It’sbeentwomonthssinceIarrivedinItalyandalreadyIfeelasthoughI’ve

learntandgrownsomuch.InschoolIstillfinditincrediblyhardtounderstand

thelessons(especiallybecauseI’mterribleatMaths,GeometryandPhilosophy

inEnglish,soyoucanimaginewhatitwouldbelikeformeinItalian)buteach

dayIlearnsomethingnewandeachdayfeelsasthoughit’sgettingeasierand

easier.However,ILOVEmyfashionclasses.Mystyleoffiguresanddesignas

evolvedtoheightsIdidn’tknowI’deverreachandI’msoincrediblyinspiredby

everythinginItalysomydesignshavechangedsignificantly.Butforthebetter,I

lovegoingtoschool.

Sincemylastreport,theweatherherehasdramaticallychanged.Forthoseof

youthatarereadingthisreportanddidn’treadmyfirstone–gobackandread

myfirstone–forthoseofyouthatHAVEreadmyfirstreport,youwillknow

aboutTrieste’swind.Aka,TheBora.ThisyearhasapparentlybeenTrieste’s

coldestwintersince2003,andforthefirsttimeinyearstherewassnowinthe

city.Theschool’swereclosedbecauseitwassocoldandthecity’spierwas

frozenover(whichwasabsolutelyamazingforthepeopleofTriestebecauseitneverhappens.Belowisaphotooftheendofthepier,wherethesnowwasshin

deepandinthemostamazingform,duetothestrongBora:





ThisisalsoanexampleoftheresultsofTrieste’sBora:

Inmycity,thereareasmany(orpossiblymore)scootersandmotorbikesthan

cars,andonextremelywindydays,allthroughoutthecityprettymuchevery

scooteristippedoverbecausethewindissostronghere.It’shilarious,it’slikea

giantversionofdominos!

AttheendofFebruarywasthefamousCarnivale!Acelebrationthatgoesfora

fullweek,whereeverybodydressesincrazy,ridiculouscostumes!Carnivale

startsonaWednesdayandfinishesthefollowingTuesday(MardiGras),andme

andmyfriendswenttoaplacecalledMuggiaontheSaturdaynightinbetween.

Muggia,asmalltownjustoutsideofTrieste–andwhenIsaysmallIliterally

meanthesizeofabouttwofootballfields–iswheretheteenagersofTriestego

topartyitupCarnivalestyle!ThepartyinMuggiagoesforthewholesevendays

(Ifeelsosorryforalltheoldpeopleintheirhousesthathavetowithtandthis

noisyweekeveryyear)however,formeabout1hourwasenoughinMuggia.It’s

sosmallthatafteranhourIhadseeneverythingtherewastosee,dancedinall





theplacesthereweretodanceandfeltallthecoldnesstherewastofeel.

ThisisaphotoofthemainPiazzaofMuggia,whereeveryonedancesandgets

coveredwithconfettiandbubbles!

Thenextday,Sunday,myRotaryDistrict(thesame6peopleIwenttoRome

with)andIwenttoVenicetoexperiencetheREALCarnivale!Moretraditional,

morebeautifulandbyfarmoreclassythanMuggia.Thisexperienceformewasthemostamazingthingintheworld.TheCarnivaleVenetianmasksarethemost

incrediblethingsI’veeverseen.Theytookmybreathaway!Ihonestlywantedto

buyeverysingleone!Andbecauseit’smydreamtobeafashiondesignerIfeltas

thoughIwasobligedtobuyeverysingleone!…toobadsomeofthemwere230

euros…BUT!IdidbuyacoupleofcheaponesandIfoundoneontheground,soI

haveaminicollectionofVenetianmasksthatIcanhanginmyhouseandbrag

aboutwhenIgethome.Eventhoughtheskythatdaywasgrey,Venicestill

seemedlikethemostbeautifulplaceonearth.Thethousandsofmasks

everywhere,peopleinstrangebutbeautifulcostumes,thecanals,thegondolas,

EVERYTHING!AndbecauseitwasCarnivale,Idecidedtojoininthecraziness

andgetmyface painted…

AttheveryendofFebruarymyhostmumtookmetoTrieste’slighthouse,and

lordknowsIlostatleastaFEWcaloriesclimbingallthosestairs.Butitwasall

worthit,fromthetopIwasabletoseethehugeGulfthatTriesteissituatedin,

andwhereCroatia’scoastlinestarts.Aswell,IwasabletoseeanamaaaazingviewofTriesteitself:

Afterwards,wewenttoanOsmiza,whichisliterallywhereafamilysellstheirhomemadewines,meats,breadsandcheesesandprovidesadorablelittletables





intheiryardsforpeopletoeatat.Sobasicallyahomemadelittlerestaurantfor

thepublic,however,theyonlyrunforacoupleofdaysoftheyear.ButOH.MY.

GOD!ITWASAMAZING!Meandmyhostmumsatthereinthesun,drinkingwine

andeatingproscuttoonhomemadebread,itwasdelicciiiouuuussss!

AndwhatIloveaboutOsmizaisthatit’sonlyinandaroundTrieste,where

familiesdothiskindofthing…soit’soneofakind!Butthenagain..whenIgo

backtoAustraliaI’llneverfindanythinglikeit…whichsucks…

Finally,anotherhighlightforthismonthwasmyfirstcookinglessonoftheyear!

Butironically,itwasanAmericanrecipe–notItalian.Maren,anAmerican

RotarystudenttaughtmehowtomakeStrawberryShortcake!

Ittastedasdeliciousasitlooks!ButfromnowonI’mpromisingmyselfthat

everycookinglessonIhavewillbeanItalianrecipe…





Intermsoflanguage,myItalianhascertainlyimproved!I’matthestagewhereI

canunderstandmostofwhatpeoplesaytome,andwhenpeopletalkwithme

veryslowlyIcanhaveafullconversationinItalian.Istillmakeplennnntyof

mistakeswhenIspeak,butpeopleunderstandwhatI’mtryingtosayandhelp

me!EverydayIreadHarryPotter,andI’mnowabletositdownwithoutmy

Englishdictionaryandjustfreelyreadnow!There’llbeawordhereandtherethatI’llhavenoideawhatitmeans,butthefactthatIdon’tneedtolookupevery

secondwordprovesthatmyItalianisimproving!

Asforplannedtrips,tomorrowisthearrivalof20studentsfromanartschoolin

Belgrade(Serbia)thatarestayinginTriesteforaweek,andeachSerbianstudent

ispartneredwithtwentystudentsfrommyschool(mebeingoneofthem).So

tomorrowIwillhaveaSerbiangirlwithmeinmyhouse!Andforthenext7days

the40students(SerbianandItalian–and1Australian)willbetouringthemain

sitesofTriesteandshowingtheSerbianstheartthat’spracticedwithinour

school.TheninAprilwewillbedoingtheexactsamethingagain,butinsteadthe

ItalianstudentswillbegoingtoSerbia!

Allinall,thismonthwasgood,I’mabsolutelylovinglifehereinItaly.Ihonestly

dofeelextremelyhomesickattimes,andeverydayIthinkaboutmyhomein

Australia,it’sforeverinmyheart!
