WDNA 2017 Annual Report

President’s Report

2017 started off with an exciting vibe, more people wanted to play our beloved sport and our member base has grown to an astonishing figure. Over 60 clubs enjoyed the venue at WDNA, some of which were new, all of which were welcomed to participate in our great game, I hope you all enjoyed Season 2017. Jenkins Physiotherapy supported us once again during competition days and nights and we are pleased to advise that this sponsorship will remain for the next 3 years. Thanks to Tim and his team who provide professional services to our members. Channel 9, Court 9 were such a big part of the season and it was very exciting to see some of our teams getting involved in the weekly weather report winning themselves some TV appearances and some great prizes along the way. Channel 9’s sponsorship allowed us to upgrade our media package which has fast become a great tool for presentations, thank you Channel 9. Northside Nissan provided us with new cars to view each week and who would have thought so many netballs could fit into a car, Courtney Bruce certainly knew from her travels how much you can put in a car and one of our lucky members won a prize. Thank you, Northside Nissan, for your sponsorship in 2017 and the following 2 years. Winter 2017 Season ran under newly appointed Director of Competitions, Sallie HoyPoy. The Grand Final results had so many Clubs experiencing the joys and nerves of their last game for the season which was testament to Clubs working well with Sallie during the grading process in the earlier part of the season. Games were competitive, and many had close score lines. Congratulations to everyone who participated in the season and to the hundreds of volunteers, we just can’t do it without you. The Men’s competition is fast growing and showcasing a game at WDNA throughout the season saw a very large number of our members supporting that game. The court and surrounding areas were 4 and 5 deep and people watched in amazement at how well men play the game, I’m excited to see more. Clubs you need to be thanked for getting on board with us with every endeavour in making our Association such a great place to play netball. The No Limits program was supported by 4 clubs this season, 3 of which registered players and assisted in their upskilling and further understanding of the game. Thanks must go to those who extended themselves to assist in the program. Some Clubs host their own tournaments and fund raisers and we have grown to support these special events. Special to me this year was the Jane McGrath fund raiser day where we all wore something pink, the support shown to that and every other event touches me and clearly shows that away from netball we have many caring individuals, thank you all for wanting to make a difference in someone else’s life. Spring 2017 had a waiting list and a huge increase for those who wanted to participate in this competition. New lights being installed from Courts 28 – 57 will allow many more to take part next year which remove that wait list. What I love about Spring is that players come together as friends and play as a team to keep up their skills and to have fun.

WDNA 2017 Annual Report

Netball WA continued to work with us during the season keeping us updated and informed of all changes and new competitions that are coming our way. Competitions for Boys and Men and Fast 5 will soon be here so get ready for some more exciting games to play and/or watch. I would start practicing those long shots for the extra points in Fast 5! Netball WA can only be commended for their show of support for our Association amongst others. Our Region, West Coast Netball Region enjoyed great success this season. Trish, you and the Region Board are very supportive of our Association and it was a pleasure having you assist us some Saturdays when the numbers were low. Our members are a great part of the Warriors program whether playing, coaching, managing or supporting and your program Adopt a Warrior is a very successful initiative creating opportunities for athletes to work together at different levels. On behalf of the Board and Association members we wish you the greatest of success for 2018. Board members appointed in 2017 worked tirelessly for the Association and my role continued to be an enjoyable one. I would like to thank Yvette, Sallie, Keti, Mal, Leesa, Jenny and Kerry for your contribution to 2017 and the planning of 2018. Forward Planning was a positive and constructive weekend, and we are set for another great season ahead. I very much appreciate everything you all do, we contribute a lot of volunteer hours and we have much to look forward to turning the corner into 2018. Administratively, we are led by our Association Manager, Lorraine Ward. Lorraine is supported by Lara Simpkins who has settled into her new role this year. The member base continues to grow which is great for our Association and our AUDO (Rachel) and ADO (Sarah) have also noticed an increase in their program numbers. Rachel has run successful umpire programs and we have received positive feedback from our members. Sarah has now completed a full cycle of seasonal netball and is well poised to steer us into 2018. Our venue is well positioned for growth and 2018 will be no different when it comes to taking in the new registrations. Lorraine is the conduit between staff and the Board and is highly thought of amongst our members. To the many who dropped by the match office window to extend thanks to Lorraine and the team, thank you for showing your support and appreciation of them, your kind words and gifts were received with thanks. To our Clubs, our Association continues to grow because you all want to play netball on a Saturday or Wednesday. The colours of our clubs show such unity for our sport and that really humbles me. You are all major contributors to the success of the Association and clearly you all love playing netball. WDNA is growing at a rapid rate and we are thankful for the 57 courts we have which are filling faster every year. Our programs are widely recognised and that means more for you to look forward to particularly when I think of TACT and the opportunities, so many athletes are given. I hope that you all enjoy some down time over the break and I look forward to seeing you all again in 2018. On behalf of myself and fellow Board Members, may I take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, take care and remember to always hug and spoil those close to you, enjoy the break everyone. Warm Regards Judy McInerney President, WDNA

WDNA 2017 Annual Report

Competition Report – Director of Competitions 2017 was another fantastic year of Netball at Wanneroo Districts Netball Association and I felt proud to be a part of such a wonderful community. A huge thankyou to the Board and staff including admin, umpiring and player development, Canteen and Saturday office staff who all played such an important role in facilitating another successful year. Our Winter season this year grew by an extra 30 teams. It is great that we have so many players wanting to be a part of our illustrious competition, however the challenge was how we were going to fit everyone in as we are limited by the number of courts and our inability to use the far courts at the 4.15pm timeslot. The decision was made to move the Year 2 Net Set Go teams to play at 2.45pm and I thank these clubs for accepting our decision and giving their young girls and boys a brilliant introduction to the sport. It is always challenging to juggle the timeslots to fit all of the teams, however The City of Wanneroo is working hard to provide lighting on the far courts during the Christmas break which will help considerably as we progress into 2018 and beyond. Our goal is to continue to grow our Association and we are constantly working towards achieving this goal. This year we also trialed playing our Net Set Go players in school year groups as opposed to age groups. Like all change, there is always arguments for and against, however all clubs embraced the decision. Netball Australia is continuing to develop the Net Set Go program and engage young players to participate and continue in our sport so we will work with them to integrate this into our Association. A huge thankyou to Helen and Christine Robinson, our independent graders, who gave their time to assist with the initial grading this year. Whilst there can only be one winner in each division we had many close finals and the highlight was the 12 & under Division 1 Grand Final that ended in double overtime. A fantastic result for all. Thanks to all of our clubs for providing volunteers and working together with the Board to ensure that we have a safe and supportive environment for players to enjoy their netball games and for allowing us to develop players and umpires throughout the season. They say it takes a tribe to raise a child, then it takes a community like ours to raise a netballer, and while not everyone with go on to play for the Diamonds, the skills they learn will continue to benefit them in many aspects of their lives. Congratulations to all and I look forward to seeing you all at Kingsway in 2018. Sallie HoyPoy Director of Competitions

WDNA 2017 Annual Report

Competition Report – Association Development Officer TALENTED ATHLETE & COACHES TRAINING PROGRAM (TACT) We were extremely fortunate to have Lyn Pemberton continue to work as a mentor to coaches and players for the 2017 TACT program. I would also like to thank Lyn for her guidance this year, particularly throughout the TACT planning and trial phase. It has been fantastic to see the players development throughout the program, but also during the Association Championship weekend. We were also proud of our first WDNA No Limits team, who participated at the Championship and won a bronze medal. At the Smarter Than Smoking Association Championships, held over the June long weekend, of the 17 teams competing, 9 teams made their respective division final with 4 of those teams being successful – Open, 15s Division 2, 14s Division 1 and 13s Division 3. Runner up teams were 15s Division 1, 14s Division 2, 13s Division 1, 13s Division 2 and 12s Division 3. Well done everyone. Another amazing effort by all involved in the 2017 TACT programs, the coaches, the players and the parents (team managers and those that assisted with all trial sessions) and I would like to sincerely thank everyone for their support of this program. Also, thank you to the Board of WDNA, in particular, Leesa Cramond, Director of Umpiring & Development, for their support. Without all the above the Association would not be able to offer such a wonderful program. Congratulations to the following players selected in 2017 State Teams from the program: State School Girls 12 & U State School Girls 15 & U Shae Fitzgerald Elizabeth Dronfield Lily Gilsenan Emily Hathaway Paige Hancy Charley Rafferty Sofaia Talemaira Train-On Players Zoe Coates Chelsea Cook NET SET GO Due to the large number of teams registering for Net Set Go – Set (7/8s and 8/9s) we were unable to run Net Set Go – Net on Saturday mornings, replacing them with Friday afternoons. The Friday sessions proved popular for the Winter Season of Net Set Go - Net where we had 80 players participating in the 10-week program.

WDNA 2017 Annual Report

The Spring program increased significantly from 2016, with 80 players registering for an 8-week program. Half of these returning from the winter program. The Net Set Go programs main focus is participating, whilst learning netball related skills (throwing, catching, balance, running & jumping skills) with fun games included. I would like to sincerely thank all the coaches who assisted with winter and spring, these programs would not be able to run without your assistance. SCHOOL HOLIDAYS PLAYERS CLINICS Our Clinics were once again hugely popular with our members in the 7/8s through to 11 & U age groups with 226 players registering for the April School Holidays and 260 for the July program. I would like to thank all coaches who were involved with the holiday clinics, also to the TACT coaches who assisted at the clinics. We are also looking to add another clinic over the October school holidays in 2018. ESSENTIAL SKILLS This program for players aged 10 – 12 is designed to develop their basic netball skills of footwork, ball work, attacking and defending. I would like to thank all coaches who ran the training sessions over the 4-week program. TALL TIMBER PROGRAM Having participated in a similar program when I was younger, I was extremely excited to get this program up and running this year. I look forward to this program, growing and developing over years to come. Being my first year in the ADO role here at WDNA, I would like to thank Lorraine, Rachel and Lara for their support and assistance throughout the year. Sarah East, Association Development Officer

WDNA 2017 Annual Report

Competition Report – Association Umpire Development Officer WINTER WDNA was represented by six umpires in the West Australian Netball League season and well represented in the WCNR regional academy. Throughout the year one of our senior squad members achieved her National A Badge, bringing our tally of National A Badges to six. We also awarded ten National B Badges during the season, bringing this total to sixteen umpires within our squad to hold this badge. It is phenomenal that we have twenty-two umpires that can umpire to a high standard and is testament to how our development of umpiring is coming to fruition. During the 2017 season, we saw our first suspensions and ordering off following on from the rule changes in 2016. WDNA will provide education workshops throughout the season for managers/coaches on the procedures that need to be followed for injury/blood and to revise the implications of the disciplinary procedure for their team. Again, this only be successful if attended by coaches/managers/players etc. SQUAD WDNA invited several umpires back to the Academy in 2017, whilst also allowing any Nationally badged umpire to apply to become a member. This resulted in us boosting our numbers to 80 for the winter season. We have a strong tradition of promoting working together, to help develop ourselves and each other. It has taken many seasons but the sense of striving for the best not only for ourselves but, also our colleagues is coming to the forefront making our squad a group of cohesive, yet unique individuals ranging from new C Badges to seasoned umpires. By setting up a program to teach umpires how to teach other umpires ensures that we have a succession plan for when our older umpires decide to retire and allows us to build depth and ultimately increase our numbers by increasing the volume of educated coaches available. Each coach must go through a cadet program, which is continually being adjusted, to achieve umpire coach status. This program is voluntary and takes a minimum of 15 hours. Premier Martial Arts and Fitness continued to be a great support to our Academy, offering free pre-season classes and a mid-season session, enabling our umpires to attain and maintain the required fitness levels to umpire within our association. The messages of ‘teamwork’, ‘giving thanks to those that support you’ and ‘believe and you will achieve’ that Premier promotes makes them a fantastic sponsor and a partnership that we hope will continue for many years to come.

WDNA 2017 Annual Report

GREEN SHIRTS 2017 saw the Green Shirt Program become popular again with our numbers increasing. To be selected into the program several training sessions had to be completed, culminating in a trial process to ensure that the umpires wanted to learn and could control games. 90 umpires initially trialled and 55 were selected for the full program and 16 were selected for our train on program. A further 30 requested entry following the school holiday clinic and 15 were accepted, totalling 86 green shirts for the winter 2017 season. Education on what to expect from Green Shirt umpires is continually being delivered out to coaches and managers and the message appears to be getting across. Yes, the green shirts will make mistakes, yes, they will miss certain things, they are being coached to improve their umpiring just as coaches are coaching the players and it is frowned upon if a coach berates and abuses a player on the sideline. As this is the case with players I invite you to question why it’s ok for spectators, coaches, managers and players to berate and verbally abuse umpires? All this does is knock the confidence of the umpire and result in even less correct calls being made. It is always worth mentioning that players, coaches and managers have all agreed to abide by the code of behaviour which states’ rules of the sport are mutual agreements which no one should evade or break’. Coaches should coach within the rules and discipline their players accordingly should bad behaviour be displayed on court. Of the 86 green shirts that were in the program, 48 were badged (56%). EVENTS/WORKSHOPS/CLUB/GENERAL The Smarter than Smoking Association Carnival took place over the long weekend in June at the State Netball Centre. WDNA took a squad of 33 umpires, umpiring over 200 games over the 3 days. Several of the umpires who were available for finals also received finals game – a great achievement for our association. The Umpire School Holiday Clinics were again a success throughout the year with 44 attending in April and 30 in July. We will be looking to introduce an October clinic focussing solely on Net Set Go rules in preparation for the Spring season. Throughout the year the Association ran several workshops: Game Management and Rules Discussion, whilst they were well attended by the umpiring academy there was little attendance from clubs. This is disappointing as many of the court attendances from Saturdays are from scenarios that are covered within these workshops. Six clubs approached us to badge their umpires and eight badges were awarded.

WDNA 2017 Annual Report

SPRING Moving into our fourth year running an Umpiring Academy in Spring we were aware that Spring is the optimal time to commence umpiring as the games are more relaxed and allow the umpires to develop skills without the general repercussions from the sidelines. Prior to the start of the season we ran 8 hours of training for the green shirt umpires which culminated in match play, a HUGE thank you to the clubs that sent players down – it was an enjoyable evening and was a great success, lots of learning by our umpires!! This year the Umpiring Academy consisted of: 22 non-umpiring coaches; 36 squad umpires and 74 Green Shirts – our biggest ever! A total of 42 Green Shirts obtained their National C Badge, with 2 club umpires also being successful. CONCLUSION AND AWARDS Awards Most Improved Junior Umpire - Darby Gartlan Most Improved Intermediate Umpire - Georgia Burden Most Improved Senior Umpire - Georgie Gillibrand Most Consistent Umpire - Rachel Williams Total Number of National C Badges Awarded - 92 Total Number of National B Badges Awarded - 10 With each year that I have been the AUDO of this Academy, I have witnessed a shift towards players wanting to umpire and finding they have a great affinity for it. This should be nurtured as we are not looking to turn players away from playing the game, in fact the opposite – when a player knows the difficulties of umpiring, they have a better respect for officials and of course it adds another dimension to their playing game – we all know we play better when we know the rules. We have had many enquiries from club umpires wanting to develop their umpiring but not wanting to ‘let down their clubs’ by umpiring for squad – please know that the knowledge they will acquire will benefit your club and of course they can still umpire for their club as well as squad. It really is a win-win situation for the sport. It is hoped that umpiring will continue to move forward and successfully develop during 2018 with clubs inputting their ideas and communicating their needs so that these can be met. I am looking forward to another successful year in 2018. Rachel Williams, Association Umpire Development Officer

WDNA 2017 Annual Report

Competition Report – Director of Facilities & Risk Management 2017 was a busy year for this portfolio. The year started with the completion of the storage facility and it being made available for use by our clubs. Hopefully the clubs that have hired out cages are finding it worthwhile. We then moved onto a State Election campaign, and negotiations with both sides of politics and as a result of these talks were made identical promises of $500k should the respective sides win the election. In the meantime, design and planning of the new floodlights for the far courts went on in earnest with the City of Wanneroo. The designs and tender process for this project are now complete and with a contract due to be awarded soon. It is expected that all works will be complete by February 2018. All 30 courts will be lit with state of the art LED lighting. With the State election run and won, confirmation of the $500k funding was received from the new Labor government and planning of building upgrades could begin. The City of Wanneroo engaged architects and engineers to come up with options regarding the best options for us. The board agreed with the Councils recommendation of a new single storey building, retaining some of the old structure. The project is awaiting final council approval and once this is granted the final design phase can begin. At this stage construction is scheduled to begin in October 2018, with completion in April/May 2019. Total estimated cost at this stage is $2.6 million. On top of this the usual maintenance is required to be carried out, and we thank the staff of City of Wanneroo for their assistance. During the off season, some repairs will be made to the eastern courts. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Associations staff, the Board and President for their support. Malcolm Wright, Director of Facilities
