IDRISI Selva Installation Read Me

January 2013

Installation

This CD or download file can be used for installing both stand-alone and multi-seat products. The IDRISI Selva installation requires every copy to be activated and licensed to a particular computer within 30 days of installation. Until activated, IDRISI Selva will run in trial mode, allowing full access to the program during this trial period.

For multi-seat licenses, IDRISI Selva must first be installed and activated on the server. During the installation, you have the option of installing the full set of core files or only the license manager files on the server. If you choose the latter, deselect the first three options and select to install only the license manager files on the server. This option installs only those files needed to manage client machines from a server. The full core files must be installed on all the clients.

Once installed, locate the IDRISI Selva program group, accessed from the Windows Start menu, and select IDRISI Selva to launch the program. In trial mode, you will be asked to open the IDRISI License Manager or to open IDRISI Selva. Click No to continue into the program if you are not ready to activate your license. If you are ready to activate your license, select to open the IDRISI License Manager. Note that you must have your license ID and password to activate.

License Manager and License Activation

The IDRISI License Manager is used to manage your IDRISI Selva stand alone or multi-seat license. Licenses can be activated online or offline. Online activation (the default method) assumes internet connectivity to connect to the IDRISI License Server.

If the License Manager cannot connect to the internet, the IDRISI License Manager will default to offline activation. If you are using a proxy server, select the Switch to Online Activation link to set your proxy server IP or server name. You also may choose to activate offline, even when connected to the internet, by selecting the Switch to Offline Activation link from within the IDRISI License Manager.Note: Multi-seat expiring licenses cannot be activated offline.

To activate a copy of IDRISI Selva, you must have your License ID and Password ready. These are supplied to you by Clark Labs, usually via email, after Clark Labs has processed your order.

To activate, locate the IDRISI Selva program group, accessed from the Windows Start menu, and select the IDRISI License Manager. Then follow the instructions in the activation dialog.

Multi-Seat Activation

Activating the Server Machine:

IDRISI Selva must first be installed and activated on the server before activating any networked clients. Activating online requires active internet access. Please follow the instructions below to activate the server machine:

Open the IDRISI License Manager.

Select the Server (Network) option.

Enter your License ID and Password into the respective boxes (Please note: Password is case sensitive.)

Enter the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path in the box below the password box. The UNC path is the full path and filename of the license file on the server machine. This will be the network path that the client machines will use to navigate to the license file that is located on the sever machine across your network. The UNC path should look similar to this:

\\ \IDRISI Selva\License\Selva

The \\ can be either the name of the server machine or its IP address. For networks where clients are located across different domains or subnets from the server it is suggested to use the IP address of the server.

The \IDRISI Selva\License is the name of the shared folder on your network that holds the license file. This folder can be found in the default installation directory: C:\Program Files\IDRISI Selva\License.

Selva is the name of the license file (this file has no extension). The license file should NOT be modified, or renamed.

The shared folder that holds the license file should be configured at this step. All appropriate Users and Groups must be given at least modify permissions to both the License folder and the Selva file (e.g., Program Files > IDRISI Selva > License). To set the NTFS permissions on this folder and its contents, see below:

Right-click on the License folder and select Properties.

In the Sharing tab, make sure all users have Full Control of the folder.

In the Security tab, make sure all users have at least Modify permissions.

Next, open the License folder and locate the Selva file. Right-click and select Properties.

Make sure all users have at least Modify permissions in the Security tab and Full Control under the Sharing tab.

When all required information is entered in the License Manager and when the shared folder has been set up click Activate Online.

Activating the Client Machines:

Client machines can be activated in one of two ways:

Using the License Manager:

Log on to the client machine as an administrator.

On the client machine, open up the License Manager.

Select the Client (Network) option.

Enter the SAME UNC path you specified on the server machine. It is important that the UNC paths on the server and client machines are identical.

The UNC path should look similar to this: \\ \IDRISI Selva\License\Selva

Click Activate Online.

If you have Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008: When running the program for the first time, please be sure to right-click on the IDRISI Selva icon and select Run as administrator.

On clients that are not using Vista or Windows 7 or not enabling UAC, non-admin logins to client machines must have Modify rights to the following locations where IDRISI Selva is installed: idrusers.ini, idrisi32.ini, and the Projects folder under the IDRISI Selva folder. The location of the Projects folder can be redirected to a common area using IDRISI Explorer. Once in IDRISI Selva, open IDRISI Explorer and go to the Projects Tab. Right-click on the default Projects folder location and select New Projects folder.

Using the floatpath:

After activation on the server machine, a file called floatpath (this file has no extension) is written to the IDRISI Selva\License folder. This file contains the UNC path that was specified during the server activation.

On the server machine, go to the IDRISI Selva\License folder. Copy the file called floatpath (this file has no extension). Copy this file to the same directory on all the client machines: Program Files > IDRISI Selva > License folder.

The client will automatically be activated. The floatpath file holds the UNC path from the server machine.

Special Client Activation Method for Administrators:

Other than the first client, if you are an administrator activating a number of clients, a simple registry entry can be pushed to the clients, thus avoiding the use of the IDRISI License Manager: HKLM\Software\Classes\Idrisi32.IdrisiAPIServer\FloatPath\FloatPath with the value named FloatPath. You will need to create a Windows Administration script file (.ADM) that specifies the registry key used by the IDRISI Selva license, FloatPath, and then import this into System Policy Editor as an Administrative Template. Then define a Group Policy Object to perform setting or unsetting this registry key on whatever group(s) of machines you wish to connect to or disconnect from a network license. You can find more information on writing custom .ADM files at: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/225087.

License DeactivationFor stand alone and multi-seat licenses, once your license is activated, you must deactivate the license if you wish to transfer the license to another machine, install a new operating system on the same machine, or redirect the UNC or mapped drive for network licensing. 1. To deactivate a license, launch the IDRISI Selva License Manager.2. Select Deactivate License and reenter your License ID and Password. 3. Click Deactivation to deactivate the license. You may now install IDRISI on a new machine or operating system, using the same License ID and password from your former machine.

Time Tampering RecoveryIf you lose your license due to time tampering (e.g., setting the clock back and then forward again), your license can be recovered by setting it to the correct local time. However, if you set the system clock forward and then back again, the license file must be reset. If you are online, open the IDRISI License Manager and select the Time Tampering Recovery link. Select the AutoFix option and click the Get Time button to sync your system clock with a universal clock via the web. Then click Fix Clock to recover your license. If you are offline, time tampering can only be resolved through the use of key codes. Select the Offline Time Fixing option to generate two User codes. Email or fax these codes to Clark Labs ([email protected]), along with your full contact information and Customer ID. Clark Labs will return to you two key codes. Enter these key codes and click Fix Clock to recover your license.

Special Note to Windows 7/8 and Server

The IDRISI Selva installation takes advantage of Windows User Account Control (UAC). It is very important that administrators run IDRISI License Manager with elevated privileges by using the Run as Administrator command when launching the License Manager on Windows 7/8 and Server platforms.
