Charmaine Pereira was once a builderand estate agent who owned two hou-ses in Plattekloof Hills. But life has de-

strength to endure all: emotional pain, bro-kenness, humiliation, bankruptcy. It hasbirthed in me the desire to want to helpothers.“I was married for 16 years and then got

divorced. I married my second husband andopened a pub in the heart of Brooklyn butsold it after he shot himself.She admits she has made some bad decisi-

ons, but she has never touched any substan-ces. The NPO Mitchell’s Mission, a “Safehouse for those who are lost” in Sanddrift,took Charmaine and her third husband inseven years ago, during which Charmainesupported her third husband in his recoveryfrom various addictions and “the wild sideof life”, as she puts it. They stayed there forthree years, first in a tent and then in aWen-dy house.In 2009 Charmaine registered an NPO, Re-

aching out to Others, to help people who aredown and out, to find their feet. “There arejust too many people who end up in squattercamps or on the streets,” she says.Today they stay with their friend, Brenda

Fraught, in her house in Richwood. Theyshare it with 20 other destitute people.Brenda, who also stayed in a room in the

middle of someone’s lounge once, opened upthe bottom half of her two-storey house forhomeless people a year ago. All the spaceshave been divided by curtains and partiti-ons. The beds are tidy and the floors, com-munal bathroom and kitchen are spotless.Although there is hardly space for two peo-

ple to pass in the little corridors between the“rooms”, there is an atmosphere of calm be-nevolence in the house.“I thought Iwould gonutty at first because

I am a little bit of a loner, but I love goingdown there and talking to everybody. Thesepeople are like family.Everybody looksaftereach other, everybody cares for each other.That, to me, is the most beautiful,” saysBrenda. “For people who have nothing, andI literallymean nothing, they are still prepa-red to share. In the beginning this reallybrought tears tomy eyes.My lifewould havebeen empty without them.”

But now the time has come to move on.Reaching out to Others has been grantedthe use of farming land in Mamre and Bren-da has put her house in the market for themto be able to do so. The land has nothing onit except a borehole with water, but nopump.Once her house is sold and the bond is set-tled, all the profits will go to Reaching outto Others, to help fund the Wendy houses,solar panels and a water pump among otherthings.“We can take in people as long as the landis used for farming,” says Lorina Daniels,the small farmer who benefited from a landredistribution case in 2005 and who hasagreed to share her land inMamrewith Rea-ching out to Others.“I am happy for Charmaine and Brendaand I amhappy to be involvedwithmorewo-men who share my vision of farming andcommunity,” she says.“Wewill be staying there as labourers andwe have to farm,” says Charmaine.“I’ve tried farming a few times in my lifebut the timing was not right. The timing isright now. It is different because Imatured,”Brenda says. She stayed on a farm as a childand has dreamt of farming since she was alittle girl.“My family is supporting me. I want to dothis Hillbilly style,” she says. “Once I givethis house up, there is no turning back, wehave to make it. We won’t walk out with ourtails between our legs, we would never,” shesays. “I have no farming experience, but I

have enough passion,” says Charmaine.“You learn as you go along. The soil is goodfor grenadellas and proteas, wewill be doingthat. My son is an excellent welder, he willhelp us make tunnels to plant cucumbersand tomatoes.”Charmaine has already planted 60 avoca-do trees that she cultivated from pips. About18 people from the house are moving to theland and there is a list of those who want tojoin the farm. Charmaine, as CEO of Rea-ching out to Others, is taking charge of theeffort. “Wewon’t, for instance, allow alcoholor other substances. The message is clear:

no substance abuse. I canbevery compassio-nate and understanding, but I can be verystrict also,” she says. The challenge now isto create an infrastructure on the farm. “Ihave the drive and the tenacity and the con-sistency to make it happen.At themoment she is spending all her timesearching for funding and donations. “Thisis not something thatwill happen overnight.It is like building up a little business. An innovative form of hydroponic urbancrop farming inNorthpinehas both theCityof Cape Town, the Western Cape provincialgovernment and two other South Africanprovinces keyed up to get on the bandwa-gon.In his backyard in Northpine, engineerVernon Pretorius is currently growing 800tomato plants on a piece of land no biggerthan 63 m², yielding enough tomatoes to sus-tain a financially viable small farming busi-ness.What makes this crop unique is the hyd-roponic technique used. It’s called NutrientFilm Technique (NFT), whereby a veryshallow stream of water containing all thedissolved nutrients required for plantgrowth is re-circulated (into an under-groundwater tank) past thebare roots of theplants in a watertight gully or channel.The depth of the circulating water is veryshallow, which ensures that the thickmoistroot mat, which develops in the bottom ofthe channel, is exposed to the air, resultingin an abundant supply of oxygen.Says Pretorius: “The result of this uniquecombination ofwater, oxygenandnutrientsis a much higher, faster growing yield ofhigh quality produce, making it very pro-ductive. It yields double the produce thanconventional hydroponic methods and en-

sures an all-year round production, by hea-ting or chilling the water in which the cropgrows.”Pretorius started researching NFT eightyears ago after seeing it at a small farm inOudtshoorn. After intense research he setup the infrastructure and has since grownlettuce, strawberries and tomatoes.Although the initial infrastructure costhim R90 000, this small scale crop can gene-rate a monthly income of R20 000.Pretorius now envisions a community

project in Northpine, creating an urban ve-getable “farm”, to empower the unemploy-ed and impart skills.Subcouncil chairman Grant Twigg is ve-ry excited about the prospects of such a pro-ject, saying that the possibilities are end-less.“The value of skills impartment to thecommunity cannot be overemphasised.Projects like these can even be combinedwith social grants programmes, to generatean income for the unemployed,” Twigg said

Members of the South African police areequipping themselves with how to speakMandarin in order to better assist the Chi-nese nationals now living in South Africa.A three-month course, funded by the go-

verment of the People’s Republic of China,is offered by the Confucius Institute at UCTand hosted at the Grand Cape China in Mil-nerton.WO Annacletta Mothoalo, spokesperson

for theKleinvlei policewho is attending thecourse, said the purpose of the programmeis to teach officers basic Mandarin in orderto communicate better with Chinese natio-nals in Cape Town.She said the course was also presented in

Johannesburg.According to her the police do not receive

a lot of cases from members of the Chinesecommunity in areas such as Eerste River.“But if you go to an area like Milnerton

or the airport there will be more cases tobe dealt with,” Mothoalo said.“The motivation for the language course

is due to the fact that there are a lot ofChine-se businesses in South Africa.“What they discovered is that when they

opena case at the police station it is difficultfor them to communicate with the police,”Mothoalo said.She said the Chinese nationals requested

their government’s help in this regard.“The Chinese government said they are

willing to pay and to teach the police offi-cers together with traffic officers and lawenforcement how to speak Mandarin.“The course is very interesting, but it is

also difficult.“You are supposed to learn the tones, and

for each tone there is a character.“The characters are very difficult becau-

se of their designs, but they showed us how

to do it.“At the beginning it was difficult but if

you apply yourself it becomes a bit ea-sier,” Mothoalo explained.She said an oral test is planned for later

this month.“The women will then be wearing tradi-

tional Chinese dresses and do spiritualdancing.“After that there is going to be a session

where we have to introduce ourselves inChinese.”According to Mothoalo they will be met

by a panel of Chinese delegates.“It’s an interesting thing really. You

must work hard, I really enjoy it and I ampassing.”The course runs from January until

March.According toMothoalo several police offi-

cers are taking the course.“Some are sector commanders, some are

communication officers.”Mothoalo said the top three students will

be travelling to China for further trainingfor two months.“That is why I am fighting. I want to go

the Traditional Longhair Silver cats”,says cat breeder Alida Delport.“These cats were preserved from the

modernization of the Persian cats. Theystill have the longer noses and larger earsthat were features of the Chinchilla catsof 130 years ago. The breed was acknow-ledged in 2010 as a cat breed in its ownright by the World Cat Federation.”

Claire, 31, is a drug addict. She is alsoa rape victim and a mother, who hastried many times to shrug the habit

that cost her custodyof her six-year-old son.She earns a living begging, and by telling

her story she hopes to reach other addictsand generate someunderstanding about ad-diction and the destructive power of drugs.

“Literally my whole life revolves aroundgetting and using of drugs – everything elsecomes second. Without drugs I can’t functi-on, so in order to do anything else I firstneed to have the drugs. Every single day isspent frantically trying to just survive,” shesays.

“I usuallywake up startingwithwithdra-wal symptoms and have to make a planquickly before it gets too late, so I start wal-king in the direction of Bellville, asking pe-ople I meet along the way if they can pleasehelp with taxi fare, or something like that.

“I don’t get high from using anymore, it’sjust to stay ‘not sick’. Once I’ve hadmy firstshot (heroin is her drug of choice) for theday I can then start to really make moneyandwill go to different areas every daywithdifferent stories to make money,” she says.

ProgressedShe’s tried most drugs, Claire says.“I started with dagga and alcohol in high

school and soon progressed to doing speedand sometimesmandrax. Later inmy teensI did the whole party scene and regularlyused ecstasy and cocaine, then ephedrineand occasionally hallucinogenic drugs.

“At the age of 18 I first used heroin withmy boyfriend at the time – who is now deadas a result of an overdose – and have beenstruggling to stop ever since. I was also ad-dicted to crack in my early twenties. At themoment I am injecting heroin and using tikon a daily basis.”

Claire says it’s very easy to get drugs inBellville. “It is ridiculously easy to getdrugs – the dealers will actually approachyou if they think you’re looking for drugs.It’s also relatively cheap – at R35 for a quar-ter gram of heroin, or a bag of tik.

“I think the police don’t have the resour-ces or themanpower to effectively dealwithall the drug dealers in Bellville.

“They also don’t have enough of the cor-

rect information to catch the right peopleto make a difference, because if you catchthe small-time dealers, more will pop upthan there was to begin with.”

Tough loveHermomdied 11 years ago and her father

remarried. He recently gave up trying tohelp her. “Last July they finally kicked meout for good andwouldn’t takeme back andsent my son to live with his father. I thinkit hurts my family too much to see me likethis and they feel helpless to fix it so theyprefer to stay away from me.”

Claire says she has no friends left. “I used(drugs) with my friends from school butthey’re all clean now, except the ones whodied. I have lost twoboyfriends to drugs andcountless friends as well as acquaintancesover the years.”

During February this year while on ahigh she ended up in Delft where she wasraped, but can’t recall details of her assai-lants. She now regularly frequents the Bell-ville Police Station, but for solace, or “whenI’m having a particularly hard time”.

Claire says a lack of self-esteem and a badrelationship with her parents drove her todrugs. “Different people deal with adversesituations in different ways and I unfortu-nately ended up using drugs.”

She describes using drugs as “someonetelling me everything is going to be okaybut the withdrawal symptoms are “absolu-te agony”. Using means feeling normal, shesays.It broke her heart to lose her son.

“Yes, I was high at the time, that’s whyhe was taken away, because I was using. Itbreaks my heart every day that I can’t bewith him all the time and be there for himevery day after school and to put him to bedevery night, especially because he’s goingthrough such a hard time and doesn’t un-derstand why he can’t be with me.”

Claire has spent a total of almost five ye-ars – intermittently over the last 12 years– in rehab.“I have to believe I can rehabili-tate – if I knew that for the rest of my lifeI would be enslaved by heroin I honestlythink Iwouldkillmyself right now, becausethere would be no point in carrying on likethis with no hope of recovery.”Claire hasa simple wish: “To have a chance at a newlife in a small town away from cities anddrugs, where there is a job that I could dothat would sustain me and my son”.

Three African elephantsmay soon be roaming thehills and winelands of

Meerendal wine estate outsideDurbanville, depending on ap-proval from CapeNature.

However, they will be in thefull-time control of trained ele-phant handlers in designatedareas.

Imagine sipping wine on therestaurant stoep while the BigFeet walk past or enjoying theview of the farm dam while thegroup enjoys a mud bath.

It was not only this perfectmarketing picture, but more sothe love for African animals ofHerman Coertze, owner of Mee-rendal, that gave birth to theproject in June last year.

Coertze also owns a gamefarm near Bela-Bela in the Lim-popo province, where the ele-phants will come from the near-by Vaaldam farm.

Meerendal is awaiting finalapproval fromCapeNature for apermit to translocate these ele-phants and keep them at Mee-rendal in compliance with therelevant regulations and land-use policy.

TheMeerendal elephantswillbe leased from theorganisation,Elephants for Africa Forever(EFAF), which was started in2005 by the world-recognisedelephant whisperer, Rory Hens-man, who passed away inMarch last year.

According to Deon Adriaan-se, coordinator of the Meeren-dal project, the three elephantswere tamed by Hensman him-self. They were rescued whentheywere identified to be culledin the Kruger National Park.

The elephants, all male, arethe 21-year-old Tembo, Chishu-ru and Moya, respectively 11and 10 years old.

EFAF will provide long-termsupervision over the elephantprogramme. The organisationwill also be responsible for thetranslocation of the elephants

from Bela-Bela to Meerendal.TheBigfeet Elephants@Mee-

rendal Wine Estate programmeis a key project of the BigfeetElephant Foundation, whichhas been established by Mee-rendal as a charity organisationto help promote the interests ofelephants in SouthAfrica. Up toOctober 2013 an amount ofmorethan R100 000 has been raisedfor the Bigfeet Elephant Foun-dation. This was mostly achie-ved with the launch of a uniquenew wine project entitled “BIG-FEET – Pressed by Elephants”.

The three Meerendal ele-phants were part of a group ofsix elephants that were used inan advertisement to trample onthe vines to “press the grapes”to make a Meerendal wine.

The wine was shipped inter-nationally and was an instanthit. Meerendal offered to giveR1 from every bottle of its “BigFeet Wine” sold, to the Big FeetFoundation.

Elephants atMeerendal is nota far-fetched idea, saidAdriaan-se. Elephants in the vicinity da-tes back to 1608 when JohnJourdain went ashore at Riet-vlei (near Milnerton) and tra-velled up the river towards theTygerberg Hills. He wrote thathe saw estreges (dung) and foo-tings (spoor) of elephant. Thefarm Meerendal was granted toJan Meerland by Governor Wil-lem Adriaan van der Stel in1702. Olifantskop, which is loca-ted between Durbanville andPhiladelphia, was named afterthe elephant that occurred the-re up to the early 1700s.

An existing unused cellar onMeerendal will be utilised as anelephant information centre.This centre will accommodatedisplays of all aspects of the ele-phants, their ecology and biodi-versity conservation. The 20th Trans-Atlantic, after ahumble start in 1995 with six ves-sels, will take place as from 14 to16 March.

The organisers of the event ex-pect 35 to 40 rubber ducks to com-pete in this year’s adventure fromthe Olifant’s River mouth to Melk-bos main beach over a period ofthree days and a distance of 430 ki-lometres.

The teamswill depart Strandfon-tein on Friday 14 March and com-pete over three stages to Velddrift.Teamswill overnight at theBergri-ver Municipality at the Stywelynecaravan park. The Saturday shift

will take the teams fromStywelynearound Cape Columbine the mostdangerouspoint along theWestCo-ast toLangebaan, and theSwiftHu-man Resources shift will end atYzerfontein main beach.

During the afternoon the teamswill race in the surf to determinethe king of the wave title for theevent. The final LCCPM stage willbring the teams home from Yzer-fontein to Melkbos on Sunday 16March at approximately 10:30.

The adventure will end with asurf riding event at Melkbos at12:00.

During this adventure the parti-

cipants aim to raise funds for theWestCoastNational SeaRescue In-stitute (NSRI) stations, that areresponsible for the safety of theparticipants on the water.

This adventure is also the singlebiggest NSRI practise in South Af-ricawhen the threemainNSRI sta-tions along the West Coast, Melk-bos, Yzerfontein and Saldanha areworking as a team under thewatchful eyes of Station 18 com-mander, Rhine Barnes.

They assure the safety of the te-ams, especially that of the newmembers on thewater, in all condi-tions.

On Saturday 23 February, aftercoming back from town, I foundmy four-month-old kitten in ourgarden, her back legs werelame. I rushed her to BellvilleAnimal Hospital as I thoughtshe had been hit by a car andher back was broken.

X-rays were taken of her back

and back legs, but nothing waswrong. On Monday, the vetagain took x-rays but this timeof the top half of her body.

It was found that she hadbeen shot with a pellet or airgun. Nothing could be done tosave her and she had to be putto sleep at only four monthsold!

What are we as humanscoming to? Pellet and air gunsshould be banned. Parents,please do not buy these danger-ous toys – a pellet gun is not atoy. It manes and kills.

I am the average South Africanand therefore enjoy a decentbraai at least once a week.

However, nowadays it isbecoming a costly exercise withthe prices of everything rising,but being a good South Africanit is not negotiable whether tobraai or not.

So to beat rising costs, Idecided to braai just once aweek and to buy my wood inbulk which will cost me less.Something I never consideredwas the slyness of the “woodpeople” – specifically referringto the people selling wood nextto Kenridge Primary School onweekends. About two weeks agoI had replenished my wood andwent to them and ordered 1 000pieces at R1 per piece – equat-ing to R1 000. It was to bedelivered at my home. In duetime they arrived and deliveredthe ordered wood. After theyleft, I was looking at theamount of wood and it seemedas if I was done in. Whencounting the wood, I discoveredthey delivered only 600 pieces,crooking me of R400. I am sodisappointed, because previous-ly I offered the same guys acold beer for their effort – thiswhile they were cheating meblind!

1.7 Eienaars moet om die korting aansoek doen in die jaar wat ’n nuwe algemenewaardasie of aanvullende waardasie, na gelang van omstandighede, inwerking gestel word. Aansoeke met die inwerkingstelling van ’n nuwealgemene waardasie moet die Stad bereik teen 31 Augustus van dieboekjaar waarin die waardasie in werking gestel sal word. Aansoeke met dieinwerkingstelling van ’n aanvullende waardasie moet die Stad bereik teendie laaste dag van die derde maand na die inwerkingstellingsdatum vandie waardasie. Indien nie, kan geen sodanige korting vir daardie boekjaretoegestaan word nie.

2. VERBRUIKSTARIEWE EN -HEFFINGSBTW teen 14% word by die volgende dienste bygevoeg: water, sanitasie, elektrisiteiten vaste-afvalbestuur.

2.1 WATER

Drie stelle watertariewe word voorgestel (10%-verminderingstarief, 20%-

verminderingstarief en 30%-verminderingstarief). Elke tarief is gekoppel aan die vlakvan watervermindering wat opgelê word. Aangesien die 10%-verminderingstariefas norm by die Waterverordening ingesluit word, sal dít die tarief wees wat geld. Ditkan egter later na gelang van verdere vereiste beperkings hersien word.

’n Verhoging van 8% in waterverbruikstariewe word voorgestel.

2.1.12 In pas met die aanvaarding van die beleid oor stedelike landbou is ’n gratistoewysing van 10 kℓ per maand ingestel vir die uitsluitlike doeleinde vanbestaansboerdery deur omskrewe kwesbare groepe.

2.1.13 Huishoudings in wooneenhede op gemengdegebruik-eiendomme kan om’n gratis toewysing van 6 kℓ per eenheid per maand aansoek doen. ’nBeëdigde verklaring sal vereis word, en die aansoek sal op grond van diepersentasie van die hoofgebruik ondersoek en oorweeg word.

2.1.14 Bestaande skuilings vir haweloses/ouetehuise (buiten dié wat ashuishoudelike groepe geklassifiseer is)/tehuise vir die gesondheid vandiegene met fisiese of geestelike gestremdhede

Hoogtepunte van voorgestelde wysigings

• Die persentasie stygings in blok 2 van die volledig huishoudelike kategorieoorskry die standaardstyging weens die verlaging in die subsidievlak in hierdieblok, wat op sy beurt deur verbruikspatrone en die watervraagstrategiegenoodsaak word.

• Trapsgewyse tariewe (1-6) is vanaf 1 Julie 2013 vir die huishoudelikegroepskategorie ingestel op grond van vorige oorlegpleging met kliënte.Verdere stappe is gedoen om dié kategorie verder in lyn met die volledigehuishoudelike kategorie te bring.

• Veranderinge in diverse tariewe en prosedures, onder meer die voortgesettestygings met betrekking tot behandelde afvalwater (bepaald vir gholfbane),uitroeptariewe van watervraagbestuurtoestelspanne vir kliënte wat niédeernisgevalle is nie, sowel as voorafbetaalde brandkrane, word in bylae 4 bydie begrotingsdokument uiteengesit.

• ’n Nuwe tarief vir die toepassing van serwitute van deurgang met betrekkingtot water sowel as die vereistes vir deposito’s/waarborge wat in geval vaninfrastruktuurskade aangewend moet word.

• Staking van verbruikersdeposito’s vir huishoudelike kliënte met ingang van1 Julie 2014.

2.2. SANITASIE

Drie stelle sanitasietariewe word voorgestel (10%-verminderingstarief,20%-verminderingstarief en 30%-verminderingstarief). Elke tarief is gekoppelaan die vlak van watervermindering wat opgelê word. Aangesien die10%-verminderingstarief as norm by die Waterverordening ingesluit word, sal dít dietarief wees wat geld. Dit kan egter later na gelang van verdere vereiste beperkingshersien word.

• RESIDENSIËLE TARIEWE: Algehele styging in inkomste uit die groep is 7,63%,maar individuele kliënte sal waarskynlik verskillende stygings waarneem opgrond van werklike verbruik. Die verskil tussen die gemiddelde en werklikestyging spruit uit die verhaling van die tekort aan inkomste uit die hulptarief virblok 1.

• Verbruikers wat 450 kWh per maand ontvang, sal dieselfde persentasie stygingwaarneem, ongeag die tarief wat vir hulle geld. Daar is dus geen verandering indie subsidievlak wat hierdie verbruikers op die hulptarief ontvang nie.

• GRATIS BASIESE ELEKTRISITEIT: Hulptariefkliënte wat minder as 250 kWh permaand ontvang, sal ’n gratis basiese toevoer van 60 kWh kry, terwyl diegene wattussen 250 kWh en 450 kWh per maand ontvang ’n gratis basiese toevoer van25 kWh per maand sal kry.

• Die kategorie “Klein kragverbruiker 1” met die buitespits-kombinasie word sedert1 Julie 2012 tot slegs bestaande kliënte beperk. Die buitespits-komponente stygook met ’n bogemiddelde bedrag om hierdie tarief uiteindelik uit te faseer.

• Tydspesifieke tariewe is herstruktureer om minimum pariteit met Eskom Megaflexte verseker.

LET WEL: Maandelikse diensheffings word bereken as die daaglikse diensheffing,vermenigvuldig met die getal dae in die rekeningtydperk.

Die Wes-Kaap Onderwysdepartement (WKOD) doen ’n beroep vir die aandag van alle ouers,leerders en lede van die publiek:• Geen persoon mag ’n onafhanklike skool vestig of instandhou of leerders inskryf

by so ’n onafhanklike skool sonder ’n registrasiesertifikaat van die Wes-KaapseOnderwysdepartement nie.

• Ouers word aangemoedig om eers vas te stel of ’n onafhanklike skool geregistreer isvoordat hulle kinders ingeskryf word.

• Aansoek vir die registrasie van ’n onafhanklike skool moet aan die WKOD voorgelê word,via ’n onderwysdistrikskantoor, teen 30 Junie van die jaar voor die skool van voorneme isom in werking te tree.

• Vir registrasiedoeleindes moet die skool voldoen aan akkommodasie-, onderrig-, enbestuursvereistes soos voorgeskryf in die registrasiebeleid.

• ’n Minimum van 20 potensiële leerders word vir registrasie vereis.• Onderwysers wat in diens is van ’n onafhanklike skool moet toepaslik gekwalifiseer en

geregistreer wees by die Suid-Afrikaanse Raad vir Opvoeders (SARO).• Enige persoon wat ’n ongeregistreerde onafhanklike skool bedryf is skuldig, en met

skuldigbevinding, strafbaar met ’n boete of gevangenisstraf.

The Spur School Mountain Bike Leaguecemented its position as one of the lea-ding sport development programmes

in the country when it was shortlisted as afinalist for the 2014 Discovery Sport Indus-try Awards.Launched in 2009 as a joint initiative bet-

ween Spur and Amarider, the league hasshown a 45% year-on-year growth and hasexceeded all initial projections in termsnumbers and reach. The league has grownexplosively and has expanded from 900 en-tries and 20 events in 2009 to 7506 entrantstaking part in 52 events hosted in nine SouthAfrican provinces as well as neighbouringcountries Zimbabwe, Namibia and Lesotho.League co-ordinator Meurant Botha of

Amarider attributes the amazing growth ofthe league to the hands-on involvement ofSpur Steak Ranches as well as the efforts ofa team of dedicated regional organisers andschool co-ordinators. He further states thatone of the key objectives of the league is toleave a legacy for participants by buildingtracks on school property or communitygrounds.

growth of the league in terms of partici-pants, more regional events and new tracksbeing developed in collaboration withschools and municipalities. The figures for2013 have shot up to more than 7000 entries.The level of competition has also improvedsignificantly since the launch of the leaguefive years ago,” says Botha.The Spur SchoolMountainBike League fi-

Racing towards glory

What a day Sunday turned out to beat the fourth and final cycling raceof the 2014 Hero Challenge Criteri-

um series at Century City.The event started at 14:15 with the catego-

ry 4 race, which hosted all club membersthat wanted to participate, followed by cate-gory 3 at 15:15 which comprised of the u-16,u-14 and u-12 cyclists.

Shortly after category 3 started their racethe skies turned grey and opened up with aslight drizzle, but the race ended in sunlightand relatively dried up roads. Everyonesighed in relief, but unfortunately this wasshort lived. As category 2 lined up the skiesopened up once again, more fiercely thistime. Miserable weather aside, the ridersheld on and raced their hearts out in a verytight and often nail biting race.

In category 1 for elite riders, we werejoined by some of the top cyclists in SouthAfrica. This included the Bonita’s Pro Cy-cling Team, WCC Africa MTN QhubekaFeeder Team and ASG. This promised to bean edge-of-your-seat race and the cyclistsdidn’t disappoint.

From the first bell the racers gave it every-thing theyhaddespite thewet and rainy con-ditions. RyanFelgate ofASG took first in theelite category, followed by Clint HendricksandMorne vanNiekerkwhoweremere splitseconds apart. Maroesjka Matthee, a multi-ple SA champion, took the honours in the la-dies’ category.

There were three hotspots during the eliterace at the 15, 30 and 45-minute marks withClint Hendricks taking the first spot, JaydeJulius the second and Ryan Felgate thethird.The fun isn’t over yet. Lights By Lineain association with KIA Diep River, Trek,Craft and eCentric Payment Systems willhost a winter series of events in Spring.

Zimbabweanborn Cape Town resident Themba Gorimbo earned himself both the fight ofthe night and submission of the night award on Thursday evening at Carnival City’s Big TopArena, after fighting through a dislocated shoulder at EFC 27.
