Safe CurveInnovationNEW EQUIPMENT

Bag-in-Box has launched a new type of seals on its wine application

bags. In each corner, in addition to the usual seals, two supplementary

radial welds help to protect the wine inside. This new triple protection

system is called Safe curve and is possible thanks to the new toolings

that have been installed on all the wine bags production lines.

TWO PL ANTS

This modification has been implemented in the plants of ibi (spain)

and epernay (france) in order to harmonize the manufacturing pro-

cess and thus be able to supply exactly the same products in case of

force majeure.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF CORNERS ON A

BAG-IN-BOX BAG?

There are three main types of

corner by straight welds on all

four sides. The across each cor-

ner. This is also called a “Delta”

or “K“ weld. Finally, instead of a

straight weld across each corner,

it is possible to make the seal

rounded (also called a “radial”

seal).

WHICH TYPE OF CORNER IS

THE BEST SOLUTION?

All types of corners offer accept-

able quality. The main advantage

of rounded or cut-off corners

is that when the filled bag is

inserted into the erected card-

board box (as well as subsequent

transport) the damage to the film

in the corners is generally less.

The primary reason for this is that

as the filled wine bag collides with

the bottom of the box, rounded

corners spread out the force of

impact more evenly and prevent

pointy folds from forming. This

can reduce somewhat the risk of

leakers.

DOES IT MEAN A FILLING LINE CAN ALLOW ITSELF TO MAKE LESS OF AN EFFORT TO CONTROL THE VIO-LENCE OF ITS FILLING OP-ERATION IF IT USES BAGS

WITH ROUNDED CORNERS?

Absolutely not! The use of bags

with rounded corners in not an

excuse. The process flaws that

damage the bag during the filling

process have to be corrected

and improved continuously since

excess damage can still result in

leakers and will also increase ox-

ygen permeation if small cracks

appear in the barrier film.

Expertise

Scientific expert from Vitop talks about the different types of welds and the good practices to adopt while using them.
