KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) Mayor, Councillor Ricardo Mthembu shed light on Council's latest initiatives aligned to education and underlined efforts to improve access to quality education with Council 's l imited funding at a media briefing on Thursday, 21 January 2016.
“During 2012, we took a decision to establish and support education orientated in i t i a t ives as par t o f promoting our fundamental values espoused in the F r e e d o m C h a r t e r , confirming the historical call of our forbearer's who met in Kliptown in 1955.
“It has to be categorically stated that education has n e v e r b e e n l o c a l government's core business. But it is that fundamental belief in the Freedom Charter that drives us all to go beyond those boundaries,” said Mthembu.
The Mayor said that they have bu i l t two ea r ly childhood development centres as part of supporting human capital investments and community welfare. Two of these facilities are still under construction and the o t h e r t w o a r e f u l l y operational with over 70

enrolments each year in Ntshawini, the Lloyd area and Shayamoya township.
The Local Youth Affairs adopted a back to school campaign in 2012 as one of the projects that makes s ign i f ican t impac t on challenges facing youth and vulnerable children.
“We have so far assisted 650 learners from rural schools and by the end of this year we will have a record of 900 learners along with the 250 target that we have set for this year.”
He added that KDM is in the 5th year in its program of assisting KwaDukuza youth in pursing their studies in certain fields according to the Bursary Policy.
“KwaDukuza Municipality in the past 3 years has supported 183 students with
registration fees.“This year's intake will be a
bit different, we have i n c r e a s e d t h e b u d g e t allocated for the bursary scheme from R310 000 to R 500 000 so that 100 more young people are afforded the opportunity to study at h i g h e r e d u c a t i o n institutions,” Mthembu said.
Speaking on the issue of PGL Schools, Mthembu said, “We continue to create and support the improvement of access to quality education but along the way we come across issues.
“Two years ago, we applied for an order interdicting the Ballito Academy (PGL Schools) from operating a public school in Ballito as the school is not permitted to open without special consent in terms of the Town Planning
Scheme, building plan approval and an occupation certificate. While the matter continues, we have welcomed the latest judgement that was issued by the Durban High Court last month.”
H e a d d e d t h a t t h e Municipality has been faced with malicious attacks by the people that are associated with the school about the reasons of not complying with municipal bylaws.
“ A s K w a D u k u z a Munic ipa l i ty , we wi l l continue to ensure that our municipal planning and building control bylaws are implemented without fear or favour. We are ready to deal with anybody that operates outside the ambit of our bylaws. We promote legally compliant investment in our area.”

he newly established Stanger Rehabilitation Centre in A27 Gibson Road held an awareness Tmarch on Saturday, to mark its presence
against the pandemic of drug and alcohol abuse.The march started from Indian Village, went through
Sunny Park then en route to the KwaDukuza CBD and ended up at the KwaDukzua Town Hall.
There a memorandum was handed over to Colonel Nene of the KwaDukuza SAPS outlining the Centre's partnership with law enforcement.

The process by which Rahiman interviews clients involves getting to the root of the problem and from there counseling begins.

A 40-year-old alleged drug dealer appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrate's Court yesterday, 26 January 2016, facing possession of drugs.
According to KZN SAPS Liaison Officer, Major Thulani Zwane, the suspect was arrested on Monday, 25 January 2016 after a sting operation by Ilembe Crime Intelligence and KwaDukuza Cr ime Prevention members.
“The members were doing their normal patrols in and around KwaDukuza when they followed up information about drugs at the taxi rank.
“They immediately proceeded to the rank where they identified the alleged drug dealer. He was approached and searched,” said Zwane.
He added that the man was found in possession o f 1 5 1 s t r a w s o f w h o o n g a a n d 6 2 capsules . “He was arrested and charged with possession of drugs.”

The Durban Chamber members assisted in helping the ladies fill in documents that would help them to assist their businesses. The event ended with a question and answer session.

C l o s e t o a t h o u s a n d Thembeni residents forced law enforcement to close the N2 Toll due to blockading and violent protest early Thursday morning. It continued on

allegedly set fire in the Thembeni area then moved on to blockading the toll with concrete tubing, tyres and more.

enforcement officer, the protesters resorted to throwing stones on them and a North Coast Courier journalist was also pelted.

The landscape (literally) and symbolically for High school education and future artisans w i t h i n t h e K w a D u k u z a Municipality (KDM) will change forever for the good.
The KDM Mayor, Councillor NR Mthembu, Vivian Reddy, Dr Albertina Luthuli, various councillors and other community heads were a part of the officially christened Chief Albert Luthuli Skills Centre sod turning ceremony at KwaDukuza's industrial area in Bauhinia Street on Thursday. The jet setting Reddy flew by helicopter to make shift heliport at the Country Club Ground.
According to the entrepreneur and philanthropist, the greatest chal lenge is the lack of specialised skills which is leading to a negative impact on the economy.
“KDM is the bes t run municipality in South Africa and the ability to manufacture and consume within the District is

vital,” said Reddy.He said that the centre's focus
would lie in its mandate to train close to 3000 youths and unemployed annually and will be f u n d e d b y t h e S i b a y a Community Trust.
Construction of the R7-million centre, which was Reddy's 2015 b i r t h d a y p r e s e n t t o t h e community, will be complete by April 2016. Reddy himself said the Centre will cost R 4 million to maintain annually. The main ethos is “employ people we train and eliminate poverty.”
A circulation of half-a-billion rands (R 500 million) will at one point be dedicated to labour with regards to Reddy's operations in Umhlanga and being sourced from the I lembe Distr ict Municipality as well.
Reddy's other investment to the project is his funding of a R10-million programme to improve matric results in poor performing schools in the Ilembe District.
He said that he has adopted High Schools with a poor matric pass rate as to bring a turn around
to Ilembe's Class of 2015 51 percent pass rate.
These include partnerships with local government, tertiary institutions, educational bodies and national and provincial corporates. Patrice Motsepe is said to be coming at Reddy's behest.
The impact of Reddy 's involvement in terms of sponsor sh ips , suppor t ing education, creating jobs and investing in human capital has earned him the respect of the Honourable KDM Mayor, Councillor Ricardo Mthembu.
The Mayor said that local businesses should not be threatened by the shopping complex that is coming up and instead “take the opportunity.”
The Mayor thanked Reddy for his contribution to the people of KwaDukuza and asked that he keep investing in the town.
Councillor Mthembu also spoke about the media and its influence saying “the media should be bias” in certain types of reporting.

KDVA to host Top 8 tournament

in seventh heaven over the weekend after notching up a hat-trick of victories in three different league competitions.
On Saturday afternoon they walloped bitter arch-rivals Manor by 79-runs at the Country Club Ground in an iLembe Twenty-20 League game. On Sunday morning they trounced Phoenix in their own backyard (Phoenix) by 5-wickets in a KwaZulu Natal Challenge League game with the youngsters trouncing United by 8-wickets in a domestic 50 Overs League match to notch up a brilliant sporting weekend.
In the match against Manor, Dawnheights batted first and posted 157/8 in their allotted 20-overs. Man-of-the-match, sixteen-year old Saurav Singh left the Manor lads chasing a piece of red leather all over the park with a superb knock of 55 runs which included six fours and a towering six. Arun Kumar (32) and Adesh Bageloo (30) proved their muscle with the bat.
Chasing 158 runs for victory, Manor got off to a shocker after prolific batsman Alveiro Nadasen was sent for an early shower after being run out for a duck without facing a single delivery. Aaron Pillay (2) became Dawnheights 2nd victim in the 2nd over after a superb blinder by Keane Govender in the slips.
Manor failed to recover from the early setback and at the halfway stage were looking down the barrel of defeat at 51/4 needing a further 107 runs from the last ten overs.
The youthful Dawnheights outfit who trounced Manor by 79-runs at the Country Club Ground on Saturday.

Dawnheights romped to an emphatic five wickets victory to claim pole position atop the KZN Challenge League standings.

domestic 50 Overs League game at the Gledhow Ground on Sunday.
United batted first and posted 107 all out in 45 overs at lunch. The “Ismail triplets”, Ahmed (21), Mohamed (16) and Boetie (13) were the only United batsmen to record double digits.
Tauqeer Malik (48 n.o.) and Zain Hoosen (34 n.o.) guided Dawnheights to a morale-boosting 8-wickets victory in the 26th over.
Dawnheights president, Rajiv “Tambuti” Singh was lost for words. Singh said: “Notching up a hat-trick of victories in three different competitions over one weekend is no mean feat and hats off to everyone who played a part in making it a weekend to remember”.
iLembe District Municipality, Cllr Welcome Mdabe met with the taxi council this week, to handover soccer kit including jerseys and balls as well as to wish Team iLembe well.

According to Mkhwanazi the aim of the tournament is to
build relations among taxi owner associations.
“A call came from province to establish sport c l u b s w i t h i n t h eassociations seeing that there are tensions in the industry. We also have female members that play n e t b a l l a s w e l l a sumlabalaba,” he said.
Team iLembe is made up of seven out of eight associations in the region including KwaDukuza, M a n d e n i ,N e m b e / M a c a m b i n i ,Nyoni, Dolphin Coast, Siqalokuhle and Glenhills.
“We are currently in talks with the Maphumulo Taxi Association to join us in sports. We need them because we are all one family,” said Mkhwanazi.

K w a D u k u z a D a r t s Association, who are affiliated to Kwazulu Natal and South Africa Darts Association, have commenced with their p r e - s e a s o n d a r t s t o u r n a m e n t l a s t Wednesday and wil l c o n t i n u e t o n i g h t (Wednesday) at the Quartz Conference centre at 7:00pm.
The Annual General Meeting will take place n e x t W e d n e s d a y, 3 February at the Quartz commencing at 7:30pm. All old, young and new players are invited to attend. All new and interested players will be given appropriate training and guidance.
