prize.

This recognizes an individual or organization for outstanding contributions towards solving the

world’s water problems by applying novel technologies or implementing innovative policies and

programs which benefit humanity. Self-nomination and nominations by family members of nominees

will not be accepted. Nominators are expected to be one of the following:

water industry or water utilities leaders;

leading academics in the field of water research, policy and management;

heads of international organizations;

members of government;

individuals deemed fit by Lee Kuan Yew water prize nominating committee.

The Korea Foundation is inviting applications for its field research fellowships.

The program is designed to facilitate in-depth research on Korean topics by supporting on-site study

and research by scholars and Korea specialists. Fellowship awards may last one to six months and

support research related to Korea. The foundation invites applications from:

doctoral candidates who have completed all academic requirements except their dissertation,

entitled to a monthly stipend of ₩2 million;

researchers with up to 10 years since receipt of their doctoral degree, who may receive a

monthly stipend of ₩3m;

assistant professors or lecturers with doctoral degrees, who may receive ₩4m per month;

full and associate professors, who may receive ₩5m per month.

In addition, each successful applicant is entitled to a return airfare and travel insurance. Candidates

These support the effort to create new professorships in the field of Korean studies in universities. All

SEPTEMBER

The Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation invites applications from institutions for its conference and

seminar grants.

These support conferences or seminars on Chinese studies in the humanities and social sciences.

Applications must be submitted by an institution.

Budgets for conferences should not exceed €25,000 and applicants are urged to seek matching funds.

Project abstracts must be submitted in English and Chinese.

Applications are accepted from 1 August to 15 September and from 1 December to 15 January

The David C Lam Institute for East-West Studies invites applications for its resident graduate

scholarship program.

This program aims to advance bilateral collaboration between Hong Kong Baptist University and

participating member institutions.

The eligible applicant must be a full-time graduate student working on a thesis with an East-West axis,

and must have the approval of their supervisor and home institution to accept the scholarship.

Furthermore, they should have secured confirmation from a specific department of the host institution

that a faculty with the relevant expertise is available as field supervisor for the research.

An allowance of HK$6,000 per month spent abroad is available. The residencies will last from a

period of one semester up to six months. When resources are available, applications from non-member

institutions will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The Chian Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange invites applications for

its publication subsidies.

These may be awarded for the purpose of funding academic publications in Chinese studies. The

publication may be in the form of a book or a monograph, and in the case of periodicals or journals the

foundation will support one year’s worth of publication. Priority will be given to first book projects by

junior scholars. The foundation encourages applications with matching funds from other sources.

The Korea Foundation invites applications under its policy-oriented research on Korea

program.

The program provides grant support for the research and dissemination of relevant information on

major Korea-related issues. The program seeks to encourage research projects that provide in-depth

analyses and recommend policy alternatives for key issues related to Korea, in the areas of

international relations, security, and unification, contemporary political, social, and economical issues.

Project proposals under this program are required to hold at least one related event, such as a

workshop, conference, or symposium for publicity and dissemination of the research results. Public

policy-oriented research institutes are eligible to apply for program assistance. Priority is given to

proposals with Korea-based collaborative partners. Personnel expenses and other costs directly related

The Korea Foundation invites applications for its publication subsidy program for publishers.

This aims to encourage the publication of Korea-related books in the fields of the humanities, social

sciences or culture and the arts in languages other than Korean. Overseas and domestic publishers are

eligible to apply.

For newly written works, up to ₩10 million is available to domestic publishers and up to US$10,000

for overseas publishers. For translation works, up to ₩20m is available for domestic publishers and up

to US$20,000 for overseas publishers.

The École Française d'Extrême-Orient invites applications for its field scholarships.

These are intended to finance research in humanities or social sciences applied to the history and

civilizations of Asia. Applicants must hold a BA, MA or equivalent qualification. Scholarships will be

awarded for periods of study of one to six months at EFEO or ECAF centers. MA students are eligible

for studies not exceeding two months. A monthly allowance worth between €700 and €1,360,

depending on the level of the applicant and the country concerned, is awarded.

The National Humanities Center invites applications for its fellowships.

A total of 40 residential fellowships for advanced study in the humanities are available during the

academic year. Most of the center’s fellowships are unrestricted. However, several are designated for

particular areas of research. These include one fellowship for a young woman in philosophy and

fellowships for environmental studies, English literature, art history, Asian studies and theology. The

center seeks to provide at least half salary and also covers travel expenses to and from North Carolina

for fellows and dependents. Applicants must hold doctorate or equivalent scholarly credentials.

Applications from outside the US are welcomed.

Applications and letters of recommendation must be postmarked by October 1, 2013.

The Nordic Africa Institute invites applications for its study scholarships.

The primary purpose of the scholarships is to offer the scholarship holders a one-month stay at the

Nordic Africa Institute in order to facilitate use of the institute’s library collections on contemporary

Africa including books, periodicals, newspapers, and government publications.

Students pursuing Africa-oriented studies at universities and colleges in the Nordic countries,

regardless of citizenship, are eligible to apply. Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in order to be

eligible. The scholarships are also intended for Africa-oriented journalists and textbook writers.

Scholarships cover travel expenses to and from Uppsala and include a shared office and free

accommodation.

The Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange invites applications for

its senior scholar grants.

This program supports full professors or senior scholars based in Europe who wish to take one year's

sabbatical leave in order to do research and writing within the foundation's area of Chinese studies in

the humanities and social sciences. Grants are worth up to €40,000.

Applications accepted between 1 August and 15 October annually. This call is repeated once a year.

The European Association for Chinese Studies invites applications for the Chiang Ching-kuo

Foundation library travel grants.

These allow visits of up to one week for specialized research in sinological libraries in Cambridge,

Heidelberg, Leiden, London, Oxford, Paris or Munich. Applicants should be sinologists based

permanently in Europe and preferably be paid-up members of EACS. Applications from non-members

will be considered, especially in case of students and scholars no older than 35 years if accompanied

by a recommendation letter from an EACS member. Priorities are given to applicants as follows:

central and eastern Europe students;

western Europe students;

central and eastern Europe scholars;

western Europe scholars.

NOVEMBER

STINT och the National Research Foundation of Korea inbjuder ansökningar om medel inom

ramen för Korea-Sweden research cooperation programme.

Syftet med programmet är att öka universitet och högskolors konkurrenskraft genom utveckling och

etablering av internationella samarbeten. Programmet ger stöd till projekt med hög vetenskaplig

kvalitet som tydligt bidrar till involverade lärosätens verksamhet.

Projekten kan vara upp till fyra år, förutsatt att halvtidsrapport efter två år godkänns. Föreslaget

projekt måste omfatta minst en svensk och minst en koreansk part.

Sökande till STINT ska vara verksam vid universitet eller högskola i Sverige och disputerad. Parallellt

ska en motsvarande ansökan inlämnas av koreansk samarbetspart till NRF. Det ideala

samarbetsprojektet innehåller aktiviteter som omfattar både forskning och högre utbildning, dock kan

STINT stödja renodlade forskningssamarbeten. Det är särskilt angeläget att yngre forskare och

doktorander deltar i utbyten.

Budgeten för varje år får vara maximalt SEK200,000.

The University of East Anglia’s Sainsbury Research Unit for the Arts of Africa, Oceania and the

Americas invites applications for its visiting research fellowships.

Two fellowships are available to conduct research for publication pertaining to the arts in Africa,

Oceania and the Americas. Fellowships have a normal duration of three months. Fellows are expected

to give at least two presentations, in the form of lectures or seminars, during the fellowship period.

Scholars in the fields of the humanities, social sciences, anthropology, art history, archaeology, history

and related disciplines are eligible to apply. Applicants must hold a PhD, though advanced PhD

candidates may occasionally be considered. The fellowship stipend is £396 per week for 12 weeks,

plus return travel costs up to a maximum of £750. The fellow must reside in Norwich for the duration

of the fellowship except for brief research trips.

DECEMBER

The East-West Center invites applications for the POSCO visiting fellowships. The program invites

outstanding scholars and policy makers principally from North America, but also from Australia, New

Zealand and European countries to engage in policy relevant research on political, security and

economic issues in northeast Asia, including Korea. The program focuses research and discussion on

issues regarding northeast Asia that are of common concern, such as globalization, economic

regionalism, economic restructuring, political change and the changing East Asian security

environment, including security on the Korean Peninsula.

Fellows will be in residence at the center for one to two months and undertake research and writing on

an agreed upon topic. Fellows will be paid a stipend and round trip economy airfare to Honolulu from

their home base.

Applicants must submit the following by December 31, 2013 to be considered for the fellowship

period from March 1, 2014 to February 28, 2015.

The Center for International Development at Harvard University invites applications for

resident fellowships through the sustainability science program.

The 2013-14 fellowship competition focuses on regional initiatives pursuing an integrated perspective

on sustainable development in India, China and Brazil. It will also include a crosscutting research

initiative to integrate work focused on the theme of innovation for sustainable development. Although

the competition is open to strong proposals in any area of sustainability science, preference will be

given to applicants whose proposals complement one or more of the following four initiatives:

governance innovations for sustainable development – building public-private partnerships in

India;

sustainable development of the energy sector in China – challenges and options;

sustainable development of the Amazon and its surrounding regions – the interplay of

changing climate, hydrology, and land use;

innovation and access to technologies for sustainable development.

The fellowship competition is open to advanced doctoral and postdoctoral students, and to mid-career

professionals engaged in activities to facilitate the design, implementation, and evaluation of effective

interventions that promote sustainable development. Stipends last 12 months and are worth up to

US$28,000, US$35,000 and US$55,000 depending on the fellowship.

The Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange invites applications for

its dissertation and postdoctoral fellowships.

Two kinds of fellowships are available:

PhD dissertation fellowships for doctoral candidates who are not Taiwanese citizens and are

completing their dissertation in Chinese studies in the humanities or social sciences at an

accredited European university;

postdoctoral fellowships for junior scholars affiliated with an accredited European university

who have received their PhD within five years of the date of application, do not hold a full-

time position and wish to undertake research in Chinese studies in humanities or social

sciences.

PhD dissertation fellowships are worth up to €12,000 over one year, while postdoctoral research

fellowships are worth up to €18,000 per year over a maximum of two years.

The application deadline for both programs is January 15.

EACS Young Scholar Award 2014

The Board of the European Association for Chinese Studies is pleased to announce again the EACS

Young Scholar Award (YSA). The purpose of this award is to encourage research in Chinese studies

among young scholars, especially, but not exclusively, scholars studying and working at European

institutions.

We very much welcome submissions from candidates world-wide. The Young Scholar Award is made

possible through generous support by the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly

Exchange. It was first awarded during the 2004 biennial conference in Heidelberg. Almost all papers

submitted by shortlisted candidates in previous competitions have now appeared as peer-reviewed

publications. The next YSA will be announced at the XXth biennial conference in Braga and Coimbra,

Svenska Institutet erbjuder studerande att söka läsårsstipendier för studier i Kina.

Folkrepubliken Kina erbjuder dels nio stipendier som innebär fri undervisning, kost och logi i

studenthem, dels tio stipendier som innebär endast fri undervisning. Studier kan bedrivas i kinesiska

språket, men även andra ämnesområden kan komma ifråga. Stipendierna kan endast sökas för ett helt

läsår från september till juni. Både studerande med kinesiska som huvudämne och studerande som har

annat huvudämne men med minst 60 poäng i kinesiska vid ansökningstillfället är behöriga att söka.

Sökande som tidigare inte har studerat i Kina prioriteras.

Stipendiebeloppen är för närvarande lägst CNY1400 per månad. SI ger ett bidrag till resan på cirka

SEK8,000.

The Hans Rausing Endangered Languages Project invites applications for its individual

postdoctoral fellowships.

Fellowships provide support costs for individuals for 12 to 24 months.

Applications are welcomed from researchers of any nationality to undertake projects in any part of the

world. Applicants should have held a PhD for less than five years, and should have qualifications in

linguistics and experience in linguistic fieldwork.

Funding is worth up to £150,000.

The European Association for Chinese Studies invites applications for its young scholar award.

The purpose of this award is to encourage research on Chinese studies among young scholars,

especially those studying and working at European institutions. Candidates should be 35 years of age

or below and their rank of academic employment should be below that of associate professor or senior

lecturer or the equivalent ranks in other systems. The members of the jury welcome papers of high

scholarly promise engaging primary sources, secondary scholarship, and innovative research

methodologies relevant to the field.

Papers should be written in English and only single-authored papers will be accepted. Papers should

preferably be unpublished; however, candidates may submit papers that are under review for

publication in a scholarly journal at the time of the 2014 conference. The YSA jury hopes to nominate

three finalists. Nominees will be invited to Portugal to attend the 2014 EACS conference where their

papers will be presented during a special session. EACS will sponsor travel costs, per diem expenses

as well as the conference registration fee of all shortlisted candidates. The winner of the YSA will be

announced during the conference and honored with the award of a certificate.

STINT och the Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education

inbjuder ansökningar om medel inom ramen för programmet joint Brazilian-Swedish research

collaboration.

Syftet med programmet är att öka universitet och högskolors konkurrenskraft genom utveckling och

etablering av internationella samarbeten. Programmet ger stöd till projekt med hög vetenskaplig

kvalitet som tydligt bidrar till involverade lärosätens verksamhet.

Projekten kan vara upp till fyra år, förutsatt att halvtidsrapport efter två år godkänns. Föreslaget

projekt måste omfatta minst en svensk och minst en brasiliansk part.

Sökande till STINT ska vara verksam vid universitet eller högskola i Sverige och disputerad. Parallellt

ska en motsvarande ansökan inlämnas av brasiliansk samarbetspart till CAPES. Det ideala

samarbetsprojektet innehåller aktiviteter som omfattar både forskning och högre utbildning, dock kan

The Nordic Africa Institute invites applications for its travel scholarships for fieldwork in

Africa.

These enable scholars associated with Nordic institutions to travel to Africa for research purposes.

Research should concern developmental issues in Africa and emphasis is placed on the social sciences,

including anthropology, history, economics, human geography, political science and sociology.

Archive studies in Europe may also be funded.

The scholarships are open to students registered in educational programs at universities, colleges and

other research institutions in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. The scholarships are

intended for MA and PhD candidates regardless of citizenship.

Scholarships cover travel expenses to Africa and contribute to the cost of local travel and living

expenses.

The Association for Asian Studies' China and Inner Asia Council invites applications for its

small grants.

These are open to association members with special interests in China or Inner Asia. Applicants are

specifically encouraged in the following areas:

collaborative projects;

organization of conferences and seminars;

short research trips for dissertation-level graduate students;

specialist or regional newsletters disseminating important information to their respective

fields;

translations of scholarly books and articles;

travel by scholars working on a common project in Taiwan and North America.

Grants are worth up to US$2,000. Junior and independent scholars, adjunct faculty, and dissertation-

level graduate students from any country are encouraged to apply.

The Korea Foundation is inviting applications for its Korean studies fellowships for European

MA and PhD students.

Applicants majoring in Korean studies at a university in Europe are eligible to apply. Fields of study

supported by the program are Korea-related coursework and research in the humanities and social

sciences, culture and arts and comparative research related to Korea. Natural sciences, medical

sciences and engineering fields are not eligible. Fellowships are for one academic year only.

Recipients may reapply in succeeding years for additional support. The fellowship will cover tuition.

The American Historical Association invites entries for the John K Fairbank prize in East Asian

history.

This prize is awarded annually for an outstanding book on the history of China proper, Vietnam,

Chinese central Asia, Mongolia, Manchuria, Korea or Japan, substantially after 1800. Anthologies,

edited works and pamphlets are ineligible for the competition. Books with an imprint of 2013 are

eligible for the 2014 prize.

The Daesan Foundation invites applications for its grants for research, translation and

publication of Korean literary works.

These promote the translation, research and publication of Korean works to foster the globalization of

Korean culture and to advance cultural exchange.

Those applying for a grant to support translation work must have full linguistic command of Korean

and the target language. Any professor, researcher, student in the area of Korean literature or any

translator of Korean works may apply for the research grant, and institutes working in the area of

Korean literature overseas may apply for a grant to support publications.

The grant amounts are dependent on the target language. Grants for work in English, French, German,

Spanish or Japanese are up to ₩15 million, for work in Chinese, Russian, Turkish or Eastern European

languages are up to ₩10m, and for work in other languages are up to ₩8m. An additional ₩5m may

be available for works excessively large in size.

The Infinity Foundation invites applications for its educational research grants.

The purpose is to support projects involving research or development of educational materials which

aim to improve the authenticity of portrayal of Indic traditions in the educational system. Topics

covered may include: philosophy, history, religion, science, art and sociology, as they pertain to the

educational curricula on Indic traditions. Topics of particular interest are:

the compilation or development of works detailing the contributions of India to world

civilization in math, science, technology, philosophy, religion and art;

explorations of India's role in world history, including: the dissemination of literacy or

spiritual values throughout Asia; the European exploration of the new world; the rise of the

industrial revolution; and the Aryanization of German national identity;

the examination of India's influence on modern and post-modern literature in the west;

the study of Indic contributions to modern psychology, cognitive sciences and the emerging

worldview;

bringing to light India's influence on the development of European and Asian languages and

linguistics;

the re-examination of the current social conditions of India, including women's issues, caste,

poverty and pollution;

the critique of the portrayal of India in American educational materials such as textbooks;

review of media portrayals about India and Indian civilization or critiques of these;

the organization of conferences or composition of conference papers on these topics.

The grants are open to scholars, teachers, visionaries and spiritual leaders; as well as traditional and

nontraditional educational, scientific, cultural and religious institutions.

The Infinity Foundation is calling for project proposals to undertake a scholarly, journalistic

analysis of the coverage of India and Indian religious traditions in the US media.

Such an analysis should develop criteria for measuring both the quantity and quality of this coverage

relative to other major world regions. Analysis of the quality should take into consideration the

authenticity of the portrayal however defined, as well as the degree to which simplistic, stereotyped

images or outright misinterpretations occur in major media sources. Such analyses could be historical,

focusing on a single media source over a period of time, or wide ranging, looking across a variety of

spiritual leader. Grant recipients will not be chosen from any particular educational or scientific

institution, or from any particular geographic location.

This aims to support education, research and other activities to deepen understanding of Korea around

the world, by distributing various publications and multimedia materials about Korea, either in Korean

overseas. Universities, national and public libraries, research institutes, museums, and other art and

The Singapore Agency for Science, Technology and Research invites applications for its

A*STAR research attachment program.

This collaboration program provides research opportunities to PhD students from partner universities.

Applicant students will spend one to two years at an A*STAR research institute under joint

supervision of the staff in that institute and the partner university.

PhD students who originate from outside the region and whose home university supervisor has a

collaboration with an A*STAR researcher are eligible to participate.

Awardees will be provided with a monthly stipend of SG$2,500, an airfare grant of SG$1,500, a

settling in allowance of SG$1,000, and medical insurance.
