Loaves & Fishes

Once a month Loaves & Fishes (Soup Kitchen) prepares a meal for

approximately 40 families. Times are difficult for many of our

neighbors and this is a small help for them. In August we will

prepare tuna mac salad and are in need of many cans of solid

white albacore water packed tuna. We are asking for your

assistance to help with the tuna. You may leave the tuna in the

church kitchen or in the back of church by Mon., Aug. 26. Please

mark the tuna for the soup kitchen. Any questions, call Sally

Brennan (376-6223). Also if you have extra produce from your

gardens, please consider donating to the Loaves & Fishes.

Thank you!

Pastor’s Desk

Goin’ Fishin’

I will be joining my family on the St. Lawrence River for our annual fishing derby this weekend. Covering Masses in my absence will be Father Jim Shurtleff, one of our retired priests currently residing in Ogdensburg. Father Shurtleff may also be joined by one of his friends, Father Hugh Grace, another retired priest who is up visiting from the New York City area. Father Shurtleff is no stranger to our area as he has been here several times in the past covering Masses. Thank God for our retired priests allowing our pastor to get away to catch the BIG bass … or maybe just to sit in the boat and try.

Father Jay

Women’s Group Beginning Fall 2019 All women parishoners are welcomed to join “Women of Grace” - an international Catholic apostolate initiated by Johnette (Benkovic) Williams of Eternal Word Catholic Television Network. In Johnette’s words, you are invited to “come embark upon a transforming journey as you explore the great call and gift of your femininity… looking to the Blessed Virgin, Mary, who is our exemplar…” and “discover your great dignity and vocation as a daughter of God and the feminine genius that is yours by virtue of your gender.” This group will be an aid to any other apostolate or individual ministry you may already be involved in and will begin with a study on Living the Abundant Life and remain ongoing as a Women of Grace gathering for learning and growing in our faith and closer to our God and one another through viewing Catholic movies and documentaries, etc.

An information gathering is scheduled for Saturday, August 24, 2019

@ 9:00 AM. You may contact Diane Damon-Cole @ 315-778-6629. Also, you may visit: www.womenofgrace.com

Mass Etiquette: (We ask that you read and practice.)

Fast before Mass. It is Church law that one fasts for at least 1 hour before receiving Holy Communion. Wa-ter and medicine can be consumed, of course. The purpose is to help us prepare to receive Jesus in the Eucharist

Don’t chew gum in church. It breaks your fast, it’s dis-tracting, it is considered impolite in a formal setting, and it doesn’t help us pray better.

Cross yourself with Holy Water on entering and leav-ing the Church. This is a reminder of our Baptism, which made us members of Christ’s Church. Just try to remain mindful of what is happening when you do so and don’t do it without saying a prayer.

Dress modestly and appropriately. Wear your Sunday best. As Catholics, we believe that Gond comes down to meet us at every Mass. So, why would you not dress up?

Show up at least a few minutes early. Getting to Mass early allows you to pray and prepare yourself better for Mass.

Don’t sit at the end of the pew. Rather, sit in the middle so others don’t have to climb over you.

When we enter and leave the Church, genuflect toward the Tabernacle. Christ is present for our sake. By allowing our right knee to touch the floor, we acknowledge He is our Lord and God. If someone is physically unable to genuflect, then a bow is suffi-cient. During Mass, if you pass in front of the Altar or Tabernacle, bow reverently.

Bow before receiving Holy Communion. If it is God, then show your respect with a bow of the head. This is an ancient practice that has continued even to this day.

Do not receive from the Chalice if you are sick. This is an act of charity and it is not necessary to receive the Precious Blood in order to receive the entirety of Je-sus’ Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity.

Do not leave early. We should stay for the Priest’s reces-sion and the hymn that accompanies it, if there is one. It is a good custom to offer a prayer of thanksgiving after Mass is over.

FUN, FAITH AND ECOLOGY:

Leadership Retreats for youth ages 12 to 17 This year the Youth Department has put together 3 won-

derfully unique opportunities for young people aged, 12 to

17 to learn, have fun and become empowered to be

“Shepard’s of the Earth.” Each location will offer a different

opportunity for young people to engage nature, each other

and their faith. The emphasis of each retreat is “learning

through interactive fun”. That means, they will have a great

time learning about their gifts and strengths and how they

can use them to lead others in caring for our precious

home, Earth. Youth are encouraged to attend any or all of

the following retreat days:

September 7th-Beaver Camp

September 14th-The Wild Center

September 28th-Ausable Chasm

The cost is $25.00 per event and includes lunch.

The registration deadline for all events is August 29th.

VBS Week is a Wrap! Even with a smaller attendance this year, fun was had by all the kids who attended VBS over the last week! I would like to say a HUGE “Thank You” to the following Youth helpers: Sydney & Brody Brown, Ireland Earl, Stephanie Beyer, Drew Ortlieb, Noah Comet, Olivia & Anna King, Michael Fayle , Alexandra Mullin, and Shelby & Brenna Law! These older youth are all fabulous role models for our younger kids! Thank you to those that donated food and/or items for lunches, activities, and games! Thank you to our Adult Volunteers that helped in the kitchen and with the activities! VBS would not be as successful as it is without the help of all of these volunteers!
