The plantation of oil palm requires vast land so massive deforestation occurs to ensure it.

· The effect on the ecosystem due to the decrease of the forest has been a concern.

· It pollutes the river and soil because pesticide and chemical fertilizer are used to keep the palm oil plantation.

· Forest fires

· Some people who have lived in the forest lose their place to live without their permission.

· Animal comes out because there is not enough food in the forest anymore.

What is the problem?

Why should we care?

Palm oil destroys rainforest.

Indonesia’s tropical rainforests are among the world’s most diverse. They provide critical habitat to species including highly endangered Sumatran tigers, Sumatran elephants and orangutans. The Indonesian government has announced plans to convert approximately 18 million more hectares of rainforests, an area the size of Missouri, into palm oil plantations by 2020.

Palm oil threatens forest people.

Tens of millions of Indonesians rely directly on rainforests for their livelihoods. A single palm oil plantation can destroy the forests, watersheds, and forest resources of thousands of Indonesians, leaving entire forest communities to face poverty, many for the first time.

By 2020, the use of palm oil is expected to double, as the world’s population increases and as people – especially in countries like China and India – become more affluent and consume more manufactured goods containing palm oil.

As I mentioned before, a lot of things that you use everyday contain palm oil, so that means it’s so simple to decrease production of palm oil. The three R’s; Reduce, Reuse and Recycle is the earth-friendly actions in many ways.

What will happen in the future?
