PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Welcome to new Trainee Congratulations to Kyanah Goggin who has been appointed to the position of Co-curricular Music Trainee. Kyanah is an ex student from MacKillop in 2014. I am sure you will join with me in welcoming Kyanah to the College this year. Inaugural Mass I would like to invite you (Parents and Families) to join staff and students at our Inaugural Mass on Wednesday, 25th February in our College hall at 9.30am. College Swimming Carnival This week the College community gathered for our annual swimming carnival. Aside from being so well-attended, it was wonderful to see our students supporting their House in such a spirited fashion. I would like to personally thank the staff and management at Port Macquarie Pool for providing such a well-prepared and welcoming facility on the day. Once again, our Sports Coordinator, Mr Michael Cannon had the carnival run like clockwork and to all College staff who collectively supported the day in their various roles. In particular, I would like to give a special thank you to our Year 11 and 12 Hospitality students who catered for the day and their supervising teaching and support staff.

Congratulations goes to Oxley House for their most convincing win on the day. Senior students from Oxley did a fantastic job in leading junior students.

I would like to congratulate the Age Champions and Runners Up on the Day. For a full list of names and photos, please refer to the sports section at the end of this newsletter.

God Bless

FROM THE LEADER OF CATECHESIS AND SCHOOL EVANGELISATION Ash Wednesday-Project Compassion On Wednesday as part of our Ash Wednesday liturgy, we will launch our Project Compassion Appeal. The season of Lent invites us into a time of reflection, transformation and conversion. Supporting the initiatives of Caritas through Project Compassion is a step towards improving the living conditions of disadvantage communities in Australia and throughout the world

Project Compassion 2015 focuses on “Food for Life.” It throws a spotlight on global food issues and how Caritas Australia is empowering the world’s poorest people to establish sustainable food sources for life. There will be a variety of activities held during this Lenten season in our college community to support Project Compassion. The Caritas website has some interesting stories and descriptions of the various projects we will be supporting Nora Swain

Youth Ministry Faith is not just an extra-curricular activity, it’s a lifestyle.

Faith enriches our lives with love and allows us to grow into a complete and developed person. Faith is so fantastic in that we have a unique opportunity to make our faith our own, we are free to express ourselves how we want to.

Whether we are new to it or a veteran, a fantastic way to enrich our lives with faith is by attending a youth mass. This mass is a beautiful way to understand the relevance of God’s word in our own lives. I encourage anyone to come and check out what it’s all about, weather you attend the youth mass, the Encounter youth group or both, you’re guaranteed to meet some fantastic and welcoming people. I hope to see you there.

St Agnes Youth Mass: St Agnes Church, Hay St Port Macquarie. Every Sunday afternoon at five o’clock

Encounter Youth Group: St Agnes Youth Hub, Horton St Port Macquarie. After youth mass on Sundays approximately 6:00pm – 8:00pm

NEWS FROM THE LEADER OF ENGLISH LITERACY MATTERS

Writing is a fundamental skill which enriches, empowers and ultimately provides opportunity for students as they continue their academic journey here at St Joseph’s Regional College. For this reason, writing is the core literacy area which we will focus on throughout 2015.

After what has been a successful implementation of the PEEL strategy for paragraph writing over the past two years, this year we intend to focus on further improving extended writing for all students, across all years. In short, we are working towards excellence in writing.

What do excellent writers do? They:

Establish: Effectively plan responses

Expand: Develop their ideas further, adding depth and detail

Elevate: Use rich and sophisticated vocabulary with control

Edit: Check for errors concerning spelling, punctuation and

sentencing in an effort to refine their work

You will notice that your student has been issued with a laminated copy of language terms, which is to be used at home should extended responses be required for homework, assignments and assessments. Please encourage your child to place these terms in a prominent place (above their study desk, for example) and to use these terms when needed or directed. These terms will also be issued at school through Key Learning Areas and will be accessible electronically in the near future. The aim is to elevate the language use of students through this resource. Senior students are encouraged to have their laminated sheets in their folders at school, at all times.

Anne Marchment Leader of Literacy

NEWS FROM THE LEADER OF HSIE Year 7 History Club starts next Wednesday, 18th February.

The History Club is an extra-curricular activity offered to Year 7 students who would like to learn more about history and get involved in making historical models.

Our current project is painting and making a 1/32 scale Roman Bireme ship with 63 crewmen and over 600 parts. (see picture). It is free to join the History club, all paint, brushes and models are provided. Students will be taught the various skills to make models – all you need is patience and a way home.

History Club is after school on Wednesdays from 3.30pm until 5.00pm, students must make sure that they can make it home after this time, perhaps someone to pick them up after work.

Students do not have to commit to every Wednesday; please let Mr West know if you will not be there. Those that attend 20 times in the year will receive a History Club pin to wear and have the opportunity to continue in the club after Year 7. (Currently, four students taking up that option in Year 8).

If interested listen out for registration meeting and complete the permission note. Once form is returned you can start from Wednesday 18th February. (next week 4). Why not come along and see what it is like. No problems if you decide it is not for you.

LIBRARY NEWS

Textbook Responsibility

Parents and Students are reminded that when a resource such as a textbook or library book is issued to a student that person is then responsible for the safe stewardship of that item throughout the loan period and consequently returning to the Library by the specified date Sign-out Procedure If a student departs the College, they must collect a sign-out sheet from the College office. One requirement of every student is that they return all textbooks and Library books to the Library, and it is the student’s responsibility to check classroom cupboards, not the teachers, or Library staff. Many thanks to all those who complete this requirement promptly. Like us on FaceBook – St Joseph’s Regional College Library.

2015 Swimming Carnival

Last Tuesday we held our annual swimming carnival at the Port Macquarie Olympic Pool. It was our biggest Carnival in the school's history with close to 1000 students and staff in attendance.

With so many students, it put added pressure on our staff to run the program as efficiently as possible and they were definitely up to the challenge. We managed to get all freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly events completed before lunch.

The afternoon was made up of house relay events in each age group followed by presentation of age champions and winning house.

Congratulations to Oxley House on defending their title.

Full house points, age champions and new records are available on our sport website and also in Mr Dempsey’s article in the newsletter. Congratulations to all students.

Regional Swimming Squad to compete in Kempsey will be announced soon.

Students wishing to nominate for the following long distance events - please submit a timesheet to Mr. Cannon from either the NSW Swimming or Swimming Australia websites by Monday the 16th February. 100m freestyle, 100m breaststroke, 100m backstroke, 100m butterfly, 200m freestyle, 200m IM. 400m nomination please. Nominatate by clicking here (Diocesan Form).

The team will be announced on Wednesday the 18th February.
