Since 2009, TEDxTaipei has hosted close to 200 salons and conferences throughout Taiwan.

Here's a glimpse of when these stories of Taiwan were created and shared.

Page 7: Taipei 20132013.tedxtaipei.com/brochure/tedxtaipei_2013_brochure.pdfTaipei 2013 “ It was the best of times; it was the worst of times. And this is the age of participation. ” A

Taipei 2013

“ It was the best of times; it was the worst of times. And this is the age of participation. ”

A number of major events has happened in Taiwan in the past year. Many of these incidents came too abruptly, and were too short-lived to leave a lasting impact. Despite the chaos, we should pause and identify the key messages that mark this era. What are the mental images we want to communicate to the world and to our children? Do we want to move forward, or should we remain in the midst of uncertainty?

This generation needs a special force to spark participation. All of us must stand united in our beliefs and values and speak our minds. This generation calls for a collective momentum to “flip” and jumpstart Taiwan. This “flip” requires cultivated resilience; a fearless determination to grow and move forward, yet with the ability to remain true to its principles.

Seek the rebirth. Start the rebuild. Sense the reborn.

"Sangpuy Katatepan Mavaliyw is a Taiwanese singer who is from an ancient Aboriginal tribe. ”My name is Sangpuy, my grandpa was named Sangpuy, and so was my grandpa’s grandpa. The name 'Sangpuy' has been passed down to me from generations ago, and my offsprings will also carry this name.” Every Sangpuy had his own role and responsibility in his society; For this generation's Sangpuy, it is his duty to let the world hear the wisdom of the Taiwanese aborigines’ music and culture

After the 921 earthquake in 1999, Sangpuy toured around with Taiwan Aboriginal World Music Workshop (http://www.abomusic.org.tw), and his music encouraged many aboriginals to stand back on their feet. Since then, Sangpuy continued recording and performing around the world with other aboriginal musicians. His efforts and involvement in aboriginal music reinforced his true calling in promoting aboriginal music.

Sangpuy has been not only creating aboriginal music, but his contributions also include cultivating the next generation of Taiwansese Aboriginal music talents. He hopes that these wonderous sounds will be celebrated by folks all over the world. "

I have been a news anchor and reporter for 15 years since I was a political science major in college.

I am consistently thinking about these following questions: what is the inner drive to make progress of a society? Where can we explore this kind of drive? Is it possible to build up the inner drive in people’s mind?

In order to make advanced progress in the society, we need to ingrain the concept as DNA is to human. We need to stay curious, be unsatisfied with the impulse of changing, try different approaches that all come along together to push the way on the track of being more civilized that one day we could end unfairness, injustice, and inhumane in the society.

As a journalist, we are expected to pursue the truth. What we can do other than that for the audience is to provide concepts, measures, conversations and ways of thinking to make progress. It is not easy at all to change the world, but I still believe that if we mean it, we can make differences to the world.

We can change the world together.

Taiwanese 3D chief director Charlie Chu is one of the first 3D stereoscopic film directors in Taiwan. In 2002, with a brain tumor size of a fist, the doctor informed

him he only had six months of life left. He endured a 28-hour long surgery to remove the tumor, and

survived the ordeal with the hearing loss in his left ear. This undoubtedly has a huge impact on the filmmaker.

After the brain surgery, Charlie still had to face numerous obstacles in his life. He chose to face these

challenges like a fighter.

Charlie concentrated his life's passion in 3D technology by researching innovative ways to advance in this

field. In 2013, his hard work led him to an opportunity to partner with famed director Ang Lee in the

documentary "3D Taiwan". The project earned him his first Creative Arts Award, the equivalent of 3D

Academy Award. His visually appealing and inspiring works have earned accolades among his fans as well as his peers. His represented works include 3D movies

such as “Mayday Dream 3DNA”, “Clownfish”, the documentary “3D Taiwan” and so on.

Szu-Pang Yang is a small-town doctor who also happens to be an enthusiast of world history, literature, and his motherland, Taiwan. He is aware of the fact that decades of dictatorship and repression have had a great influence on many Taiwanese people. Not only are they facing national identity crisis, but also do not have a clear understanding of the rights and responsibilities of being a citizen.

To advocate civic consciousness, Dr. Yang offers his talks free-of-charge to anyone who can help draw a crowd. His passion to educate everyone on their civic duties has already taken him to various regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and United States. He is expected to complete 120 speeches by the time he takes the TEDxTaipei stage.

It is his sincerest hope that the people of Taiwan will stand forward and exercise their civil rights by showing up at the polls in the referendum on the fourth nuclear power plant.

Azizi Tucker

Sketch to SKU 專門

Sketch to SKU

Azizi Tucker

Azizi Tucker likes to go fast. Whether it was racing mountain bikes in the 1990’s or developing manufacturing and quality processes for Tesla Motors, the faster the better. Azizi owns Sketch to SKU, a product development and engineering consulting company. Sketch to SKU focuses on helping non-engineers transform their ideas into sellable products. His company works to ensure that designing a product is not limited to engineers but is available to “normal” people. A key to efficient and sustainable products is to tailor designs to the strength and methods of local suppliers.

Sketch to SKU is currently completing design and production of both gas and electric racing cars manufactured in Taipei. Sketch to SKU is also designing and testing “hyper-local sourced” electric bikes.

He understood that his education would continue if he chose to work on the correct projects. His search for an educational work environment lead him to the Detroit car industry, then on to NASA Goddard Flight Center and finally to Tesla Motors in California. He was responsible for Asia Supplier Development and began his working career in Asia.

U-Learn, who is best known for his unique artistic style suffused

with grace and charm, managed safety and security for a large company shortly after finished Master degree in Security Management from University of Houston. Later on, he acted as sports anchor and broadcast host for Houston Rockets, also dabbled in NASA’s space education program for Taiwanese children.

One should not underestimate the special gift as a musician. Under the tutelage of the master whistler father, he picked up whistling when he was four, and performed on stage at 7. Being mocked by peer classmates, he felt ashamed to practice whistling and refused to be heard by anyone.

Unexpectedly discovered, he was invited to perform whistling at Taiwan’s National Concert Hall, accompanied with orchestra, and the performance was sold-out. People were amazed that he could both pucker for simple songs and present artistically elegant melodies.

U-Learn believed that anyone could whistle. He now realized his ability is a special gift from God. He dedicates his heart and energy to promote “Lip Music”, his responses to His calling. He dreams of creating a “Lip Music Choir” one day.

“Make Me A Channel”, the first Lip-Music Jazz Gospel, was released in 2012. His lips led to three invitations to perform: at Taiwan’s equivalent of the White House, in a McDonald’s advertisement, and on the international stage.Whistling is his gesture of gratitude to family and friends who love and support him,

2012年推出世界首張唇音樂Jazz Gospel專輯 “Make Me a Channel”

『LED MAN』表演。

Luxy Boyz

A b o u t :

Feast your eyes on this electrifying visual art and dance performance!

Equipped with their love of hip-hop dance, the Luxy Boyz crew was established in 2005 in Taiwan. Don’t be fooled, Luxy Boyz is no ordinary hip-hop dance group.

Taking hip-hop dance to another level, Luxy Boyz’s performances challenge the conventional idea of hip-hop dance – the crew uses spectacular technology in lights and out-of-the-world costumes, introducing their audiences to a Luxy Boyz’s style unique art form.

Constantly experimenting and breaking the boundaries of their art, Luxy Boyz are not afraid of exploring new ideas to elevate the level of hip-hop dance. In 2009, the world’s first LED show, entitled “Blacklux”, was brought to life. As Luxy Boyz steadily gained recognition for their art, their performances became increasingly otherworldly with “White Iron Man D-VA” – Asia’s one and only giant human-robot show – which caught massive attention from the media. The crew eventually became a big hit in 2012 when they participated in “China’s Got Talent”, allowing them to gain more exposure and experiences working with many first-tier suppliers and co-stars.

Based in Montreal, Canada, Cirque du Soleil is reputed to be the one show you simply can’t miss. During the thirty years after it’s founded, only four people from Taiwan have been invited to be their official performers.

Strongly impressed by the performance of Cirque du Soleil, at the age of 17, Hsing-Ho Chen told himself, “I want to join Cirque du Soleil!” Once remote as a fantasy, Hsing-Ho Chen’s goal was fulfilled ten years later as Cirque du Soleil surprisingly invited him to join them. During the days at Cirque du Soleil, he had to stand on the three-story tall stage and shared his passion with the audience.

With such incredible passion, Hsing-Ho Chen not only appeared in 437 performances with Cirque du Soleil, but also brought juggling to National Theater for the first time in Taiwan. Moreover, his life’s work and journey were made into a TV show by PTV and the Thanksgiving Foundation. Through lectures and workshops Hsing- Hi Chen will demonstrate personally “the passion of a fool.”

“When the government brings darkness, it is up to the citizens to light the way.”

On July 13th, 2013, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense blatantly disregarded human rights, brashly handling the death of conscript, Hung Chung-chiu. In response, an outraged netizen soon posted a manifesto on PTT, Taiwan’s most influential bulletin board system, hoping to draw 50 protesters for a 10-minute demonstration.

Soon, the call for justice rallied 39 strangers around Taiwan. Through their efforts, the original declaration continued to garner tremendous support in the following weeks. On July 20, 2013, an estimated 30,000 protesters assembled and held a peaceful demonstration outside the Ministry of National Defense building. 25,000 citizens bravely marched onto the streets in a subsequent rally on August 3, shaking the very foundation of the 16-year-old military laws governing the armed forces of Taiwan.

Under the night sky, a silver cross formed by the crowd gathered at the front of the presidential palace reflected the citizenry spirit that transcends political differences, awaking freedom, justice, and human rights that have long lain dormant in the nation. A conscious citizenry is exactly the most critical force needed to push Taiwan through the modern era.

Kirby Wu is one of the co-founders of g0v.tw. He is a software engineer and web developer who loves hiking and photography.

In 2012, when the government released an advertisement promoting a new economic initiative, Kirby was dissatisfied with the government’s vague and unclear messages. Frustrated with government's inefficiency and inability to execute policies, he and his friends founded g0v.tw. In December of the same year, the organization launched its first event, named “g0v.tw hackath0n” which attracted more than expected number of participants.

g0v.tw is an online community that advocates information transparency, focusing on developing information platform and tools for the citizens to participate in our society. Substituting the "o" with "0" in gov, the new "g0v" not only stands for rethinking the role that the government plays from the bottom up, but also represents the world view of 0 and 1 in the digital natives generation.

g0v.tw is a platform that is based on open-source spirit which cares about speech freedom and information openness. In addition, it also writes computer codes for the ease of use of information services for the citizens. Information transparency can help the citizens understand its government operation and subjects under discussion more easily and clearly. Thus, information would not be solely controlled by the media and government supervision by its citizens can then be made more effectively. This information-transparency-enabled understanding can be transformed into real action and ultimately strengthen our democratic literacy.

Ten years ago Ty found his true interests in arts & design. He taught himself graphics and video design from online lessons. These eventually led him to “Street Dance” lessons, where he mastered in every street dance competition involved. When Ty went to Australia for a working holiday break, he found time to teach street dance there.

After Ty became a nightclub dancer, he studied performance and audience psychology and attempts to weave innovative discoveries into his dance moves in hopes to unleash his inner creativity. His inspirations comes from everything he sees and hears at nightclubs.

Born in Taipei and raised in Taichung, Anting first came under the spotlight when, in 2008, having taught herself English, she received acceptances to both National Taiwan University and 10 top US colleges. She eventually set off to Princeton University, and published her story in a book titled, “I Boast in my Weakness”.

At Princeton she studied at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, spending extensive time working in Haiti, Cambodia, Ghana, France and Switzerland. She snatched the top thesis prize with her work when she graduated, yet she couldn’t stop wondering: is what I do relevant to where I am from?

Since then, Anting worked at a management consulting firm in New York, while starting a team in Taiwan to experiment with the idea of “Teach for Taiwan” – recruiting college graduates to become quality teachers in communities in need. Now, she is moving back to Taiwan to officially launch the program – and invites you to join her on this next journey along with other “fools” that are dreaming for a generation.

Tommy Chen was the FIRST and the ONLY Taiwanese man to run across seven continents in five years. No matter what conditions he faced,he fearlessly endured, conquering mountains, polar regions, forests, deserts and more. In May of 2013, he was the first Asian, and the youngest athlete to finish the Yukon 700 km Race in Canada.

When confronting harmful race environments, physical pain, hunger and loneliness he sometimes questions his ability during the race. As the race continues throughout the night, darkness surrounds him and thoughts of giving up creep into his mind. However, the constant battle between darkness and his mind makes him stronger. He has always been able to fight until the finish line.

His hard-work does not only show in the race. Before every contest, he travels internationally to places with terrible weather and harsh terrain to train. Additional things for Tommy to overcome are sponsorship and funds. He spends countless hours studying and preparing documents to apply for any possible sponsorship.

In the beginning he didn’t have the support from his family and friends. They even tried to talk him out of walking the path. However, in the end Tommy was able to prove himself with his commitment and discipline.

“Anything and any dream: if you can’t touch your own heart, how can you touch others?” he says.

After all the races he has accomplished, the most important advice he has is to have positive energy. He believes everyone should seek to push their limits and make their dreams come true.

Master Xi-Kun Wang is a second-generation traditional drum maker and the owner of Xiang Ren He Drum Factory. His family has been in this business for more than 80 years, making Xiang Ren He Drum Factory a recognized historical landmark in the Hsin-Chuang region.

In 2002, Master Wang started seeking innovative ways to enrich people’s lives through his drums and through sound therapy. He founded Xiang Ren He Drum Cultural Center, a place for all to learn the art and history behind traditional drum making. Foreign visitors to the annual Hsin-Chuang International Drum Festival are encouraged to visit the Xiang Ren He Drum Cultural Center to understand the background stories of Taiwanese drum.

Master Wang believes that drum making is an artwork that should be preserved to future generations. ”The drum itself is alive because the drumhead was made from a living creature. Through the reuse of the creature's skin, we hope its life would bring the world not only music, but also encouragement and enlightenment to the people. This is our mission.”

In 2009, Xiang Ren He was registered by the Taipei County Government as one of the Taipei County's finest traditional arts. During the same year, Master Wang was awarded the “Taipei County Arborist Traditional Arts Award.” In 2010, he was enlisted as Councilor of Cultural Affairs (CCA) as a Cultural Heritage technology preserver. Currently, he is regarded as a national living treasure of Taiwan.

During his student days, Master Chiu worked as a part-time cartoonist for a newspaper and showed an unusual passion for drawing. He later started to publish his own comic series that vividly captured life of ordinary people and mockingly reflected the society. During the martial law era, his work was so closely scrutinized and inspected by the national publishing agency that there were times he had to be bailed out. After learning that a fellow cartoonist was executed for mocking the military, he decided to quit drawing cartoon.

Even though Master Chiu stopped drawing cartoons, he could not quit his love for drawing. He dabbled in more traditional methods of painting like oil and watercolor, but he was not satisfied. When he saw some workers paving roads in front of his house, he started thinking that “Can I paint with asphalt?” He experimented with the little asphalt he got from the workers, and with the help from his chemical engineer friend, they created a new paint medium.

In 1980, Master Chiu received some criticisms from the local Taiwanese conservative artists as being disrespectful to traditional culture. However, a year later, his works that were exhibited in New York received rave reviews; European and American artists find asphalt paintings extremely fresh and appealing. Master Chiu was invited by the Vatican to demonstrate asphalt painting to the Pope. Even former US president Bill Clinton is a collector of his artwork.

Master Chiu’s passion, persistence and creativity for painting opened up a new sky for his art world.

Master Chang is Ri Xing Type Foundry's CEO. The 60-year-old craftsman has been in the family printing business since the age of 19. He is currently the only person in Taiwan that does typecasting, typesetting, and printing in the traditional way. Master Chang is very familiar with the structure, the character, or the spirit of the Chinese letter, as well as typesetting regular script, the Song typeface, to bold type..

Taiwan's letter-printing industry has seen a sharp recession since 1980s. Till 2008, there were only 4 lead type manufacturers that existed throughout Taiwan. Currently, Ring Xi is the only one remaining. With the future of the type foundry industry so uncertain, Chang is still adamant about keeping the tradition alive.

Nowadays, there is a new trend of reintroducing traditional arts and crafts back to mainstream culture. Master Chang is eager to share the traditional way of printing Chinese characters with all, as it is the easiest way to appreciate the beauty of traditional Chinese characters.

Hong Quan-Rui was born in 1948 into a carpenters’ family in Donggang, Pingtung, Taiwan. When he was 20 years old, he

began to undertake projects such as constructing gigantic wooden fishing boats and making shipping cases. When he

was put in charge of temple design and construction projects, he applied boat-building techniques into the overall design

and woodworks’ construction. He served as a committee member of the Zhenhai (Sea Calming) Temple for years, and

he was also the director of the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute.

He has visited several seafaring nations, gathering information to study both Chinese and Western ships. He has improved

techniques and constructed more than a dozen ancient sailing ship models. He made the ship models one sixtieth of the real

size, and each one of them is in compliance of the navigation standards. The Dragon Boat Floating Restaurant was based on the journey Emperor Yang of Sui took to Jiangnan. Hong

designed and crafted the restaurant on his own, including a cabin with palace style- architecture and full of Chinese

characters.

Later, he applied shipbuilding techniques to the Dragon Racing Boats, and many boats from different cities in Taiwan were designed and made by Hong, including the Dragon Boats displayed in Portland and Washington DC. Hong wishes to

preserve Taiwan’s traditional shipbuilding techniques, and to build Zheng He Treasure Ship Art Museum and the Museum

of Natural Sailing Boats, in order to help the shipbuilding technology to flourish.

A writer-turned choreographer, Lin Hwai-min often draws inspiration from Asian cultures and aesthetics to create works with contemporary resonance. He founded Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan in 1973 and Cloud Gate 2 in 1999, and is currently the artistic director of both companies.

Honoring him with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009, the critics of the International Movimentos Dance Prize in Germany said Lin is“a foremost innovator of dance” and that he “ranks amongst artists of the century such as William Forsythe, George Balanchine, Birgit Cullberg ….”

In July 2013, he received the prestigious Samuel H. Scripps/American Dance Festival Award for Lifetime Achievement. The Festival states that Lin is, “one of the most dynamic and innovative choreographers today … his choreographic brilliance continues to push boundaries and redefine the art form”. Previous awardees include Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, Pina Bausch and William Forsythe. Lin is the first recipient based in Asia. He also served as the author for the 2013 International Dance Day Message.

Lin Hwai-min has received honorary doctorates from six universities in Taiwan and Hong Kong, the John D. Rockefeller 3rd Award, the Distinguished Artist Award from the International Society for the Performing Arts (ISPA), and the Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters from the French Ministry of Culture. Among all the honors Lin has received, the Time Magazine named him in 2005 as one of “Asia’s Heroes”.

Only two months after their establishment, O-Kai Singers managed to take home first place as a dark horse in the national category at the Taiwan International Contemporary A Cappella Festival. Since then they set new records in the Taiwan a cappella scene, winning more than 20 domestic and international awards (the most awarded). They were invited by the top international a cappella groups including The Swingle Singers, The Real Group and The Idea of North to share stage.

They have collaborated with Grammys Award winning musicians to publish their first album O-Kai A Cappella; the album won the award of “Best Jazz Album” for Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards (CARAs) which is the equivalent to Grammys Award in the a cappella world (the first being awarded in Taiwan). They were awarded “Ten Best Albums of 2012” by Chinese Musicians’ Association (Taiwan). Breaking the Golden Melody Awards record, their first album won three awards of “Best Singing Group”, “Best Aboriginal Album”, and “Special Jury Prize” for the 24th Golden Melody Awards while being nominated “Best New Singer”, “Best Album Producer Prize” and “Best Music Composer Prize” (What’s worth noting is that the “Special Jury Prize” was not awarded to anyone four out of the seven years since its establishment. Winning this prize with the first album was literally unheard of.)

Yi Lin is a graduate of National Taiwan Normal University. In her senior year of college, Yi sensed the untidiness found on Taiwan beachfronts from the items that were washed ashore. In the same year, she founded the "Formosa Beachfront Cleanup Crew", whose mission is to host clean up events along many of the Taiwan beaches. "Formosa Beachfront Cleanup Crew" has already held more than 10 clean up events around Taiwan, with involvement over 1,000 people. Yi hopes that this small action of hers will help create a larger movement to stop littering in the ocean.

Duncan was diagnosed with a rare congential bone disorder at birth. When he was four years old, the disease began to consume him and he was forced to withdraw from school at the age of eight. His supposedly elementary school years were replaced by countless trips to the hospital for surgeries and treatments. When Duncan turned 18, he suffered a bone fracture accident that forced him to be bedridden for the next five years.

When Duncan turned 23, he decided to set himself free by undergoing leg amuptation surgery. After this surgery, he was able to leave his bed and lead a normal life.At age 25, Duncan joined a church choir and found his gift for singing. His first live performance was in the Taipei Fubon Bank Artistic Award for Disabled Talents. Duncan won second place in the First Annual Wan Hai Charity Foundation Talent Competition for Disabled. Taiwan's Ministry of Culture (Republic of China) also presented Duncan with the Award for Excellence in the 10th Literary and Artistic Award for Disabled Talents.

Duncan is currently a singer, performer, and a life coach. He serves as the ambassador for Taiwan Foundation for Rare Disorders. He shares his life story with folks all over Taiwan.
