1. 21st Century “Maritime Silk Road” strategy overview

21st Century “Maritime Silk Road” is an important strategic

idea that was purposed by President Xi Jinping during his visits

to Southeast Asian countries in October, 2013.

Cooperation Priorities ： policy coordination, facilities

connectivity, unimpeded trade, financial integration and

people-to-people bonds (五通: five major goals).

Basic framework : to enhance areas of cooperation between the

countries among 21st Century “Maritime Silk Road” such asthe interconnection (互联互通) and free trade etc.

Since 2013, China has become Thailand's largest trading partner.

Investment relation between Thailand and China

As of first quarter of 2015, Thailand cumulative direct

investment in China is about 4.12 billion USD, accounted for

5.45% of Thailand total direct investment.

According to Thailand’s Board of Investment (BOI), 2015 (Jan.-

Apr.) Chinese enterprises that submit application for investment

promotion have 12 projects, investment amounts is 1.957 billionTHB.

3.1) 4 Pilot Free Trade Zones established by Chinese Government

will play an important role in the building of 21st Century

“Maritime Silk Road”, and will bring about prospective economic

and trade opportunities between Thailand and China

3.2) Upgrading CAFTA (The China-ASEAN Free Trade Area),

encouraging the trade development opportunities between

Thailand and China, moving forward the building of 21st Century

“Maritime Silk Road”.

3.3) Constructing railroad connecting Thailand with China, constructing Asian

Connectivity system, improving Thailand transportation infrastructures,

improving logistics efficiency, building the trade development opportunities

between Thailand and China

3.4) The founding of Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank will be

Thailand’s new funding source.

3.5) RCEP (Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership) will

encourage progress of the economic integration in the region and

will encourage the economic and trade relations between Thailand

and China.

4. Suggestions on how to develop Thailand and China

trade cooperation based on 21st Century “Maritime

Silk Road”

Working on Thailand Trade deficit with China and encouraging

trade development between the two countries.

Thai Government will play an active role in resolving the

conflict in South China Sea.

Improving land, air and maritime transportation system.
