Jurnal ini terbit dua kali setahun, yaitu pada bulan Januari dan Juli. Jurnal ini berisi artikel tulisan
ilmiah dalam bentuk pcnelitian, kajian analisis, aplikasi teori, dan pembahasan tentang berbagai
masalah yang berkaitan dengan bidang ilmu-ilmu Linguistik, Sosial dan Humaniora. Jurnal ini
mengambii nama TEXTURA, yang diambil dari bahasa Latin yang bermakna struktur, jaringan,
dan bahasa, dengan pemahaman bahwa bahasa dalam arti luas adalah sangat beragam, berstruktur,
tetapi juga saling tcrkait, saling terhubung, membentuk jaringan yang padu. Semangat inilah yang
menjadi landasan terbitnya jurnal ilmiah ini, agar semua pihak, para cendekiawan, staf pengajar,
mahasiswa, dan pemerhati kajian bidang ilmu Linguistik dan Pengajaran Bahasa dapat saling
berbagi dan berinteraksi, agar dapat meningkatkan kuantitas, kualitas, dan penyebarluasan kajian
diatas.

FLOOD DISASTERS IN MALAYSIA: THE PSYCHOSOCIAL ISSUES AND
INTERVENTION

ABSTRACT
Flood disasters are stressful and troubling because it forces people to confront their vulnerabilities and crises situation. Flood disasters often lead to high levels of collectives stress as they are very limited resources during the crisis situation. Regardless of the level of injury or loss experienced, most of the time people in the affected area will face a certain amount of emotional distress and anxiety. Some may have lost spouses, children, parents or others family members or friends. The scenario of being homeless and jobless, with no proper psychological care, can at times lead victim into depression. Continuous traumatic situation in flood disaster situation may results in psychological disorders that could be manifest in different forms which subsequently affect the lives of the victim. As a consequence, people might feel a great sense of helplessness and experiencing psychological trauma in addition to the severe physical damages. In the first instance, the victims need medical treatment, emergency safety, shelter, food and drinking water as well as financial assistance. However people can develop psychological problem following such traumatic events that need other form of psychological intervention. This paper will analyse the concept ofpsychosocial interventions from a various social work perspectives in order to address the psychosocial issues among the victims of flood disasters in Malaysia.

Introduction
United Nation International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR, 2009) defined disasters as a serious disruption of the functioning of society, causing widespread human, material or environmental losses which exceed the ability of the affected society to cope using its own resources. Soliman and Rogge (2002) mentioned that disasters as an events that disable community social functioning. This is because during disasters, individual, families, and communities suffer from trauma, stress and debilitation in every dimension of their daily lives from the loss of life and health, community infrastructure, property, jobs, personal belongings and social ties. This required external assistance for response and recovery which have emotional and psychological effects, and it also require reconstruction of shattered lives and built environment. Since this paper will discuss disasters issues based on Malaysia
perspective, thus according to Malaysian National Security Council, Direction No. 20, disasters is defined as an incident that occurs in a sudden manner, complex in nature, resulting in the loss of lives, damages to property or the environment as well as affecting the daily activities of local community. Such incident requires the handling of resources, equipment, frequency and extensive manpower from various agencies as well as effective coordination and the possibility of demanding complex actions over a long period of time.
Yodmani (2001) stated that there are two types of disasters and it could be categorized under natural and technological disaster or also known as man-made event. Generally, natural disasters are linked ciosely with environmental concerns and can be categorized into four events which are geophysical events such as earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions; meteorological events such as cyclonic
