rig sites, there is often turnover as high as 25 to 30 per cent, and often times higher. This high turnover rate comes from a multitude of factors including, but not limited to: the expansion of the industry as a whole, changes in the industry, site specific reasons, and burnout.

With these issues, a unique set of problems for companies has arisen. From the operations side, managers are constantly training new employees how to operate equipment. Time spent training is time that managers cannot afford to have wasted. The solids control industry recognises these problems and has consistently designed equipment to be user-friendly and easy to operate in order to ease this burden.

Safety and ease of operations often go hand-in-hand. By providing user-friendly equipment, a sort of ‘dummy proofing’ occurs which not only helps with the previous concern of training, but it also helps to reduce safety risks. Further risks are reduced by this new technology as less manual work is required and personnel are less exposed to fluids and cuttings.

Another recent innovation would be manufacturers are now providing operators with indicator lights and alerts that show when the machine needs to be serviced. Sensors have been developed for equipment to be able to protect itself from overloading conditions and operator errors. Additionally, more and more systems are being pushed to provide ‘cruise control’ capabilities. Elgin has integrated these technologies partly due to the fact that oil and gas industry is sluggish to embrace new technology; instead, they are much more likely to choose classic technology that has been enhanced. For instance, Elgin’s centrifuge controls now utilize touch screen technology that can be operated from a smart phone or tablet.

With regards to recent innovations with shale shakers, VFD panels have been developed that can provide the operator with both balanced elliptical and linear motion. By providing both settings, operators can now adjust the equipment relative to the type and volumes of solids being experienced. High G’s are excellent for high solids or high flow, but consistently operating at this level constantly will damage screens.

As previously stated, knowledge has continued to grow throughout the industry worldwide. With this now widespread knowledge, proper solids control systems are now seen in almost every operation. As time progresses and the industry continues to grow, operators can expect an expansion in these types of technologies with the next generation of systems.

The market will continue to see a push for smarter equipment and smarter solutions. Elgin recognizes this and is a company that strongly believes in innovation.
