Born in Torun, Poland on the 19th February 1473

Died in 24th May 1543

He studied Astronomy and Astrology at the Universityof Cracow

From 1501 – 1503 he studied medicine in Padua

He is often recognised as the first person whobelieved that the sun was at the centre of theUniverse

Copernicus thought that the Sun was at the centre of

the universe and that the Earth and all the other

planets orbited around it.Ptolemy thought that the Earth was at the centre of

the universe and that the Sun and the other planetswent around the Earth.

Ptolemaic‟s Universe-The main observations that were

used to support the theory that this Universe is a

Geocentric one, were: The stars and moon appear torevolve around the Earth each day. The other

observation was that the Earth didn‟t seem to move, in

the point of view of a person living on Earth, so they

believed that the Earth stayed still and was at the centre

of the Universe, another observation was that in theBible it said: “The world shall also be stable, that it not

be moved.” (Chronicles 16:30 KJV)

The Church accepted Ptolemy‟s theory because they

believed that God had put the Earth at the centre of

the UniverseThey also believed that it said in the Bible that the

Earth was at the centre of the universe

The Influence of Copernicus‟ Theory 

The main influence that Copernicus‟ theory created,

was that God couldn‟t be in the sky 

We think that they still thought that God „lives‟ inheaven but that they didn‟t know where this „heaven‟

was
