S s Bellville-slangred-der Shaun MacLeod, nadatn Kaapse kobra onlangs byn huis in De Bron opge-merk is.

Dt dien as waarskuwing virn mens.

Three laptops, two Blackberry cellphones anda handbag containing cash were stolen in a rob-bery in which a resident was threatened witha screwdriver.

The incident took place in Blanc de NoirStreet in Oude Westhof on Friday 23 March be-tween 00:30 and 03:30. Two males, wearing bala-clavas, entered the house through the bath-room window. They threatened the residentwith a screwdriver before fleeing with hisproperty.

The men fled the scene by foot and no arrestwas made.

After much frustration, neighbours of anotorious property in Stellenberg havesomething to look forward to.

Kathy Badenhorst, Delwyn Crescent resi-dent and the next-door neighbour to the di-lapidated house, says their problems startedfive years ago when the house was occupiedby tenants who were involved with drugs.

A court ruling ensured these residentswere removed from the property at the startof 2008, but problems at the house persisted.

Two years ago, the house was sold to a dif-ferent owner and the neighbours thoughtthey could finally see the light.

But the empty house attracted vagrants, and the problems started again.

One homeless man in particular was a rea-son for concern to other residents of the area.

This man was mentally ill and believedit was his home. He used to steal items fromneighbouring gardens to make it his home,Kathy says.

At one stage he took home a whole lot offood, but as it was left unrefrigerated, thiscaused an unbearable stench.

There was also a time when taps were leftrunning by vagrants, flooding the property.

The roots of a large tree on the propertyalso uprooted a neighbours swimming poolbehind the property.

Dilapidated wooden gates in front of theproperty is an eyesore and Kathy says fac-tors such as these devaluate other propertiesin the street.

In response, the owner of the property,Jimmy Brink, a businessman from Parowwho bought the house approximately a yearago, said restoration of the house will soonstart.

He said because the house was vacant forsuch a long period, it was seriously vandal-ised and all geysers and taps were stolen.

I need to replace the roof first before wecan reconnect the electricity, Jimmy said, adding they planned to start building on theproperty as soon as the electricity has beenreconnected.

He said two weeks ago a municipal inspec-tor visited the property and was satisfiedwith the current situation.

All the doors were locked from the insideand unwanted elements no longer have ac-cess to the property, he said.

In response Charles Cooper, City of CapeTown spokesman, said the house was de-clared a problem building in February. Hesaid the city visited the house and that Brinkensured them all matters of concern will bedealt with during the renovation process.

Five weeks after old paving on thepavement of Van der Stel Streetwas removed and replaced, Rod-ney Schiel is at his wits end tryingto have the mess cleared.

All the rubble that was re-moved, as well as the excess newtar the workers didnt use was leftunattended, says Rodney.

Schiel saw the team offloadingthe excess new tar from the vehi-cle on the last day of the projectand assumed they were to return

to the area to clear this, but fiveweeks down the line, the old rub-ble and excess tar still remains inheaps on the pavement.

Schiel has contacted the City ofCape Town and was promised thissituation would be reported to theillegal dumping and roads depart-ments, but to date, nothing hascome of it.

Schiel said following up on con-tractors jobs was important.

The fact that a contractor ishired and paid for the work he did,but no one visits the area for in-

spection is of concern, he said. The City of Cape Town apolo-

gised for not attending to the mat-ter earlier. Kylie Hatton, MediaManager, said the rehabilitationof the sidewalk was part of theRoads and Stormwater Depart-ments ongoing maintenance pro-gramme. Following the media en-quiry the contractor has been in-structed to clear the site.

We assure residents that ap-propriate action has been taken toprevent errors of thisnature in thefuture.

(of selfs my ma se Duitse Herdershond aante vat as hy te naby my verbyskuur).

tuindienste of n familielid is wathulle laat uitkom nie, vind hullen stukkie sagte sand by die hekwaarhullemaklik n gatnet grootgenoeg vir hulle twee, onderdeurkan grawe.

Research has shown that thosewho vandalise municipal prop-erty are youths between 14 and20 and everybodys help is need-ed to root out this problem.

Alderman James Vos, chairmanof Subcouncil 3 said on Thursday 22March that repair and replacementof the signs is extremely costly.

I recently undertook an inspec-tion of all the road signs and otherimportant signage applicable to pe-destrian safety and was shocked atthe defacement, Vos said.

This followed a number of inci-

dents reported to his office duringthe course of the month.

This degrades the environment, creates the perception that mattersare out of control and as a result thevalues of homes and businesses de-teriorate.

He called on parents, teachers, youth leaders and the youth to as-sist the city in this regard.

He said he was convinced thatthis was nothing other than vandal-ism.

Council cannot solve this socialproblem in isolation, he said.

He said damaging municipalproperty is a serious criminal of-fence and that matters were wors-

ened by people stealing the signs forscrap metal.

Vos urged people to phone the po-lice or Metro Police with any infor-mation.

All reports will be treated confi-dentially and even anonymous re-ports will be welcomed, he said.

Vos stressed that assistance wasdesperately needed in providingthem with information which couldlead to the conviction of those re-sponsible for the destructive, de-plorable and totally unnecessarydamage to municipal property.

Report missing or damaged roadsignage to the citys call centre on0860 10 30 54.

Focused input is necessary to ensuremechanisms are put in place to clearstormwater channels of overgrowth.

So said subcouncil 3 chairman James Vos.Vos was speaking at the latest subcouncil

meeting last week.He added that parks had to be mowed and

overhanging tree branches were to be cut.

All our roads and stormwater gulliesmust be cleaned of weeds and litter, and ourdrain inlets cleared to prevent the potential-ly dangerous situation of flooded roads.

He asked the subcouncil manager to obtainschedules and reports from the departmentsresponsible for area cleaning as well as theone responsible for roads and stormwater, outlining their duties and plans of action ap-plicable to Subcouncil 3 wards.

Vos said regular cleaning and clearing of

stormwater drains has been done for manyyears prior to the onset of the rainy season.

The reality is that many tree roots haveinvaded the storm water systems and fallenleaves and pine needles further exacerbatethe problem.

These must be cleared before winter toprevent total chaos on our roads, Vos stated, adding that all responsible departmentsmust have the necessary mechanisms inplace for winter readiness.

Robin Carlisle, the minister of transportand public works in the Western CapelastweeksaidhewantsMetrorail toad-just its planned fare increase from thetotally unacceptable 27 percent plannedfor 1 April, to a single digit figure.

Although there had been no increases infares from 2003 and 2010, Metrorailsplanned 27 percent increase for this yearadded to 2011s 33 percent increase, meansthere would be an effective 60 percent risein fares in just two years.

This increase is totally unacceptable forthe following reasons, which I have dis-cussed with Metrorails Western Cape re-gional manager Mthura Swartz, the minis-ter said.

These include the continuing extremelypoor service of Metrorail.

Instead of these huge ad hoc increasesthere should be a small increase each year, not greater than the inflation rate.

It appears that there is no end in sightto the indignities inflicted on Metrorail cus-tomers, who for years have borne the bruntof bad planning and a lack of investment inrolling stock, Carlisle said.

Metro Policedeserve creditThis newspaper receives spin stories ona daily basis, always positive news aboutthis and that companys success, blah blahblah. To put a positive spin on every eventis what a PR company is paid to do.

They also get kudos if the press releaseis printed as is, without the journalist ask-ing pertinent questions or double check-ing the statistics.

Sadly, we live in a world where deskjockeys have taken over the media land-scape. Its so much easier to simply copyand paste than to go out there and get thereal story. Part of our job is to sift throughthese spin stories, separate the wheatfrom the chaff.

The Metro Police are excellent in send-ing out press releases of recent successes. The one that landed in Mondays inboxwas about them having arrested 34 peopleover the weekend for a myriad of offences, including drug possession and drunk driv-ing.

Theyre doing their job, thats for sure. And then they get flak from the public.Flak for making them late, for inconven-iencing them. The same people enjoy liv-ing in relative peace, hoping the police areout there doing their job.

Its time to make a mindshift and givethe Metro Police the credit they deserve. So next time you get stopped at a road-block, adjust your attitude while you wait.

So twee weke gelede op pad stad toe, woudie deure by elke tweede stasie nie oopmaak

nie.

    MEV. BURGERE-posMetrorail se Wes-Kaapse streeksbe-

stuurder, Mthura Swartz, antwoord soosvolg: Ek bedank mev. Burger vir haar eerliketerugvoering oor haar onlangse ondervin-ding. Ons pendelaars is uiters belangrik. Is city accountable? The public was advised via a press noticethat the City of Cape Town was consideringthe rezoning of part of the vineyards border-ing Jip de Jager Drive extension. What is be-ing considered is the change in status ofthe land from High Potential and UniqueAgricultural to Urban Development.

This rezoning involves an adjustment tothe urban edge. The advert refers to urbandevelopment but doesnt tell us whetherthis is residential, commercial or industrial single residential properties or 20-storeyblocks of flats.

It doesnt specify if this land is intendedto be used for a regional shopping centre,or a light industrial zone. If, as a member ofthe public, you are aware that these ervenare the subject of another application by theproperty owner you would be aware thatthey are intended to be used for office blocksand houses but perhaps the city and the de-veloper have new plans? We are not told.

The city has a spatial development policythat is the result of exhaustive public partici-pation. This framework contains many

statements supporting the limitation of ur-ban sprawl, the protection of the urban edge, the importance of sensitive treatment of theurban/ rural boundary, egProtecting natu-ral areas such as the Durbanville Hills agri-cultural area from large scale urban develop-ment and No further extension of the busi-ness node towards the north is supported(referring to Willowbridge). What is beingconsidered is a radical departure from this, and surely then must be based on a criticalrequirement.

The justification should be something vi-tal to the public welfare. Unfortunately thecity is apparently neither required by lawnor motivated by considerations of public in-terest to provide us, the ratepayers and resi-dents, with any justification at all.

Is this in line with the DAs commitmentto accountable government outlined in theirIntegrated Development Plan? The answerhas to be no!

    payers Association

Why are traffic officers issuing trafficfines to Joe Public during morning peakhours? The slow traffic flow is horrendouson Fairtrees Road, especially where itcrosses with Eversdal Road in Durban-ville.

Yet on more than four occasions I havenoticed how traffic officers park their ve-hicles illegally (on island at traffic lightas well as on the verge of Fairtrees Roadwhere it links up with De Bron Road),blocking the free flow of traffic.

Then they pull over suspicious driv-ers and cars, who now also have to parkon the verge, further disrupting traffic.

A couple of years ago a Good Samaritanreceived a hefty fine, when he stopped ata similar spot to offer me a lift, because, according to the cop, it was illegal to stopon the verge of the road where part of thevehicle protrudes on the yellow line or isa danger to other road users.

Needless to say I paid half of the fine. Why should it be right for them to park

where they want to, though there is no ap-parent accident or emergency, but itwould be wrong for others?

Why cant they do something to im-prove the traffic flow and not further frus-trate road uses already stuck in traffic?

Who benefits from their actions? Is itnot their duty to serve and not irritate?

    FERNANDODurbanvilleMaxine Jordaan, spokesperson for

traffic services: The City of Cape Townstraffic officers issue traffic fines to offend-ers at all times of the day, irrespective ofwhether it is peak hour or not, as motoristsdont only commit violations in off-peak pe-riods. Traffic officers can and will stop andor park their vehicle at any place where itis safe to do so in order to execute their du-ties. However, they must ensure that theydo not cause more of an obstruction whendoing so. We do find, on occasions, that atsome locations there is likely to be a nomi-nal amount of obstruction caused. But,then it is necessary to do so and the neces-sary precautions will be taken. All road us-ers at all hours benefit from traffic services for example if a taxi driver is charged forinconsiderate driving he receives the pun-ishment suited for the violation. The motor-ists and pedestrians whose lives was orcould have been in danger are protected.

The Fairmont Interact Club has wonR15 000 for Best Team Spirit at the Tyger-bear fundraiser event hosted by Tyger-valley Centre.

The money will be used to sponsor moreoutreach programmes.

This year alone on two consecutive Tues-day afternoons, Interactors made 30 loavesof bread into 540 sandwiches.

All the sandwiches were dropped off at anight shelter to feed homeless people.

A number of visits were organised to otherorganisations such as the Malachai Place ofSafety in Richwood for babies and childrenunder the age of six who were removed fromtheir homes by the authorities.

They also visited the Ubuntu House inGoodwood, a halfway house for babies be-fore they are adopted, and the Christine Rev-ell Childrens Home in Athlone, a home to60 children, babies and toddlers.

The members of the Interact Club have fedbabies and toddlers, changed nappies, burped them, wiped away the tears and run-ny noses, put them to sleep and played withthem.

At their recent inaugural service week-end, child abuse was highlighted and posterswere made for a campaign to highlight this.

The members collected and packaged sur-vival packs of deodorant, a facecloth and en-

ergy bar for abused children and women tobe distributed to the victims at police sta-tions when they come to report this type ofcrime.

A highlight on their busy schedule was avisit to the Uitsig Animal Rescue Centre out-side Durbanville, where they took the dogson their weekly walk, helped to dip them, and played with them.

Enige meubelstuk wat iets anders is asdie gewone, trek my aandag, s Michelle.

Christo van der Walt, voorsitter vandie Alta du Toit-sentrum se beheerliggaam,by n bedankingsgeleentheid vir betrokke-nes by di sentrum se onlangse kermis.
