OUR B IG IDE A : HE L P ING TRANSFORM A NE IGHBORHOOD THROUGH ART

SERVICE CENTER an 11,500-square-foot center for contemporary culture and community located onLafayette Road just northwest of 38th Street presents an amazing opportunity to bring art andbeauty to an area lacking in these important things. And you can help Big Car and our partnersreinvest in this neighborhood and see it transform as a sponsor of Service Center.

As a 501c3 nonprofit that uses creative, arts-based approaches to improving the quality of life inneighborhoods, Big Car relishes the opportunity to join you in playing a key part in a major effort torevitalize a struggling area. We’re starting with transforming a vacant tire shop into a vibrant center

for the community and city. Service Center is a flexible cultural space serving the neighborhood, cityand region. It is being donated rent free by the owners of the adjacent Lafayette Square Mall.

Big Car will program the space often in partnership with other organizations in thefollowing ways:

• Celebrate the ethnic diversity of the neighborhood through art shows and events.• Engage adults and children with collaborative exhibitions created by and about them.• Host exhibits by local, national and international artists drawing visitors to the area.• Offer educational programs including art, performance, and creative writing classes.• Provide space and equipment for programs serving adults and families such as

language literacy, financial literacy and computer literacy.• Make the space available for school field trip visits and after-school programs.

• Provide a small library, reading area, and computer lab with free Internet access.• Create a community garden, growing food and beautifying the front of the building.• Offer a covered outdoor gathering area accessible to those waiting for buses.• Facilitate a farmer’s market, car shows and other community events and meetings.• Host live performance events including music, theater and dance.

ENTICE . ENTERTAIN . EXC I TE .

We challenge and surprise audiences with our visual art, public art, literary, musical, film and performanceevents at Big Car Gallery and elsewhere. We work with the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Spirit & Place,Indiana History Center, Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library and many others who share our passionfor this city.

WHO I S OUR TARGE T AUD I E NCE ?Big Car programs reach younger and emerging arts audiences, established arts audiences and people inneighborhoods who are not currently connected with the arts in our city. At Service Center, we will appeal topeople who are connected with the arts scene many already visiting the Lafayette Square area for its ethnicrestaurants and to shop at retail businesses. We will also work to create a new audience by exposing visitorsof all ages to the arts by including them as art makers, helping them find joy in this and by providing a varietyof other services and features that they will enjoy. Our goal is to bring more than 10,000 visitors to ServiceCenter in its first year with many more enjoying its beautified exterior from nearby Lafayette Road.

HOW WIL L WE MARKE T S E RV ICE CE NTE R?In opening Service Center, we anticipate coverage by local print and broadcast media and see this as a storythat could garner national attention. What we are doing with Service Center is very unusual on a nationallevel and something brand new for Indianapolis.

Big Car is experienced with marketing both to the media and to the general public using traditionalapproaches like sending out press releases and distributing posters and cards as well as getting the word outto email lists, on the web and on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter.

Since its start, Big Car has received strong media coverage for its programs. We’ve been featured innational publications such as the Washington Post and New York magazine, received international onlineattention on websites sponsored by Scion and Ford, and are frequently covered on local television and inNUVO Newsweekly, The Indianapolis Star and Indianapolis Monthly. Big Car has won best gallery awardsand ranks highly in many of the city’s best-of polls. It is also listed in the Midwest gallery guide, distributedthroughout the Midwest. In 2010, Big Car received a Cultural Vision Award from NUVO for our efforts inthe arts and in supporting communities.

In NUVO Newsweekly’s Best of 2010 issue, arts editor David Hoppe described Big Car’s community arts

programs this way: "In every case, the point was to show how art and artists could connect with people whotend to say that art is for somebody else, engaging these folks in the actual creation of works dealing withwhere they live. For once Indianapolis appears to be ahead of an arts-related curve. Big Car’s emphasis onmaking a variety of neighborhoods partners and participants in creating works of art shows the way to whatcould be the Next Big Thing in the arts here: A socially engaged approach that takes the emphasis off of support for artists in favor of putting artists to work in the revitalization of neighborhoods throughout the city."
