The district’s liquor licensing com-mittee has slammed a temporary wine bar and restaurant in West Melton in declining it’s application for a liquor licence.

The Nation Wine Bar and Res-

taurant caused West Melton Tav-ern publicans Richard Hansen and Carol Jones-Hansen some concern when it was set up in the tavern’s car park earlier this year. The Hansens have been upset with their landlords for allowing what they see as a com-petitor to set up so close.

In it’s decision, published last week, the Selwyn District Licensing Committee said it was not satisfied that operator Richard Arnott was suitable to hold an on-licence, as the application was “under prepared, incomplete and seemed to be too fluid to reflect reality.”

Amongst its criticisms, it said Mr Arnott had submitted an incorrect budget, failed to provide confirma-tion of kitchen, coffee or wine con-tracts, as well as training manuals or staff handbooks, and that the premises were an “eyesore.”

BY TOM DOUDNEY AND GABRIELLE STUART

Availability of flats and personal choice have both been blamed for large numbers of Lincoln University students living in Riccarton, where residents have been frustrated with their rowdy behaviour.

Problems caused by Canterbury University students in Riccarton have dramatically decreased due to active intervention by police and Canterbury University staff.

Riccarton residents have said they would like to see the same sys-tems put in place for Lincoln Uni-versity students.

Riccarton-Wigram Community Board member Helen Broughton is to meet with Lincoln University

vice-chancellor Andrew West on Friday to discuss the issues.

Assistant vice-chancellor Sheel-agh Matear said that staff were open to working with the commu-nity board, but would have to wait until they met to decide what forms that could take.

She did not have figures on how many Lincoln students lived in Riccarton, but believed that the majority of second-year students lived in the city.

Lincoln University Students Association president Kahlia Fryer said both availability of flats and personal choice were factors for students living outside of Lincoln.

“There don’t seem to be many typical flats in Lincoln. The places

are a bit more upmarket,” Ms Fryer said.

The association had a Facebook page called Lincoln Flats, which had been set up to help connect students with prospective land-lords or flatmates.

Ray White Lincoln property manager Leanne Croucher said university students were often turned down for flats in Lincoln because landlords often preferred to have families or staff as tenants.

“It is just that people talk and when an owner wants to rent a property they have just heard from word of mouth ‘don’t get students because they party and they will wreck the place’ and things like that,” she said.

Lincoln University accommoda-

tion manager Jan Buckland said that during her time in the position, ev-eryone who had been offered a place on campus had been successful in getting accommodation.

“We have 577 rooms for students in our halls and flats plus 50 houses that can be either leased to a student family or to individual students placed in them,” shesaid.

In May, police were called to shut down a house party on Hansons Lane, Riccarton, where about 200 students had gathered, many from Lincoln University.

Police also broke up another Ric-carton party in 2012 where about 300 people gathered. Of the 11 peo-ple arrested at the party, four were from Lincoln University.

▌▌ IN BRIEFPlanting to startA proposal to plant 22 oak trees in Sheffield, near the cenotaph, in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of World War 1 has been granted $4600 from the New Zealand Lotteries Commission. The Gallipoli Oaks project has been delayed because the site where the trees are to be planted may be too close to railway tracks, power lines and a water race. The first of the trees is to be planted on August 4, the date that war was announced, with the remainder being planted over the next four years. Each tree will be accompanied with a cross and plaque to commemorate one of the 22 local soldiers who died in the war.

Donations transferThe district council is set to ap-prove the transfer of $10,737.23 from the Selwyn District Chari-table Trust to itself at tomor-row’s meeting. The money was donated to the trust to cover the construction costs of the Selwyn Aquatic Centre.

No massive damA statement in last week’s Selwyn Times advertising feature Focus on Darfield, page 22 where it mentioned ‘the Central Plains Water Scheme that will draw wa-ter from the Rakaia and Waimak-ariri Rivers to be stored in a mas-sive dam in the Waianiwaniwi Valley’ was incorrect. The plans to build the dam were withdrawn during the consent hearing stage several years ago. The Selwyn Times apologises for the error.

Golden glow again for SophieGOLDEN GIRL: Former Lincoln High School student Sophie Pascoe (centre) won the women’s 100m breaststroke SB9 final at the Com-monwealth Games in Glasgow, beating Australia’s Madeleine Scott by two seconds. She races again tonight, in the 200m individual medley S10 heat, before a possible final tomorrow morning.

Nine Selwyn businesses, groups and individuals have been recog-nised for their excellence at the 2014 Faringdon Sensational Sel-wyn Awards.

More than 300 people attended a gala awards presentation dinner at the Lincoln Event Centre on Saturday, to celebrate exceptional people and businesses in the dis-trict.

Mayor Kelvin Coe said the businesses and individuals nomi-nated for the awards were inspi-rational examples to others, and he congratulated those who won awards.

“The awards are an opportunity to recognise individuals in the community who provide service to the wider community, and through their efforts helps make Selwyn a

great place to live.  They are also an opportunity to recognise individu-als, groups and businesses who ex-cel in their fields.”

The naming sponsor of the awards was Faringdon residential development in Rolleston, which was created by Hughes Develop-ments.

Hughes Developments direc-tor Jake Hughes congratulated the award winners, finalists and nomi-nees.

“The awards were a fantastic eve-ning and a chance to celebrate both individuals and businesses who de-serve recognition for their achieve-ments.”

Sixty-one nominations were put forward, from which 30 finalists were chosen by 18 expert judges and nine category winners selected.

•From page 1It also noted Mr Arnott’s

previous fraud conviction and his involvement in a failed business, The Quarry bar in Halswell.

Although he had acknowl-edged his conviction, he had failed to provide supporting documents required by the committee.

“If he wanted to put these [issues] behind him then he needed to convince the com-mittee that he could be trusted to hold a licence,” the commit-tee said. “The issues need not have been insurmountable, but in this case they were.”

Mr Arnott told the Selwyn Times he would appeal the de-cision.

“We will go through that process and we have got good grounds to appeal so we are going to do that and we will see what the outcome is.”

Ms Jones-Hansen said the couple felt the temporary venue should never have been placed on the site to begin with.

Mr Arnott has resource con-sent for the operation but has not yet obtained the building consent required for erecting toilets on the site.

After almost four years of waiting and seven months living in a shed, a Prebbleton couple are pleased to have moved into a new home.

Melissa and Ken Brand moved into the shed, which they nick-named the flat while their earth-quake-damaged home was being rebuilt.

Supporting them along the way has been Jenny Harkerss, the dis-trict council’s community recovery support officer.

Mrs Harkerss has been helping the Brands, as well as many other families, with their earthquake-related problems since the September 2010 quake.

“Jenny has been with us right from the word go almost, so it was great to have her here with us on our move in day,” Mrs Brand said.

“She really does go the extra mile and it’s nice to have someone make the whole experience of dealing with insurance and builders a little easier.”

Mrs Brand said the couple tried not to complain about things but it had not been pleasant living in the shed. They were extremely happy to be moving into the newly-built home.

“The house needed to be demol-ished and rebuilt from the ground up and the cracked driveway had to be replaced,” Mrs Brand said.

“While this was being done, we were essentially living in a run-down shed which was terribly cold and damp.”

Mrs Harkerss said there were a number of people in the same

position here in Selwyn. Since the earthquakes, she had been in con-tact with more than 400 families.

She was currently supporting 32 families – most of whom were waiting for repairs to be completed.

Mrs Harkerss has been helping people to resolve their earthquake claims over the past four years so she has a good understanding of the processes and systems organ-isations use such as Earthquake Commission and insurance compa-nies and is able to provide advice on how people can progress their claims.

“My days are usually varied as I

provide support for a number of different people with all sorts of earthquake-related issues. Gen-erally these people need a hand to understand the repairing and rebuilding process and advice on the companies they deal with,” Mrs Harkerss said.

“More often than not, people just need someone to talk to that they can trust.”

Mrs Harkerss said her role was all about treating people with respect, as families often felt like they were being treated unfairly or not fully informed in the process.

Mrs Harkerss is available to help anyone who may need help with their earthquake-related issues and can be reached on 027 435 2594 or email [email protected]

The Selwyn Earthquake Relief Fund was recently transferredinto the Mayoral Relief Fund and is still available to help people who were living in Selwyn during the earthquakes and are experiencing hardship as a result of them.

A charity which aims to em-power young disabled people through music will hold its first Rolleston performance work-shop today.

StarJam holds seven work-shops in Christchurch each week and is now expanding into Selwyn.

Each week 10 young Canta-brians with disabilities, known as jammers, will have the op-portunity to make friends, gain confidence, have fun and learn to dance in their own backyard without having to make a long trek into Christchurch.

Workshop tutor Samantha Pollock, who has been with StarJam for nearly two years, said she couldn’t wait to meet the new jammers for the Magic Movers workshop.

“Each jammer has their own aims and goals, not to mention interest and music tastes, and I always leave every workshop in-spired by their enthusiasm and courage as we work to achieve those goals.”

StarJam currently offers week-ly performance workshops for 70 young people with disabili-ties in Christchurch in addition to a monthly programme that is open to the entire community.

Anyone interested in learning more about how they can get involved with StarJam in Christ-church can email [email protected] or phone 423 1691.

GETTING INTO IT: Young jammers at a StarJam event in Christchurch.

Jammers in RollestonAugust 10 promises to be a very social day out on the golf course for those taking part in the charity fundraising event Birdies for Brydie, to be held at the Vintage Car Club on McLeans Island.

However, this won’t be just any golf course.

Instead, the event, organised by Lincoln University Future Leader scholars, will be a make-shift, nine-hole novelty course, with some unconventional fair-ways, unusual tees, and atypical obstacles. The day will also involve food and beverages, and a prize-giving.

The event will raise money for the Brydie Lauder Charita-ble Trust which aims to provide quality support for teams work-ing with children with neuro-logical disorders and associated health problems.

The scholars are looking for sponsors for the event, with gold, silver and bronze sponsor-ship options available, and the opportunity of donating either money or goods and services.

For more information email [email protected]. Tickets are $25 per person and should be booked as soon as possible from www.dashtickets.co.nz

Celebrating our sensational districtBY AMY ADAMS, SELWYN MP

Last Saturday evening I at-tended the 2014 Sensational Selwyn Awards dinner at the Lincoln Event Centre.

The awards, run by the dis-trict council, are presented every two years to individu-als, organisations and busi-nesses who live, work or play in Selwyn. They celebrate outstanding achievements in nine categories – agri-business; community ser-vice; tourism; arts and cul-ture; environmental; young achiever; business; sport and the Diana Isaac Cup for na-tive planting in Selwyn.

The list of nominees for the Sensational Selwyn Awards offers a real insight into the diversity and success of our region.

Selwyn’s easy access to the Christchurch International Airport is putting us increas-ingly on the map for tourists who are coming here to ex-plore our many attractions including ski-fields, cafes, art

galleries, walkways and win-eries. Consequently, business-es in the tourism sector were well-represented amongst the awards nominees.

With Lincoln University and a thriving dairy industry in our midst, it is also appropriate that we celebrate our agri-business success stories.

Selwyn has some of the most beautiful and diverse countryside you will find anywhere. Our environment is at the heart of our lifestyle. This is why it is so important that we recognise those pro-moting excellent environ-mental initiatives, including restoring our native flora.

As a mother, I firmly be-lieve that Selwyn is a par-ticularly great place to raise kids. We have wide-open spaces, fabulous community facilities and opportunities to participate in sport, art and cultural activities. We have a strong sense of com-munity, particularly in our smaller towns, where people know their neighbours and

care about each other. The awards nominees in

the Young Achievers, Com-munity Service and Sport category reflect the fact that Selwyn is a healthy, support-ive place which fosters young people and cares for new-comers and old-timers alike.

As a long-time resident of Selwyn, I truly feel that Selwyn has come of age. We have everything we need right on our doorstep.

We are no longer viewed as a dormitory suburb of Christchurch but as a re-gion with its own distinc-tive character. It is therefore fitting that we take the time to celebrate all of the incred-ible people, groups and busi-nesses that contribute to this character.

I would like to thank the district council and all of the sponsors for supporting this wonderful event and congratulate all of those in-credible nominees across all of the awards categories for making Selwyn a sensational place to live, work and play.

•From page 1Mrs Bolton believes swim-ming, along with a Botox treatment to relax the muscles in her legs, has helped Emma learn to walk properly.

“It’s amazing to see how far Emma has come since she first started taking lessons at the Aquatic Centre. Not only can she move freely in the water now, but she can hap-pily run around out of the water too,” Mrs Bolton said.

As her strength and abili-ties have developed she has become more independent and a big part of her success has been through learning in small groups of three chil-dren of a similar age.

Pre-school swim supervi-sor Jenny Heaton said Emma was starting to balance and co-ordinate herself to safely move in the pool, float on her front and back with assis-

tance, submerge under water and learn breath control.

Mrs Bolton said Emma was more confident in the water now and enjoyed jumping off the side into the water with the other kids.

“She isn’t put off by a struggle so it’s refreshing to see her being treated like any other kid her age,” she said.

“I am thankful for what

the pool has offered our family and I only hope that anyone who may be in the same position will consider using the pool too.”

Swimming can be benefi-cial to those who suffer from joint problems such as ar-thritis, and those recovering from an injury. Weight-bear-ing exercises such as running or jumping can stress the body, however, swimming is a low-impact activity which emphasises gentle and repet-itive motion.

All of the pools at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre are accessible for people with disabilities and there is wheelchair access into the leisure, hydro therapy and lane pools. A hoist has also been installed by the spa pool to help people into the pool.

Emma beats the odds

LEARNING: Emma Bolton is all smiles as she gains confidence in the pool.

Painful hand and wrist injuries are surprisingly disabling and if you have damaged the delicate structures of the fingers, hands and wrist, specialist attention is required to get things moving again. Recent scientific research is providing more evidence about the complex relationships between hands and their representation on the sensory and motor cortex in the brain; it’s an expanding area, providing us with much that is relevant in the rehabilitation of hand injuries.

Hand therapists are able to help – they are physiotherapists or occupational therapists who have a special interest and postgraduate training in treating hand injuries and conditions such as arthritis. They are able to explain the causes of the symptoms, understand the complex anatomy and will offer suggestions as to how to best manage the injury or condition. Often pain and swelling are problematic, as well as joint stiffness, weakness and tingling or numbness. Get good advice from a hand therapist about how long things should be taking to heal, what you can do to get the best results, and to how head towards a prompt return to work, hobbies and sport.

Amongst the skills unique to hand therapists is their ability to make thermoplastic supports; these are often invaluable in resting the injured area, reducing swelling and overuse, and work

in conjunction with a programme of strengthening and mobilising exercises to help get things back to normal. Often these splints are funded by ACC. We also have experience in helping with painful raised scars, persisting swelling, Complex Regional Pain Syndromes, nerve compressions and providing desensitisation programmes.

The hand therapists at In Touch Hand Therapy have a lot to offer regarding accurate assessment and treatment. If we find the problem is beyond what we can help with, or is slow to make progress, we are happy to refer you back to your GP, or on for more investigations or a specialist opinion.

If you need hand therapy, the good news is you can refer yourself to us. You can also be referred via your GP or hospital specialist if you have had hand, wrist or elbow surgery. We hold a hand therapy contract with ACC, but also welcome private patients.

IN TOUCH Hand Therapy are your providers of hand therapy in the Selwyn area. We have appointments available now in Rolleston (43 Shelley Street at SportsRehab NZ) Lincoln (19 Gerald Street) and at our main clinic in Hornby (64 Carmen Rd). For friendly, up to date, professional service and advice about getting your hands painfree and active again, put your hands in ours.

Conference looms for student

The Hague International Model United Nations Conference is held annually in The Hague, the Neth-erlands, and brings together more than 3500 young leaders from across the globe.

I have been selected as a mem-ber of the New Zealand Delegation to THIMUN 2015 in January next year.

This was no easy feat. After a rigorous selection process that en-tailed a written application, an in-terview with a panel of selectors and being observed in action at New Zealand Model United Na-tions 2014, 22 of the strongest year 13 public speakers and debaters from around the country were cho-sen to represent New Zealand at this prestigious event.

The conference is a six-day event during which time the delegation is assigned a member state of the UN to represent in intense debate on important topics ranging from the territorial integrity of the for-mer Soviet republics to combating deforestation and human rights in Somalia.

We travel to the conference via a number of cities on a study tour that visits key global institutions and allows us to experience impor-tant cultural and political sites.

We will first travel to New York where we will have amazing oppor-tunities such as a visit to the UN headquarters, a meeting with Helen Clark and New Zealand’s diplomats at the UN and visiting the 9/11 Me-morial.

Our journey then takes us to Geneva, where we will visit the UN headquarters, the Red Cross headquarters and New Zealand’s embassy.

We then wing our way to Berlin where we get a behind the scenes tour of the German Reichstag (Par-liament) and will visit the East Side Gallery, an international monu-ment to freedom.

Next we head to Brussels where we get a further taste of interna-tional diplomacy, visiting the Euro-pean Union headquarters and the New Zealand embassy.

After visiting Amsterdam, we will travel to the conference in The Hague where we will repre-sent New Zealand on the world stage.

This trip offers me the chance to gain valuable experience and knowledge on what will hopefully be my future career and therefore this opportunity is of immense value to me.

I am unbelievably excited and absolutely honoured to have been selected for this event, and am looking forward to learning so much from it. Over the next few months I will be fundraising and seeking sponsorship to attend, alongside my research preparations for this event, so it will be busy and exciting times ahead.

MAKING AN IMPRESSION: Jayden van Leeuwen at the New Zealand Model United Nations held in Wellington earlier this month.

Lincoln High School year 13 student Jayden van Leeuwen will travel to Europe next year as part of a New Zealand delegation attending a model United Nations conference for young leaders. He writes about his upcoming journey

Organisers of this year’s Canter-bury A&P Show are calling for entries to the event.

It is the country’s largest agri-cultural and pastoral show.

More than 3000 animals and close to 1000 competitors are ex-pected to compete in 1700 classes.

Entries are also open for two of the feature competitions – the Mint Lamb Competition where New Zealand’s top lambs are put to a taste test, and the Young Auc-tioneers Competition where up-and-coming stock agents show off their skills.

Canterbury A&P Association president Richard Parkes said he was confident of a strong exhibi-tor turnout.

“It’s a testament to the volun-teers behind the show and the exhibitors, both old and new, that we consistently attract some of the best equestrian and livestock entries that New Zealand has to offer,” he said.

Exhibitors will be competing for more than $100,000 in prize money at the show, which attracts around 100,000 visitors every year.

This year’s 152nd show will be held at the Canterbury Agricul-tural Park in Christchurch from November 12 to November 14.

The schedule of classes can be downloaded at www.theshow.co.nz or by contacting the show secretary on 343 3033 or [email protected]. Entries close in late September for most sections.

GARDENING

Is your garden ready for the summer season?

A bit of quick colour can do wonders, so fill bowls with flowering plants like petunias, geraniums or lobellias.

Container plants are popular but when it comes to potting mix, confusion reigns. Is pot-ting mix really necessary? Won’t soil do the same job?

And is it true that potting mix can be dangerous to handle?

Here are some answers to these common questions:

Why should I use a quality potting mix?

A quality potting mix provides the best growing medium for container plants.

Quality potting mixes, unlike soil, maintain a proper balance between holding moisture and draining well.

This means that plant roots can have access to sufficient water without the risk of drowning or dying from lack of oxygen.

Soil, because its texture varies so greatly, isn’t always suitable to use in pots. Yates potting mixes are based on organic materials and don’t contain any soil.

Potting mixes can be

specifically formulated for special purposes and situations.

This means you can provide plants with the most suitable conditions for healthy growth.

Find mixes that are specially blended for cacti and succulents, bulbs, orchids, African violets and cyclamens and hanging baskets, as well as the more general-purpose mixes.

Tips for re-potting Start by watering thoroughly.

Invert the pot and carefully remove the plant. Don’t pull it by the stem. Sometimes it helps to roll the pot on its side and squeeze gently to loosen the roots.

In extreme cases it may be necessary to break the old pot or cut it away from the root ball. Remove some of the old potting mix and check the roots for damage or disease. Trim these back to a healthy section.

Re-pot into (preferably) a slightly larger pot. Firm into place but don’t press too hard or you’ll risk damaging the roots. Leave at least 2cm of space at the top of the mix for watering. Water thoroughly.

This settles the mix into place and removes air pockets. A few

weeks later, feed with a fertiliser that suits container plants.

Don’t use dry, granular fertilisers – such as rose food – because there’s too great a risk of burning roots. Instead stick to controlled release or liquid plant foods.

Is potting mix dangerous? Like soil and organic matter,

potting mixes may carry any one of a range of beneficial or harmful bacteria.

To avoid problems it’s best to follow some simple precautions when handling any of these materials.

Keep potting mix moist, avoid breathing dust from pot-ting mix, wear gloves and, most importantly, wash your hands with soap and water when you’ve finished potting, or working with soil or organic matter.

Water wise When watering potted plants,

always check that the water can drain freely from the pot.

Don’t leave water sitting in a saucer.

If the saucer must stay be-neath the pot at all times think about putting a layer of gravel in its base so that the plant sits well above the water.

Top tips for pot mix

COLOUR: Potting mixes can be specifically formulated for special purposes.

Having spent a lot of time and eff ort creating a vegetable garden to become

more sustainable, I keep having trouble with broccoli never producing heads but going straight to seed. I tried planting out in summer and this year planted into early autumn but still the same problem. What’s going on?

Question:

Firstly, well done on becoming more sustainable and creating

your own vegetable garden! Growing broccoli over the summer months means young seedlings will often grow too quickly and can bolt into fl owering before producing a large head. Plant your next season broccoli seedlings directly into the garden in early April. This allows for good root formation before soil temperatures drop. The broccoli will then mature in a slow but steady manner throughout winter including the development of a nice edible head! Soil preparation is critical to successfully growing winter veggies. Check that your

soil has good drainage as heavy clay or water-logged soils can also contribute to poor development of broccoli heads. Incorporate plenty of compost into your existing soil. This not only helps with drainage but ensures a very healthy growing medium that is not too heavy in nutrients (too much nitrogen can add excessive leafy growth to broccoli and result in not enough head). The Waitaha Schist’s deep to medium grey colour is an ideal backdrop for the shimmering flecks that run over and through the stone. The 20-40mm grade is a perfect size to make a statement in the garden, as well as allowing plants to bring their own personality without fear of being lost amongst big rocks.

Waitaha Schist is suitable for all gardens and can be a point of difference when trying to create a vibrant and interesting look. The texture of the schist reflects unique colours brought out by differing natural light, and also gives a smart look when wet. With the added bonus of it looking great when it is wet, you can use the schist in areas where water builds up or drips and know it will still be striking. Winter is a good time to see what

areas in your garden are prone to pooling and end up looking a little worse for wear. Now is a good time to think about how you can add products like schist to your garden to help keep things tidy.

World-classCOLLECTION

By Roy Hughes

Before Massey Ferguson there was Massey-Harris, and a monument to their magni cence as tractor manufacturers is the pride and joy

of Aylesbury farmer Bob Voice. His collection of approximately four dozen

tractors includes nearly 40 Massey-Harris models, all restored to brand-new condition over many years. All the restoration, including the painting, was done by Bob personally, and at national rallies of the Case and Vintage Farm Machinery Club his various projects have accumulated a stack of rst, second or third prizes for best restoration.

Second only in popularity to McCormick Deering among New Zealand farmers, various Massey-Harris models came to Canterbury and Bob has gradually accumulated many examples.

One of Canada’s rst multinational conglomerates, the tractor manufacturing rm was founded in 1847 to produce some of the world’s rst mechanical threshers and was expanded by generations of the Massey family to become the largest agricultural equipment maker in the British Empire.

In addition to expanding into tractors in the 1920s, the company continued to make threshing machines, headers, balers and bicycles. ey were also among the rst to produce a four-wheel-drive tractor and, in the 1940s, Massey-Harris revolutionised

grain harvesting with the mass productions of the world’s rst self-propelled combined harvesters.

Bob’s collection includes a lineup of the nal generation of Massey-Harris tractor models produced immediately a er World War II and includes a 20hp, a 30hp, a 44 series and a 55 Series. He also has a very rare 203 believed to be the only example in New Zealand and one of just two to come to Australasia.

In 1953, Massey-Harris merged with the

British Ferguson company, founded by the innovative Irish engineer Harry Ferguson. e combined company became Massey-Harris-Ferguson, and was shortened to Massey Ferguson in 1958, which remains a well-known brand name for tractors.

But Bob believes the best were built during the Massey-Harris years. His collection includes other makes such as Deutz, Hanomag, Renault, Allis Chalmers and even a John Deere so he can demonstrate the superiority of Massey-Harris tractors.

Examples of the last generation of Massey-Harris tractors manufactured following World War Two.

All of these examples of Massey-Harris tractors have been restored to new condition by Aylesbury farmer Bob Voice.

Working from drawings and photographs, Bob Voice created this replica of a Parrett which is a design of tractor marketed by Massey-Harris before they begun manufacture of their own models in the 1920s.

In the 1930s, Massey-Harris were probably the fi rst to manufacture four-wheel-drive tractors and this example is among the rarest models in the Voice collection.

This Twin Power 203 is one of less than 3000 built and believed to be the only one in New Zealand.

WoF inspections nowannual for post-2000 cars

From now on, all light vehicles registered a er December 31, 1999 require only annual Warrant of Fitness inspections.

e Government’s decision to reduce the frequency of Warrant of Fitness inspections will save around 900,000 motorists at least $160 million a year. But it places increased onus on all drivers to ensure their vehicles are in a safe mechanical condition. Brakes, tyres and lights should be regularly monitored by owners and immediately repaired or replaced if there is any fault. Light vehicles registered before January 1, 2000 will continue to require a WoF test every six months.

e old WoF check regime was brought in back in 1937 with the aim of reducing the age of the vehicle eet. But it may have had the opposite e ect as owners were prompted to keep wornout vehicles in service for longer to recover the price of a tyre, or balljoint or other parts replaced to pass the last WoF check.

In some states of Australia and in the United States where there are no vehicle inspections, but owners are held accountable for the condition of their cars, vehicles are generally in better shape than in New Zealand.

A New Zealand Automobile Association

analysis of crash data showed that out of 1640 fatal crashes, there were just 89 (or 5.4 per cent) where a vehicle fault may have contributed to the crash. Of the vehicles in those 89 crashes, 39 per cent did not have a current WoF and 52 per cent had a tyre fault.

Analysis of overall NZ road crashes indicates that vehicle faults contribute to about 2.5 per cent of all fatal and injury crashes and to 0.4 per cent where the fault is the sole cause of the crash. at is about the same as countries with no or fewer inspections.

So while vehicle faults play a part in a very small number of road crashes,

reducing the WoF frequency is unlikely to increase the road safety risk. Clearly, the focus should be on enforcement to remove the unsafe vehicles without WoFs from our

roads and investigate ways to better monitor tyre condition.

Try baking for goodness’ sakeThe Big Fair Bake is back. Running from August 1 to 17, the event is a collaboration between Fairtrade and Trade Aid with the aim of improving lives of disadvantaged farmers and workers simply by encouraging Kiwis to choose fair when it comes to baking ingredients.

Aspiring bakers need to select at least two fair trade ingredients—an ingredient carrying the Fairtrade mark and an ingredient from Trade Aid— and use these to create or adapt an inspiring recipe. You then need to photograph and share your recipe on www.bigfairbake.org.nz

There are lots of delicious ingredients to choose from, most of which are found in the supermarket aisle or in Trade Aid stores and online. These include everything from chocolate and bananas to cocoa and dates.

Top prizes are up from grabs for the winning recipes including a KitchenAid, a master class with award-winning restaurant Logan Brown’s pastry chef, and plenty of Fair Trade and Milly’s baking hampers. Judging the competition this year are chefs Steve Logan, Kim Evans and Julie Le Clerc.

Le Clerc shares one of her Fair Trade recipes.

FAIR TRADE DARK CHOCOLATE TRUFFLE TORTE This very special dessert cake contains a double helping of Fairtrade Dark Ghana chocolate, for good measure. Bound with ground hazelnuts or almonds from Trade Aid, this torte is also flourless, so it makes a delectable gluten-free pudding option as well.

INGREDIENTS 150g Fairtrade chocolate, coarsely chopped eg Whittaker’s Dark Ghana 72 per cent or Green & Black’s 70 per cent 100ml strong brew fair trade coffee 150g unsalted butter, softened 75g caster sugar 4 large free-range eggs, separated 1 tsp Fairtrade pure vanilla extract 150g Trade Aid ground almonds or toasted

hazelnuts 12 toasted hazelnuts, reserved for decoration 50g Whittaker’s Dark Ghana 72 per cent Fairtrade chocolate, grated, to decorate Chocolate mousse: 150g Whittaker’s Dark Ghana 72 per cent Fairtrade chocolate, coarsely chopped 30g unsalted butter, cubed 4 large free-range eggs, separated METHOD

For the cake, preheat oven to 170 deg C. Grease a 22cm spring form cake tin and line the base and sides with baking paper.

Place the chocolate and coffee in a bowl set over a saucepan one-quarter full of simmering water to melt. Or microwave in short bursts. Stir until smooth then set aside. Place butter and sugar in a bowl and beat with an electric mixer until pale and creamy.

Add vanilla and egg yolks, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in the chocolate mixture and then stir in the ground hazelnuts.

In a clean bowl, whisk egg whites until stiff peaks form.

Use a large metal spoon to fold the egg whites into the chocolate mixture in two additions. Pour mixture into prepared tin and smooth the surface. Bake for 40 minutes or until an inserted skewer comes out clean. Remove, cool in the tin.

For the mousse, place chocolate and butter in a bowl set over a saucepan one-quarter full of simmering water to melt. Or microwave in short bursts. Stir until smooth. Add egg yolks, one at a time, stirring to combine. In a clean bowl, whisk egg whites until stiff peaks form. Fold egg whites into the chocolate mixture in two additions. The mixture may appear to split but keep folding and it will come together.

To assemble, pour the mousse onto the cooled cake while it is still in the tin. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight.

To serve, release the spring. Use a small knife to help ease the paper away from the cake. Peel off the paper and discard. Use a hot knife to cut the torte into wedges. Decorate with reserved hazelnuts and grated chocolate.

Strategic alliance to benefit land-based industries

A new agreement signed this month between Lincoln University and Open Polytechnic will give domestic and international

students increased access to agriculture, horticulture and environment quali cations at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

e synergies between the two organisations - with Lincoln University being New Zealand’s specialist provider of tertiary education for the land-based sector, and Open Polytechnic the country’s specialist provider of distance learning - will see more education opportunities for learners already working in or wanting a career in land-based industries.

e Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two institutions will see them work together to develop and deliver an increased range of courses and quali cations in the agriculture, horticulture and environment disciplines, with the aim of

“The current primary industry strategies, if successfully implemented, have the potential to significantly expand employment within the land-based industries by ‘a further 33,000 to 403,000 by 2025’.”

boosting productivity and closing skill gaps for workers in these specialised elds.

Lincoln University and Open Polytechnic will also be working closely together to explore new opportunities in the areas of professional development and the delivery of short courses.

Other initiatives expected to result from the agreement include Open Polytechnic horticulture and environment graduates being able to pathway into higher level Lincoln University quali cations, Lincoln University using the Open Polytechnic’s online learning platform to bene t their students and the establishment of a collaborative relationship to deliver tertiary education in the international market.

An immediate bene t of the MoU will see agriculture workers gain increased access nationwide to education programmes through FarmSafe, a specialist enterprise 100 per cent owned by Lincoln University.

A new programme in FarmSafe, known as FarmSmarter, has already been piloted by Open Polytechnic around the country. It focuses on extending the production management skills of farmers and farm managers.

As a result of Lincoln University and Open

Polytechnic working together, FarmSafe will also soon introduce a new programme for the horticulture sector, recognising the important role this industry plays in land-based industries.

“In light of the Ministry for Primary Industries Future capability needs for the land-based industries in NZ report released in June, this partnership is a positive step forward for the land-based industries,” assistant vice-chancellor (business development) at Lincoln University Jeremy Baker says.

“ e current primary industry strategies, if successfully implemented, have the potential to signi cantly expand employment within the land-based industries by ‘a further 33,000 to 403,000 by 2025’.”

Chief executive of Open Polytechnic Dr Caroline Seelig says the two organisations have a long history of helping increase the skills of those working in land-based industries.

“ is MoU will see us build on our di erent expertise as tertiary education providers and leaders in our elds, to harness more exible learning opportunities for those working in, or wanting to work in, land-based industries,” Dr Seelig says.

Lifestyle andMotoring

Living out of the city requires a reliable motor vehicle so when your car breaks down or needs service it is good to have a handy and reliable

repair centre nearby. Just across the railway line on the edge of the Izone industrial park is Jones Road Auto, a fully equipped workshop that caters for cars through to light trucks up to ve ton.

Nigel and Lisa Fleck have been running Jones Road Auto for two years now. With a team of ve mechanics and large workshop, they can deal with any automotive repairs and maintenance. ere is also a bay run by Jonathan that is solely allocated to Warrant of Fitness checks.

“We are always looking to o er additional services to our clients,” advises Lisa. “Two new hoists are on their way which will increase the capacity of the workshop.” ere are also plans for more expansion to better utilise the space in the premises at Jones Road.

Recently, a car grooming service was introduced in response to customer requests for this to be available when their vehicles were in for repair. “People can book in for a

car groom while their vehicle is in for repairs. When they come back their car is xed, shiny and clean,” says Lisa.

Nigel and Lisa are the sole distributors in the Selwyn District, for Ironman recreational four-wheel-drive accessories, parts and camping gear. ese are high quality products with a three-year warranty on all parts. “We are pleased to be o ering a product that ts well with our current services,” says Lisa. “ e Ironman products o er a er-market suspension systems which are popular with farmers and anybody who likes to go o -road.”

As four-wheel-drive vehicle maintenance specialists the o -roader is already signi cant to the business so it was a natural progression to take on the distributorship for the Ironman range in Selwyn. “ ese t with the outdoor lifestyle of people living in the district,” advises Lisa. “We are keen on the outdoors and as a family go camping so we were already familiar with Ironman products.”

Products in the Ironman range include winches, recovery and repair kits, batteries, lights, snorkels and exhaust systems, space

cases, roof racks, camping equipment and more. ere is likely to be something for the man who is hard to buy for; a good idea for Father’s Day which is not too far away.

Jones Road Auto’s opening hours are 8am to 5pm from Monday to Friday. On Saturdays the business is open for WOFs from 8am to 12noon. If you wish to book your car in for a service, then give the team a call on 347 4020, email o [email protected] or drop by at 851 Jones Road, Rolleston.

Yard Co-ordinator• Co-ordinate trucks and yard activities in our busy dairy operation

• Hands-on position – both yard and office based tasksHilton Haulage Limited is a well-established and recognisable brand

throughout the South Island providing a range of transport and logistics services with a focus on service excellence.

We have three new fixed term positions (approximately August/September to January/February) working within our transport operation

based on the Synlait Site just outside of Dunsandel.

These positions are responsible for the co-ordination of the incoming milk into site in tankers – ensuring a smooth flow, collection and

checking of associated documentation, assisting with milk testing and generally assisting tanker drivers with their on-site tasks.

In addition, these roles will be required to manage the CIP cycles of all tankers, ensuring our food safety requirements are met at all times.

Keeping the yard clean and tidy at all times is also a key part of this role.

Other yard associated work will also be undertaken by these positions, including assisting the on-site supervisors as required.

Key requirements for the role include attention to detail skills – especially with paperwork, sound decision making skills and the ability to multi-

task. A willingness to be part of the wider team (and therefore do whatever is required) is necessary, as is having the desire to work in a

fast-paced busy environment. A Class 5 driving licence is advantageous but not essential.

These positions work a roster – 3 days, 3 nights, 3 off.

To apply please email your CV, with a cover letter, to [email protected].

Only those currently entitled to work within NZ will be considered for this position.

FIXED TERM/SEASONAL Milk Tanker DriversWe’ve significantly increased our hourly rates and other benefits – it’s time

to consider Hilton Haulage as part of your driving career!!!

Don’t be just another number with a large corporate organisation, come and join our organisation where values such as family, flexibility and true

teamwork are as important as getting the job done.

We offer a great hourly rate (better than its ever been!!!), full uniform, travel and meal allowances, as well as modern and well maintained gear.

Being a dairy driver with Hilton Haulage is an exciting place to be. We currently have some of the biggest milk collection trucks on the road –

making us a key player in this ever growing industry. We are serious about safety – with tertiary level ACC accreditation and a 5 star rating with ORS –

we mean it when we say we care about our employees safety and wellbeing.

We are looking for fixed term drivers to assist with milk transfers from Rolleston to the West Coast, as well as milk collection in the Canterbury

area. We are looking for applications from people who have their Class 5 drivers’

licence with Truck & Trailer experience, who understand the importance of safety at work, have great attention to detail skills and the ability to

communicate with other staff, our customers and farmers.

The position works a rotating roster of 3 days on, 3 nights on, 3 days off. Normal work hours begin at approximately 6am for day shift, and 6pm for night shift. We guarantee a minimum payment of 10 hours per day so if

things are quiet you still take home the same pay.

This is a great foot in the door as when milk drops off, there may be opportunities to work within some of our other divisions – harvest, general

transport, hiabs or containers.

To apply send us an email at [email protected] with your current CV.

Enquiries can be made directly to our friendly HR team on 027 501 1052

Only those currently entitled to work within NZ will be considered for these positions.
