PENSAMIENTOS DE NUESTRO PARROCO PASTORS PONDERINGS

Dear Parishioners, On this Fifth Sunday of Easter, we remember that Jesus is the vine and we are the branches. It is good to remember this especially in our time that puts such a premium on self-realization. Yes, we have a purpo-se, yes, we have a destiny, but these come only in the context of our connection and faith in Jesus. It is doubtful that 100 years from now anyone except possibly a few of our descendants will remember anything about any of us. And many of those who are remembered in history would probably prefer to have remained anonymous. The main Servite Plot in Chicago at Queen of Heaven Cemetery is across the road from the old Italian Ce-metery of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. And inside that Cemetery is the plot where the notorious gangster Al Capone is buried. First, it is remarkable that Al Ca-pone is buried in a Catholic Cemetery at all. It ap-pears that he would have made a (very) good Confes-sion before he died. That said, his tomb has been re-peatedly defaced and his tombstone reads today: “May God have mercy on my soul.” Indeed. On the flip side of things, we remember today St. Paul in the First Reading and the difficulty that the early Christian Community had initially with accep-ting his conversion. Yet, change he did, and he beca-me a model for conversion for many, many other sin-ners across the centuries until today. One of my favorite Saints is St. John of God. He be-gan his adult life as a mercenary, killed a lot of peo-ple, for pay. Yet, one day, watching a religious pro-cession pass through his town, he broke down, recog-nized what a great sinner he had become. The next day, he dragged his former armor through town in a bag behind him as a penance and dedicated the rest of his life serving the poorest of the poor of his time. We can change, we can come to do better, and we can all bear lots and lots of fruit. May we give thanks to the God who loved us, who crea-ted us, and never ever gives up on us. -- Fr. Dennis

- P. Dennis

BEARING FRUIT

FEAST OF FAITH

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Few of us, even when we meditate on the image of the vine and branches, stop to really think about how God “prunes” us. For some there is the danger of thinking that we are already producing fruit for the kingdom, in deed and truth as John says, perhaps raising a family, being active in our parish, and so on. But even those branches which are bearing fruit, the Gospel tells us, can be pruned to produce still more. Today Saul, freshly “pruned” by his conversion, arrives in Jerusalem and meets resistance. Since he had been persecuting Chris-tians, this was only natural. But even after he is accepted and begins to bear fruit, he meets further adversity, and his letters are filled with many accounts of how his trials “pruned” him to produce greater fruit for the kingdom. Like him, as long as we remain in Christ we will continue to bear fruit and, when the will of the Father determines it is time to prune us, the strength of the true vine must enable us to endure it. The Homily The ambo, or pulpit, is a special place—it is the place for God’s word. That is why it is not used for all the spoken words of the Mass, even important words like the collects and the blessing. The ambo is only used for the scripture readings, and for the homily and the prayer of the faithful. The homily is part of the Liturgy of the Word. It flows from the readings we have just heard, and helps us to understand the way in which God is speaking to us to-day. The homily is not a lecture, a catechism lesson, or a speech. It is more like an exhortation; it has an urgen-cy about it, for it calls us to find ourselves in the scrip-ture, to live the faith we profess, to see our world by the light of the Gospel. The homily, in itself a response to God’s word, demands a response from us. There are many styles of preaching and many ways to respond to the scriptures. But whether the homily is weak or strong, an open ear and an open heart can find in it an abundance of spiritual nourishment. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

¡Gloria a Dios! ¡Aleluya! ¡Gloria a Dios! ¡Gloria al Señor! ¡Aleluya! ——Miguel Arias, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
