2. Introduction of the project:

2.1. Identification of Project and Project proponent:

The Chitradurga schist belt in Chitradurga district hosts economic deposits like Iron,

Manganese, Limestone & Dolomite deposits and mining activities are being carried out since

decades in this region. There are a number of mining leases operating in this region producing

about 3-5 million TPA of ore deposits for internal consumption and exports. In the years to

come, the demand for the deposits produced will be on the rise both from domestic and export

fronts. In order to meet the growing demand it is inevitable to open up hitherto

unexplored/unused-mineralized zones for systematic development and ore production.

A study conducted in this mining region to integrate environmental concerns with the mining

and related activities sponsored by the Govt. of Karnataka has come up with findings and

suggestions for systematic and scientific mining. It is learnt that this study has voiced the

opinion that with appropriate environmental protection measures this region and stated that

this region can produce 10 to 15 times more than the present level of output.

Sri. T.K.Chandrappa, Mining Engineer, who has vast experience about 42 years in mining has

obtained prospecting license (P.L.No.-3366) for Limestone & Dolomite in Sy. No. 37 & 43 of

Kanubenahalli Village, Hosadurga Taluk, Chitradurga district, Karnataka for a period of 2 years

w.e.f Dated: 13-12-2006. Lease has been renewed for the period of 20 yrs Approval of mine

lease area is attached as Annexure 1.

2.2. Breif Description of nature of the project:

The proposed project involves the mining of limestone and dolomite in an extent of 430 Acers

(174.02 Ha) and it falls in schedule 1(a) (i) Mining of Minerals of Category ‘A’. Approval of

mine lease area is attached as Annexure 1.

2.2.1. Limestone

Based on field observation, Area comprised within the zone of limestone mineralization.

Out crops of Limestone are well exposed all along strike both length & width wise

intermittently with about 0.0 to 0.5m thick soil cover is observed. Apart of these, an old

working, Bore holes, trenches and trail pits justifies depth continuity. Generally, this

Limestone is of sedimentary formation running all along the strike N190 W/ S190 E dip

varies between 200 to 400 East. Limestone found to be compact, hard, homogeneous, fine

grained & concretionary rocks.

2.2.2. Dolomite

Dolomite is a sedimentary rock of carbonate composition and is made up chiefly of a

mineral Dolomite which is CaMg (CO3)2. Applied area comprised of Manganiferrous

quartzite all along ridge surrounded by the Dolomite in the zone of Limestone

mineralization zone. The origin of dolomite has been an incompletely solved problem. It

is believed that deposit might have formed by the replacement of limestone by magnesium-

rich solutions during the intrusion of Manganiferrous quartzite.

2.2.3. Dolomitic Limestone

This is the Mg rich limestone which is the resultant of limestone replaced by magnesium -

rich solutions. At this area, Dolomitic Limestone bifurcates the Limestone and Dolomite.

2.3. Need for the project and its importance to the Country and or Region:

It has recommended opening up new areas in order to reduce the stress/impact on existing

mining leases and this will also lead to exploring the mineral bodies using drilling etc. Proper

exploration of mineral resources will delineate the quality/quantity and help to wrap up at the

most suitable exploitation strategy with an eye on conserving the mineral and reducing waste

handling.

Limestone and Dolomite will be supplied to the steel plant and cement industries located in

Karnataka. Cement grade limestone will be supplied to cement plant after crushing. Material

of -40+10 mm will be sent to steel and cement plant. Fines (-10 mm) will be stacked separately.

This will be sold to fertilizer and other industries as and when required.

2.4. Demand – Supply Gap:

Dolomite is consumed by iron & steel, Ferro-alloys, fertilizer, glass, alloy steel and other

industries. The total consumption of dolomite in 2011-12 was 6.33 million tonnes. It increased

by 1% from that in the year 2010-11, mainly in sponge iron industry. Iron & steel industry was

the major consumer of dolomite in 2011-12 accounting 72%, followed by sponge iron (17%)

and cement & Ferro-alloys (2% each). The remaining quantity was utilised by other industries,

such as alloy steel, glass, fertilizer, paint, refractory, etc.

The limestone resources are classified as per United Nations Framework Classification

(UNFC) system. As per IBM the total cement grade limestone resources is 124,539.551 million

tonnes, out of which the total cement grade limestone reserves is 8948.926 million tonnes

UNFC code (111), (121) and (122), and the total remaining resources is 115,590.625 million

tonnes. The production of the cement by India in the year 2011-12 is 246 million tones falling

short by 22 million tones than the proposed target.

2.5. Domestic and Export Market:

Limestone & Dolomite will be supplied to the Steel plant and Cement industries located in

Karnataka. Cement grade Limestone will be supplied Cement plant after crushing. Material of

-40+10 mm will be sent to Steel & Cement plant. Fines (-10mm) will be stacked separately.
