Tokyo Embassy Choir has an illustrious history. Formed as the Ichibancho Singers in the late 1980s by Sir Stephen Gomersall (British Ambassador to Japan 1999-2004), the choir was taken on by Sir John Boyd (British Ambassador to Japan, 1992-1996) and became known as the British Embassy Choir. Since then, the choir has spread its wings far beyond the serene surroundings of the British mission in Ichiban-cho to become one of the most successful international choirs in Tokyo under the baton of Principal Conductor Steven Morgan. It is a “pro-am” choir: many of its members have a formal music background. The choir has put on a great variety of concerts – everything from Bach to Broadway – and has raised money for many different charities along the way.

Tokyo Embassy Choirは、1980年代に「一番町シンガーズ」の名で、サー・スティー

ブン・ゴマソール氏（後の駐日英国大使/1999年～2004年）により創設された。ゴマ

ソール氏離日後、サー・ジョン・ボイド(駐日英国大使/1992～1996)のもとで発展し、

British Embassy Choir として知られるようになる。以来成長を遂げる中で、一番町

の静穏な英国大使館の敷地を離れ、現在はスティーブン・モーガン指揮の下、東京を

代表する国際的な合唱団として活動している。グループはアマチュアであるものの、

正式な音楽教育を受けた団員が多数在籍している。宗教曲からブロードウェイ・ナン

バーまで、多彩なレパートリーでコンサートを開催し、その都度さまざまなチャリテ

ィー団体を支援するための募金を行っている。

The Christian Academy in Japan Singers, which has a 30-year history and is currently under the direction of Scott Ponzani, is an auditioned ensemble of talented and dedicated high school students. They perform a variety of sacred and secular repertoire in various languages, including works from ecclesiastical and classical literature, folk songs from countries of the world, and contemporary choral pieces. Christian Academy in Japan is proud to have quality programs in the musical, dramatic and visual arts. Founded in 1950 and located in the city of Higashi Kurume in western Tokyo, the school educates the children of Christian missionaries, expatriates and Japanese citizens. The 450 students (kindergarten to 12th grade) and nearly 100 staff members come from many countries around the world.

クリスチャン・アカデミー・イン・ジャパン(CAJ)は東久留米にある学校

で、1950 年に設立された。CAJ は、クリスチャン宣教師の子弟、日本に

仕事のため滞在している外国人の子弟、そして日本のご家庭の子弟を教

育する学校で、生徒数は 450人（キンダーガーテンから 12年生まで）、

教職員は 100 人弱、世界中たくさんの国の人々が集まっている。私たち

は、CAJ が質の高い音楽、演劇、ビジュアルアーツプログラムを持って

いると自負している。CAJの室内合唱団は 30年の歴史を持ち、現在はス

コット・ポンザーニが指揮をしている。合唱団のメンバーはオーディシ

ョンを経て選ばれた、才能のある熱心な高校生たち。レパートリーは宗

教的または非宗教的と様々で、宗教的な作品、クラッシック文学からの

作品、世界中のフォークソング、また現代的なコーラスを幅広く歌って

いる。

Steven Morgan conductorDr. Steven Morgan has served as Artistic Director and

Principal Conductor of the choir since 1998. His musical career

spans nearly five decades and includes conducting choral

ensembles in Illinois, Minnesota, British Columbia and Japan.

Since coming to Tokyo in 1995 he has taught both English and

music classes at a number of universities in the greater Tokyo

area. He has also served as Director of Music at St. Alban's

Anglican Church (2001-2010), as Visiting Lecturer in Sacred

Music at Tohoku Gakuin University in Sendai (2007-2008) and

as conductor of the Chiba International Singers (2010-present).

In 2012 he helped form the Tokyo International Children’ s

Choir.

Dr. Morgan is a founding member of the Rikkyo Institute of

Church Music and served as core music faculty member in

Rikkyo University's Graduate School of Christian Studies from

2009-2014. This spring Dr. Morgan joined the World Language

Center and Graduate School of Letters of Soka University in

Tokyo, where he teaches in the MA program in Second

Language Education.

Dr. Morgan also composes music for chorus and orchestra, with

major works including Magnificat (2007), Sounds of the Winter

(2007) and In pace: A Requiem of Peace (2011) which had its

world premiere in Tokyo in 2011 and its North American

premiere in Denver, Colorado in 2012. He premiered a new

composition for chorus, soloists and chamber orchestra entitled

Seven Last Words on poems by Mark Strand in Denver in

April, 2015.

Scott Ponzani conductorScott Ponzani is in his second year as choral director at

Christian Academy in Japan. He graduated from Ohio Wesleyan

University with a Bachelor of Music degree and earned a

Master of Arts degree in choral music from Eastern Michigan

University. Scott taught elementary and middle school music in

Michigan for ten years before moving to Tokyo. Scott serves as

choirmaster and music director at St . Alban 's

Anglican/Episcopal Church in Minato-ku. He has also

conducted, accompanied, and composed for other choirs and has

accompanied the Kanto Plain International Honor Choir. Active

in playing and conducting handbells, Scott is the founder and

director of the Christian Academy in Japan Handbell

Ensembles. He continues his music studies in the US and the

UK.

Dr. スティーブン・モーガンは1998年より当団の音楽監督

を務めている。幼少より半世紀に亘る音楽歴を持ち、指揮

者としては、米国イリノイ州、ミネソタ州、カナダ・ブリティッ

シュコロンビア州、そして日本で活躍。1995年に来日後、

東京近郊の諸大学で英語と音楽の教鞭を執る傍ら、東京・

聖オルバン教会音楽監督（2001-2010）、東北学院大学客

員教授（宗教音楽2007-2008）を歴任、2010年より千葉イン

ターナショナルシンガーズ常任指揮者。また2012年にはTo

kyo International Children’s Choirの発足に関わり、初代

指揮者を務めた。

立教大学教会音楽研究所の設立メンバーであり、立教大

学大学院キリスト教学研究科に中核教員として在籍（2009

-2014）。昨年４月からは創価大学ワールドランゲージセン

ター及び大学院文学研究科において、第二言語教育（ES

L）の修士コースを指導している。

合唱音楽の作曲にも力を注ぎ、以下の代表作がある。「マ

ニフィカート」（2007）、「Sounds of the Winter」（2007）、「イ

ン・パーチェ～平和のレクイエム」（2011/初演：2011年東

京、北米初演：2012年コロラド州デンヴァー）。 マーク・ス

トランドの詩による新作「Seven Last Words」（合唱・独唱・

室内管弦楽）は、2015年4月、デンヴァーで初演された。

スコット・ポンザーニはクリスチャン・アカデミー・イン・ジャパ

ンの合唱部のディレクターとして今年で2年目を迎えている。

ポンザーニはオハイオ・ウェスリン大学を音楽学士として卒

業し、イースタン・ミシガン大学で合唱音楽の修士号を取得

した。東京に住む以前の１０年間はミシガン州の小中学校で

音楽を指導していた。ポンザーニは、港区にある聖オルバ

ン教会で聖歌隊指揮者として、また音楽ディレクターとして

奉仕している。その他にも様々な合唱団の指揮や伴奏を務

め、作曲もし、関東プレーン・インターナショナル・オナー・ク

ワイアーの伴奏も務めたことがある。ハンドベルを自ら演奏

するだけでなく指導もしており、クリスチャン・アカデミー・イ

ン・ジャパンのハンドベル部の設立者でもある。音楽の勉強

を今日もアメリカとイギリスで続けている。
