Ruyterwacht. “Die gat in die Elsieskraal-ka-naal is reeds ’n geruime tyddaar endie vreesbestaan dat as die wintermaande kom, gaandie water die gat groter maak. Dit kan daar-toe lei dat die kanaal heeltemal verwoesword,” sê Chadow.Hy sê as die kanaal sodanig beskadigword
dat dit niemeer diewater binne kanhounie,kan dit groot ontwrigting vir die gemeen-skap veroorsaak. “Inwoners van Ruyter-wacht gebruik die brug oor die kanaal omby hul werkplekke en winkels in Voortrek-kerweg te kom en skoolkinders kom oor diekanaal skool toe. As die walle oorstroom,gaan dit beteken ’n groot gedeelte van die ge-meenskap sal verontrief word of hulself ingevaarlike situasies bevind,” sê Chadow.Faizel Adams, lid van die gemeenskap, sê

daar is reeds begroot omdit reg temaak.Onskan nie toelaat dat dit enigsins groter worden sodoende die eiendom of lewens van in-woners bedreig nie. Die instandhouding enbeskerming van infrastruktuur is een vanons grootste prioriteite,” sê Britz.Volgens hom gaan daar probeer word om
die gat so gou moontlik toe te kry.“Die winter is om die draai en die ideaal

Net gedurende die 18 maande wat hy indie weermag was, het Gerald Malher-be nie in die huis in Miltonstraat in
Goodwood gewoon nie.Die huis, wat eens aan sy ouers behoort
het, is een van die laaste sinkhuise in diésnelgroeiende voorstad. In die afgelope 49jaar het Gerald alles sien verander, behalwehul huis. “Die huis lyk nog net soos hy gelykhet toe ek gebore is,” sê Gerald.Hy beduiemet sy handena plekkewat ver-
ander het sedert hy ’n kind was.“Daar oorkant was ’n kleinhoewe. Doer
was die bioscope; daai mense daar het bokkeen goed aangehou. Ons het in vrede gelewe– alle rasse saam. Aan daai kant het ’n Mos-lem-antie gebly. Waar die Goodwood-rugby-klub nou is, was ’n vlei waar ons as kinderskano’s gebou het. Dit was lekker jare.”
Stokke en klippe“Hier was ook gangsters, maar nie soos
vandag se gangsters nie. Hulle het nog metstokke en klippe baklei en nie met guns nie.As ons na die babbie se winkel gegaan het,het die gangsters ons sommer ge-escort.”Sy 70-jarige broer, Anthony, verskyn in
die deur agterhomensê: “Vertel hom ’nbiet-jie van die moordenaar.”Gerald kyk sy broer agterna, huiwer ’n
oomblik, maar besluit tog om te vertel.“Sy naam was Dickie. Hy het gesmokkel
daar in die vlei. Dickie, ja, ek sal nooit daainaam vergeet nie. Hy was nie eintlik jou ti-piese moordenaar nie. Jy sien ’n ander ouhet by Dickie dop op skuld gekoop. Die ouhet by die slagter gewerk en Dickie het sygeld gaan soek.”

Dickie gesê hy moet vleis steel by sy baas.Die ou wou nie en hulle het baklei. Ja, ouDickie het hom dood gesteek. So, ou Dickiewas die eerste moordenaar hier rond. Ek salnooit daai naam vergeet nie...”Die gedagte aan die dood laat Gerald in die
verte tuur. “My suster het ook hier by myen Anthony gebly. Sy is twee weke gelededood. Ons sort nog die goed uit en so aan.“Ja, ons was net die drie kinders. Ons was
maar arm, my pa het op die spoorweë ge-werk. Ek het darem vir ’n elektrisiën geleer,maar ek kry nie werk nie.”Moderne motors ry in Miltonstraat verby

Daar is ’n reuse-gat in die muur van dieGoodwood-rugbyklub nadat iemand met ’nmotor deur dit gejaag het. Nou word dit asdeurloopplek gebruik.Die ongeluk het reeds ’n week gelede
plaasgevind, maar steeds is die gat daar.Volgens Arthur Reichhardt, wat ook by
die klub betrokke is, blyk dit of ’n groepvroue in die motor was. “Ek kan dit nie be-vestig nie, maar gerugte wil dit hê dat dievroue onder mekaar gestry het voor die on-geluk plaasgevind het,” sê Reichhardt.Lynne du Toit, bestuurder by die rugby-
klub, sê die gat in diemuur skep grootskaal-se probleme vir hulle.“Ons hou gewoonlik die hekke toe, maar
met ’n gat in die muur is dit moeilik om toe-gangsbeheer toe te pas. Mense gebruik ooknou die gat as deurgang en dit kan daartoelei dat infrastruktuur beskadigword. Tot ophede het nog niks gebeur nie, maar asenigiemand net toegang tot ’n perseel kry,is die kanse goed dat iets gesteel of beskadiggaan word,” sê Du Toit. On Monday 6 April Goodwood Police arre-sted a 29-year-old suspect for housebrea-king.At about 03:10, Constable Marco Solomon
reacted to a housebreaking in progress in
Goulburn Street.On his arrival, Solomon saw the lock to
the garage doorwas cut. He searched the ga-rage and found the suspect hiding behind atool cabinet.
The house was a target of housebreakersin the past week. On Friday 3 April the hou-se was broken into and a TV was stolen.Goodwood police hope to link the suspect
to the previous housebreaking too.

Die veelbesproke hardeware-winkel by dieBothasig-sentrum het uiteindelik sy deureoopgemaak.
Sommige inwoners van Bothasig was ge-kant teen die ontwikkeling van Build It om-dathulle geglohet diewinkelmaak inbreukop winkels wat jare reeds daar sake doen.
Ander het ’n probleem gehad oor diemoontlike geraasbesoedeling wat vragmo-tors, wat materiaal aflaai, gaan veroorsaak.Van die ondernemings wat reeds dekadeslank sake doen, moes ook weer om hulhuurkontrakte aansoek doen.
Vandeesweek is die deure van Build It eg-ter met groot fanfare oopgemaak.
Volgens die sentrumbestuur was die ont-wikkeling daarop gemik om die gemeen-skap beter te dien en om geen ander redenie. “Die sentrum is in die tagtigs gebou enhet oor die dekades konstant handel gedryfen gegroei. Ons verstaan egter die veroude-ringsproses en dat winkelsentrums opge-gradeer moet word om by moderne stan-daarde te hou,” sê Vanessa McIntyre na-mens die Blend Property Group, wat diesentrum besit. Volgens haar was daar geengrootskaalse ontwrigting vir bestaandewinkels nie. “Bothasig-apteek, Spice for Li-fe en Barksole Bothasig moes skuif. Daarhet ook nuwe winkels soos Jacky’s ChineseRestaurant, Sam & Sam Hair, Nail Studioen Barbers Range Barber Shop oopge-
maak,” sê McIntyre.John de Smidt, eienaar van die vorige
hardeware-winkel by die sentrum, Pick ’nFix, is aangestel as die nuwe bestuurdervan Build It.
Helen Carstens, raadslid vir die gebied,sê die ongelukkigheid oor die ontwikkelinghet begin voor haar tyd as raadslid, maarsy dink dit is positief vir die omgewing.
“Die hardeware-winkel is nou daar, so ekverwag dat daar nie meer baie klagtes gaanwees nie. Die winkel lyk mooi, daar is baiemeer parkering en die omgewing rondomdie sentrum is opgeknap. Die winkel kanvoorwaar ’n bate wees vir die steeds ont-wikkelende gemeenskap,” sê Carstens.

Die polisie in Bothasig en Tableviewondersoek twee afsonderlike sake vangewapende roof ná ’n kettingwinkel inTableview en ’n vulstasie in BothasigSondagaand beroof is.
Dit blyk tans of die twee voorvallemet mekaar verband kan hou. In beidevoorvalle was vier gewapende mansbetrokke en het hulle met ’n wit Mer-cedes weggejaag.

“Daar word beweer vier gewapendeswart mans het om 18:30 by die 7-Ele-ven in Sandownweg in Tableview in-gebars en geld geëis. Hulle het met diegeld en items wat hulle by klante afge-neem het op die vlug geslaan.
“Die motor waarin hulle by die7-Eleven aangekom het, was ’n witMercedes, maar hulle het ook ’nHyundai van een van die klante ge-steel. Die saak word steeds onder-soek,” sê O’Reilly.

Residents in Edgemead and Bothasig, alongwith community organisations, last weekmarched in protest against load sheddingand Eskom’s perceived incompetence.
Ward councillor Helen Carstens, who ledabout 70 residents on the march, said SouthAfrica is in a crisis and homes, businessesand schools are suffering due to load shed-ding.
“Load shedding has cost us R300 billion.Since load shedding began in 2008, Eskom’stop executives have received R63 million in
performance bonuses, in addition to theirmassive salaries. This is an insult to allSouth Africans.
“The electricity crisis has also cost usjobs – one million jobs could have been crea-ted for us if there was no electricity crisis,”says Carstens.
She says the problem can be fixed by allo-wing more organisations to supply power.
“We must encourage more alternative,renewable energy projects. Eskom does nothave the ability to deliver on its mandate,therefore it is important we encourage en-trepreneurs to come up with new ideas togenerate electricity.”

Reservist members from Bothasig policemade good arrests while assisting with cri-me prevention in the area.
Reservist Constables Kyle Williams andJade King were on duty last Wednesday at03:00when theynoticed avehicle in suspici-ous circumstances in Bosmansdam Road,Bothasig.
After speaking to the occupants, themembers searched the vehicle. They founda battery used to power traffic lights. Thevehicle’s occupants could not satisfactorilyexplain how it came to be in their possessi-
on of it.The battery was later identified as City
property worth over R2000.A further search also netted possible hou-
sebreaking implements anda small amountof drugs. A 30-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman from Parow were arrested andcharged for possession of presumed stolenproperty, possession of drugs and house-breaking implements. Both will appear incourt at a later stage.

They are homely beasts.They also do not sing onrooftops as their mating urgewas removed by their local vet.Cats do not poo on lawns, grassetc. They bury their surprises.They also do not dig up plantsto do so but would opt for aclear piece of earth.So if one looks at the problem
from an unemotional standpointone would come to the conclusi-on that the deviant cats are infact strays and have no owners.The solution: contact your localSPCA. They will send aninspector to your area. Theywill make sure that all the catsare in fact spayed, neutered andregistered. With a bit of entice-ment they can even set traps toeradicate the strays.Positive action gets positive

80 000 insects, which have been releasedsince operations begun at the facility.Awell-known biocontrol agent, the coch-
ineal insect was reared and later releasedon the invasive drooping prickly pear(Opuntia monacantha), with much suc-cess, says Van der Merwe.The plant on which the insect was re-
leased was destroyed within six months.This scale insect from the dactylopiidae
family is used widely across the dry East-ern and Northern Cape to control pricklypear (Opuntia spp.) invasions on farms.The cochineal insect thrives on themois-
ture and nutrients of prickly pear.“Treating prickly pear with cochineal
biocontrol is a vastly superior method toremoving the plant manually, which is dif-ficult and dangerous for City workers as ithas many thorns. Another problem withthemanual removal of prickly pears is thatbits of theplant, especially the cladode,willdrop to the ground and grow. The risk ofunintended introduction of prickly pearplants is eliminatedwhen using the biolog-ical control cochineal insect,” he said.The Cape Town Biological Control Pro-
gramme is a partnership between the De-partment of Environmental Affairs andRhodes University’s Department of Ento-mology, led by Professor Martin Hill.Rhodes University is an international
leader in the field of biological control andguides the City on rearing and releasinginsects to control selected invasive plants.Last year, the City’s biological control
team was trained by experts from RhodesUniversity.“Biological control is increasingly be-
coming a cost-effective method of controlin the war against infestations of invasiveplants,” he adds.The City’s Invasive Species Unit plans to
increase the awareness of the applicationof biological control.“The aim is to show learners howbiocon-
trol insects are reared for release, not onlyraising awareness, but also providinglearners with the opportunity to see first-hand how these highly specialised insectsare reared,” he says.

ATHLETICS: JAVELIN ACE HAS CLEAR GOAL IN SIGHT

The bar is set at 82 metres for Proteajavelin ace Rocco van Rooyen comeFriday 17 April at the South African
Athletics Championship in Stellenbosch.Throwing the 82 metres will open
doors to international events for theKuils River resident.
Rocco, who struggled with a groin andelbow injury at the CommonwealthGames in Scotland last year, still man-aged to finish in sixth place with a dis-tance of 77.57m.
“I did a lot of crossfit training in theoff-season, focusing on explosivenessand just on getting my whole bodystronger. Although I still struggle withmy groin and elbow, I feel a lot better and
confident of getting the job done in Stel-lenbosch.
“I had the privilege of spending a weekwith the current world javelin championVitezslav Vesely from the Czech Repub-lic in February. We were in Potchef-stroom and he helped me a lot with mytechnique.
“For now, the focus is getting rid of myold habits and drilling in the new tech-niques to iron out my mistakes. It is awork in progress, but I am starting to feelmore comfortable and I spend a lot oftime going through the motions,” saidRocco.
At the Western Province Top 10 inter-club competition held at Parow on 28March, Rocco took first place with athrow of 79.08m. With the throw he again
secured his place as the country’s top jav-elin athlete.
“The objective for now is crystal clear.I have two national championships leftto reach 82 metres. The first is 17 Aprilin Stellenbosch and then 7 May in Pot-chefstroom.
“If I reach that mark, I will qualify forthe world championship in August,which will be held in Beijing. I am reallygoing the extra mile to ensure I performat my best. Everything I do is for the glo-ry of God, He has given me the talent andopened so many doors for me. It is mydream to one day reach the 90 metremark. I am giving 110% to reach that, butirrespective if I do or don’t, I will giveGod all the honour for without Him I amnothing.”
