Stubborn vagrants backANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

City Law Enforcement officers and the An-ti-Land Invasion Unit conducted a cleanupoperation in Table View and surroundswhen they removed 11 illegal structuresand relocated 66 vagrants.

Eight of these structures were demol-ished on the grounds of Milnerton RidingClub on Saturday morning, but one of thepeople who went along on this operation,Table View Community Police Forum(CPF) chairperson Andrew Brace, says itwas all for nothing.

According to him the structures were re-moved and just a few hours later these wererebuilt by the vagrants.

“There were people to talk to them andask them if they wanted to be rehabilitatedor be taken to a shelter.

“They declined. We left after that andthey just rebuilt their illegal homes on thegrounds,” explains Brace.

He claims that the people living there ille-gally have been a thorn in the community’sside for years.

Even though Brace expected the worse, when he arrived on the scene he wasshocked to see the amount of garbagestrewn all over the place.

“Cables and electronic goods werestripped for copperandothermetals and therest of themess was left behind. There wereold cellphones, you name it, it was there. Itlooked like a proper garbage dump,” hesays.

Brace is under no illusion that operationssuch as this will never suffice to get rid ofthese vagrants.

He has been quoted before in TygerBurg-er saying that the onlyway to overcome this

social problem is for residents to be waryof what they leave in the garbage bins.

It is a common sight to drive around ongarbage day and see homeless people flock-ing to the garbage bins like seagulls to apiece of food.

Brace continues: “I have seen people leav-ing golf clubs, televisions and microwavesnext to their bins for vagrants to pick up.

“I tell younow, if I see that again I’mgoingto throw those items back over your wall orgate, because you are dumping illegally.

“Table View residents think they arehelping the trolley brigade by giving themthis to recycle, but unfortunately this at-tempt at recycling has instead turned intodumping grounds.

“Weare asking all residents to pleasehelpby recycling their unwanted goods and notjust dumping goods on the pavement for thetrolley brigade to take away.”

Officers arrested two suspects; one for ri-otous behaviour, and one for possession ofnarcotics.

G’n gholfbaan kry Wikus onderANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

Ná ’n spannende eerste putjie moes Melk-bosstrand se Wikus Esterhuyzen eers ’npaar keer diep asemhaal.

“Elke oorplantingspasiënt is eintlik soos’n klein wonderwerkie!

Eight illegal structures at Milnerton Riding Club were removed on Saturday by a joint operation.Hours later these structures were rebuilt and apparently the problem simply persists.

An anonymous organ donor helped an 11-year-old boy fromMilnerton towin four goldand one bronze medals at last month’sWorld Transplant Games (WTG) in Durban. No one close to Robert Laubscher would

have dared imagine him sweeping away op-ponents in swimming and cycling, as well asinspiring millions around the globe whenhe was first diagnosed with Biliary Atresiaat the age of just 10 weeks old.Such amiracle was even further from be-

ing imagined while he endured various sur-geries, finally receiving a liver in 2006.The Laubscher family has gone through

many a testing moment, but Robert in par-ticular has never given up.Wise beyond his years, the talented boy

now has the world at his feet.He won a bronze medal in the backstroke,

a gold medal in butterfly, two gold medalsin freestyle and a gold medal in the cycletime trial.Sometimes he came up against boys al-

most twice his size and in the cycle time trialhe was the youngest contestant.Nothing or nobody could stand in his way. After the confident Robert completed the

race he said: “It was easy!”His first love isn’t cycling, however, but

swimming. And the medals speak for themselves.Much like his father before him, he would

become a champion.“Robbie must’ve gotten it from Carl (his

father),who is a former SouthAfrican swim-

mer. He certainly didn’t get it from me!”laughs his mother Milena. When asked howmuchRobert enjoyed the

WTG, she answered without hesitation: “Hehadablast! He loved the sport, lovedmeetingpeople from all over the world, loved sup-porting the other athletes, and loved havingaweek in sunnyDurbanwherehemade surehe went into the warm sea whenever hecould!Robbie’s a great kidwhoembraces lifeand is excited to enjoy everything that hecan.”Robert first achieved his Protea colours in

2010 and was meant to attend the previousWTG in Sweden in 2011 but unfortunately hewas too ill to attend.“We were all very upset about it, but then

he looked at me and said: ‘Why are you soupset? You know that God’s timing is per-fect.”Moments of uncanny wisdom beyond his

years are indeed commonplace. He has noqualms about speaking in front of others andoften has a deluge of motivational words forthose who need it.He keeps some for himself as well. His immune-suppressing medications

take a toll on his well-being and normallymean a prolonged down-time and slow re-covery rate, but he still loves being activewhen he can.Robert’s new love is surfing and with his

bags of determination one can see him rid-ing any wave that come his way.Milena concludes: “We have immense

gratitude to the donor of Robbie’s liver. If itwere not for the organ donors, none of theserecipients would have their second chance.”

Batteries, a spare wheel and fuel were sto-len from two vehicles parked in thegrounds of the Eric Miles Cheshire Homeon Saturday evening.According to general manager Alet Bos-

man the perpetrator(s)must have climbedover the palisades to gain entry to theproperty.“These incidents happen rarely, but we

nonetheless need to upgrade the securityto safeguard our vulnerable residents,”she explains.“We heard the dogs barking Saturday

evening, but we thought at that momentit must have been one of the staff mem-bers. The nextmorning at 07:00wenoticedsomething was wrong,” Bosman elabo-rates.One of the back windows of a vehicle

was broken and a radio was stolen. The boot was opened and a spare wheel

was also taken, as well as the car battery.Soon after discovering this they also no-

ticed the battery of the delivery truck wasstolen.Arguably more shocking was the fact

that someone pierced the body of the truckto get to the diesel, which was syphoned. The perpetrator(s) would have had to

climb back over the intimidating pali-sades.“We desperately need someone to help

us to buy some barbed wire and install acamera at the entrance.“It ought not to cost too much,” she

adds.VMeanwhile, on Friday night someone

who was handcuffed came to the home inthe evening and said he was hijacked anddropped off at the nearby church.V Anyone who can help the home with securitycan contact Alet Bosman on 021 552 2120.

According to an anonymous reader the gov-ernments of the world are hiding somethinghuge...There might actually be two suns! The reader is also open to the possibility

that theremight be a large planet somewherebetween the Earth and the sun and she’s not

talking about Mercury or Venus. The reader and a friend used differentcameras when they photographed the sunrecently. The various images all had one thing incommon – a ghostly sphere borders thesun. What could this be?The South African Astronomical Ob-servatory (SAAO) reckons it’s a lens flare. The reader insists, however, that it ismuchmore likely that they’re hiding some-thing from us.She adds: “It’s been veryhot recently andthis could be the reason. I’ve been on theinternet and I can’t find anything that sayssomething strange is happening! I mailedthe photos to SAAO and they told me it’san optical illusion. How could three camer-as have the same optical illusion?”Most are well aware that suns or planetsdon’t just drop by the solar system for aquick visit and then scuttle off again, butthis newspaper nonetheless thought itcould be interesting to hear what SAAOsays about these photos. When TygerBurger told an SAAO out-reach astronomer Nicola Loaring thatshe’s clearly part of an elaborate and glo-balwide conspiracy, she laughed: “Well, ob-viously I’m in on it!”CapeTownPhotographicSociety’sDetlefBasel clears the confusion up for almosteveryone when he says: “We are dealingwith a camera flare. If this was to be a newplanet the rest of the world would haveknown about it long ago.”The reader obviously refuses to believethis.“This doesn’t make sense what they aresaying. For three days I took pics and fromthree different cameras.“Also the weather! Why doesn’t anyonewant to see the facts,” she asks in exaspera-tion.Considering that the “other” heavenlybody is about eight times smaller than thesun when viewed from Earth, it would ei-ther be absolutely massive and far away,or alternatively, as big as the Earth some-where between our planet and Venus.Since the “other body” can be seen nextto the sun it cannot be a planet becausefrom our perspective it would only be a sil-houette.This “other body” produces its own lightso it could be a sun. However, if there’s another sun in the vi-cinity then we are already dead accordingto Isaac Newton.Loaring concludes: “Light often bends orrefracts through the lenses of cameras.Thismultiple reflectioncanresult inmulti-ple images of the object and other artifactswhich is what I think the spot is on her pic-ture.“It is also common to have ‘ghost images’or flares when the primary light source isparticularly bright.”

Secret planet next tosun affects weather

Several pictures sent to TygerBurger by a reader suggests that there’s a massive heavenly bodybetween Earth and the Sun.

Moses Adams, originally from Milnerton, was triumphant in the Red Bull Unlockedat Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban re-cently.

In a field of the country’s best profession-al skaters and in an area that skating is usu-ally prohibited, Moses Adams fought offsome of the best skaters in the country.

In a hotly-contested final against DlaminiDlamini, Jean-Marc Johannes, BraxtonHaines and Yann Horowitz on smooth, pol-ished concrete surfaces, Adams impressedthe judges to win the first-ever Red Bull Un-locked.

Adams proved throughout the competi-tion that he was hungry for the win by land-ing some of the most insane tricks of theday. He fought off the competition with his

sensational final run which included a var-ial heel flip, a nollie flip and a frontside flip.

“We never get to skate at somewhere likethis. The surface is so nice to skate on – nocracks or rocks and just so smooth,” re-marked Adams.

“I felt really comfortable today and justworked on getting to the finals. Dlaminiwas really skating well and I’m just glad Idid my best and was able to win.”

The one-day event, unique in the fact thatit gives participants access to an areawhere their sport would be ordinarily beprohibited, was judged by some of the mostesteemed skaters in the community, An-drew Morck, Ken-Rae James and editor atSession Skateboarding Magazine, BrendanBody.

Traffic Services’ Public Transport Unit(PTU) plans enforcement operations atproblematic areas where taxi drivers oper-ate, according to Richard Bosman, execu-tive director: Safety and Security. The PTU’s operations are focused on ille-

gal minibus taxi operators, minibus taxisoperating contrary to their operating li-cences and enforcement of general roadtransgressions.Bosman responded to questions posed by

TygerBurger after last week’s article enti-tled “Fines alone ‘won’t stop taxis’”.The seriousness of taxi operators driving

without licences or in unlicensed vehiclesonce again came to the fore after TableView chairperson Andrew Brace joined atraffic operation held by Milnerton Trafficand Table View police. In just 30minutes of stoppingand inspect-

ing taxis they uncovered more thanR100 000 of outstanding fines.Says Bosman: “For themonth of July, the

PTU, which consists of just 24 members,

wrote a total of 629 fines forunlicenseddriv-ers (310 of them minibus taxi drivers), and427 for unlicensed vehicles (169 of themminibus taxis).”He adds that unlicensed drivers are is-

sued with a summons for an offence if theycan produce valid proof of identification. Ifno proof of identification can be produced, traffic officers have the authority to detaina person for nomore than 12 hours to ascer-tain said information.Issuing summons or detaining drivers

are, however, a last resort.Bosman concludes by saying that the

City of Cape Town’s Traffic Services’ mis-sion statement indicates that it is more im-portant to increase voluntary compliancewith the law. This is apparently done by strategic plan-

ning, education and enforcement.According to mayoral committee mem-

ber for safety and security, JP Smith theremight soonbenewprovincial traffic regula-tions that will allow the impounding of ve-hicles for a number of offences when previ-ously a person would just have received afine.

Plan to stop errantmini taxis on track

I frequently take my dog forwalks up the green belt. Andthis is where we meet thefriends, foes and strangers inour neighbourhood. Many assume that I must be

quite fit from all my hours ofwalking, till I enlighten themon the real action taking place. Our walks include a pit stop

under a shady tree, neighbour-hood news is being exchanged, new fences and walls dis-cussed, dog tails wagging andfew belly laughs aching, socially mixing without thecommitment of tea and cake. The time and length of each

walk depends on who youmeet. One colourful characterwill capture you with theriches of his many experiencesof life, another will offer herbits of happenings in our area, some will have a moment toshare...yes the rat races are inthe walks too, they willindicate a nod in your direc-tion.We all put up fences, length-

en the walls around ourgardens, hide behind bars andwave from afar, this is life inthe city. Sometimes we need toventure out and take a walk todiscover that your neighbouris closer to you than a brotherfar away. All in all, neighbour-hood watch is all in thewalking about.

It is sometimes really laughableto read what people complainabout. We live in a countrywhere the laws only apply tothose who still believe in them.We have foreigners in our

country due to poor administra-tion. Those people are the onesnow standing at the robotstrying to earn an income.Where are our locals, rathersitting at home waiting for amiracle to happen to improvetheir lives? I’m not saying it’s agood thing but it is better tosupport “the foreigners” andour newspaper people versusour white counterparts whostand at the exact same robotwith a sign begging for money. One cannot escape them any

more. They are at each andevery robot, putting up a sadface yet dressed in modernfashion begging poverty! If you really want to com-

plain then get involved byraising an opinion towards realissues like the proposed majordevelopments coming to thenorthern suburbs.The urban edge is the danger;

wetlands are affected bydevelopments in and aroundDurbanville.Child abuse and human

trafficking: both have become amajor problem in our country.Report those who fail to complyby our country laws. Do not getswept up with people’s attitudesor negativity. Keep your spacea happy one.We all have a choice in life to

make something of our lives. Ifyou want to sit on your back-side and do nothing, you willbecome a statistic like the restof the country. Do somethingconstructive with your life, nomatter how small. Just startsomewhere, start today. Peoplehave to learn to respect andcomply to rules and regula-tions. Stop being a ding-bat, beconsiderate and do not followthe masses who feel that lifeowes them.

Ek deel graag my eie resep vir kerriemet julle.

4 eetlepels Amina’s-kerriepasta. 2 eetlepels borrie. 1 blikkie gekapte tamaties. 1 eetlepel suiker. blatjang na smaak. 2 koppies aftreksel (vleis of hoender). gegeurde sout na smaak. aartappels in kwarte gesny (1 medium-aartappel per persoon). 1 bossie wortels – geskil en in dik ringegesny. 1 klein pakkie droë geelperskes (opsio-neel)

Só maak mens:Braai uie oor lae hitte tot ligbruin in ’nbietjie olie. Voeg die kerriepasta by enroerbraai vir ’n minuut of twee oor lae hitte.Voeg vleis of hoender by en braai tot effensverbruin. Voeg borrie, tamaties, suiker, blatjang en 1 koppie aftreksel by. Bedien met basmati-rys.V Bel Louise vir navrae by 021 591 8391.

How to calculate your fareTo calculate the fare for specific journeys, use the fare calculator on www.myciti.org.za, or call 0800 65 64 63.

Journeys connecting with the Airport attract an additional charge of either R35.70 (with a MyCiTi Mover package)or R51.90 (without a MyCiTi Mover package).

MyCiTi’s distance-based fare systemmeansmorechoice for users, with lower fares for travelling outsideof busy hours and travel packages offering majordiscounts at all times.

MyCiTi’s newwebsite has justbeen launchedwith searchable

timetables, a distance-based farecalculator and integrated GoogleMapsso that you can better plan your journey.Other featureswill soon be introducedincluding a handy trip planner providing

options for travel and the ability to viewreal-time service updates. Mobile phoneuserswho need to access schedulinginformationwhile on-the-go can visitourmobi-sitemycitibus.mobi or dial*120*1040# from anymobile phone(USSD rates apply).

Visit www.myciti.org.za

The new distance-basedfare system calculates thedistance travelled from

where you first tap in, when enteringaMyCiTi bus or station, to whereyou tap out at your final destinationand charges you a fare according tothe distance band for that journey. The distance bands are 0-5km,5-10km, 10-20km, 20-30km,30-60km andmore than 60km.This is good news for themajority

of passengers and especially thosetravelling shorter distances, suchas from the Civic Centre to PaardenEiland, because the cost of theirjourneywill be far cheaper thanwith the previous system.Savings are also available to

commuters who start their journeyoutside the Peak fare periods of06:30 to 08:30 in themornings and16:00 to 18:00 in the afternoons onweekdays. For journeys starting atall other times on weekdays, andall day on weekends and publicholidays, fares will be on average17% lower than Peak fares, whichwe call the Saver fare period. There will also be discounts

of 20% or more during the Peakand Saver periods for those whoload travel packages onto theirmyconnect cards, called Moverpackages. There are also no load

fees for Mover packages and theyonly expire after three years, soeven infrequent MyCiTi travellerscan benefit. Mover packagesare initially only available fromselected station kiosks and notat MyCiTi retailers that offer cardsales and top-up facilities.Journeys can include transfers

and stops along theway. Leave anystation or bus for up to 45minutesbefore tapping in again and onlypay a single-trip fare based on theaccumulated distance travelled. This benefit applies as long as thereis less than two hours between yourfirst and last tap in, and it isn’t areturn journey.Brett Herron, Mayoral Committee

Member: Transport for Cape Town, says, “the twomain principlesbehind the new system are thatthe fares should be comparable tothose charged by other bus servicesand theminibus-taxi industry, andtheymustminimise the cost deficitof the system.“It has been a challenge, but

we think the new system strikesthe balance between these twoprinciples. We have done thisby giving benefits to regularusers and to off-peak travel, toencourage the most efficient usepossible of the MyCiTi fleet.”

The name Cape of Storms was reinvokedearly Tuesday morning when gale forcewinds and intimidating waves smashed afishing boat into the rocks at Robben Island.

Rescue personnel, which included Melk-bosstrand (Station 18) Sea Rescue, were cal-led out just after midnight to save the 12 trap-ped fishermen.

Says station commander Rhine Barnes:“Station 3 and Station 2 were also called out.I was based in the control room during theoperation, but I believe the seas were prettyrough out there.”

The 12 men were rescued from the ship-wrecked boat named “Clairmont” and takento the Waterfront where emergency person-nel assessed their condition.

No one was injured in the rescue opera-tion, but Barnes says their (Station 3) boatwas badly damaged during the dangerousprocedure.

Barnes elaborates: “Before we could clearMelkbosstrand, a huge wave broke over the

boat smashing the windscreen. Soon afteranother wave smashed into the hatch coverand swamped the electrics causing both mo-tors to die. To the relief of the tense crew, one of the motors was restarted and the boattaken to deeper waters where the crew couldassess the damage. They were able to get thesecond motor started and continued with therescue operation.

“Our rescue boat, ‘Rotary Spirit of the Vi-nes’ has been badly damaged and it is goingto be costly to get her repaired in time forthe summer season. The electrical system aswell as the electronics which includes radar, radio and GPS may have to be replaced. Wewill only know this after everything hasbeen properly checked by the technicians.”

Kobus Meyer, the Coxswain of Spirit of theVines and rescue swimmers Ryan Minaarand Quinton Luck are commended for thehandling of the boat under very dangeroussea conditions.

If anyone would like to donate funds forthe repair of the vessel, contact Barnes on082 990 5958 or phone the head office on021 434 4011.

Ann Jangle: bright staron Cape blues sceneLOUISA STEYL

@lounotes

With a voice filled with soul and lyr-ics that elicit a rollercoaster of emo-tions, singer/songwriter, Li-Ann

Cummins, or Ann Jangle, as she’s knownon stage, is one of Cape Town’s folk bluesgems. The songstress paid her dues singing

back-up for SouthAfricanblues legend, PietBotha and performing with Akkedis fromtime to time, before starting her ownproject.“That’s kindawhere the journey started,”

Ann says. In 2011, she started playing withbassist, Nozomé Brink. At first Ann and Nozomé would just get

together to play two-piece, and before toolong they were joined by guitarist, GerhardCoetzee and drummer, Matthew Raven,Ann explains.

Music styleAnn says it’s tricky to describe the

group’s sound. “We touch on somanydiffer-ent styles,” she says.“We’ve got an old, 40s-invoking, hip-shak-

ing, bit of a rockabilly twist, type of style, and then we also do a lot of more dramatic, more folksy, hectic vocals,” she says, add-ing: “It’s very hard to explain.”Ann Jangle has recorded a song for the

Blues Breakers album, a project by VH Mu-sic and Publishing, which sees some ofSouth Africa’s biggest blues artists payingtribute to the history of blues.“It’s a huge privilege to play on the same

album as Albert Frost and Black Cat Bonesand Piet Botha,” Ann says.“These are the guys I used to just stand

at the bottom of the stage and drool over, you know what I mean,” she says. The album is set to be launched in Cape

Town in September, after it’s official launchat the Fellowship of Rock and Roll festival

in Mozambique.Ann Jangle is also busy working on a sec-

ond album and plans to shoot the groupsmusic video soon.Their debut album,Acoustic Archive, was

released in 2012 and was the CD that soldthe most copies at Table Mountain BluesSummit 2012. They are hoping to release thenew album by the end of this year.

VideoThe group is about to shoot themusic vid-

eo for the single, “Moral Code”. Ann ex-plains that the song tells the story of a wom-an accused of cheating by her lover, whenhe in fact has a guilty conscience. She saysthe message of the song is that “all of us areactually the same”.“Everyone makes mistakes, we all do the

wrong thing sometimes,” Ann says. Themusic video will be about a scorned womanwho gets her revenge. “It’s going to be in anold-school setting with a desert cowboyscene,” Ann elaborates.“At the moment it’s pretty much writing

and just performing everywhere asmuch aswe can,” Ann says of what the group is cur-rently doing. The Ann Jangle Band also recently

gained a brass section and Ann says she ishopes to get a “big festival band going”.V You can see Ann Jangle in action when they per-form at Hillcrest Quarry on Sunday afternoon withNo One’s Arc. SAREL BURGER

DurbanvillerWhite is ’n Durbanviller in murg en been.

Nie net was hy 11 jaar lank ’n WP-kampi-

rugbyklub Durbanvile-Bellville, waar hyvanmeet af sy stempel as ’n puik losvoorspe-

gerbergse spanne se program vir Saterdag(tuisspan eerste): Victoriane t Belhar, Brac-kenfell t Hands & Heart, Kuilsrivier t Vals-baai, UWK t Goodwood, Hamlets t Noordeli-kes/Northlink-kollege.
