Thriving Through Pain
Have you ever considered the juxtaposition of darkness and light; sadness and joy; pain and
peace? We don’t typically like to focus on the negative qualities in our lives, but, if we really stop and think about it, we need them in order to fully appreciate the light, joy, and peace that God provides. I read recently that “Growth universally comes through change, and change comes through pain.” How true that statement is. Consider the following:
Jesus came to bring us life but he had to suffer and die before he could triumph over sin and the grave. Saul – the Christian killer – had to go through a dif-ficult transition before becoming Paul – one of the most devoted disciples in the Bible. Job hit rock bottom and was stripped of every joy, but, because of his faithfulness to God, his posses-sions and health were restored.
These are just a few of the examples in the Bible that demonstrate how change and healing comes through pain, but consider this one from nature: A seed must be “broken” in order to produce the plant-life that is con-tained inside. What about your life? Are you going through a difficult time? Have you been broken? Sometimes it may seem as if there is no light at the end of the tunnel, but you must-n’t let life’s circumstances rob you of your joy. Instead, continue to trust in God to deliver you. In 1 Corinthians 9:25 Paul said, “Everyone who competes in the games trains with strict discipline. They do it for a crown that is perishable, but we do it for a crown that is imperishable.” Dear church, keep fighting, keep running, and keep thriving, and you will truly flourish.
Sermon Outline
“Don’t Touch!” 2 Peter 3:17-18
Introduction: When God spoke the world into existence, he was pleased with the end result. It was good, and so were the various lifeforms that he made to live on it. But out of all created things, it’s humans that have had a difficulty staying away from things that are forbidden. God said, “Don’t touch”, but we often fail to listen.
Adam and Eve’s Deception
1. The first couple mentioned in the Bible was fooled by the serpent. A. Though they had heard God’s command not to eat from a
certain tree, they disobeyed him anyway.
B. As a result, their holiness before God was subverted and sin entered the world – affecting us even today.
2. Uzzah’s Good Intention
A. Uzzah was responsible for transporting the Ark of the Cove-nant in 1 Chronicles 13. When he saw that it began to tip, he reached out to stabilize it.
B. Although Uzzah had good intentions, he intentionally diso-
beyed a commandment given by God hundreds of years earli-er and was immediately struck down.
3. Paul’s Instruction
A. Though there is no Ark of the Covenant or any forbidden trees today, there are still things that God tells us not to touch. (See 1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Galatians 5:19-21; and 1 Thessalonians 5:16-22).
B. Our failure to be holy and avoid what God has called sin will
prevent us from entering heaven. This is not my opinion, but what the Word of God says.
Conclusion: A couple weeks ago we talked about how to properly re-move sin from our lives. However, if we obey God’s command, “Don’t touch”, then we wouldn’t have to worry about removing sin because it wouldn’t be there in the first place. This morning, remember the old adage that, “The best offense is a good defense,” and if you’ve been touching sin, get away from it as quickly as possible so that you can stay on the narrow road that leads to eternal life.
