A wide-range of applications ispossible, particularly since voiceand data can be transmitted overthe same microwave link.

A typical scenario is an enterprisewith a branch office located at somedistance from the main premises.Service convergence is the wordsummarizing the trend of this kindof network, and once again flexibilitybecomes a must even in this case.

SRAL XD line is primarily designed forurban networks, but is also suitablein regional networks meeting all therequirements of access and trunkapplications.

    • Mobile Networks: in the 3G MobileATM based network, typically SRAL XDis used to collect traffic conveyingfrom NodeB to Hub stations; in the2G networks it is already implementedto provide access to core networks. In the next future, the overlayof the two mobile networks willcertainly benefit from SRAL XDupgrading facilities, rewardingoperators with flexible and versatileinfrastructures.

    • Fixed services Networks: SRAL XDsupports ATM/IP networks, LANand WAN.

Add/Drop and Crossconnectionfunctionalities enrich the set of SRAL XDfeatures: any E1 stream plugged inthe near end terminal can beextracted from any E1 connectorof the far end terminal, eliminatingthe need of bulky distribution frames.Furthermore, the Add/Drop facilitypermits to drop the required E1 instation leaving the remaining streams

Based on network specific needs, theoperator can select either higherspectrum efficiency or higher systemgain and hop lengths. All the parameters can be softwareselected locally or remotely in orderto adapt the hardware platform toeach single link characteristic interms of available RF channel, payload, usable bandwidth and hop

length.SRAL XD flexibility and versatilitygreatly optimize all the upgradingprocedures and configurationchanges. A terminal can be easilyrelocated without any hardwaremodification simply re-shaping itspeculiar parameters on the new linkrequirements.Another important strong advantageis represented by the extremecompactness of SRAL XD Indoor Unit.A single 44 mm high unit is sufficientto implement any protected orunprotected terminal configuration, minimizing the impact oftransmission equipment.

    System architecture

    Main features

SRAL XD equipment is available inSplit Indoor and Outdoor Configuration;both the IDU and the ODU have beenredesigned in order to reduce theirmechanical dimension respect tothe previous SRA L generation of PDHmicrowave equipment. In fact, inorder to save room for the indoorinstallation, the dimensions of theIDU have been dramatically reduced,

passing untouched.Automatic Transmitter Power Controlhas been implemented to increasethe system performances, reducingpower consumption and interferencein crowded nodes; ATPC function canbe switched off, setting thetransmitted power to a fixed valueincluded in the ATPC interval.

    4

moving the mo/demodulation sectionto the ODU. As a result the IDU ableto provide protected configurations isonly 1U high.In spite of this change thedimensions of the ODU have beenreduced as well by adopting the stateof the art technology.

TwoE1The TwoE1 indoor unit is based on a single replacement unit and it has

been appositely developed for those applications where low capacity inunprotected configuration is required. The TwoE1 family is conceived as an “entry level” solution for trafficbackhaul within access applications or mobile networks. The TwoE1 version offers 1+0 configuration with capacity up to 2xE1.

SingleBoardThe 1U high SingleBoard IDU is based on a single board architecturecharacterized by a fixed set of functionalities. Four versions are available:

    • up to 8xE1 (1+0)• up to 8xE1 (1+1) Hot Stand-by• up to 16xE1 (1+0)• up to 16xE1 (1+1) Hot Stand-by

Plug-inThe Plug-in version adopts a modular architecture:the basic configuration (1+0) consists of a controller, an access cardand a base-band card; in order to arrange protected/add drop repeaterconfigurations, an additional base-band card has to be addedin the same shelf. The Plug-in version is able to provide a full set of configurations/interfaces:• (1+0)/ (1+1) Frequency Diversity/Polarization Diversity with hitless switch,

    Hot Stand-by, 2x(1+0)/Add-Drop Repeater Configurations• payload interfaces: 2/4/8/16/32xE1

State of art RF technology has beenthe baseline for SRAL XD ODUs’development, completely matchingall the technical constraintsintroduced by the high modulationscheme adopted for the HD version:system linearity and synthesizer

    phase noise.

Two different outdoor units, capacityindependent, are part of SRAL XDsuit:

ODU NDis the appropriate solution fornormal density arrangement, able to achieve the best compromisebetween performance and powerconsumption by exploiting a

    constant amplitude modulationformat (4 CPM).

    OUTDOOR UNITS

SRAL XD has been engineered tosimplify to the maximum extent allthe operations related to the systemsuch as installation, maintenance, upgrading and supervision.Configuration settings, systemupgrades can be remotely performedwith software downloads, withoutthe need of sending technicians on site. The compact size and reduced weightof the Indoor Units, Outdoor Unitsand antennas allow a faster andeasier deployment, together with areduced environmental impact.

The Outdoor unit can be directlymounted on the rear of the antenna, avoiding the use of any waveguide.Several mounting structures, holding

one or two ODUs, are available for

integrated or separated ODU-antennaconnections.Moreover, the IDU hosts anextractable“Memory Key” in which theconfiguration of the system iscontained. The use of this key allowsan easy ‘in field’ replacement of theIDU withoutthe use of the LCT, as well as off-lineinitial software configurationswithout any need for settingparameters during the installation.

ODU HD/HPborn for high density arrangements, the same equipment is capable toperform normal density arrangementas well thanks to software selectionof the relevant modulation format. The adoption of Trellis CodeModulation leads to Rx thresholdlevel unmatched by a plain 16 QAM

    modulation.
