Nueva dirección del ClubDesde hace unos meses José Luis Gómez Sánchez ha tomado las riendas del club como nuevo Director General de La Quinta Golf & Country Club. Llega a este puesto después de desempeñar importantes funciones dentro de la empresa en los últimos años y con más de 10 años de experiencia en el sector.

José Luis has been an integral part of the La Quinta management team for many years and has more than 10 years experience in the sector.

Bienvenidos a esta nueva edición de verano de Q News, nuestra revista donde le informaremos de los eventos que se han producido en los últimos meses y los que están por venir, así como información sobre nuestra vida social y la completa oferta de servicios que le ofrecemos en La Quinta Golf & Country Club.Corren nuevos tiempos en nuestro club y queremos hacerle participe de esta nueva etapa donde nuestro personal afronta nuevos retos como es la celebración por primera vez en La Quinta del Open de España femenino así como la tercera edición del Benahavis Senior Master, ambas, pruebas del circuito europeo.Espero que disfruten con esta edición y se animen a conocer La Quinta si aun no lo han hecho.

Welcome to this latest edition of Q News where we will inform you of the events of the recent months, future events, as well as information on our social life and the services that we offer here at La Quinta Golf & Country Club. Times are changing within our club and we wish to invite you to participate in this new phase where we are experiencing new challenges such as hosting the Ladies European Tour for the first time as well as celebrating the Benahavis Senior Masters for the third consecutive year, both, tests on the European circuit. La Quinta ha sido elegidacomo sede de dosTour Europeos en 2011!!!El equipo de Greenkeeper de La Quinta sigue trabajando y aplicando nuevas técnicas para garantizar las excelentes condiciones del campo durante todo el año.  Si a esto le añadimos las instalaciones de primera calidad del Club ya tenemos los puntos clave para haber sido elegido este año sede de dos Pruebas del Circuito Europeo. El Benahavís Senior Masters tendrá lugar por tercer año consecutivo del 10 al 16 de Octubre de 2011. En los años anteriores, el torneo atrajo grandes jugadores de la Ryder Cup como Sam Torrance, Constantivo Rocca y Manuel Piñero.Por primera vez, La Quinta Golf & Country Club, ha sido designado sede del Open de España Femenino 2011 que tendrá lugar del 15 al 18 de Septiembre.Ciento veinte jugadoras profesionales, entre las que se encontrarán las más destacadas del Viejo Continente, españolas incluidas, así como seis amateurs, lucharán por el título del Open de España Femenino 2011 a lo largo de cuatro jornadas.Con la confirmación del Benahavís Senior Masters y el Ladies Open el Club de Golf La Quinta Golf se posiciona  a la cabeza de los campos de golf en España.

La Quinta has been designated for two European Tour eventsin 2011!!!The team of greenkeepers at La Quinta are consistently working and applying new techniques to ensure that the course is in excellent conditions year round.  It is thanks to the magnificent course conditions as well as the first class facilities of the Club that it has received the distinguished accolade of being chosen to host two European Tour events this year.The Benahavís Senior Masters will be held for the third consecutive year from the 10th-16th October 2011.  During previous years the tournament attracted past champions and Ryder cup greats such as Sam Torrance, Constantino Rocca and Manuel Piñero.La Quinta Golf & Country Club has been designated for the first time, as the venue for the Spanish Ladies Open 2011 from the 15th until the 18th of September.  One hundred and twenty professionals, amongst them the most outstanding players worldwide as well six amateurs, will battle over four days for the the esteemed Spanish Ladies Open 2011 title.By confirming the 2011 Benahavís Senior Masters and the Ladies European Tour the La Quinta Golf & Country Club continues to position itself at the forefront of Spanish golf courses.

Reflexiones con... Manuel PiñeroLa lista de logros de ‘Manolo’ es una de las más completas de los jugadores Europeos, con un total de 21 victorias, nacionales e internacionales. Tres veces campeón del Mundo y dos veces ganador de la Ryder Cup y por supuesto, diseñador del campo de La Quinta Golf. Q News tomó ventaja y le robó algunos minutos a este increíble jugador para pasarlos con nosotros…

¿Cuál es tu mejor recuerdo de Golf hasta la fecha?Tendría que ser el primer Torneo Profesional que yo gané cuando empecé mi carrera, el Madrid Open, sin embargo ganando el British PGA en Sandwich en Gran Bretaña es uno de los momentos más orgullosos y por supuesto, ganando el World Cup en 1976 con Seve Ballesteros.¿Cómo empezó con La Quinta?A través de un buen amigo mio, Javier Quiles, (Director General de Inmobiliaria Bilbao). Yo vivía en Madrid, él habló conmigo, estaba compitiendo todavía, y el quería que fuese en el tema de golf la persona para el nuevo proyecto que iniciaba. En principio el compromiso era simplemente de imagen y asesoramiento, y lo asesoré, y luego me dijeron que si yo podría, junto con Antonio García Garrido, hacer el campo de golf. Fue un reto porque la finca era muy complicada pero como en cualquier diseño del campo lo más importante era encontrar el equilibrio del recorrido. El recién renovado campo C tiene un nuevo par 3 en el 2º Hoyo encima del agua hacia un green bien resguardado – ¿algún consejo para jugarlo?Se que es difícil, de hecho, por eso lo hice. He intentado que sea el hoyo de referencia en estos 9 hoyos – El consejo quizás sería que no mire nunca a la bandera, que apunte al centro del green, y que intente pegarle bien.

Si pudiera dar un consejo a los golfistas para mejorar su juego, ¿cuál sería?Es tremendamente complicado para un solo consejo, si el jugador intenta practicar manteniendo su equilibrio, puede mejorar otros aspectos de su swing y para jugar La Quinta, no debería atacarlo, ni ser agresivo, mantener la bola en juego y tener paciencia.

El nuevo par 3 del Hoyo 6 es muy ajustado sin ayuda en ninguno de los lados, ¿cuál es la mejor manera de afrontar este Hoyo?Es un hoyo más corto pero no demasiado difícil, tiene un green muy complicado, si no la dejas relativamente cerca del hoyo, tiene difícil el putt.Para permitir tener tanto éxito en golf, en la vida y en los negocios, ¿Cuál diría usted que es la base del éxito?Mucha disciplina y creer en lo que estás haciendo.

Manuel PiñeroThe list of achievements of “Manolo” is one of the most complete amongst European players, with a total of 21 national and international victories: Three times world champion, twice Ryder Cup winner and our very own La Quinta Golf course designer. Q News took advantage of stealing a few minutes of this veritable unsung hero within our midst…

What is your greatest golfing achievement to date?It would have to be the first professional tournament that I won when I started my career, The Madrid Open; however winning the British PGA in Sandwich in the UK was one of my proudest moments and of course winning the World Cup in 1976 with Seve Ballesteros.

How did your relationship with La Quinta Golf & Country Club begin?Actually thanks to a very good friend of mine, Javier Quiles, (General Manager of a real estate company from Bilbao). I was living in Madrid and still competing and he wanted me to be at the forefront of a new golf project that he was developing. At first, the agreement was simply to advise and to lend my image to the project, however later they asked me if I would consider designing the course together with Antonio Garcia Garrido (Architect who designed the Club). In the end it was a great challenge especially as the Finca is a very complicated one from the point of course design and as in any course design it is vital to get the trajectory right.

The recently renovated C Course has a daunting new par 3 on the 2nd hole over water to a well guarded green – any tips on how to play it?I appreciate that it is a difficult hole, I designed it this way. My intention was that this would be a reference hole for this course. To play it well, perhaps it is best to aim for the centre of the green and attempt to hit it well and not to focus on the flag,

If you could give an average golfer one tip to improve their game, what would it be?The most important thing, and it is incredibly difficult just to give just one tip, would be for the player to practice maintaining his balance in order to improve other aspects of his swing and for playing La Quinta, the best advice would be not to attack the course or to be aggressive, but moreover to maintain the ball in play and to have patience.

The new par 3 6th hole is very tight with no relief on either side – what is the best way to tackle this hole?This is a short hole but it is not a very complex one although the green is very complicated, if you do not get the ball relatively near to the hole then it is difficult to putt.

To enable you to have so much success in golf, life and business what would you list as your top principals?A lot of discipline and above all to believe in what you are doing.

Finalmente se impuso el equipo de La Quinta y nuestros jugadores se alzarón con la victoria tras siete años de derrota.En el 2010, en la Liga Senior Costa del Sol, La Quinta Golf quedó segunda de trece equipos, lo que nos convierte en uno de los mejores de la Costa.

La Quinta ended up taking home the victory for the first time in seven years.In 2010, at the Costa del Sol Senior League, La Quinta Golf was the second of thirteen teams, making it one of the best in the Costa del Sol.

A word from the Greenkeeper.Finally summer has arrived. This time of year, along with the spring months, is the most intense in terms of course maintenance. The main tasks that are already being carried out, or those which will commence shortly are:• More frequent cutting of the grass. • Verticuts and re-seeding. • Elimination of the Rye-grass on the tees and aprons in order to maintain a healthy Bermuda grass going into the summer-autumn months. • Frequent and light green fertilizing (Spoon-feeding) • Reviews of the irrigation systems, with are currently used almost daily. • Re-seeding, spiking and fertilizing of tees, fairways, rough and aprons. • Pruning of plants that are in season in order to optimize growth.
