Jõulude nimetus pärineb

muinasskandinaavia

keelest. Jõuludel ei ole

mingit algset seost ristiusu-

ga ning ta on vanem kui

ristiusk Läänemere kallas-

tel.

Jõuluaeg saabus too-

mapäevaga (21. detsembril). Algas jõulutoitude

valmistamine, pandi käima õlu, tehti pühade-eelne

suurpuhastus. Jõululaupäevaks pidid olema

lõpetatud välised tööd, lakke riputati kroonid,

tuppa toodi jõuluõled ja lõikusaja esimene või

viimane viljavihk. Õlgedel mängiti jõulumänge.

Selle järgi, kui palju õlgi lakke viskamisel partele

üles jäi, ennustati järgmise aasta viljasaaki.

Jõuluööl söödi mitu korda, et toitu jätkuks, ööseks

jäeti koju tulnud hingedele toit lauale. Aknad kaeti

vaimude eest, laudas anti loomadele leiba.

Jõulukuuse komme tuli taluperedesse mõisate ja

koolide vahendusel Saksamaalt ning kodunes 20.

sajandiks. Ehitud kuuske hoitakse toas tavaliselt

jõululaupäevast kolmekuningapäevani.

Külaskäimine algas esimesel jõulupühal. Sellest

ajast kuni kolmekuningapäevani (6. jaanuar)

käisid perest perre ka näärisokud. Seljas pahupidi

kasukad, soovisid nad majarahvale õnne ja edu

ning said selle eest mitmesuguseid ande.

Tänapäeval käib jõuluajal ka jõuluvana, kes ise

kingitusi toob. See üldlevinud komme sai Eestis

tuntuks käesoleva sajandi esimese veerandi

lõpuks.

Näärid kujunesid eraldi pühaks seoses aasta alguse

määramisega 1. jaanuarile 1691. aastal. Nimetus

ise pärineb alamsaksa keelest (ni jar - uus aasta) ja

on varem kasutusel olnud ainsuse vormis tähis-

tamaks uue aasta esimest päeva. Et näärid

paiknevad jõulupühade järel ja jõuluaja keskel, on

neid nimetatud ka teisteks jõuludeks. Vana-aasta

kombestik kattus suurel määral jõuluõhtu omaga,

oli aga rõõmsameelsem ja vähem pühalik. Kom-

metele lisandus inimsaatuse ennustamist. Valati

õnne, ennustati mehelesaamist kukele viljateri või

koerale konte valida andes jne. Uue aasta esimesel

päeval käidi külas ja sooviti õnne. Kui esimesena

soovis õnne meesterahvas, pidi see tooma õnne kogu

aastaks, naisterahvas tähendas halba.

Mõnel pool visati naiskülalisele vanad pastlad kaela

või tuhka järele. Kogu Eestis usuti, et mida sel

päeval tehakse, seda tehakse aasta läbi. Tähine

nääriöö ennustas rohkearvulist loomade sündi, här-

mas mets viljarikast aastat jne.

Jõulude viimasel pühal, kolmekuningapäeval, käidi

talust tallu aega veetmas, mängiti jõulumänge, joodi

õlut ja lõpetati jõulutoite. Jõuluõled tuli välja viia

ning vokid lagedale tuua. Saartel ja rannikualadel oli

St. Martin’s Eve Party 2015

The annual St. Mar-

tin’s Eve Party orga-

nized by all three

Baltic communities

was held Saturday,

October 24th in the

Latvian Hall. Par-

tygoers, young and old, came dressed in Halloween

costumes, ready to have a good time. Truth be told,

the event actually began right after Labor Day with a

series of six weekly meeting at the home of Rimas

and Donna Miksys. For the first time in the ten-year

history of the event, the committee made a decision

to dedicate the fundraising to the three Baltic com-

munities instead of to

the Baltic Studies Pro-

gram at the University

of Washington.

Also for the first time,

the hall was decorated

in a red and white car-

nival tent theme in-

stead of the traditional

harvest theme. Volunteers spent many hours deco-

rating the hall with red and white streamers and red

and white balloons. There was a booth selling home-

baked goods and another offered wines and two Bal-

tic beers. The main attraction for the many children

at the event was the large Haunted House in the

basement of the hall. Screaming children made

countless round trips through the eerily lit house.

staff, prepared a tra-

ditional dinner of

pork loin with a

mushroom sauce, and

side dishes of sauer-

kraut and mashed po-

tatoes. Many praised it

as the best St. Mar-

tin’s dinner ever.

During the evening

Ieva Gaurys, Ona

Johnson, and Jessie Johnson circulated through the

hall selling raffle tickets for three Baltic baskets

bulging with Baltic foods and libations, weavings,

books, gloves and souvenirs. Children paraded

around the hall showing off their costumes and all

were awarded handfuls of prizes. Four adults were

also singled out for their creative costumes and

awarded gag gifts.

Most of the funds raised during the party were the

result of a live auction that featured a Valentine’s

Day dinner, a boat cruise for three couples on Lake

Washington, theater tickets, two baskets of expen-

sive Washington and Oregon wines, a wine tasting

for 10 guests at a local winery, a

trifecta of three baskets

(Christmas, Easter, and St.

John’s Eve, and skylines of Tal-

linn, Riga and Vilnius painted by

the children of our communities.

The able auctioneers were Caro-

li Leiman and Marine Du-

naravich. There was entertain-

ment too – by the schoolchildren of our three com-

munities and folk dancing by the Latviian folk

group Trejdeksnītis. Vidas Svagdys and Paul Orri-

co provided the musical accompaniment.

The event was a great party and raised nearly

$6,000 for our three communities. We trust that we

will energize our Baltic Spirit and raise even more

in 2016.

2014/2015 – tagasiulatuv ülevaade

Seattle’i Eesti Seltsi iga-aastane üldkoosolek

toimus 08. novembril kell kaks pärastlõunal

Seattle’i Läti majas. Pakuti kohvi ja suupisteid.

1. Koosoleku rakendamine.

2. Päevakorra kinnitamine.

3. 2014./2015. tegevusaasta tegevuse aruanne.

Caroli Leiman võttis kokku tantsugrupi „Tuhandest

Tuulest” 2014/2015 aasta tegevuse. Tantsugrupile

oli see aasta tegus. Esineti kõikidel Seattle’i Eesti

kogukonna üritustel, 5. mail toimunud Taste of St.

Anthony festivalil ja mai keskel toimunud

sündmusel Baltic Rites of Spring, mis toimus

Seattle’i pearaamatukogus. Samuti võeti 20. juunil

osa Sheltonis toimunud jaanipäevapidustustest

lätlaste ja leedulaste seltsis. Tantsuhooaeg lõppes

augustis Whistleris toimunud Lääne-Eesti

päevadega, kus ka „Tuhandest Tuulest” esines. Uus

hooaeg algas septembri viimasel pühapäeval Balti

Piknikuga Golden Garden Pargis. Sellel aastal

jätkas tantsugrupp ilma meesteta; meeste rühm

jätkab tantsimist järgmise aasta jaanuaris.

Septembri lõpus jätkas Caroli juhtimisel juba

viiendat aastat tegutsev lastekool „Laste Pillerkaar”.

2014/2015 hooajal käis kohal umbes kaheksa last

vanuses viis kuni kümme eluaastat. Eelmine aasta

oli lastele tegus: esineti näidendiga „Jõulupuu”,

milles erinevad loomad üritasid jõulupuud endale

koju meelitada. Samuti esineti vabariigi

aastapäeval, emadepäeval, mais toimunud

sündmustel Taste of St. Anthony ja Baltic Rites of

Spring. Samuti astuti jaanipäeval üles koos

tantsutrupi „Tuhandest Tuulest” tantsijatega. Sellel

hooajal on lastekooli juurde tulnud uusi lapsi ja

beebisid. Lapsed ja nende vanemad käivad koos

igal pühapäeval kell 4–5 õhtupoolikul Swedish

Centeris. Järgmine aasta on plaanis pikendada

lastekooli kohtumist poole tunni võrra. Iga

pühapäev õpivad lapsed eesti keelt mängude,

tantsude ja laulude kaudu. Sel aastal osteti juurde

muusikariistu ja kunstitarbeid. Mardipäevaks

valmistasid lapsed ilusaid sinimustvalgeid

liivapudeleid laudade kaunistamiseks ja maalisid

Tallinna siluette, mida oksjonil edukalt müüdi.

Praegu valmistatakse ette jõuludeks, ka sellel

aastal on plaanis näidendiga esineda.

Laulukooril oli järjekordselt aktiivne aasta. Philip

Tschopi juhatusel esineti kõigil suurematel Eesti

sündmustel. Koor esindas Seattle’i Eesti

kogukonda ka Whistleris toimuvatel Lääne-Eesti

päevadel augusti algul. Laulukoor plaanib uuesti

kokku saada 2016. aasta jaanuaris.

Jõulupidu on sellel aastal 13. detsembril ja

verivorstitalgud on plaanitud 12. detsembrile.

Vorstitalgutel on plaanis ka piparkooke

kaunistada. Ka sellel aastal on kavas jõululaat.

Jõululaadal plaanitakse müüa verivorste,

piparkooke ja teisi omatehtud hõrgutisi. Teenitud

tulu läheb Seattle’i Eesti Seltsi toetuseks.

4. 2015./2016. tegevusaasta kassa ja

revisjonikomisjon.

2014./2015. aasta kassa ja 2016. aasta eelarve

võtsid vastu ja kinnitasid revisjonikomisjoni

liikmed Paul Raidna, SES-i liige Caroli Leiman ja

SES-i laekur Kaljo Konsa.

5. Liikmemaksu määramine. Kuna liikmemaksude

sissetulek on aasta-aastalt vähenenud, otsustati

ühel häälel liikmemaksu tõsta 5 dollari võrra.

Seega on 2016. aasta liikmemaksud on järgmised:

täisliikmed $30 ja õpilased/pensionärid $15.

6. Võeti vastu jõulutervitusi ja liikmemakse.

7. Valimised.

Traditsiooniliselt valiti ametisse

eelseisvaks aastaks Eesti Seltsi uus juhatus.

Järgnevaks aastaks valiti sama juhatus ühehäälselt

tagasi. Esinaine: Kristi Urv, laekur: Kaljo Konsa,

juhatuse liikmed: Caroli Leiman, Katrine Vaenes

ja Mai Teras.

LEP in Vancouver was fantastic. If you missed it,

here is an overview: it cannot, however, begin to

convey the emotions and excitement of the week in

Canada.

The festivities for happened between August 5 to 9,

2015, in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada.

The first day was filled with greeting and meeting

old and new Esto friends. A wonderful opening

Gala included smaller teaser performances from

each of the wonderful choirs, dancers, and

musicians who would entertaining us all week.

The next day, the 6th, brought forward a number of

colorful and educational seminars about Estonia.

We also had our first opportunity to enjoy the

Unistus Chamber Choir and the premier performers

for the National Opera of Estonia. The evening

finale was a picnic. But not your everyday picnic,

it was held at the top of Whistler; the top of the

Mountain!! We rode for almost ½ hour (cable cars)

until we reached the top. After the most spectacular

sunset ever, with the Saaremaa Men’s choir singing

outside, we enjoyed an outstanding meal. The rest

of the evening was given over to singing and

dancing. We were entertained by a number of

groups from Eesti including Noorkuu, Saaremaa

Men’s Choir and Tuuleviil, and Wigla ( my

personal favorite). Everyone was still singing as we

descended back to civilization at the base of the

Mountain.

The third day we were lucky and privilege to attend

the song festival, where our own SegaKoor sang.

The presentation was exciting, and by the end there

was not a dry eye in the house. The evening ended

with the traditional Ball.

The last day was the tantspidu. The only event held

outside and the only day it really rained. Tuhandest

Tuulest took part. There were some excellent

performance. And we all came home with ideas for

new dances we could learn.

Estonia Cut off Financial Support to In-jured WWII veterans in 2014 The Estonian Relief Committee in the U.S. (Eesti Abistamiskomitee USA’s) has been informed of a grave situation facing the 60 veterans living in Esto-nia who fought to prevent the communist occupa-tion during WWI. Until 2013, these injured Estonian WWII veterans received additional compensation from the government through the non-profit Eesti Vigastatud Sojameeste Uhing (EVSU). EVSU is head-ed by Juri Teras, MD, Chairman of the Board, who has led the organizations since its re-institution in 1991 and is himself a WWII veteran. In 2013 a com-peting non-profit with a nearly identical name (Eesti Vigastatud Voitlejate Uhing- EVVU) was created, headed by Gustav Kutsar. EVVU’s sole purpose is to support Estonian troops injured only in NATO ma-neuvers, such as Afghanistan and Iraq. In 2014 the Estonian government (Ministry of De-fense) ended its annual subsidy to the WWII EVSU veterans and funded only the EVVU NATO veterans. This left the injured and aged WWII veterans to exist on the very small (250-430 EU/month) pension giv-en to survivors of Stalinist labor camps. The Defense Department continues to allocate a small additional amount to the Vabadusvõitlejate Liit, but this amounts to a pittance of ~100EU/veteran/year. The WWII veterans are in their 80’s and 90’s. Most are widowers with no surviving descendants, living in old-age homes or needing help to buy food, pay rent and buy medications. Many worry about how they will pay their funeral expenses. It is a cruel fate for these brave Estonian men, who were unable to escape to the West and then suffered through “re-education” in Stalinist concentration camps. Ac-cording to sources in Estonia, the government con-siders it politically expedient to de-fund this small group of WWII veterans. It is a grievous injustice that Estonian WWII veter-ans should be placed in such a humiliating position at the ends of their lives. The Estonian Relief Com-mittee has sent two donations to the EVSU in the past 12 months, but these men deserve more assis-tance than what we alone can provide. Kaasaegse Kunsti Eesti Keskus koostöös EV100

korraldustoimkonnaga kuulutas Eesti Vabariigi 100. sünnipäeva

puhul välja kunstiprojektide konkurss “Rändajad ja kohanejad”.

Konkursile on oodatud nii näitused, seminarid, üksikteosed,

loengud, performance’id, festivalid kui teised kunsti kätkevad

interventsioonid, mis lähtuvad Eesti ajalugu ja tänapäeva

mõjutavatest rännetest ja kohanemistest: põhjustest, miks on

Eestisse või Eestist välja rännatud; kogukondade kohanemisest

rändamistega ja selle kultuurilisest väljundist Eesti 100 aasta

jooksul. Konkursi eelarve on 50 000 eurot ja tegevused toimuvad

aprill 2017 kuni detsember 2018.

Konkursi taotluse esitamise tähtaeg on 1. märts 2016 kell 17.00.
