y para todos los peruanos que, cada vez más, se reencuentran con su país.

GPS Perú nos introduce en el Perú, en su gastronomía, en sus rutas y carreteras que reco-

rren sierra, selva y costa, en destinos conocidos y por conocer, en entrevistas a amantes de

los viajes, cortos o largos, cercanos o remotos, como la vida. GPS Perú habla del campo, y

de las ciudades, y de las selvas, y de los ríos. Es un espacio de encuentro. Porque la vida, al

final, es un viaje, y nosotros estamos aquí, a través de estas páginas llenas de fotos, infor-

mación y color, para dar pistas, orientaciones y sentidos en el camino que recorre cada uno

de nosotros por el Perú.

a space where Peru is shared with all those who arrive to discover it, as well as with all of

those Peruvians who are reconnecting with their country more and more every day.

GPS Peru immerses you in Peru, in its cuisine, along trails and roads that run through

mountains, jungle, and coast; in familiar and unfamiliar destinations; in interviews with

travelers who love either short, long, near, or remote trips, as life is. GPS Peru speaks

of the country side and the cities, and also about forests and rivers. It is a meeting space.

Because in the end life is a journey and our aim here, through these pages filled with

photos, information, and color, is to give you clues, guidelines, and directions on the routes

of Peru that we all may travel.

Uno de los principales destinos turísticos de América nos abre sus puertas para vivir una ciudad intensa durante el día y la noche, y para recorrer sus rutas y caminos, ricos en arqueología, cultura, gastronomía y naturaleza.

One of the top tourist destinations in the Americas opens its doors, allowing us to experience an intense city day and night and wander through trails and paths that are rich in archeology, culture, culinary arts, and nature.


osqo, center of the world, is the vortex where four

great paths or suyos branch crossing the entire ter-

ritory to offer a kaleidoscope of experiences. To the

East, where the path connects this region to the Plateau

and Lake Titicaca, one can find the richest expression of

the Andean baroque Peruvian art. In the Andahuaylillas,

Huaro, and Canincunca temples, under Jesuit manage-

ment, the colorful ceilings and walls tell stories of the

mix between the Andean religiosity and the eagerness to

spread Catholicism.

This path, called the Collasuyo, takes us to the highest apu

(peak) in the cosmovision of the Andes: The Ausangate, a

vast snowy mass that houses llama and alpaca shepherds,

excellent weavers, and some of the best mountain trails in

the country. Across this mountain, from where, according

to Andean belief, life originated, hides the Sinaka, a snowy

Cusco se encuentra a 3,400 metros sobre el nivel del mar y el Valle Sagrado a unos 2,700 metros. De diciembre a marzo es la época de lluvias.

Cusco is located 11,319 feet above sea level and the Sacred Valley is about 8,858 feet. Rainy season runs from December to March.

adventure activities offered in Cusco.

cados y las calles del centro histórico. En ellas la cultura y el arte se unen a la fiesta en todas sus formas, porque quizá el Cusco también sea uno de los departamentos del Perú donde mayor números de festividades se realizan a lo largo del año.

Las fiestasDurante los meses de mayo y julio se celebran varias de las más importantes. El Qoyllor Riti congrega a casi 100 mil per-sonas de todo el Ande, que cantan y bailan durante varios días y noches al Señor de las Nieves. El momento cumbre de la fiesta radica cuando las naciones llegadas de todos los Suyos ascienden al nevado Sinakara a tocar y recoger la nieve, que después fertilizará simbólicamente sus campos de cultivo.

Inmediatamente después de esta fiesta, se celebra el Corpus Christi en el centro del Cusco. En esta celebración, miles de danzantes, ataviados con trajes y vestidos de todos los colo-res, bailan junto a los principales santos católicos antes de entrar en la Catedral que se encuentra en la Plaza de Armas.

Julio es la fiesta del sol, el Inti Raymi, la celebración que per-mite la vida al astro durante el solsticio de invierno, en unos

The holidaysDuring the months of May, June and July they celebrate some

of the most important holidays. The Qoyllor Riti gathers nearly

100 thousand people from all over the Andes, who sing and

climax of the festival takes place when people from all the suy-

os arrive to the Sinakara Snow Mountain to touch and collect

the snow that will symbolically, bring them fertile fields.

Immediately after this event, Corpus Christi is celebrated in

the center of Cusco. In this celebration, thousands of danc-

ers, dressed up in colorful costumes and attires, dance next

to the main Catholic saints before entering the Cathedral, in

the Plaza de Armas.

July is the festival of the sun or Inti Raymi. The celebration in

honor of the sun during the winter solstice, for maintaining

life during months when the mountains endure the coldest

and driest season of the year. For several days, the people

mantas andinas y sobre ellas colocan decenas de va-riedades de papas de todos los tamaños y colores. Hay lisas y rugosas, grandes y pequeñas, blancas, moradas, rojas y amarillas. Los campesinos de Sapaccto conser-van en sus pequeñas chacras de tierra negra más de 700 variedades diferentes de papa de las más de 4000 que existen en el mundo.

They spread out their Andean blankets on the ground

where they display multiple varieties of potatoes of all

sizes and colors. They are smooth and rough, large

peasants preserve in their dark soil, more than 700

different varieties of potatoes from the over 4,000 that

exist in the world.

RIQUEZA PERUANA //// PERUVIAN RICHNESS

En las partes bajas del Valle Sagrado, los campos de maíz cre-cen fuertes y vigorosos junto al río Urubamba. En lugares como Huayllabamba o Lamay se produce el mejor maíz del Perú. Ma-zorcas grandes y de colores que después llegan a las mesas de los mejores hoteles y restaurantes del Cusco y del Valle o que se preparan en pachamancas y cocinas de las familias andinas.

Lo mismo ocurre a lo largo de toda la geografía del Cusco. Huertas pequeñas donde se cultivan, con cuidado y pendien-te de los ciclos de la luna, plantas aromáticas, cereales andi-nos, tubérculos y hortalizas con una característica cada vez más común: el carácter orgánico y ecológico de estos culti-vos. Porque los campesinos de Sapaccto, Lucre, Limatambo o Anta saben que los viajeros que llegan a la capital del imperio incaico quieren, también, conocer los sabores naturales que produce una tierra bendecida por el sol y el clima.

La ciudad del Cusco es, junto a Lima, el principal destino gastronómico del Perú. El campo y la mesa se unen, creando fusiones nuevas junto a platos tradicionales, ofreciendo los sabores auténticos de la Pachamama, la Tierra Madre, que nos cuida y alimenta.

In the lower parts of the Sacred Valley, the cornfields grow

strong and vigorous along the Urubamba River. The best Pe-

ruvian corn is produced in places like Huayllabamba or La-

may. Large and colorful corn ears end up on tables of the

best hotels and restaurants in Cusco and the Valley, or are

prepared in pachamancas (meat and vegetables cooked in an

underground stone pit) and in the kitchens of many Andean

families.

The same is true all over Cusco. Small gardens are an increas-

ingly common feature, where they follow the moon cycles to

carefully grow herbs, Andean cereals, tubers, and vegetables

with a common feature: their organic nature. This is because

the farmers of Sapaccto, Lucre, Limatambo or Anta know that

travelers arriving in the capital of the Inca Empire also want to

try the natural flavors produced in a land blessed by the sun.

The city of Cusco is, together with Lima, the main culinary

destination of Peru. The land and the table join together creat-

ing new fusions with traditional dishes, offering the authentic

flavors of Pachamama, Mother Earth, who cares for us and

nourishes us.

levamos ya cuatro días caminando por los neva-dos más altos que yo haya visto en el sur del Perú. Hemos almorzado una deliciosa causa, bajo el

granizo que caía sobre la carpa, y hemos continuado la ruta por precipicios de color rojizo, con la granizada como piedras heladas que arrojaba el viento sobre nuestra cara, hasta lle-gar a Huampococha Tambo, uno de los cuatro albergues que ofrece Andean Lodges en el llamado Camino del Apu Ausangate.

Las llamas cargan nuestras mochilas, orgullosas, adornadas con lanas de colo-res, recias e intimidantes. Una exigente pero maravillosa caminata de cinco días entre los 4 mil y los 5 mil metros sobre el nivel del mar, donde el oxígeno se consi-gue con concentración, fuerza de voluntad y luchando a cada paso contra los pensa-mientos negativos, esos que nos paralizan por igual en la ciudad o en la montaña.

Se puede andar sobre nieve, sobre piedra o sobre pasto, se puede dar la vuelta a una montaña o subirla radicalmente. Cada curva trae detrás una sorpresa. El silencio es in-mensurable, un lujo con el que no podemos ni soñar quienes vivimos en grandes ciudades. Cada paso es una lágrima de emoción y de cansancio, cada día que pasa te sientes más in-significante ante la geografía tan inmensa pero también más grande de espíritu. Nuestros cerros son sagrados. Llegar tan alto solo para descubrirlo es una experiencia que agradezco y que gustosamente repetiría mañana mismo.

snowy mountains I’ve ever seen in Southern Peru.

We had a delicious Causa for lunch while hearing

the hail drop on our tent. Then we continued our path through

reddish cliffs, feeling the hail against our faces like frozen

stones tossed by the wind. Finally, we reached Huampococha

Tambo, one of four lodges offered by Andean Lodges in the

trek called Road of The Apu Ausangate.

Adorned with colored wools, some

llamas are carrying our gear. They

look proud, sturdy, and intimidating.

A demanding but wonderful five day

walk between 13,000 and 16,400 feet

above sea level, where you are urged

to focus your willpower into getting

the oxygen you need, while fighting

your negative thoughts at every

step, those thoughts that paralyze

you equally in the city or on the

mountain.

You may walk on snow, on rock,

or grass. You may go around a

mountain, or climb it thoroughly. Each turn will

convey a surprise. Silence is infinite. It is a luxury that those

of us who live in big cities cannot even dream about. Each

step is a tear of emotion and fatigue. The passing of days

makes you feel more insignificant, but also bigger in spirit

before such immense geography. Our mountains are sacred.

Climbing such altitudes only to realize this, is an experience I

am grateful for, and would be happy to repeat tomorrow.

Conocido fotógrafo del Perú, fue discípulo de

Minor White y Aaron Siskind. Fundador del

departamento de fotografía del Instituto Gaudí,

del Centro de la Fotografía, de la Fotogalería

Secuencia y de la Galería El Ojo Ajeno. Su obra

ha sido expuesta en el Perú y en el extranjero.

Ha ejercido la docencia en varias universida-

des, y su obra se encuentra en la Galería Lucía

de la Puente.

Me quedo con la costa del Perú, no por negación de la selva o la sierra, sino por tener muchas más horas de vuelo en el desierto costeño. Viví mi niñez en Ica, eso me marcó de alguna manera.

Hace 25 años inicié un proyecto editorial, Lamba-yeque Prehispánico, en el que se registran sitios arqueólogicos de este departamento. En él se incluyen huacas que ya no existen, como conse-cuencia del fenómeno de El Niño.

I prefer the coast of Peru. I don’t despise the jun-

gle or the mountains, only I’ve spent a lot more

time in the coastal desert. I spent my childhood

in Ica and that somehow, marked me.

I started a publishing project 25 years ago, Lam-

bayeque Prehispanico, where the department’s

archeological sites are recorded. It includes hua-

cas (revered historic sites) that no longer exist as

a result of the El Niño phenomenon.

I travel everywhere with my camera and some reading mate-

rial, not necessarily about the places I’m visiting, but about

things that interest me and that have piled

up. I find time to read when I travel.

Spain is my pending trip due to its

geography, its history, and the cultural

wealth of the country.

I’m not a good portrait artist. I work with

landscape, architecture, and space. I have

been criticized because there are no people

in my photos, but as Minor White would say,

there are always people in the shots, someone who looked at

it before and someone who is looking at it now.

Light is essential because it reveals something you don’t

normally see, or better, you discover different aspects of

things throughout the passing of the day.

I’ve been arrested several times, as in Mollendo, when I

took some shots of a train station that was considered a

‘strategic site’.

I took my first photos with my father’s old Kodak camera.

But in reality, I first started on a journey through Arequipa

and Puno over 50 years ago.

For me, photography became a way of capturing the land-

scape and the Peruvian reality, a way to own a region, and a

way to belong to Peru. It is my means to point out something

and to show others what I see and feel.

Siempre que viajo llevo mi cámara y algo de lectura, no nece-sariamente del lugar que visito, sino cosas de mi interés que se acumulan en Lima. En los viajes encuentro el espacio para leer.

Mi viaje pendiente es España por su geogra-fía, su historia y la riqueza cultural de este país.

No soy buen retratista, me desenvuelvo con el paisaje, la arquitectura y el espacio. Me han criticado que en mis fotos no aparece gente, pero como diría Minor White, siempre hay personas en las tomas, alguien que miró antes y alguien que mira ahora.

La luz es fundamental porque revela algo que normalmente no ves, o mejor, te descubre aspectos distintos de las cosas a lo largo del día.

Me han metido preso en varias ocasiones, como en Mollen-do, donde hice tomas de una estación de tren que estaba considerada como ‘sitio estratégico’.

Mis primeras fotos las realicé con una antigua cámara Kodak de mi padre. Pero realmente comencé en un viaje por Arequipa y Puno hace más de 50 años.

Para mí la fotografía se convirtió en la manera de aprehender el paisaje y la realidad peruana, de apropiarme de un territorio, de pertenecer al Perú. Es mi manera personal de señalar algo, de mostrar al otro lo que veo y siento.

Prefiero fotografiar solo, cuando viajo en grupo siento que se roba un tiempo al resto, o a mí, que puede frenar el ritmo del viaje.

I prefer to photograph by myself. When I travel in group, I feel that I take someone else’s time, or they take it from me, and that slows down the pace of the trip.

El camino inca

Día 1: Los porteadores y el río UrubambaEl acceso al Camino Inca es limitado a 500 personas por día de las que unas 160 son turistas, y se realiza con un operador autorizado por el Ministerio de Cultura encargado de toda la logística necesaria. En ella se incluyen cocineros, guías y por-teadores, llegados de comunidades de altura como Huilloq y Patacancha, que caminan como si estuviesen volando. El viaje comienza con las balanzas, y es que los porteadores cargan un máximo de 25 kilos que se miden escrupulosamente. El resto lo lleva el pasajero.

Day 1: The porters and the Urubamba RiverAdmission to the trail is limited to 500 people per day of

El primer día es suave. Se inicia en Piscacucho, en el kilómetro 82, donde se encuentra ubicado el control de acceso. Durante la jornada cami-namos unas seis horas, entre los 2,800 y 3,000 metros de altitud, antes de llegar al campamen-to de Huayllabamba. Pasamos por sitios arqueo-lógicos, como Llaqtapata, campos de cultivo y valles, con el río Urubamba a nuestro lado.

Día 2: Valles majestuosos en la tierra de las sombrasEs el día más exigente. Durante cuatro horas ascendemos el abra Warmiwarñusca de 4,200 metros de altura, por un amplio y verde valle en el que el sol juega con las nubes, creando som-bras móviles y misteriosas bajo un cielo azul im-ponente. A medida que subimos la vegetación cambia, pasamos de arbustos, molles y flores de la sierra baja, a los bosques de queñua, árboles de troncos retorcidos, colorados y madera dura.

at an altitude between 9,200 and 9,800 feet

Day 2: Majestic valleys in the land of the shadowsThis is the most demanding day. It takes us four

hours to climb to the opening Warmiwarñusca at

13,800 feet, through a wide green valley where

the sun plays with the clouds, creating moving

and mysterious shadows under a stunning blue

sky. The vegetation changes as we ascend, from

shrubs, pepper trees, and Low Mountain flow-

ers, to forests of queuña and gnarled trees with

red and hard wood.

At the top of our hike, we experience a much de-

Día 3: Bosques encantados y musgos de coloresEl bosque de nubes es uno de los ecosistemas más particulares del mundo. Es la transición entre la selva baja y la sierra, y en él se congregan especímenes únicos, cuyos protagonistas son osos de anteojos, gallitos de las rocas, líquenes, helechos y orquídeas, que colorean un bosque exuberante, intrincado y húmedo.

Hay sitios arqueológicos ocultos en la vegetación, cuyas pie-dras están cubiertas de musgos de todos los colores, rojos, verdes, amarillos, blancos o anaranjados. Todo tiene una at-mósfera como de cuento de hadas. Las nubes van y vienen. La

Day 3: Enchanted forests and colorful mossThe cloud forest is one of the most unique ecosystems in

the world. It is the transition between the low jungle and the

mountain range, and it is a unique organization of specimens,

whose protagonists are spectacled bears, cock of the rocks,

lichens, ferns, and orchids that saturate a lush, intricate, and

humid forest with color.

There are archaeological sites hidden in the vegetation,

where the rocks are wrapped in mosses of all colors: red,

green, yellow, white, or orange. Everything here invites a

fairytale atmosphere. The clouds come and go. The fog cov-

Su majestuosidad sólo es posible por la ubicación en que se encuentra, rodeada de los cerros verdes y verticales del bosque de nubes, y de los apus andinos, como el Salkantay, el Pumasillo o la Verónica que están cubiertos de nieve y que nos acompañaron durante todo el viaje.

camp, located at 11,880 feet high, where we set up our tents

next to a cliff. The sunset shows the last colors of the sun in the

starting with the snowy peaks and gradually filling the inland

valleys with iridescent colors.

Day 4: Machu Picchu

After traveling 27 miles, we walk through the Inti Punku or

Puerta del Sol (in English, Door to the Sun), with a unique per-

spective of the Ciudadela de Piedra (in English, Stone Citadel).

Its location renders it magnificent as it is surrounded by green

and vertical hills of the cloud forest as well as by Andean peaks

like Salkantay, Pumasillo or Veronica, which are covered in

snow and have escorted us throughout our entire journey.

Last March marked the second year of Peru’s diplomatic pres-

ence in the Emirate. Therefore, Ambassador Amador Velazquez

Amador and Gustavo Bravo in charge of the consular affairs, in-

vited Casa Andina’s Chef Javier Morante, and Jorge Ortiz, who is

the event organizer of the Casa Andina Private Collection Mira-

flores, as well as William Gonzales, the Chef of the Casa Andina

Classic Chincha to take part in the Peruvian Food Festival Week.

The gathering was held at the restaurant La Brasserie in the

capital’s JW Marriot hotel. They offered Peruvian dishes such

as, Ceviches, Causas, Pulpo al olivo (octopus topped with an ol-

ive sauce), Jalea de mariscos (a shellfish dish), Papa a la huan-

caína (potatoes topped with a creamy chili sauce), and the most

popular dishes: Ají de gallina (a creamy chili chicken dish), and

Arroz con mariscos (fried seafood rice). They also prepared

desserts such as, Suspiro a la limeña, Aguaymanto cheese

cake, Mango meringue, and Passion fruit mousse, while a

group of Peruvian dancers performes the Marinera. Finally, the

ultimate expression of Arabic hospitality: coffee flavored with

spices and tea.

En marzo de este año se celebró el segundo año de presencia diplomática del Perú en el emirato. Por ello, el embajador Amador Velázquez y la sección consular a cargo de Gustavo Bravo, invitaron a Javier Morante, chef corporativo de Casa Andina, Jorge Ortiz, responsable de eventos del Casa Andina Private Collection Miraflores y William Gonzáles, chef del Casa Andina Classic de Chincha, a participar en la semana gastronómica de la comida peruana.

El encuentro se celebró en el restaurante La Brasserie que JW Marriot tiene en la capital. En él se ofrecieron ceviches, causas, pulpo al olivo, jalea de mariscos, papas a la huancaí-

na siendo los platos que más gustaron el ají de gallina y el arroz con mariscos. Para hacer esto posible, los cocine-ros viajaron con 60 kilos de ají desde el Perú. También se prepararon suspiro a la limeña, cheese cake de aguaymanto, merengado de mango y mousse de maracuyá, mientras un grupo de peruanos llegados de Roma bailaban marinera. Para terminar, la máxima expresión de hospitalidad árabe: café aromatizado con especias y té.

Para poder preparar el menú, los cocineros viajaron con sesenta kilos de ají desde el Perú.

l mar es luminoso, generoso y está travesado por la corriente cálida de El Niño. A partir de octubre, se ob-servan ballenas pasar en sus largas rutas migratorias.

Nadan tortugas y saltan delfines. La playa, en forma de luna en cuarto creciente, acoge a bañistas, surfistas, amantes de la pesca, viajeros, y varias especies de aves, como fragatas, cor-moranes o piqueros, que vuelan bajo el cielo azul.

Los cerros son ocres y marrones, con la característica vegeta-ción del bosque seco ecuatorial, ese ecosistema único que se ubica en el norte del Perú y sur de Ecuador, reconocido por la UNESCO como Reserva de Biosfera para el mundo.

warm current of El Niño. After October, whales are seen

passing along on their long migration trips. There are

turtles swimming and dolphins jumping. This crescent-shaped

beach, welcomes swimmers, surfers, fishing enthusiasts, and

travelers as well as several species of birds including frigates,

cormorants and boobies, flying under a blue sky.

The hills are ocher and brown, and display the natural dry

forest vegetation. This unique ecosystem from northern Peru

to the south of Ecuador, recognized by UNESCO as a Bio-

sphere Reserve of the world.

Casa Andina Select Tumbes

Estamos en Zorritos, una localidad de pescadores ubicada a unos 50 kilómetros de la frontera ecuatoriana que fue, a fines del siglo XIX, el primer centro productor petrolero del país, y uno de los más importantes de Sudamérica. De esa época que-dan algunas plataformas petrolíferas que se ven en alta mar.

Está rodeado de áreas protegidas, como los manglares de Tumbes, la Reserva Nacional de Tumbes o los Cerros de Amo-tape, donde se puede caminar, cabalgar y observar aves mul-ticolores que sólo viven allí. Esos bosques están formados por algarrobos y otras especies resistentes a la sequedad, y es que en estos lugares hay una extraña combinación entre lo árido y lo verde. En algunas de sus quebradas también hay aguas termales y piscinas arcillosas que se aplican en diferentes tra-tamientos corporales.

Zorritos es cálido y acogedor, sus noches son festivas y cos-mopolitas, y su gastronomía generosa y excelente. Por ello, se está convirtiendo en uno de los principales destinos del norte del Perú. Un lugar mágico, un sitio de descanso, un espacio para la aventura.

We are in Zorritos, a fishing village located about 31 miles

from the Ecuadorian border, which was, in the late nine-

teenth century, the first oil producing center of the country

and one of the most important in South America. There are

still some oil rigs visible at sea.

Zorritos is surrounded by protected areas such as the Man-

groves of Tumbes, the National Reserve of Tumbes, or the

Amotape Hills, where you can hike, ride horses, or watch

unique colorful birds only found in this area. There are carob

trees and other drought resistant species in the forest and in

these places there is a peculiar combination of dry vegetation

and greenery. In some of its ravines there are hot springs and

pools to take mud and clay baths for a full body treatment.

Zorritos is a warm and welcoming place, with festive and

cosmopolitan nights and generous and excellent cuisine.

That is why it is soon becoming one of the main destinations

of northern Peru. A magical site and a place for relaxation

n la selva amazónica lo normal es ser gente. Ani-males, plantas e incluso lugares como cuevas o caídas de agua, como explican los mitos, tienen

alma y un espíritu cargado de intención y voluntad. El hombre y la mujer selváticos deben saber relacionarse con ese mundo complejo en el que el éxito en la chacra, el parto, la cacería, la salud o la enfermedad, dependen de muchos seres y fuerzas que interactúan entre sí.

El pensamiento occidental se basa en la contraposición entre naturaleza y cultura. La naturaleza está ahí para nuestro uso y transformación. La cultura la tenemos no-sotros porque somos humanos. En las culturas amazóni-cas, no hay oposición entre naturaleza y cultura porque todo está lleno de humanidad. Si lo normal es ser gente, la diferencia viene de cómo todos ellos, esas huanganas, otorongos, tucanes, ayahuascas o lupunas, ven y se rela-cionan con el mundo. La vida y el éxito en la selva pasan por saber establecer relaciones.

n the Amazon rainforest, being a person is the

norm. Animals, plants, and even places like caves

and waterfalls, according to myths, have a soul

and a spirit full of intention and will. The human in the

jungle should learn how to relate to a complex world

where succeeding on the farm, in childbirth, in hunt-

ing, in health, or in illness, depends on the interaction

of many beings and forces.

Western mentality is based on the struggle between

nature and culture. Nature is there for us to use it and

transform it. Culture is ours because we are human. In

Amazonian culture, there is no opposition between na-

ture and culture because everything is full of humanity.

Since being a person is the norm, the difference is sole-

ly based on how Peccaries, Jaguars, Toucans, as well as

Ayahuasca or Kapok plants, see and interact with each

other and the world. Life and success in the jungle de-

pend on knowing how to establish those relationships.

Esta visión del mundo tiene una actualidad cada vez mayor y más urgente. El futuro de la humanidad pasa por entender que no podemos hacer cualquier cosa con un planeta, la Tie-rra, cuyos recursos son limitados. Ese futuro depende de cómo crear relaciones nuevas con las plantas, los ríos, los mares y los animales que satisfagan nuestras necesidades, y que per-mitan a nuestros hijos seguir disfrutando de las riquezas que nos rodean. O sea, devolver la humanidad que la naturaleza también tiene.

Recuperando la selvaCerca a Puerto Maldonado, un grupo de 17 familias han fre-nado la desforestación que rodea a la ciudad y han conver-tido pastizales, zonas áridas y chacras baldías, en una selva que parece virgen. No decidieron sacar oro de las quebradas ni cortar árboles, sino recuperar el bosque y mostrarlo al mundo con la ayuda de las empresas de turismo Rainforest Expeditions, Responsible Travel y Mundea Tours, e institu-ciones como el BID, la Corporación Andina de Fomento, la Sociedad Peruana de Derecho Ambiental y Odebrecht.

This way of seeing the world is growing by the day. The pro-

cesses and negotiating styles that many companies are using

to intervene in the Amazon are examples of this. The future

of humanity relies on the understanding that we cannot just

do anything to Planet Earth, whose resources are limited. Our

future depends on the new relationships that we create with

plants, rivers, oceans, and animals in order to meet our needs,

but still enable our children to continue enjoying the abun-

dance that surrounds us. That is, the restitution of the sense

of humanity to the forest as a whole.

Recovering the jungle

Close to Puerto Maldonado, the capital of biodiversity, a group

of 17 families have slowed down the process of deforestation

in the surrounding areas of the city by turning grasslands, arid

zones, and barren fields, into a forest that seems untouched.

They decided to not extract gold from the creeks or cut trees

as illegal loggers do, but to reclaim the forest and show it to

the world with the assistance of tourist companies such as

Rainforest Expeditions, Responsible Travel, and Mundea Tours

Una parte de él, a la que se puede llegar en vehículo, cubre 13 kilómetros junto a la Zona de Amortigua-miento de la Reserva Nacional Tambopata. They are all passionate about nature, which can be seen in

the 16 different enterprises that make up the Tambopata Ec-

otourism Corridor. Part of this route, which can be reached by

car, covers eight miles along the buffer zone of the Tambopata

National Reserve. Other Initiatives cover areas along the river,

such as the Castañal Valera, the Ñape Ethno-botanic Center of

Traditional Medicine, the El Gato Lodge, declared as a Private

Conservation Area, and the Fundo Santa Rosa of tropical fruits,

among others.

Iniciativas para todos los gustosEn torno a una mesa de madera, Francisco Balarezo afirma que “se sueña viajando todo el tiempo por caminos grandes”. Quizá como los caminos que, junto a su esposa Beatriz Ya-bar, recorrió hace 60 años a lomo de burro por Madre de Dios, hasta que encontraron el lugar donde viven y que llaman El Parayso. En él han levantado, con la ayuda de su hijo Percy,

varios bungalows rodeados de frutales y palmeras, han dise-ñado senderos de interpretación que pasan junto a enormes lupunas, cauchos y catahuas, y han armado un canopy con el que se pueden recorrer las copas de los árboles y ver la fauna que vive en ellas.

En la playa Botafogo los atardeceres son de todos los colores, y también hay kayaks con los que se puede navegar por el Tam-bopata y observar grupos de huanganas cruzando el río, o ron-socos orgullosos tomando sol en la arena. Víctor Zambrano del Refugio Kerenda Homet, muestra sus fotos de cuando sus 40 hectáreas de terreno eran un enorme pastizal con unas pocas vacas flacas. Tras haber sembrado 20 mil árboles en los últimos 19 años, hoy está lleno de vegetación y lianas donde viven mo-nos, loros, sachavacas y guacamayos, y jardines de plantas me-dicinales por los que pasan investigadores del mundo entero.

The experiences offered include activities such as tours and

day trips or tours that take several days. The difference is that

besides the immersion in nature, the visitor gets to share the

life of those heroes and their own personal stories, as well as a

variety of options which specialize each product: yoga, ecolog-

ical farms, animal recovery, fishing, volunteering, medicine, or

simply fulfill a sensation of wellbeing.

Advantages for everyone.Sitting at wooden table by the river, Francisco Balarezo tells

me ‘that he dreams all the time about traveling through wide

paths”. Perhaps like the ones he traveled with his wife Beatriz

60 years ago through Madre de Dios, until they reached the

place they live now. They named it El Parayso (The Paradise).

Their son Percy has helped them build several bungalows

surrounded by fruit trees and palms. They have also designed

several interpretation trails that pass along huge Kapok, Rub-

ber, and Catahua trees, and they also built a canopy where you

see the wildlife and orchids that live among the treetops.

Botafogo Beach has colorful sunsets. There are kayaks avail-

able to navigate the Tambopata reserve and watch groups of

Peccaries crossing the river, or proud Capybaras sunbathing

on the sand. Victor Zambrano from the Kerenda Homet Ref-

uge, shows old pictures when his 100 acres of land was only

a huge pasture with a few scrawny cows. After having plant-

ed 20,000 trees in the last 19 years, everything is now full

of trees and vines where there are monkeys, parrots, tapirs,

and macaws, and gardens with medicinal plants visited by

several schools from Lima and international researchers. H

hectáreas y, también con voluntarios y visitantes, cuidar y reintroducir en su hábitat a cotomonos, guacamayos, vena-dos, osos hormigueros o coatíes.

Pierina Zlatar and her two daughters, open the doors of their

Eco-village Kapievi that has huts camouflaged among the plants

and orchids. Here you can take Ayahuasca, do yoga and medita-

tion sessions, eat vegetarian food, or enjoy practicing permacul-

ture; the agro-ecological system that mimics the principle of the

jungle diversity. Kapievi also has Amazon art workshops and a

volunteer program for visitors to spend long periods of time there.

Magaly Salinas, who was born in Lima, used to collaborate with

several government institutions and the environmental police

in recovering wildlife from the black market. She finally decided

to leave everything behind and moved to Tambopata, to orga-

nize a lodge and a Center for Rehabilitation and Conservation of

Wildlife. With the assistance of volunteers and visitors, they care

for Howlers, Macaws, Peccaries, Deer, Anteaters, and Coatis

brought by the local police and reintroduce them to their habitat.

ta Ecotourism Corridor, there are lodging, guides, gear, and

also conventional activities, such as the tours to Sandoval lake,

night walks to watch alligators, or interpretation trails to coll-

pas (feeding areas) of macaws and mammals.

These people share with us their stories of heroism and ad-

venture, looking for new allies in travelers and visitors, be-

cause they are sure that mankind is also part of the plants,

animals and places that shape up the jungles of Peru.
