2011.  The  name  of  the  photographer  is  Adde  Adesokan.  The  genre  of  this  photograph  is  Street  Fashion.

2nd  wriQen  arBst  analysis  cont..  -‐I  think  that  Adde  Adesokan  was  influenced  to  take  this  photograph  because  it  shows  peoples  different  personalitys.  This  one  photograph  is  actually  three  different  shots  put  into  one  photograph.  I  think  the  main  different  body  parts  of  a  person  influenced  the  photographer  to  make  up  these  series  of  photographs  which  he  called  ‘Triptychs  of  Strangers’.  I  also  think  the  photographer  was  influenced  to  take  this  photograph  because  its  unique,  not  many  street  fashion  photographs  would  take  a  variety  of  different  shots  to  put  them  onto  one  main  photograph.  I  think  somebodys  image,  dress  sense  and  the  items  they  have,  make  these  photographs  different.  Many  of  the  photographers  other  photographs  are  black  and  white  so  i  think  he  was  then  influenced  to  make  his  next  one  colour.  This  makes  this  photograph  stand  out.

Page 12: Project 1-Photography

2nd  wriQen  arBst  analysis  cont..  I  think  the  photographer  really  thought  about  the  importance  of  peoples  beliefs,norms  and  values,  the  different  types  of  personaliBes,  skin  colour  and  dress  sense  some  people  have.  I  think  this  is  why  the  photographer  photographed  many  different  people  who  dont  look  the  same.  I  also  think  that  Adde  Adesokan  is  giving  a  message  to  the  audience  about  how  you  can  shoot  different  parts  of  peoples  bodies  and  can  put  them  together  to  make  a  whole  picture  which  is  quite  interesBng  because  its  this  idea  of  gecng  mini  pictures  and  pucng  them  together  as  one.  I  think  the  photographer  was  interested  in  all  the  different  personaliBes  of  someone  and  that  is  why  he  photographed  random  people  that  he  only  just  met.

EvaluaBon  of  developmental  set  of  photographs;  These  are  my  edited,developmental  set  of  photographs.  These  photographs  are  linked  to  my  arBst  number  2,  as  he  took  photographs  of  peoples  bodys  and  made  them  into  one  whole  photograph  so  this  is  what  I  did  with  mine.  I  liked  the  idea  of  this  as  its  different  then  any  other  ordinary  shots  and  i  also  liked  my  arBsts  theory  on  this.  He  wouldnt  know  the  people  who  he  has  shot  he  would  just  like  what  they  would  be  wearing  or  what  their  personality  is  like.  These  set  of  photographs  are  developed  because  I  used  different  peoples  clothing  and  mixed  them  up  into  one.  They  are  also  developed  because  in  my  first  set  of  iniBal  photographs  I  knew  my  models.  In  these  developmental  set  i  didnt  know  some  of  the  people.  I  would  just  use  them  for  my  shots  by  what  their  personal  image  is  like  or  what  their  clothing  is  like.

EvaluaBon  of  developmental  photographs  cont..

•  I  also  wanted  to  make  it  abit  different  from  what  the  arBst  would  do.  He  would  do  it  verBcally,  so  this  then  gave  me  an  idea  to  when  coming  to  do  mine  i  should  do  it  diagonally  or  even  make  it  look  like  the  body  parts  are  from  the  same  person  by  matching  up  the  neck  line  etc  (even  though  none  of  these  photographs  are  from  the  same  person).  I  also  edited  them  depending  on  what  the  person  in  the  shot  looked  like.  For  example  the  photograph  number  1,  the  person  who’s  head  is  in  this  photograph  had  long  dark  hair  and  bright  purple  lipsBck  so  i  thought  it  would  be  good  to  keep  this  photo  quite  natural,  but  having  a  darkish  background  but  with  some  paleness  to  the  face.  This  is  why  on  the  middle  part  of  somebodys  body  on  the  same  shot  (number  1)  i  edited  this  to  be  quite  exposed  as  it  would  make  the  body  colours  of  both  these  people  different.

Final  outcomes  evaluaBon

I  chose  these  for  my  final  outcome  because  I  really  enjoyed  working  with  these  models  and  the  locaBon  that  I  did.  We  all  worked  really  well  together  and  I  think  it  was  a  success,  I  got  most  of  the  shots  I  was  looking  for.  I  really  liked  the  models  image  on  the  day  and  these  3  were  my  favourite  photographs  out  of  the  whole  project.
