ทองถนอกมากมาย ท�าใหกลายเปนเมองทก�าลงไดรบความนยมในหมนก

ปนจกรยานทงในและตางประเทศ ทแวะเวยนมาทองเทยวในหลากหลาย

เสนทางเพมมากขนอยางเหนไดชดเจน

อบจ.สมทรปราการ ไดตระหนกและเลงเหนถงประโยชนของการ

ทองเทยวเชงนเวศในรปแบบของการปนจกรยาน จงก�าหนดนโยบาย

สงเสรมและสนบสนนดวยการจดท�าโครงการปรบปรงเสนทางปนจกรยานให

ไดมาตรฐานและปลอดภย มปายบอกเสนทางชดเจน โดยจะน�ารองแหงแรก

ทบรเวณกระเพาะหมหรอคงบางกะเจา สวรรคของนกปนเปนแหงแรก..

กระผมและคณะผบรหาร อบจ. รวมไปถงพนองชาวสมทรปราการ

พรอมเปดประตตอนรบนกทองเทยวทกทานแลวครบ..มาเยอนเราสกครง

แลวทานจะรจกสมทรปราการในมตทยงไมเคยรมากอน

Tourism is not the only highlight of Samut Prakan. The

geographical setting of a fertile coastal town by the Gulf rich

with histories including native traditions and culture make

Samut Prakan a popular destination among cyclists, both Thais

and foreigners. The number of cyclists visiting various biking

trails is noticeably increased.

Samut Prakan Provincial Administrative Organization realizes

the benefits of biking eco-tourism. Therefore, we set our policy

to promote and support the activity by improving the biking trails

to meet standards and for safety of cyclists with clear signage.

The pilot project is at the ‘pig stomach’ area or known as

Bang Krachao bend, the first heaven for cyclists

“Healthy Lifestyle” is nowadays a popular trend with people

of all ages and genders. Muscle fitness girls love “Hot Yoga”, young

and adventurous men love extreme sport or walking for health

among the elderly. Cycling is another popular and in-trend healthy

activity because it is not limited by the venue, time and money.

Though the economic and social development in Samut Prakan

is at the leaping speed that modern civilization in various fields is

continuously spreaded to local communities, but Samut Prakan is

still regarded as an area full of natural fertility. Thus, it is not a

surprise that the number of visitors to Samut Prakan is on the rise

every year especially foreign visitors who like healthy lifestyle and

activity such as cycling in the natural surrounding with native way

of life. In this issue, @SAMUTPRAKAN Travel would like to present

4 biking routes that will provide cyclists with 4 different cycling

experiences that we guarantee will provide what visitors are looking

for be it touring, relaxing and health.

For nature lovers who cherish lush green scenery, serenity

and fresh air, it is the biking route in “Bang Krachao”, the lung of the

capital. For professional cyclists who want to make time record at

Time Trial or Spinning Level for 90 rounds or above, they should not

miss the “Suvarnabhumi Green Biking Trail” where there are world

standard biking track and many fellow professional cyclists. And

lastly, a relaxing route where cyclists can go leisurely on the route

“by the canal in search of storm lanterns.”

There are many other experiences that visitors can find in

Paknam be it in the column “Stories about Paknam” where we will

take readers to visit mushroom farm. New horizon of tourism that

is simple but colorful with community native way of life is found

in the Relaxing Column taking readers to Khun Samut Jeen Home

Stay originated by villagers in the community. Bamboo break-

water and rock-filled embankment are the last frontier defending

the erosion are built by the villagers. Visit to the house of Thai

classical music instrument maker where readers will learn about

the enchanting art of melody making which is the foundation of

สงกรานตพระประแดง จงหวดสมทรปราการ เปนอกหนงสสนงานประเพณในชวงเทศกาล

สงกรานตของชาวไทยท ไดรบความนยม โดยในปน ไดรบเกยรตจาก นายพนจ หาญพาณชย ผวา

ราชการจงหวดสมทรปราการ เปนประธานในพธเปด พรอมดวยแขกผมเกยรตรวมงานจำานวนมาก

ประเพณสงกรานตพระประแดง หรอทเรยกวา “สงกรานตปากลด” เปนรปแบบสงกรานต

ทรกษาวฒนธรรมของชาวรามญทสบทอดกนมาแตโบราณ โดยสงกรานตพระประแดงจะจด

ในวนสงทายของสงกรานต (ถดจากวนท 13 เมษายน อกหนงอาทตย) ในปนจดขนระหวาง

วนท 17-19 เมษายน 2558 ซงทกหมบานจะรวมใจกนจดขบวนแหทมความยงใหญและความ

สวยงามตระการตาดวยขบวนรถบปผาชาต ขบวนแหนางสงกรานต ขบวนสาวรามญ–หนม

ลอยชาย ทยงคงรกษาขนบธรรมเนยมประเพณอนเปนเอกลกษณเฉพาะตวของสงกรานต

พระประแดงทดงดดสายตานกทองเทยวทวโลก

Songkran festival in Phra Pradaeng, Samut Prakan Province is one of Thailand’s

popular festivities of celebrating the Songkran festival. This year’s festival was presided

over by Samut Prakan governor Phinit Hanpanich and also honored guests.

Songkran in Phra Pradaeng or also known as “Songkran Paklat” is the Mon’s

tradition which has been continuously held since the old days. It is usually held

on the last day of Songkran festival (one week after April 13). This year’s festival

was held on April 17-19, 2015. Every village works together to create a beautiful

parade, including elaborate floral wagons, which Mon girls and Loi Chai boys and

Miss Songkran also tag along for the ceremony. It always preserves the unique

characteristic of Songkran in Phra Pradaeng which attracts tourists worldwide.

ดาวดงส ชาวมอญจงนยมใชเสาหงสและธงตะขาบมารวม

ขบวนแหคกน เพราะเชอกนวา หงส คอสญลกษณของรามญ

ประเทศ หมายถงผนแผนดนทกวางใหญไพศาลและอดม

สมบรณ สวน ธงตะขาบ เชอกนวา ตะขาบเปนสตวทมล�าตว

ยาวมาก มเทามาก มเขยวเลบทมพษ สามารถตอสกบศตร

ทมาระราน และรกษาตวเองได เปรยบเสมอนคนมอญทมเคย

หวาดหวนตอขาศกศตร สามารถปกปองคมครองประเทศ

ของตนเองได เปนตน

การละเลนพนบานตามวฒนธรรมชาวรามญแตดง

เดม แตละหมบานจะจดใหมการละเลนสะบารามญ

การแสดงทะแยมอญ รวมถงการกวนกาละแม ซงเปนของด

เมองพระประแดง สรางสสนใหสงกรานตพระประแดงได

ไมนอยเลยทเดยว

It is the Raman’s traditional game. Every village

usually holds Raman Saba game, Ta Yae Mon per-

formance and traditional Raman Kalamae cooking

which is the popular souvenir of Phra Pradaeng. These

traditions spice up Songkran festival in Phra Pradaeng.

Another enjoyment of Songkran festival

in Phra Pradaeng is Miss Songkran and

Loi Chai Boys contests that make the

ceremony in Phra Pradaeng more special

than others. The contests are uniquely

held in Phra Pradaeng where young

people wear Mon traditional costume

and participate in the competitions in

front of Phra Pradaeng City Hall, Samut

Prakan Province.

One of remarkable identities of the Mon people in

Phra Pradaeng is Swan and Centipede Flag Parade which

is held to worship and celebrate the return of Buddha

from the Tavatimsa Heaven. The Mon people usually hold

a parade of swan poles and centipede flags because

it is believed that swan is the symbol of the country of

Raman which refers to a tremendous and abundant land.

Centipede flag refers to centipedes that have very long

body, lots of legs and poisons and can fight against all

invaders. It is like the Mon people who are never afraid

of enemies and able to protect their mother land.

Bird and fish releasing rite is usually held at Wat Prodket Chettharam

Royal Temple. It is believed that any person who sets animals free

will be saved from their own bad fortune and will live a long life. After

finishing the rite, young people from the villages respectfully splash water

to each other. The people of Phra Pradaeng have been preserving this

manner of celebration for a long time.

Herbal Mosquito Repellent Incense Stick House is a small and micro community enterprise

founded by the group’s president Suwat Nuansa-ard. Various kinds of natural herbs found

in the community are added more value such as neem leaf, kaffir lime, lemongrass and holy

basil. These herbs are dried, finely ground and mixed with some water before being kneaded

and covered around bamboos. They are eco-friendly and free from chemical substances. The

house is also a learning center for interested persons.

Today our trip brings you to experience a pleasant

mangrove forest adjacent to the Chonharnpichit Water

Transmission and Maintenance Project, Irrigation Office No.

11, Department of Royal Irrigation, Ministry of Agriculture

and Cooperatives, Khlong Dan Sub-district, Bang Bo District.

The green area is packed with interesting tourism activities

including nature trails, species of mangrove trees, marine

animals and way of life of fishermen who always head to

the sea for fish every day.

เปนตนแสมด�า ตนโกงกางใบเลก ตนโกงกางใบใหญ ตนล�าพ ตนล�าแพน

ตนโพทะเล และตนจาก โดยตนไมทถอเปนไฮไลตของทนคอตนแสมด�า

ซงมไมต�ากวา 100 ตน และสวนใหญมอายไมต�ากวา 50 ปเลยทเดยว

ดวยความอดมสมบรณของระบบนเวศนเอง ท�าใหมสตวน�านอยใหญ

มาอาศยอยเปนจ�านวนมาก อาท กงขาว, กงผกกาด, ปทะเล, ปเปยว,

ปลากด, ปลาจมพรวด, ปลากระจง, หอยนางรม, หอยแครง, หอยแมลงภ,

นกกวก, นกกระยาง ฯลฯ ซงโผลมาใหเหนเปนระยะ สรางความตนเตน

ใหพวกเราตลอดเสนทางเดนศกษาธรรมชาต

Upon arriving the Chonharnpichit Water Transmission and Main-

tenance Project, the very first picture that we see is the structure

of the pumping station and the large door pane in the center of

the Khlong Dan stream. Formerly, the pumping station was used

to store water in rainy season in order to ensure sufficiency for

residents’ farming. The door pane prevents seawater from entering

into the area, so one side of the canal is freshwater source that

local residents use for their tilapia farming in floating baskets,

whereas another side is seawater abundant with mangrove trees

and marine animals.

While walking into the mangrove forest next to the pumping

station, there are plenty of mangrove trees spreading all over the area

beside the canal such as Avicennia officinalis, Rhizophora apiculata,

Rhizophora mucronata, Mangrove apple, Sonneratia ovata, Portia

Tree and Nipa palm. The forest’s highlight is Avicennia officinalis

which has more than 100 trees, mostly aged over 50 years old.

With abundance of the ecosystem, there are lots of different

animals such as Whiteleg shrimp, Pakkad shrimp, Mangrove crab,

Fiddler crab, Naked catfish, Blue-spotted mudskipper, Giant mud-

skipper, oyster, Blood cockle, Asian green mussel, White-breasted

Waterhen and Heron occasionally appearing and bringing us ex-

citement along the nature trails.

นอกจากปาชายเลนแลวทนยงมล�าคลองสายเลกสายนอยเปน

จ�านวนมาก ชาวบานทอาศยอยโดยรอบล�าคลองจงมอาชพท�าประมง

เปนสวนใหญ ซงในชวงเชาและเยนกน�าเรอหางยาวออกหาป ปลา กง

และหอย กลายเปนวถชวตทสมพนธกบสายน�าตงแตอดตจนถงปจจบน

ดงนนภาพวถชวตของชาวบานจงเปนอกหนงไฮไลตทไมควรพลาด

มาชม ซงทกวนชาวบานจะออกเรอหาปลาตามจดตางๆ รอบสถาน

สบน�าฯ ใหเหนเปนประจ�า บางออกเรอหางยาวจบปลา บางเดนแคะ

สายนำา..สรางชวตStream of Life

Apart from the mangrove forest, there are lots of small

branch canals where most local residents live their lives by

doing fishery. They usually go fishing in long-tailed boats in the

morning and evening to catch crabs, fish, shrimps and shells.

Obviously, their way of life has been long bound by the stream.

Hence the picture of local residents’ way of life is another

highlight that you can’t miss while visiting here. Every day we

can see the residents going fishing around the pumping station,

either using long-tailed boats, walking along every corner of

stone to find oysters, sitting with fishing rods in their hands

on the river bank or going into the river to catch river prawns.

These are nice pictures that put a pleasant smile on our faces.

ประมง ซงจะออกทกวนเปนประจ�า คอชวงเชากบชวงเยน สวนปลาทไดก

ซมซบภาพวถชวต การใชชวต และบานเรอนของชาวบานทมรปทรงแปลกตา

พอเดนไปสกพกกพบกบกลมเดกๆ ก�าลงวงเลนบนสะพานไมอยางสนกสนาน

พวกเราจงขอถายภาพกบนองๆ เปนทระลกกอนกลบไวเตอนความทรงจ�า วา

ครงหนงไดเขามาเกบภาพความประทบใจ ณ หมบานชาวประมงของพวกเขา

After exploring around the pumping station, our local tour

guide Ratree tells that there is another interesting spot called

“Fisherman Village” located in the mangrove forest. That makes

us eager to see the way of life and local residency. So we actively

start off for the village.

The Fisherman Village consists of 10 houses. To reach the

village, we have to cross an over 500-meter wooden bridge built

amid the dense Avicennia officinalis forest, but a long walk is not a

problem because the nice, cool wind makes us feel very comfortable.

Upon arrival, we meet Uncle Somchet, a villager actively sorting

out his fish.

After talking, Uncle Somchet tells that he just caught

these fish after going fishing every day in the morning and

evening. There are different kinds of fish depending on seasons

such as Dusky-hairfin anchovy, Bigeye trevally, Akysis macronemus,

Mackerel and threadfin. The quantity of fish caught every day

is different.

After that we stroll along the village to see the local way of

life and distinctive residency of these fishermen. We also see a

group of children running and playing on the bridge and we take

some photos of them as keepsakes to remind us that we once

visit and feel impressed with the nice Fisherman Village.

ขณะนนเวลาประมาณ 7 โมงเชา เมฆฝนเรมตงเคา และตกปรอยๆ

เปนเวลาเดยวกบทแกงนกปนไดเขามายงจดนดหมาย ผานวงเวยนอนสาวรย

รชกาลท 5 และปนเลยบแมน�า มลมเยนๆ เขาปะทะออนๆ กอนจอดรวมตว

กนรมเขอน ฝงตรงขามพระสมทรเจดย เปนชวงเวลาเดยวกบทนกนางนวล

ก�าลงบนโฉบไปมาเพอหาอาหารในตอนเชา บรรดานกปนไมพลาดโอกาส

น�าขนมปงทกนรองทองมาแบงและโยนใหนกกนกนอยางสนกสนาน

หลงจากรวมตวกนไดสกระยะกเรมปนออกจากบรเวณศาลากลางฯ

ไปตามถนนสขมวท ผานหนาโรงเรยนนายเรอ หลงจากนนเลยวซายเขาซอย

วดบางดวนใน (สขกร) ซงจะอยตรงขามกบพพธภณฑชางเอราวณ

ถงแมฝนทตกลงมากอนหนานจะท�าใหถนนเปยกบางแตกไมเปนอปสรรค

ผานเขามาได 300 เมตร จงแวะทวดบางดวนใน (สขกร) ไหวพระท�าบญ

เอาฤกษเอาชย ใหฟาฝนเปนใจกนกอน หลงจากนนปนไปทางดานหลงวด

เพอนงพกบนศาลาทตดกบล�าคลองเลกๆ กอนออกจากวด

It was approximately 7.00 a.m., raincloud was forming and it

started to drizzle when the biking group gathered at the meeting point.

They passed the circle where the statue of King Rama V stands and

continued riding by the river side where soft cool breeze blew in.

They stopped to form a group riding at the embankment opposite

the Phra Samut Chedi Pagoda. It was the same time that seagulls

hovering around to find their breakfast. Cyclists joyfully shared their

bread with the birds of prey.

After stop for group gathering for a while, they started the ride

from the Town Hall heading for Sukhumvit Road passing Royal Naval

Academy then turned left into Soi Wat Bang Duan Nai (Sukkorn)

opposite the Erawan Museum.

Though the road was somehow wet by the rain that fell earlier, it

was not an obstacle for the bikers. About 300 m. into the Soi, they

made the first stop at Wat Bang Duan Nai to pay homage to Buddha

images and make merit pleading that there would be no more rain.

Then, they rode to the back of the temple for a rest in the pavilion

by the canal before heading out of the temple premise.

of Samut Prakan city i.e. the embankment in front of the Town

Hall and riding through the small side roads before crossing the

Chao Phraya River to Bang Krachao.

แมจะเปนเสนทางในเมอง

แตบรรยากาศรมรนไปดวยตนไมนอยใหญThough it is a city trail, the atmosphere is so

pleasant with big and small trees

ปนเขาไปในซอยเพยงอดใจเดยวกผานโคงตรงวดบางดวนนอก

ทไมมรถวงสวนไปมามากนก จะมเพยงรถมอเตอรไซคคนเลกๆ

เทานน ท�าใหการปนในเมองไมนากลวอยางทหลายคนกงวลใจ

แถมตรงบรเวณนกไมเหมอนความเปนเมองอนๆ แมจะอยตรงถนน

สขมวทแตในซอยกลบมความสงบ แถมมตนไมขนแทรกตามบานเรอน

ไมขาดสาย ปนไปตามทางจนถงทางแยก และเลยวซายสงเกตไดจาก

ปายทบอกวาไปวดบางโปรง เสนทางตรงนรถยนตไมสามารถ

ผานไปได จะเปนทางแคบๆ ผานชมชนในบรเวณนน โดยมสะพานปน

ขามตรงคลองบางโปรงเปนอกจดทมความสวยงาม หลงจาก

ตรงออกจากวดไปทางซอยบางโปรง 18 ไปเขาซอย 16 และซอย

วดบางฝาย ทเปนเสนตรงสามารถทะลถงกนไดไมยาก กไปบรรจบกน

ทวดบางฝาย ทอยตดกบโรงไฟฟาพระนครใต แวะพกกนตรงดานหลง

วดทจะมโปะเรอไวคอยรบสงชาวบาน เพอขามแมน�าเจาพระยา

ถอเปนจดพกรมแมน�าทสวยงามอกแหงหนง

ผานมาหลายชวโมง รางกายเรมสงสญญาณตองการพลงงาน

เพอสะสมก�าลงกนแลว จดตอไปเปนรานกวยเตยวเลกๆ หนา

วดบางหวเสอ ทใชบรเวณบานเปดเปนราน ใครผานไปมาตองไมพลาด

กดวยเพราะความอรอยทส�าคญราคากไมแพง แถมมขนมหวานปดทาย

ความอรอยใหเลอกกนหลายอยาง รวมกวยเตยว 1 ชาม ขนมหวาน

1 ถวย ทงน�าแขงไส ลอดชอง หรอจะเปนสลม รวมชดละ 25 บาท

หลงจากอมกนแลวกเรมปนเขาไปยงวดบางหวเสอ เดนซอของท

ตลาดน�าไวกนระหวางทางกนอกสกนด

เราปนออกจากวดและเลยวเขาซอยหมบานสยามพฒนา ไปทะล

ซอยเทศบาลส�าโรงใต 21 เพอไปออกตรงถนนปเจาสมงพราย

กอนเลยวเขาซอยส�าโรงใต 23 มงหนาไปยงศาลปเจาสมงพราย

ซงบรเวณนเปนปอมเกาตงแตสมยรชกาลท 2 ซงยงคงมปนใหญ

หลงเหลอใหไดชมกนอย และไดแวะไหวขอพรบรเวณศาลปเจาสมงพราย

กอนเดนทางไปบางกะเจาจดหมายตอไป

With a short riding, they arrived at the bend in front of

Wat Bang Duan Nok where traffic is very light with only few

small motorcycles. Therefore, riding in Samut Prakan city

center is not as frightening as some cyclists may worry.

Moreover, this area on Sukhumvit Road is not similar to

other city centers because inside the Soi is very peaceful

with trees grown plentifully between houses. Upon arriving

at the junction, cyclists should look for the signage for Wat

Bang Prong and turn left. Car is not allowed on this path

as it is very narrow snaking through the communities in the

area. The concrete bridge over Bang Prong Canal is another

point with nice view. After leaving the monastery heading for

Soi Bang Prong 18 cutting to Soi 16 and Soi Wat Bang Fai

which is another connected straight path then we arrived at

Wat Bang Fai which is adjacent to the South Bangkok Power

Plant, we made a stop behind the temple where there is a

ferry pier for villagers to cross the Chao Phraya River and it

is another stop by the river with a nice view.

After riding for couple of hours, our bodies needed refueling.

Our next stop was at a small noodle shop in front of Wat

Bang Huasuea. It is actually a part of a house that turned

into noodle shop where passing people should not miss

because the taste is very good and the price is reasonable.

Moreover, refreshing desserts to complement the meal are

also available be it shaved ice with condiments, Lodchong

(rice noodles in sweet coconut syrup )or Salim Zfine angel

hair noodles in light coconut syrup). A set of 1 noodle

and 1 dessert is only 25 Baht. After filling up the energy,

we continued cycling to Wat Bang Huasuea and did some

shopping to stock our provisions at the floating market.

Then we left the temple and turned into Soi Moobaan

Siam Pattana that is connected with Soi Tesaban Samrong Tai

21 to get to Pu Chao Saming Phrai Road before turning left

into Soi Samrong Tai 23 heading for Pu Chao Saming Phrai

Shrine. The shrine is actually situated on the compound that

used to be a fort in the reign of King Rama II which ancient

cannons were left on the premise. After paying respect at

the shrine, we headed for Bang Krachao.

หลงออกมาจากซอยและมงหนาไปยงแพยนต เพอขามฟากไปยง

ฝงพระประแดง ทในทกๆ วนจะมผคนใชบรการอยางหนาแนนไมแพ

ถนนสายหลกเลยทเดยว การนงแพยนตยงไดชมววกลางแมน�า

และทส�าคญไดชมสะพานภมพล 2 ในอกมมทไมคอยไดเหนมากนก

แพยนตไดเทยบฝงตรงบรเวณหนาสถานต�ารวจพระประแดง

มชาวบานตางขบรถมาคอยสบเปลยนเพอจะขามไปอกฝงจ�านวน

มาก เราปนไปตามถนนศรเขอนขนธ ไปยงสวนสขภาพลดโพธ ท

อยบรเวณใตวงแหวนอตสาหกรรม จดแจงลางหนา ลางตา บางคน

เปลยนเสอทชมไปดวยเหงอ และรวมตวกบเพอนๆ ทรออยใน

บรเวณนน เพอจะไดสมผสกบความเยนของอากาศทปกคลมไปดวย

ธรรมชาตอนสมบรณ มตนไมนอยใหญขนอยหนาแนน

ขามคลองลดโพธ และเลยวเขาซอยเพชรหงษ 25 ตรงเขาไปยง

วดบางกะเจานอก เพอเขาเสนทางปนเลกๆ ทมความกวางเพยง 1

เมตร ชมธรรมชาตสวนรมแมน�าทมบานเรอนอยเปนระยะ บรเวณน

ถกปกคลมไปดวยตนไมมากมายทขนมาไมต�ากวา 10 ป ไมวาจะเปน

ตนมะพราว ตนมะมวง ไมดอก ไมประดบ หรอพรรณไมหายากก

สามารถพบเหนไดทวไป ซงเปนพนททมอากาศอนบรสทธแหงหนง

ของประเทศ หลงจากไดเรมปนเขาไปสามารถรบรไดถงอณหภมท

ต�าลง ผสมกบฝนเพงหยดตก ความเยนท�าใหรสกสดชนอาการ

เหนอยลาหายไปอยางรวดเรว

Riding out of the Soi, we headed for the ferry pier for

crossing to Phra Pradaeng side. Everyday a huge number of

people commute by this facility no less than those using the

main road. Commuting on car ferry provides the commuters

with the opportunity to enjoy the river view and the Bhumibol

2 Bridge in the different angle.

When the car ferry came ashore at the pier in front of Phra

Pradaeng Police Station, many people drove their cars for an

embarkation to the other side of the river. After disembarkation,

we rode along Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Road to Lat Pho Park

which is under the Industrial Ring Road. Here, we refreshed

ourselves by washing our faces and some might change their

sweat-soaked T-shirts before gathering with friends waiting in

the area for a rest to enjoy cool fresh air and fertile nature with

dense trees and shrubs.

Crossing Lat Pho Canal and then turned left into Soi Petch

Heung 25 heading for Wat Bang Krachao Nok for a ride on 1

meter wide concrete path to enjoy the natural beauty of orchards

by the river where houses are scattered. The area has plenty of

plants that are over 10 years old be it coconut, mango, flowering

plants or rare and endangered plants. It is considered as one

of the areas with the high degree of ozone in the country. After

we started cycling into the area plus it was after the rain, we

could feel that the temperature was getting lower. The coolness

made us feel refreshed and quickly rid off our tiredness.

เสนทางนชาวบานจะใชรถมอเตอรไซคเปนพาหนะในการเดนทาง บางคนใช

จกรยานเปนประจ�า ปนเขามาได 300 เมตร ไปแวะถายรปกนทศาลารมน�า กอน

ตรงเขาไปแทบจะไมเหนทองฟา เพราะตนไมปกคลมเปนเหมอนอโมงคทคอยให

ความรมเยนตลอดทาง แถมอากาศกไมรอนอบอาว เหมอนปนจกรยานอยในปาใหญ

แตละบานจะมสวนพชผก หรอผลไมของตวเอง เสนทางมตรอกซอกซอย แยกซาย

แยกขวามากมาย คลายซอยทวไป จะตางเพยงรถมอเตอรไซคและจกรยานท

ไดรบอนญาตผานเขาไปไดบนทางปนเลกๆ ททอดยาวผานสวนปารมน�ากวา 2

กโลเมตร กอนไปออกบรเวณซอยราษฎรรงสรรค 16 เลยวขวาและปนตรงไปผาน

พพธภณฑปลากด ซงเปนจดแวะพกจกรยานอกแหงหนง มทงเครองดมและปลา

กดหลายสายพนธใหเดนชมกน หลงจากนนเขาซอยเรวดไปออกถนนเพชรหงษ

และไปเขาซอยเพชรหงษ 52 กอนจะไปออกตรงวดบางน�าผงนอก ระหวางทาง

มชาวบานขายขาวเหนยวมนและมะมวงน�าดอกไม ดวยความนากนจงจอดแวะ

อดหนนและรบประทานกนแบบสดๆ ใหไดรบรสของความอรอยขางสวนกนทเดยว

Villagers use motorcycles for travelling on this path and some use

bicycles. After riding into the Soi for about 300 m. we made a stop for

photo taking at the pavilion by the waterfront before heading deep inside

where we could hardly see the sky as the trees are growing densely as

if we were riding in a shaded tunnel all the way. It seemed like riding in

a forest. Each house has their own vegetable patches and fruit bearing

trees. Along the way there are numerous side roads on the left and

on the right. It looks like ordinary small side roads elsewhere but only

permitted motorcycles or bicycles can pass through the narrow concrete

path snaking about 2 km. by the river. Before arriving at the exit to Soi

Ratrangsan 16, we took the right turn and went straight passing the

Fighting Fish Museum, another stop where cyclists can stop for a rest

and for some drinks plus admiring fighting fish of various breeds. After

this stop, we headed for Soi Reawadee passing on to Petch Heung Road

and on to Soi Petch Heung 52 before arriving at Wat Bang Nampheung

Nok. Along the way, we could see villagers selling sticky rice with Nam

Dokmai sweet mango. It looked so delectable that we could not help

making a stop to buy and eat the fresh and delicious sticky rice and sweet

mango right at the orchard.

If tourists come to Bang Khachao by cycling,

they can take a boat crossing from Bangkok’s side

to green areas through many routes, for example,

from Non-si Pier to Bang Krachao Nok Temple Pier,

from Khlong Toei Pier to Khamnan Khao Pier or Bang

Krachao Pier, from Bang Na Nok Temple Pier to

Bang Nampheung Nok Temple Pier or Ta Luean Pier.

As for cycling and touring in Bang Khachao, it

is recommended to visit the place on weekends, as

shops, restaurants, resting points and Bang Nam-

pheung market are opened on weekends. Tourists

can stop by these places during their trips. However,

if you are a cyclist who focus on cycling only, any

day is fine for your trip.

When riding into the compound of Wat Bang Nampheung Nok, we made

another stop at the waterfront pavilion before continue riding to the natural

waterfront area at the back of the temple. Home stays are lining the area

and the outstanding one is the Bang Nampheung Home Stay which is the

original home stay by Bang Nampheung Community that opens to welcome

visitors every day. Cycling on narrow concrete path is the highlight of the trip

apart from the natural ambience and the traditional houses along the way.

During weekends, visitors are in great number because they can ride on the

500 m. long enchanting green riding path by the canal to Bang Nampheung

Floating Market.

Then, we headed into Soi Bua Pheung Pattana 2 (Ying Amnuay) where

cars can pass but very little in number. Therefore, it is another area suitable

for an easy riding to enjoy the atmosphere. After riding for awhile, we came to

the junction at Soi Petch Heung 22 before taking a turn into a narrow concrete

path that shortcut through villagers’ orchard to Soi Petch Heung 20 where we

took the left turn at the Bang Krasob Sub-district Administrative Organization

and made a stop at the Cork Tree Forest Park which is the conservation

area for cork tree, a native plant of the area. There are many other breeds of

mangrove tree in fresh water swamp ecological system and fertile mangrove

ecological system that create many “firefly villages”. Additionally, the area is

also rich with insects of rare breeds such as horn beetles, red cotton bugs,

Scutelleridae, Chlorizeina feae Kevin, Danainae.

จากนนกเขาซอยบวผงพฒนา 2 (ยงอ�านวย) ถงแมรถยนตจะสามารถขบผานไป

ไดแตกมไมมากนก จงเหมาะกบการปนเลน ชมธรรมชาตอยางแทจรง ปนไปสกระยะ

กบรรจบกบซอยเพชรหงษ 22 กอนเลยวเขาทางปนเพอลดสวนของชาวบาน

ไปออกซอยเพชรหงษ 20 แลวเลยวซายตรงบรเวณ อบต.บางกระสอบ แวะพก

ทสวนปาล�าพ ซงเปนพนทอนรกษไมล�าพ เปนไมพนถนในพนท นอกจากนยง

มล�าแพน โกงกาง และพนธไมหลากหลายชนดทอยในระบบนเวศปาบงน�าจด

อยางชาๆ เหมอนเปนตนทางน�าของคลองนตอจากแมน�าเจาพระยา

อดใจเดยวกเขาไปยงสถานเพาะช�ากลาไม ทเปนแหลงเรยนร ใหกบ

ชาวบานและเยาวชน อยบรเวณสวนเฉลมพระเกยรต 80 พรรษา พระบาท

สมเดจพระเจาอยหว บรเวณภายในมความรมรน โดยเฉพาะเสนทางปาสน

ทมความสวยงามไมแพบรเวณอน หลงจากปนรอบสวนเฉลมพระเกยรตฯ

และนงชมธรรมชาตกนเปนทสดทาย กอนออกไปยงถนนเพชรหงษ ถอเปน

จดสนสดของการปนจกรยานทรปน ตลอดระยะทางประมาณ 60 กโลเมตร

เฉพาะพนทในบางกะเจา เราไดปนเปนแบบวงกลมรอบเกาะผานทง 6 ต�าบล

เปนเสนทางธรรมชาตอนเงยบสงบทไมคอยมใครรจกมากนก เปนเสน

ทางทผานชมชนและรองสวนของชาวบานทยงคงด�าเนนวถชวตเหมอน

อยางนเชนเคย การปนจกรยานตงแตใจกลางเมองปากน�า จนขาม

แพยนตถอเปนเอกลกษณของเมองพระประแดง กอนปนคลอเคลย

กบชมชนและธรรมชาตคงเปนทประทบใจส�าหรบนกปนไมนอย

After taking a rest for while we continued to ride straight

ahead, around the bend there is a small concrete side road

lined with nipa palm trees. It is very peaceful and shady. At

some point, we could hear the native birds of various breeds

chirping. We continued on to Soi Petch Heung 18 and to Wat

Bang Krasob visiting the chapel of Phra Buddha Rattana Bhoka

which aged over hundred years before riding to the back of

the temple which is not a concrete path but just paved earth

surface with wooden bridge over the small canal where the

water flows lazily. It looks as if it is the mouth of this canal

connecting with the river.

For a short instant, we arrived at the seedling cultivation

station which is the learning center for villagers and youths

in the community. The seedling cultivation station is situated

within the park to commemorate H.M. the King’s 80th Birthday

Anniversary. The area is very shady particularly the trail in

the pine forest. After riding around the park and a stop to

admire the beauty of Mother Nature, we rode on to Petch

Heung Road which was the finishing line for this cycling trip.

Along the approximately 60 km. distance, we rode in a circle

around the islet passing 6 sub-districts on the serene natural

trail that very few people know about. The biking trail passes

the native communities and orchard ditches where villagers’

way of life has been the same for generations. The ride from

Samut Prakan city center, over the car ferry crossing the Chao

Phraya River which is an identity of Phra Pradaeng District

before riding along among communities and the enchanting

nature is quite impressive for the cyclists.

Upon arriving at this biking track, the first thing that all

cyclists must do is to present their ID card for Thai nationals

or passports for foreigners. This measure is a safety

measure of the airport to certify the users of the facilities.

Afterwards, it is the time to enjoy 23.5 km. cycling along

the one-way trail around the airport. It will take up over

an hour for a round of cycling.

After checking for the readiness, we could start right

away. Along the way, scenery varies as in the first half,

we will ride passing airport’s edifices while on the second

half is full with natural surrounding be it ponds, coconut

trees lining the track and the vast green field with the close

views of airplanes landing and taking off.

Should the cyclists get weary, they can stop at

various rest areas along the way. Or, should they feel

too tired that they could not go further, by calling the

telephone number for assistance provided along the

way the airport rescue team will bring the pickup truck

to pick them up at the point. Thumb up for such a

good service.

After resting and quenching the thirst off, it’s time

to ride off. Along the riding trail, signage marking the

remaining kilometers could help make cyclists elated

as the finishing line is within reach in a few minutes.

Looking at other cyclists, they are energetically riding

at full speed with big smiles on their faces as if here

is rightfully their heaven.

Apart from the adventurous riding trail, the airport also

provides a shorter trail for family or children groups. This

trail is only 800 m. long and is suitable for those cyclists who

do not like much exertion or have limited time. They can

enjoy riding their bikes while observing landing and taking

off airplanes and the surrounding beautiful scenery at the

Suvarnabhumi Airport as well.

The pier at Wat Namdaeng is the starting point of

the trail before riding onto Teparak Road going to the

path along the Soi Mangkorn Khandee 9 before joining

at the bridge by the canal at the end of Soi Mongkorn

Khandee 17 passing through Soi Sangthong. Along the

many kilometers of the aforementioned biking route, the

trail follows various small canals which make the riding

serene and enjoyable. Additionally, cyclists will be able

to observe the simple way of life of people living deep

We never know that somewhere deep into the side road or

Soi on Teparak Road, where during rush hours is congested

with traffic, there will be a peaceful and interesting biking

trail as there are many small criss-crossing canals like

spider web with many kilometers of small concrete road

connecting the area by the canals.

in the Soi before arriving at the House of Lanterns, our

destination, where we can take a rest and enjoy admiring

over 1,000 lanterns that the owner has been collecting

for decades. He is willing to serve as our guide providing

information on his collection.

After taking a rest for awhile, we continue on our riding

on Samut Prakan provincial road No. 3034 to the path by

the canal behind Ing-lada housing estate. Riding along we

will pass Suvarnabhumi Technology College before reaching

Bang Phli-Tamru Road, then we cross the road to another

path by the canal close to Vararom 1 housing estate and

continue riding on to the bridge by Bua Khli Canal before

crossing the road to Wat Bang Phli Yai. Should cyclists

take this route during weekend, they can make a stop

to visit Bnag Phli Ancient Market or to pay homage to

Buddha images in the nearby vicinity. Then, we ride on

passing Wat Pang Phli Klang going to Namdaeng-Bang

Phli Road, passing Khoom Bang Kaew Resort then arrive

at the entrance behind Wat Namdaeng, the finishing line of

the bicycle trip. Total distance for biking along the canals

is approximately 35 km.

แกตวเอง “ผมมาปนจกรยานทนเปนประจ�า ประมาณบายสามโมง

กเปนชวงเวลาทเหมาะ ผมวาทนมความปลอดภยสง ไมมรถยนตให

ตองระแวง เดนทางมาสะดวกและยงมววสวยๆ ใหไดชมดวย” นกปน

กอนจะขอตวไปปนจกรยานตอนน เขาไดเลาทงทายใหฟงวา

การปนจกรยานนน ไมเพยงสรางสขภาพทดเทานน แตยงชวยกระชบ

ความสมพนธทดในหมเพอน ขณะเดยวกนเขายงไดพบมตรภาพ

ใหมๆ ทมหวใจรกการปนเชนกนดวย สนสดการสนทนาและร�าลากน

เรามองเขาปนจกรยานไปจนสดตา นกในใจอยากลองปนจกรยานดบาง

Somebody said that cycling would help us to realize

the energy of self-reliance on calf force. That is why many

cyclists have been intrigued in cycling enough to use it as

a mean to travel around the world. There would be a wide

range of reasons why cycling is very intriguing. However,

for Fu – Worapot Channongsuang, our new friend that we

met at the Green Cycle Track at Suvarnabhumi Airport, his

reason is quite interesting to know.

Fu is a middle-age man who has started cycling for a

while. We accidentally met him at the famous cycle track at

Suvarnabhumi Airport where many cyclists come. Absolutely,

our friendly conversation is mostly about cycling. Fu lives in

Bangkok so cycling in the metropolis is not appropriate for a

beginner like him. That is why he chooses to ride a bike here.

“I have started cycling for approximately 4-5 months

by focusing on exercising for getting sweats. After a while,

I have gradually increased my statistics from 40 kilometers

to 50 kilometers. Currently, I am at 50 kilometers.”

Fu told us in relax while his hands still held his favorite

bike closely.

As he is a beginner who is inexperienced, the cycle

track at Suvarnabhumi Airport is pinned for proving his calf

muscle’s strength in order to be healthy. “I regularly com

here at approximately 3PM which is proper. I think here is

very safe as I do not have to worry about cars. It is also

convenient and scenic.” He told us happily.

Before leaving us to continue cycling, he ended that

cycling is not only a mean to create good health; but also

a nice way to build up good friendships. In addition, people

can make new friends who also love cycling. We eventually

concluded our conversation and said good bye to each

other. We watched him gradually ride far away from us and

suddenly attempted to try cycling sometimes.

โดยเรมจากนายสรพงศ รวยดเลศ ผชนชอบการปน

จกรยานออกก�าลงกายเชงทองเทยว จนสามารถรกษา

อาการเจบปวยของหวเขาทงสองขาง ทแทบจะไมสามารถ

เดนไดจนหายเปนปกต สวนเสนทางการปนกอยในละแวก

พนทของต�าบลบางแกว หลงจากนนจงไดเกดการรวมกลม

กบเพอนๆ ทสนใจการปนจกรยานเชนเดยวกน โดยน�า

ชอของต�าบลบางแกว จงหวดสมทรปราการ มาตงเปน

ชอกลมจกรยานวา “บางแกวไบค” เรมแรกมสมาชก

ประมาณ 10 คน จนปจจบนมมากถง 70 คน สวนใหญ

สมาชกจะเปนกลมผรกในการปนจกรยานออกก�าลงกาย

แบบครอบครว ทอยในจงหวดสมทรปราการ, กรงเทพฯ

และจงหวดใกลเคยง

In Samut Prakan, there are many biking groups

and each has its own objectives. Some take on biking

to fulfill their adventurous spree while some go biking

to strengthen family ties. The objective of the founder

Bangkaew Bike Group is originally to relief knee pain

that he could hardly walk before transforming into

the bike group for health and leisure.

Mr. Worawut Worawittayanon, group leader aka

Brother Wut as called by followers in the group,

recalled the very interesting origin of Bangkaew

Bike Group that the group was formed on June 11,

2554 B.E. (2011 A.D.) by Mr. Siripong Ruaydeelert

who was very much fond of cycling for leisure that

he could heal the pain in both knees which were so

painful that he could hardly walk. His biking route

was within the vicinity of Bangkaew Sub-district.

Later on a group of friends interested in cycling was

formed and the name ‘Bangkaew Bike Group’ derived

from the name of Bnagkaew Sub-district in Samut

Prakan. Originally, there were about 10 members and

the number increased until presently there are about

70 cyclists in the group. Most of them are families

residing in Samut Prakan and nearby who are also

fond of biking for health.

Each cycling program is very interesting

and diverse. “Normally, we make appoint-

ment to bike in small group almost every

week. There are many members who bike

everyday for exercise. The biking trip activity

will be arranged on 1-2 month interval such

as biking trip on 10 canals, trip to Suvar-

nabhumi (follow the trail by the canals),

trip to make merit applying gold leaves on

Buddha images, etc. The long distant biking

will be for small group such as a trip from

Bangkaew Sub-district to Klongsuan Market,

trip to Bangpakong, trip to Cholburi, trip to

Tian Talay and the distance will vary from

70-100 km. However, most of our regular

activity will be within 30-50 km. which is

suitable for family biking.” Brother Wut

elaborated on the group’s activities.

The leader of Bangkaew Bike Group

further revealed that the impressive trips are

within Samut Prakan that Bangkaew Bike

Group organized for many times because the

diversity of the biking trails in the province.

His most impressive trip is the trail on con-

crete path following the various canals in the

area that are endlessly connected making

biking very interesting. Moreover, it provides

opportunity to learn the Paknam way of life

in each community. There are also activities

and places of interest that cyclists can visit

along the way that they could not find in

the ordinary road trip by car. And lastly,

“The charm of biking in Samut Prakan

differs from in other provinces because each

area here has its own charms and interests.

For example, Samut Prakan is known for its

numerous industrial factories but in various

areas there are still interesting native way of

life, monasteries and many other interesting

attractions where bikers can enjoy while

biking in group particularly the trails within

communities and those following the canals

which are just a short distance from the main

road. It is unbelievable that we can find such

a serenity and simplicity by cycling a few

meters from Sukhumvit Road into a small

side road where we will find community in

mangrove forest hidden amidst the peaceful

and pleasant surroundings.” Brother Wut

said joyfully.

He said in conclusion that Samut Prakan

is a coastal province with numerous canals

that receive water from the upper north before

discharging into the open sea. The people

of Samut Prakan have their own community

way of life and culture. Besides, there are

many tourist attractions that can be easily

reached by bicycles where Bangkaew Bike

With the Real Local Mind

A boy who has had passion on cycling

told us that he was a cyclist guide 2 years

ago but at that time there were not a lot

of visitors like today. Now as there are so

many visitors, he has been back to work

by himself by preparing some brochures

and flyers to leave with some homestays

and bike rental shops to seek for any

interested visitors. His customers are

mostly foreigners.

“I love nature and cycling since I was

a kid. I am familiar with all routes and

appreciate how interesting they are. OI

always wanted to help when I saw some

foreigners lost the way so that I wanted

to bring my expertise to help them to

explore several places, in particular small

concrete lanes along the villagers’ farm

which are very rustic. These routes are

always foreigners’ favorite choice as they

are tranquil and can help the foreigners

to get away from the noisy and crowded

urban. Each cycling trip usually takes 3-4

hours. The foreigners love to stop by at the

ancient church of Wat Bang Nam Phueng

Nok. My job is to tell them the history and

some interesting tips about the place via

my American friend who is my interpreter.

“Many times that I saw many groups of foreigners who enjoyed cycling in Bang Ka Chao lost the way even thought they had a

navigating map on hand. Also, many times that they wanted to appreciate the natural routes which were hidden inside many unknown lanes and

drives.” This is the intention of Pond – Kwan Malithong, a local boy in Bang Kor Bua Sub-district, who is familiar with all routes in Bang Ka Chao as

he has started cycling since childhood.

since I was a kid.


My friend has lived in Bang Kachao for

over 10 years. I usually ride along small

vegetable patches and sometimes I may go

farer in to Si Nakhon Khearn Khan garden

to feed fish and to take some photographs,

or to just stop by at the river gazebo to

appreciate the view of skyscrapers located

in the town across the river. The foreigners

usually think it is quite amazing that there

is a big city across to the green area where

we actually are.”

Apart from cycling, there is cruising

available as an option to appreciate the

nature of Bang KaChao from Bhumibol 1

Bridge to Bhumibol 2 Bridge. There are 2

sizes of boat, small and large one. However,

to explore around Bang Ka Chao, foreigners

always pick no-roof small boat “they said

it was unique and looked fun even though

there was a little bit of sunshine. Importantly,

they were so excited and amazed to see

the absolute difference of both sides,

between nature look and urban look with

skyscrapers”

For some groups, after cycling in Bang

Kachao, they hire a boat to cruise along

the Chao Phraya River. They may stop

along the way to buy stuff at Asiatique

the Riverfront, and then head to the Grand

Palace to explore the center of Bangkok

further. This route uses large boats which

can load approximately 20-30 passengers.

Ban Charn Suan Steakhouse Family meal always yummy

Bang Prong Sub-district is a lowland plain formed

by the Chao Phraya River and it has some alluvial soils

constituted by the river flowing from the upper part of

the country to the Gulf of Thailand, so the soil is rich in

minerals. In the old days local residents usually grew

coconut trees and various kinds of vegetables, but since

urban society has been expanding, the traditional way

of life is gradually disappearing and many local residents

go to offices. However, there is still some green land left

in the community. Impressed with the charm of the area,

Khun Paweethipha Ae Sawangchaeng decided to open

a restaurant named ‘Ban Charn Suan Steakhouse’ which

welcomes everyone to enjoy dining in a family-like

atmosphere.


‘Ban Charn Suan Steakhouse’, a small two-year-old restaurant,

is a fruit of labor of Khun Paweethipha Ae Sawangchaeng who

dreams of owning a restaurant. She decided to quit her office work

and started up the business. The reason she focused on steak

menus is that the making is easy and takes less time than Thai

dishes and there is still no steakhouse in the neighborhood. First,

she went to a cooking school and developed the formula to meet

Thai customers’ taste. This is s small business that all family

members can do her a favor.

“I like eating tasty food and want to cook tasty dishes for my

family, friends and other persons. Initially, I planned to start it in

Theparak, but my mother suggested that it would be better to

start at our house because it has good atmosphere and not

many restaurants available. We have no rental cost, our menus

are not expensive. We named the restaurant Ban Charn Suan

Steakhouse because in the old days here was a coconut farm

and we treat our customers in a family or friend-like atmosphere”,

the restaurant owner Khun Ae explains about the concept.

The restaurant is designed in loft style which is Khun Ae’s

favorite with two floors. The downstairs is an air-conditioned indoor

zone which is suitable for daytime relaxation, whereas the upstairs

is an outdoor zone for a nice, chill-out dinner. Around 7pm,

customers can view a flock of Lyle’s flying foxes from Pee Seua

Samut Island flying to forage for food at night.

As mentioned above, the concept of Ban Charn Suan

Steakhouse is to serve customers in a family-like atmosphere, so

every menu is attentively cooked and emphasized on quality

materials, good taste and cleanness as well as full quantity. Highlights

include salmon steak, pork steak, chicken steak, baked spinach

with cheese, carbonara, salad and spaghetti as well as local dishes

like stir-fried meat with holy basil, Thai spicy salad, spicy minced

meat salad and hot and spicy soup (Tom yum). The recommended

drink for summer is tamarind soda prepared with a special formula

of the restaurant. It is sour and fizzy, giving refreshment and having

cathartic benefit.

Friendliness and unity of the family members, ranging from

Khun Samut Chin is a small coastal fishing community

adjacent to the Gulf of Thailand, only 36 kilometers

from Bangkok. The way of life the local people is just

simple and interdependent. Although a parcel of land

has been lost to coastal erosion, approximately from

more than 1,000 rai in 1967 to only 70 rai, all residents

learn and live happily with the nature and at the same

time strengthen their community by creating home stays

for tourists who prefer overnight stay amid the nature

and observe the way of life in Khun Samut Chin. Following

the strong cooperation, Khun Samut Chin today becomes

a great eco-tourism attraction that eco enthusiasts

can’t miss.

Wisanu Pho Khengsamut, the coordinator of Ban

Khun Samut Chin Home Stay, tells that he initially has

only one home for students, university students and

researchers who do research and data collection in the

community. Then he called his neighbors to start up

homestay business, but it did not earn much interest

because some people thought that the area is not an

appropriate tourist site. Therefore, he started the business

individually to prove it to his neighbors. After the massive

flooding in 2011 and freshwater entering into the area,

residents who did fishery job were much affected and

some of them started to join the homestay network.

Local residents mutually agreed that every house

should be built with natural materials. It can be noticed

that each house has wooden structure and Nipa palm

roof, which is seen as the nature’s camouflage design. In

case of turning permanent houses into homestays, each

house has different name such as Ban Khlang Wang, Ban

Kong Ta Le, Ban Sam Phi Nong and Ban Nong Joy. All

of them are called ‘Khun Samut Chin Homestay Phuyai

Samon Khengsamut’. Provided by six groups of residents

the homestay consists of 13 houses that can serve up to

100 tourists. Regular tourists are welcomed to choose

their favorite house.

Now over 70% of local residents earn from tourism

business, whereas those who do not own homestay work

as tour guides providing visitors with knowledge on the

community and activities such as paying respect to Chao

Pho Num Noi Loi Chai Shrine, visit to the community

museum, Wat Khun Samuttrawat and planting mangrove

trees. Some of them sell souvenirs and seafood to tourists.

It can be said that all residents associate with one another

to be the good host.

“Although many tourists are interested to visit the

community, we won’t make it our core career because local

residents still have to go fishing and live their traditional

way of life. If one day there are no tourists anymore, they

still can live on their own, not just waiting for tourism

revenue”, Pho says.

Although Ban Khun Samut Chin Community has

inevitably been affected by the coastal erosion, strong

cooperation among the villagers makes it a pleasant

place to live. A portion of revenues obtained from the

homestay will be spent in the community’s development

projects such as establishment of bamboo dams, stone

dams and waste management. It is really the eco-friendly

community.

Naval Museum is a precious special museum in

Pak Nam as it collects, conserves, and exhibits information

regarding the Royal Thai Navy, including naval battle,

important battles in the past, as well as a wide range of

ordnances used for battling, such as HU-16B airplane,

submarine, amphibious vehicle, vintage artilleries, lighthouses,

torpedoes, etc. There was also an exhibition regarding

battle histories and the demonstration of the Royal Barge

Procession of Boats used in significant royal events. These

are really interesting so everyday there are many tourists

and students visit for studying, learning, and entertaining.

Feeling amazed with Huge Ordnances

Just a couple of walks inside the area of this

museum, you will see a wide range of huge ordnances

settled in line on the green field in front of the museum,

including vintage artilleries, PBR ship, amphibious vehicle

(LVT MK4), armored car (V-150), HU-16B airplane, and

submarine. Their sizes are amazingly huge and most of

them passed the battle field in the past.

The highlight here is HU-16B airplane Albatross

which is an amphibious airplane. It can be used both by

land and by water. It is considered the first generation

of airplane at the beginning of the establishment of the

Naval Aviation Department in1962. Consequently, this

airplane seems to be the landmark of this museum that

people passing around love to take some photographs

with.

Paying Respect to Krom Luang Chumphon Khet Udomsak

After being amazed with huge ordnances, it is

now time to walk inside the Building 1 which is the

first building of the museum. There will be the honorary

chamber of Admiral Phra Chao Boromwongther Phra

Ong Chao Arpakorn Kiatiwong Krom Luang Chumphon

Khet Udomsak who was extremely important to the

Royal Thai Navy.

Krom Luang Chumphon Khet Udomsak pleased

to initiate the Royal Thai Navy to be strongly settled

with efficiency, self-reliance, and honor. He made the

Royal Thai Navy prosperous until now. With his greatest

honor and contributions to the Royal Thai Navy and to

the country as a whole, he was honorably named as

“the Father of the Royal Thai Navy”.

When arriving at this room, do not miss taking a

chance to pay respect to Krom Luang Chumphon Khet

Udomsak. Inside, there is an exhibition showing his

biography, his personal arms, his paintings, pharmaceutical

recipes, sea navigating devices, his personal short gun,

twin shotguns, long guns, inlaid silver cane, naval rapier,

sea navigating lamps, etc. There are all his personal

objects which are available for visitors to study about.

Appreciate Preciously Historical Objects

After that, please keep walking to the building 2.

The first floor of the building will exhibit rare historical

items, including “the first lighthouse in Thailand” which

was built in the period of His Majesty the King Rama V,

previously located at the bay area in Samut Prakarn

Province, “Noon Gun” which was used to shot for telling

the noon time in the period of His Majesty the King

Rama IV, and “Suwan Hera Ship” which is a vintage

ship used as the ship alongside of the Royal Barge

Procession which was built by artisans in the reign of

His Majesty the King Rama IV.

In addition, there are several ancient ordnances

exhibited, including torpedoes, antique artillery, bearings

trucks, machine guns, noon guns, mines, and so on.

Being Amazed with the Demonstration of the Royal Barge Procession

Then, on the 2nd floor, there is an exhibition of the

demonstration of the Royal Barge Procession in significant

royal events. These were built by artisans in the reign of His

Majesty the King Rama VI. The Department of Fine Arts

transferred this demonstration to the care of this museum in

order to exhibit to general public to appreciate the gorgeousness

of the Royal Barge Procession.

This barge procession means to support the royal noble

order of the crown in the significant royal events of the royal

visit by water, called “the Royal Barge Procession”. This

procession represents the extreme value of art and culture

of Thailand which have been continuously transferred since

the ancient time.

There are the MUST 4 barges which you should never

miss, including the Royal Barge Suphannahong, the Royal

Barge Anantanakkharat, the Royal Barge Anekkachatphuchong,

and the Royal Barge Narai Song Suban Ratchakan Thi Kao.

These 4 barges have been considered the most important

ones in the royal events.

In addition, there is also the exhibition of the dress code

of the army attending the Royal Barge Procession, such as

clothes of a person giving signal for the barge, clothes of a

person holding the royal umbrellas, and clothes of barge rollers.

This allows the visitors to fully appreciate the gorgeousness

of the barge procession and the dress codes of people at

the same time.

Exhibition…The History of Naval Battle

After appreciating the demonstration of barge procession,

it is now time to enjoy the last room on the 3rd floor. It is the

room for the Royal Thai Navy’s naval battle exhibition. In this

room, everyone will be brought back to the previous time of

significant naval battles in the past, including the amphibious

battle, aircraft and naval aviation battle, the Pacific War, the naval

battle in Koh Chang, the Korean War, the Thai submarines, and

the battle at the mouth of the river in the 112th Year of Rattakosin

Era.

All historical events are exhibited thoroughly, including

pictures, information, background, and demonstration which can

depict the whole things happening at that time. It can be said

that this museum is like a histories classroom of the Royal Thai

Navy.

When mentioning about Pak Nam, people always

first think about fresh seafood. Not so many people

know that there are several delicious places spreading

around in this area, along both main streets and small

drives. Some places are hidden in some small lanes.

This trip was thus a good chance to seek for good

places to eat around Pak Nam area.

As for personal car travelers, driving around to

find good dining places seems inappropriate as Pak Nam

is a crowded community with limited parking spaces.

For convenience, we chose to walk around so we could

find good places for food easily. We suggest starting the

trip at Wat Pichai Songkram and taking this opportunity

to pay respect to Buddha for goodness and to appreciate

several architectures around this place. In addition, this

place also provides car parking service for all.

In accordance with the history, Wat Pichai Songkram

is an ancient temple since the late Ayutthaya Period. It

was originally called Wat Pho or Wat Nok. In the reign

of His Majesty the King Rama II, Phraya Pichai Songkram

built a fort to prevent enemies and renovated this temple.

Later, His Majesty the King Rama II pleased to visit this

temple to present the royal robes to the monks and

named this temple as “Wat Pichai Songkram”. Nowadays,

the market is located in front of the temple and the end

of the market is a pier across to Phra Samut Chedi District.

Departing from Wat Pichai Songkram, we crossed

the street to a market to Narai Prabsuk Road. In this

area, there were many merchants with food carts around.

There were also many good foods worth trying, namely

both Thai Crispy Pancake and Vietnamese Stuffed Crispy

Omelet at Pa A-Yoon Shop. As for Thai Crispy Pancake,

the flour here is crispy and chewy available in both sweet

and salty flavor so people can bite it without being

annoyed of some small broken pieces around. Pa A-Yoon

does not use instant flour instead she makes her own

signature flour. As for Vietnamese Stuffed Crispy Omelet,

we recommend you to keep watching the movement in

placing flour on pan and adding various ingredients into

it, and finishing by wrapping it into square topping with

special tasty sauce. This menu is recommended to buy

it to-go in order to put the omelet into a dish to be eaten

at home.

After trying the pancake and omelet, across there

was a bakery shop called “Rye Bakery”. This place is

especially for bread and cake lovers. There are several

choices of menu. For photo lovers, do not miss a chance

to walk inside to see the outstanding locomotive statue,

a little following with Pak Nam market which is located

along the river. This market is a source of famous seafood,

including prawns, clams, crabs, and fish. Seafood lovers

can choose unlimited choices of seafood here. If you do

not want to hold so many food bags, you can just seek

for your preferred food shops and return to buy later.

A little inside, there is a small lane called Trok Hoi. Here,

there are several good foods, including Fish Boiled Rice,

Crunchy Pork in Clear Soup, and Meat Soup. Walking a little

inside and turning left, there is a very chic restaurant named

Joke (Congee) at Paknam. This place has been open for about

a year. It was compact and vintage. This place opens from

very early morning. Whoever wants to try, please arrive before

10 in the morning if not all food will be finished. In addition,

there are some Dim Sums available as Hors D’Oeuvres as well.

From the congee shop, we walked a little bit more

until reaching Lak Mueng Road. This area has many

delicious food carts. However, we were quite full with

so many main dishes we had. Here, we targeted some

refreshments. There are raw mangoes with sweet and

salty sauce at Pa Nuch’s, including Khai Tuk and Keao

Khamin Mango, which are available for only 40 Baht

per set. What interesting are the yellow Khai Tuk mangoes

which Pa Nuch told us that it was from Chachoengsao

Province. These mangoes are yellow, crunchy, and sweet.

Or, we could cross the street to see Pak Nam Fresh

Fish Noodle Place where the signature dish is Grouper

Noodle in Intense Soup, as well as some cook-to-order

dishes, which are available in reasonable price. This

place is equipped with air-conditioners in both 2 floors

so you can take your time here comfortably without

being afraid of being too hot.

After tasting the noodle, we walked until the end

of the road to see the Shrine of the City God. Here,

there is a famous fried banana shop which is always

crowded so the sellers almost never stop frying pan

by pan. It is generally called as “Pa Ju’s Fried Bananas”.

We then bought some bananas for tasting. There are

also other fried stuff, including fried taro, fried potato,

and fried bread fruit. All fried stuff is huge, not too

floured, and not too oily.

We kept walking a little bit to Kayasit Road. Please

watch carefully so you will see a small lane called Trok

Lido. From outside, it looks crowded so we asked people

around and found that there is a very famous noodle

place. We did not hesitate to try. However, before going

there, we stopped by at Mae Roon Desserts where there

are several kinds of Thai desserts, including Floral Rice

Cakes, Thai Puddings, Thai Layer Cakes, and Thai Bean

Rice Crepes. We bought some desserts first because it

would be gone when we come back later.

Inside the lane, there is the said noodle place, called Koh

Samui Pork Ball. This shop is not originally from Koh Samui as

thought. In fact, the first owner was the Thai-Chinese man who

came to Thailand and got to know Koh Samui for the first place.

This shop is just a small cart with approximately 10 tables available.

It is always crowded and sometimes their available tables are not

enough to serve all customers. Therefore, it would take a while to

wait for seating. Please calm and try to get a table immediately

when it is open.

This place is good with pork stuff, including pork balls, chewy

pork pieces, pork dumplings, seasoned pork, and pork cakes. The

shop has special recipe to make these all porks. The tender and

chewy pork is really famous. There are 2 types of soup, clear soup

and sour and spicy soup. We can tell that their soup base is as

good as their pork stuff.

From this Trok Lido, we could pass through

to Si Samut Road. As it was almost evening, we

start to be tired and sleepy. Here, we chose to

stop by at a small café called Chubby Coffee

to relax for a while. There are several modern

drinks available. However, a cup of iced coffee

works well for killing our sleepiness. With our

favorite iced cappuccino, we picked a book

for read in this air-conditioning room to relieve

tiredness for a while

After enjoying the noodle, it was time to find some cool

thing to chill ourselves a little bet. The absolute answer for that

time was ice cream at Je Hui’s which is located close to the

noodle place we just went. The highlights of this ice cream

shop is the condense coconut milk which is aromatic, sweet,

and creamy. There is also ice cream with frozen egg available,

with wide range of toppings, including sweet sticky rice, peanuts,

soybeans, sweetened palm seeds, jelly and various cereals. The

ice cream is smooth and not too sweet. Except for coconut

ice cream, there are other flavors available, such as green tea,

chocolate, and strawberry.

The last place we stopped by to end this trip is Sa To

Tue Huan which is an antique place opened for over 40 years.

The entrails here are so delicious and fresh. The clear soup

represents sour taste from vegetable pickled. The soup is really

smooth and even better to eat with Juk Bee or stuffed sticky

rice with signature sweet soy sauce. It can be said that in Pak

Nam Juk Bee is only available here. However, it is not as same

as the original Juk Bee with peanuts. Here they use taro instead

as it is more tender and can give sweeter, more aromatic, and

more delicious taste.

After this shop, if there is some spare time, you should

not miss to go to Racha Market which is famous for good

foods in the evening. You can keep walking along Pra Karn

Road to Wat Pichai Songkram to get your car and head to

Samut Prakarn City Hall to stop by along the dam to appreciate

the romantic sunset scene with sea gulls flying around. This is

definitely amazing.

Learn about a wide variety of mushroom species


Chang Daeng Mushroom Farm is one of prominent community

-based tourist attractions as it is the source of knowledge on a wide

variety of mushroom species including Thai traditional and exotic

ones. The farm was founded by Uncle Somsak Chaikhuenkhan or

Chang Daeng, a former boat mechanic. He started a new career by

growing mushrooms for sales and then established a learning center

to provide mushroom cultivation techniques to interested persons.

Consequently, the farm embraces great learning and tourism atmosphere.

While walking into the mushroom house, we are

stunned with the scene of various kinds of mushrooms

blooming all over the house. They include Lingzhi, Hungary

Oyster Mushroom, Pink Oyster Mushroom, Abalone

Mushroom, Yamabushitake Mushroom and Ear Mushroom.

The 100-meter long mushroom house is packed with

more than colorful 20,000 mushroom spawns.

Chang Daeng tells that most mushroom spawns

in his farm are foreign species purchased from the

Faculty of Agriculture, Kasetsart University such as

Lingzhi, Abalone Mushroom and Yamabushitake Mushroom

because he is still unable to produce the spawns himself.

However, his farm can develop some species for cultivation

and distribution such as Hungary Oyster Mushroom,

Apart from the mushroom house, the farm has a

house for mushroom spawn production or a nurture house

for own cultivation and distribution. Chang Daeng tells

that lots of spawns are still not enough because each takes

much time. After putting the seeding, each spawn has to

be left for one month before harvesting and delivering to

customers.

Therefore, the farm now can produce 30,000 mush

spawns from nine species and most customers are small

mushroom farms from other provinces that are still unable

to produce the high-cost spawns.

Processing for tasty mushroom products

Since the farm can produce many kilograms of mushrooms

a day, it has oversupplying problems causing withering mushrooms.

To tackle with the problems, Chang Daeng initiated a mushroom

processing system. Now the farm sells only 30% of mushrooms

and the rest 70% are processed products such as fermented

mushroom, mushroom chili paste, dried ear mushroom, mixed

mushroom juice, Lingzhi juice and mixed three mushrooms juice.

These tasty mushroom products made by the farm are popular

souvenirs among customers.

For those who like eating mushrooms and still have no idea

for tasty menus, Chang Daeng tells that mushrooms can be cooked

in various ways such as hot and spicy soup, spicy and sour soup,

stir-fried with oyster sauce, deep fried, grilled and topped with

gravy and pickled mushroom. All of these are delicious.

Now the farm is also a mushroom learning center, so every

day there are many tourists, cyclists, representatives of government

agencies, students and university students visiting here. It becomes

a community-based tourist attraction providing visitors with knowledge

and enjoyment that you can’t miss.

Traditional Thai musical instruments are the

significant cultural identity of Thai people since the

old days. Although levels and classes of players

and listeners as well as kinds of instruments

were formerly classified, now it is open for more

recognition and learning for preservation of Thai

Mr. Wathit Saiwiman or Master Jon, a local artisan who

has had considerable experiences in traditional Thai music

instrument making for over 40 years, tells us that since his

father is a local music player, he has a chance to play some

Thai musical instruments at the age of 6 In 1967, Master

Jon at the age of 14 worked as an employee of Duriyaban

Thai musical instrument shop where he gained lots of

experiences, knowledge and skills in Thai music playing

and instrument making from respected artisans. After a

decade of practicing Thai musical skills, Master Jon set up

his own business.

“I set up my own business in 1977 and four years later moved

to the current location. Initially, I was responsible for every task

ranging from manufacturing, selling and rendering services. After

hiring more artisans, my main role is to teach them. Our works

are divided based on their expertise such as lather, lute making,

chinese cymbalo making and flute making. As all artisans have

expertise, our works are made easier. There is only technical work

requiring considerable experiences and expertise that I have to

check it. So I have enough time to impart traditional Thai music

courses to interested persons”, Master Jon explained.

Master Jon’s Duriyang Thai shop has manufactured thousands

of Thai musical instruments covering bowed string instruments,

percussion instruments, plucked string instruments and wind

instruments. However, a kind of instrument that is special and

now rare to see is the three-stringed fiddle which was noted down

in many ancient records since the Kingdom of Krungsri Ayutthaya,

the former capital of Thailand. Master Jon tells that the three-

stringed fiddle is the musical instrument that he usually makes it

by himself because the making method is rather complicated and

tuning requires much expertise. Most materials used in the making

are more expensive than other kinds of instruments.

Making method of the three-stringed fiddle begins with

wood cutting into the standard sizes and properly rounding them

to form the end piece of the fiddle which is divided into three

pieces: rounded top piece with sparse inside, three holes for pins

and one hole for fiddle string and the end piece is lathed and

widen to connect with the middle part called Lamphong; middle

piece lathed in the same manner as the upper part but gets

more special with lathed rings or oboe internodes arranged in

descending orders and the end piece is elaborately decorated

with nielloware, lacquer, carving and inlaid mother-of-pearl.

These decorative materials make a three-stringed fiddle more

costly.

The bottom piece of the fiddle or khang kai is lathed until

it looks finely sharp and has a lower serration (a piece of wood

supporting the head) to support the head. Then making holes

for the ropes (a strand of ropes on a piece of wood) to bind

the fiddle. The very end part is the foot of the fiddle where a

sharp-end metal is used to fix the fiddle while playing. After that

all three pieces are respectively assembled with the head starting

from the upper part, middle part to lower part. The head is made

of a coconut shell having three bulges like rings called Sam Sao

or Hua Chang by artisans. The cut side of the head is lined

with goatskin which can create more squeezing and echoing

sounds than calf skin. After making the fiddle rod, the fiddle

strings are threaded, the facade and the bridge are placed and

tuning is made to complete the making method.

Now Duriyang Thai shop provides manufacturing of lute,

ranad tracks, chinese cymbalo, saw u (soprano fiddle), saw duang

(treble fiddle), three-stringed fiddle, decorative musical instruments

and repairs. Prices range from thousand to ten thousands baht.

However, the prices could be higher if customers prefer more

unique works and special materials such as ivory fiddle bow,

middle piece of fiddle covered with gold leaves, mother-of-pearl

and silver lining inside or ruby decoration on the facade.

กฏสงฆคณะ 4 Monk Cloister Group 4

Wat Khlang Worawihan temple was built before the rise of

Rattanakosin and aged over 300 years old. It was appointed as

a second class Royal Temple in the category of Worawihan in

1916. The temple consists of buildings and lots of valuable sacred

objects and sacred places. One of those holy places is the monk

cloister which is “the complex of buildings” required sufficient

investment amount and craftsmanship.

Monk Cloister Group 4 A teak-wooden cloister consists

of six houses including an assembly hall. The wooden wall is

engraved with the name of the founder and age of the cloister,

“The cloister was built by Phra Ajarn Noi in Year of the Rooster

B.E. 116”. This building is the complex of wooden houses raised

high above the ground and based on Thai traditional house

building style. The main house consists of several buildings and

the main door faces towards North. The wall is elaborately

decorated with laced wood and golden teak using the traditional

timber joint-and-notch method of house building. That is why it

is called Ginger Bread Style House.

Monk Cloister Group 8 An engraved plate in the assembly

hall tells us that this cloister is aged 120 years old approximately,

but it still looks perfect and exquisite. The building consists of

seven houses including five large houses and two bird houses.

Most buildings were built in the traditional style with a gabled

roof and arched gable end, and used three patterns of gables

- Prom pattern in the guest hall, Bai Rue in the twin houses

and golden teak style on the arched entrance door which its

pane is elaborately carved. The patio constituted carved-wooden

partition, hinged panel and lotus stem pattern.

Mon girl having her hair in a bun and wearing a long cloth

through her knees and slightly revealing her thigh. She wears only

a green cloth on top and her face turns to the left as if she is

avoiding passers-by’s eyes. Her manner is about to wearing her

costume. On the left door pane, despite almost faded, we still see

a painting of a Mon guy whose lower part is bare and looking to

the Mon girl. The top of both door panes has a painting of open

curtain with a brass lantern hanging in the center, expressing

sexual relationship between the two paintings below. It is another

exotic work even created in the monastery.

The highlight of the Mon girl painting, apart from the sexual relationship, is that

the Mon-styled costume which had been widely renowned for hundreds of years as

appeared in Nirat Wat Chao Fa composed by Sunthorn Phu.

Buddha Life painting of Temptation by the Evil Episode carved on the front

Buddha sits on the haunches under a tree surrounded by the red glory and

green and red color around his head. He wears a dark red robe covering his shoulder

and ankles. Buddha sits on a three-layered lotus. The sitting posture is later known as

the attitude of subduing Mara.

The bottom locates a painting of Thokkathan Mother Earth standing in a glass

house. She wears nothing and just bends her body to the left side while squeezing

her hair in order to help the Lord Buddha fighting against the Serpent. On the left of

the painting, it shows the Serpent in green body color and having six hands sitting

on elephant back. His cloth is similar to those giants in the Ramayana, whereas the

other side is a picture of the defeated Serpent whose body color is changed from

green to the human-like color. He has only four hands left, each holding lotus and

putting together in salute instead of holding trident, discus and hammer.

The paintings were severely damaged, but the main story can be understood.

Standing Buddha Image of Disclosing the Three Worlds

The Buddha image is built in the standing posture with both hands on

his sides. The image is classified as the style of “disclosing the three worlds”

reflecting the time when the Lord Buddha came back after giving the

teachings to his mother in Tusita heaven. While descending from the heaven,

the Lord Buddha disclosed the three worlds - human world, deva world and

ghost world.

Phra Buddha Lok Ka Chet Wi Set Kit Ti Pa La Maha Chon Bu Chit or

the Standing Buddha image of Disclosing the Three Worlds with over 32

meter-high can be seen from more than 1km distance away. The image is

casted with white cement all over the body, giving the devotees serenity, great

and majestic feeling. The characteristics and the robe are simply designed with

some layers and waving feeling all over the image. It also has the mark of

urna or circular spot between the eyebrows and an eight-spoked Dharmachakra

around his head. The eight-spoked Dharmachakra refers to the Eightfold Path

as well as the 8 direction of the cessation of sufferings, which is one of the

significant Buddha teachings.

Apart from the greatness of the sculpture, Wat Bang Ping’s chapel is

well known for elaboration arts appearing on elaborately glazed and layered

castles around the entrance door, door pane wood carving of mythical animals

of the Himavanta Forest and aesthetic decorative patterns on window panes

or the Buddha image of the attitude of stopping the rainstorm.

It is rarely to see the Buddha image of the unique attitude, especially in

the large standing posture of disclosing the three worlds at Wat Bang Ping.

SPECIAL FRUIT ON GREEN LUNG AREA

Since the old days, the area next to the mouth of river in Phra Pradaeng has been widely

renowned for a traditional fruit called Honey Mango (Nam Dok Mai mango). Its speciality

derived from key characteristics of the river sediments which resulted in sweet-scented taste

of Phra Pradaeng Honey Mango. It is widely known that “Phra Pradaeng Honey Mango...Not

Second to Any Kinds of Mangoes in the World”.

According to a Thai record in the Kaempfer’s archive*, Pak Nam at that time was a

significant port and trade hub of overseas ships that usually dropped to buy some stuffs

before proceeding to Krungsri Ayutthaya. So there were lots of exotic products from different

countries transferred to and from the town. One of those products was mango that some

sailors ate and left the seeds here. With abundant nutrients from sediments of the mouth of

Chaophraya River and tropical climate, mangoes had been rapidly growing and spreading.

Based on the appearance, local residents called it Ma Muang (Pak) Nam (Scent Like)

Flower. Mango is popularly grown because it can cast a dense shade and bear fruits almost

all year round.

Phra Pradaeng Honey Mango is different from those grown in other areas that it is larger

and has sharp-end, big head and thin peel. Sweetness value is as high as 27-28 degree

Brix, whereas those grown in other areas have sweetness value of 18-23 degree Brix only.

Moreover, when it gets mature or ripe and ready to eat, the fruit’s shape is usually round

and tight with shiny skin and the end turns beautifully yellow. It also gives sweet scented

smell like blossoming flowers in the morning, luring passers-by to taste it once.

According to an article by professor Somchai Chupradit, a member

of the National Identity Board**, the key factor making the kind of

mango more special than its counterparts were that residents in Phra

Pradaeng have learned, adjusted and passed on the significant knowledge

from generation to generation that is later applied in form of local

wisdom. For example, planting mangoes on along the edges of snake

skin gourami fish ponds where sedges are also planted can attract

more cyclops. After eating cyclops, snake skin gourami fish leave

excrement. Upon scraping the fish pond, there are good sources of

fertilizers for mangoes.

Phra Pradaeng Honey Mango is an economic crop which gains

much popularity because of sweet-scented taste and medicinal

properties including cancer prevention, beta-carotene, antioxidants

and heart disease and stroke prevention. It is popularly grown in the

Green Lung area because of sufficient seawater resource which results

in sediments along the river, frequent raining and wind. These help

create proper pollination and allow residents to harvest mangoes

throughout the year that is in September to October and

November to April.

All above mentioned is just one of specialities

on the Green Lung Area, an abundant green land

in Samut Prakan. Just visit and try it once as well

as enjoying the area’s ecosystem which is widely

known as the Lung of Bangkok...and you’ll be

impressed.
