TTHEHE EEDITORDITOR’’SS MMUSINGSUSINGSI am writing this from a smokey barin Sturgis, SD. No, I'm not aHarley guy...Kristin and the in-lawsdragged me out here to see Mt.Rushmore, etc. A week after thebig Harley rally there are still quitea few bikers in the area. Seeing somany people passionate about theirmotorsports hobby makes me long
for the racetrack and the cama-raderie of my fellow Porsche enthu-siasts. I've also had some time toreflect on my progress as a Porschedriver. It's bitter sweet, really. I'vegotten pretty good, but still have along way to go before I'm drivingmy car as fast as it can go. Lookslike I'll get two more chances to
improve my skills this year. I can'twait for the Pueblo race. After that,I'll have a tough decision to make:either go the PCA event in SaltLake or stay local and try anotherrace closer to home. I suppose Ishould consider myself lucky tohave such a dilemma!

Well readers, the moment is nearly upon us. The Rocky Mountain Region's signature event, the National Club Race and Super DE willtake place September 14th, 15th, and 16th. Things are really shaping up to make this year's race at Pueblo a truly special weekend forall the drivers. Speaking of Pueblo, this could be our last race at that venue. Our new track, High Plains Raceway, will hopefully beoperating at full tilt come next September. Which reminds me, the new track cannot happen without your help. Please, please donatethe equivalent of at least one weekend's cost of a driving event to the fund. Factor in event entry fee, tires, fuel, lodging, you know thedrill. The approvals have been granted and with all of our help work will start yet this fall on creating what will truly be a great venuefor drivers. More information is available at www.HighPlainsRaceway.com.
It is worth mentioning that our club race absolutely could not take place without the considerable help of our sponsors. These business-es have stepped up and donated cash, prizes, and services to help make this event a success. Please show your appreciation by givingthem your business.

We also still need a few volunteers to help out over the weekend. It is a great way to get close to the action. Please come down andlend a hand. Contact me or any of the club race committee members.
Before I go back out and crawl under my car for the last few hours of race prep, I wanted to mention that the cost of 80's Porsches hasnow dropped to the point where anyone considering building a track car can pick up a normally-aspirated 944 for as little as $1,500.911's of the SC variety can be purchased for around $7,000 and up. A lively discussion on the RMR Yahoo group on this very subjectattracted a lot of input from quite a few members recently. It is a great way to try out high performance driving without subjecting yournicer Porsche to the rigors of track work. With a minimum of changes, such as shock and suspension upgrades, these older cars can bebrought to a condition where they will be really fun to take to a DE and still serve as a daily driver if you wish. I've even noticed thatthe V-8 powered 928's are getting really affordable. Of course, everyone to whom I mention this idea thinks I've really lost it. But these

are sturdy, albeit heavy, 300+ horsepower cars with good brakes, modern suspension, and easy-shifting transmissions. Sure they weighover 3000 lbs. but so does a Camaro or Mustang. Folks seem to have fun driving those on track. So why not a 928? I've seen severalconverted to Club Racers and the one I saw most recently at Sebring made the most wonderful sound and was surprisingly competitive.Think of it as a 944 with both halves of the engine, since to create the 4-cylinder for the 944, all Porsche did was slice four cylinders offthe 928 engine!
Not to revisit another wacky car thing that I wrote about last month, but space constraints precluded publishing the photos from ourCarhenge visit. My words simply did not do the place justice so here are the pictures to complete the story.
See you at the Club Race!
