SuMMER DROP IN PROGRAM 2012

What a great summer! We had lots of kids come out to enjoy our programming this year and with the exciting field trips and awesome activities at the Centre we had such a great two months together. We are so happy to be able to provide such a wonderful program for our community.

This year, we participated in the Harvest Food Challenge and teamed up with Laura Secord Community Child Care Centre. We went for a walk around the neighbourhood to drop off letters explaining what Winnipeg Harvest needed, and then returned a week later to pick up the food items. Thanks to all our neighbours who donated, it’s great to be able to help out those in need.

We went on a lot of great field trips including: The Science Gallery and Planetarium at the Manitoba Museum, Kid City, Crock-a-Doodle, The Assiniboine Park Zoo, Fort Whyte Alive, and the ever popular Fun Mountain. A big thank you to Sargent Sundae who provided some yummy ice creams for the kids after our zoo trip! A special field trip was provided by Slices Pizza on Valour Street at Portage Avenue wherein the children got to experience pizza making with the professionals and got to have a fun pizza snack. Slices Pizza was very kind to provide this field trip to us free of cost! Thanks Slices, it was a great time!

Great guests came to visit us at the centre and we want to give them a big thank you! Kim Brennan who did our lovely henna tattoos, Kristen Verin-Treusch from Muddy Water Tours who told us the ghostly tales of the Vaughn Street Jailhouse, Constable Glen Kostyk and his search and rescue dog (Asia) and the Winnipeg Police Department for bringing us a cool cruiser car to explore, Sally and Ruth from the Ruff House Rowdies who always provide such an amazing dog show who work for an amazing dog rescue centre: Hull’s Haven Border Collie Rescue, Fun Renters for our bouncy castle, and our friends who brought us the petting zoo. A giant thank you to our own Paula Roeder from Paula’s Face Painting, who provided our kids with amazing painted faces, we are so lucky that we have such a talented artist as part of our R. A. Steen family.

We had some awesome days here at the centre including Pirate Day, Tie Dye Day, Taste the World Lunch, Mystery Day, the Haunted Community Centre’s Nightmare on “Palmerston” Street, Gold Rush Day, and so many more! A big thanks to my fellow summer staff members, who did such a great job! We had some great crafting days, some fun board game days, some wacky water days, and some fun dress up days. We are so glad we had such a fun group to enjoy these activities with.

We hope everyone had a great summer and we’ll see you next year!

The Robert A. Steen Community Centre would like to thank Jacquelyn Klassen, Cassie Halpenny and Charlie Brockman for their hard work, enthusiasm and dedication. Once again this summer we were very fortunate to hire three summer students through the urban Green Team Program.

Charlie did an amazing job keeping the grounds and flower garden looking clean and tidy. Charlie weeded, planted, picked up garbage and even maintained the Nelly McClung Park and Laura Secord School field. It was a hot and busy summer but he did get a couple days of play with the kids. Charlie helped out with the other Green team students on days when there was a lot going on in the Centre such as the Carnival day and the Haunted House.

We were very pleased to have Jacquelyn back with us and also, to have the help of Cassie. They were a lot of fun and the children really enjoyed all the activities they did together. Jacquelyn and Cassie played games with the children, nursed their bumps and bruises and wiped away tears. They were a pleasure to have at the Centre this summer.

Programs such as the urban Green Team enable R. A. Steen C. C. to provide awesome drop-in programs and keep our communities beautiful.

Thank you to Nicole, Jacquelyn, Cassie and Charlie.

Green Team 2012

It’s the end of another great school year. We had a lot of belly laughs and busy days. We have some great artists here at the centre and our walls were constantly decorated with the beautiful artwork the children produced.

As usual, dodge ball was the favourite activity at the centre, but we enjoyed a lot of soccer baseball days, crafts and much more. We would all like to congratulate all of the grade six graduates. I can’t tell you how much we’ll miss seeing you everyday after school. We wish you all the best in your new Junior High Schools and we know how, amazingly bright you all are! Come visit anytime.

Our grade six children created a fabulous quilt that is now on display at the centre which represents their last year as attendees of the after-school program and as elementary school students. It’s a lovely creation, so come down to the centre and see it.

We are so excited for our 2012/2013 new school year. Thanks to all the children who brighten our day! We’ll see you in September!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our floor hockey supervisor Chris Bestvater, who made floor hockey a fun activity our kids look forward to coming to every week. Thank you to Wanda Johnson and Jacob Miller for keeping our basketball kids entertained and interested in this great sport, and to Jaquelyn Klassen and Camille Squair for keeping those indoor mini soccer feet on their toes. A special thanks to Lee McDonald, for picking up the Jackrabbit Hockey program and making it another rewarding and successful season for all our players.

We had a new Mini Soccer convenor this summer. Theresa Proctor had her hands full with a record number of registrations for this past mini soccer season, thank you Theresa for taking on the challenge. She handled it like a pro with the guidance of our outgoing convenor, Shawna Nagler-Neufeld. Shawna was an excellent convenor for our little tykes and has now taken on the role of Youth Soccer convenor to our older children who are advancing in the sport. We appreciate Shawna’s support and help by continuing to be an inspiration to new convenors and coaches.

Volunteers are the back-bone of our community. They are unsung heroes who are willing to share their time, talents and energy to make our programs run better and smoother, and help lighten our load. It’s important to let each of them know just how much they are appreciated.

Thanks to the great support of all the coaches and convenors, we had an awesome sports season this past year. We’ve received an amazing amount of help from the community with registrations and people stepping forward to make the programs a success. We are looking forward to this new season and all the fun it will bring to the Centre and the Community.

We have been very fortunate here at the Robert A. Steen Community Centre to have had Kevin Bumstead as our hockey convenor for the past 4 – 5 years. Kevin took on the task of starting up our Jackrabbit and Learn to Skate programs, which have grown in popularity. Kevin has been a valuable asset to our community centre working tirelessly to make learning how to skate and introducing new skaters to the sport of hockey fun for everyone.

We all recognize that hockey at the Robert A. Steen Community Centre has been the success it is because of the work that Kevin has put in over the years. Now that it’s time for Kevin move on, we would like to thank him for his help, leadership, dedication and hard work that he has freely given. Kevin has been an excellent example of what a community volunteer is all about. Thank you Kevin!
