I want to pursue my studies further! I go on the internet to search for the subject I want to specialise in, and what do I get? Three million websites that I need to surf through to make my choices. It does not stop here, as within each website there are hundreds of pages of course listings that I have to search through to achieve my objective. Is this course what I want? Maybe this is better? Oh that sounds more interesting! And being intrinsically inquisitive we tend to become so googlised to the extent that we forget at times why we went to the net and what on earth we were searching for to begin with. The battle of choices grows bigger when we think of where to go and factor in how much to spend etc.
And then I begin to think, why cant there be a university that is so international that a student can go to and find his or her ultimate objective. For example I can be studying a course from Harvard, another from Oxford, a third from Insead, the forth from Auckland and so on; I will have my credits weighed on an internationality rec-ognised standard and the lectures can be seen and heard on video conference, chat room, emails and the thousands of other electronic and telecommunication devices available today. Blackboard, Moodle and Webct are used by almost all universities these days and the choice of on - line de-grees are growing by the minute. But will this be acceptable and recog-
nised? I dont think so; hold on a second, why did we approve of globalisation in every aspect of life, but not in education?I would think that the globalization of ed-ucation is the easiest of all trades. Think about it this way:1. All educational products are easily
transmitted electronically through words
2. The theories and practices that all the institutions teach are globally recog-nised.
3. The lectures are available internation-ally - and the experts in each field are easily found.
4. The textbook can be bought over the internet.
The list goes on - and the advantages in globalising education are yet to be de-termined. Wouldnt this make our life that much easier?
Think of the savings that can be achieved. Think of the time that people can save while achieving their educational aspira-tions and dreams. Also people like us will have easier time finding out if a students credits are transferable or not; all the ac-creditation bodies will have a much easier time as all the subjects are standardised and streamlined.
However is this achievable? No, and defi-nitely not. The reasons are obvious. First, we are all proud of where we studied and would like our kids to go to the same place. We donate money to our university, and we back the research that is done by our university. Second the university it-self values itself more than any other. And third, education is a business like every other product, and every business wants to survive and most importantly be better than the others. No wonder all those rank-ing bodies are flourishing, and the stream of accreditation bodies are increasing as most of the worlds universities are not gen-erating appropriate graduates for what the industry needs.
To all the educators out there, lets have this objective in mind to save the future genera-tion from being lost.

This is a line we used to convince students that studying trades is actually rewarding. By trades I mean studying to become electricians, plumbers, carpenters, panel beaters, mechanics, hair dressers, chefs, painters and the list goes on. It is well known that people have different orientations; some go for professions such as doctors, dentists, engineers, lawyers, and accountants and some work better using their hands. For example, it could take you a life time to teach me how to change a tire but a minute to teach me an accounting ratio.
The aptitude of students in the Western world is evaluated earlier on in their academic life. Kids are encouraged at school to learn trade. Once these students learn it they can soon discover if they will excel in it or not. I have seen children work on machines and saw wood to make a toy cabinet; some made lovely shelves or even boats. Students who choose to be trade persons then enroll at their local college to learn more about their skill. The col-lege will complete the theoretical and practical teaching, and the student will then work (as part of the course) with real tradesmen who will train them and be responsible for them to complete their certification. Upon finishing this course, a student may decide to continue their university studies or become a tradesperson.
Now lets look at our side of the world. What do we teach our kids in our schools? Our curriculum does not differentiate between the different types of learners. We do have industrial schools, but students chose to go without a scientific reasoning. Thus it will be very difficult to convince students that to be a trades person may better fit their abilities.
One thing I must add here, can we tell the parents that their child is better suited for carpentry rather than the medical field? The answer is, No. Most of us look down on trades and consider them low level blue colour jobs.
We need to concentrate on this subject if we want to minimise im-ported labour, and by - the - way, imported labour is the main rea-son for looking down at trades as we pay them lower wages.
In the advanced world we call the plumbers pipe doctors as the
home is considered as a living organ, and plumbing functions in a similar way to the urinary system in a human beings. Thus, one would pay $60/hour easily to a pipe doctor whilst we might pay $45 for a doctors visit!

An invitation to be the Environment Ambassador!!!My letter is a call to my dear students who are travelling to their respec-tive institutions around the world to receive the honourable medal of becoming the Ambassadors of the Environment and to protect it wherever they go.
All the countries that the students will go to, have rules and regulations in regards to environmental protections. We ask that all of you abide by these rules and enjoy living in non - polluted environment. These countries look for a sustainable future for our generations, we are all asked to become a mile ahead and protect everything that can be protected from this environment.
Separating our garbage is a must in these countries, so please make sure to segregate your garbage and put each type in its respective container. The green police is strong in these countries and can trace even the small-est piece of paper that is placed in the organic collections. So inorganic and organic wastes need to be separated, glass, plastics, metals and paper wastes need to be placed carefully in its place.
Protection of the beaches, parks, reserves and conservation areas is ev-erybodys duty. We are all asked to protect these areas for our collective enjoyment.
Make sure to collect your own litter when you leave the parks and beach-es.
Water, electricity and gas are expensive; reduce your consumption of these items to save both your money and the environment.
Another important issue is protecting our culture and traditions; we can learn the best from the culture and traditions of the new country we are going to and at the same time preserve the best of our culture and tradi-tions. In my belief this is the most important characteristic of the Environ-ment Ambassador.
We wish you all the best in your studies and your life abroad; it should prove to be the best time of your life. Try to make the best of it, and bring back best practices so we can learn from you.

Imagine a university registrar, receiving two applications; one of them with grades that are all As, and the other one has one A and a couple of Bs and Cs. Which one would be chosen? We would think its an easy choice, but it is not. As many uni-versities are now finding out there are other qualities that we need to look at before accepting a student into a programme.
The qualities can include a magnificent student statement, a piece of artwork, work experience, membership in a voluntary organisation etc. The more diverse the background of the stu-dent is the better the chances for him or her to be accepted at a good university. Sporting activities are another way of telling the registrar that I am good at other stuff too. Sporting activi-ties challenges the person to compete and persevere. As the training required for one to become an athlete is really hard, if a student is able to achieve it then he can achieve anything in life given the right motivation.
Universities around the world are increasingly emphasising on qualities that are not related to educational achievements only. For example, they look for work experience, community work, membership in societies, writing abilities, inventions and any other items that a student has accomplished during his or her school year.

be involved in any of these things as we think that the time allocated to studying will tremendously be reduced.
Lets consider the issue of time. Children come back home from school, do their homework, which takes no more than two to three hours. What else will they do with their time? Watch TV? Play on the Play Station? I am sure that there are jobs in parents offices that could be done by their children and I am sure that all schools will have sport teams.
I remember when I was living overseas that chil-dren abroad love their schools and would not mind to stay after hours to train in sports or help out at the library, and this is so because the teach-ers are very close to the students. Teachers have means to find out the abilities and attributes of the students and help them to venture out into various fields that have very little to do with their educa-tion. Our teachers love to teach but they insist on concentrating on studying rather than extra curricula activities. Overseas school camps are almost compulsory; parents are the main contribu-tors to school camps. The outdoor activities that the students undertake during those school camps is tremendous with morning, afternoon, evening and night session handled by both teachers and parents. I have been to one of those camps with my daughter and had the most fun in my life. This involvement changed my life and the life of my daughter; we both look at the world differently and love to go places. Can you believe it if I told you that I learnt to play golf from that camp!!
I think that we, the parents, carry a great respon-sibility upon our shoulders and we have to help expand and shape our childrens future and per-sonality by enriching their learning experiences beyond the classrooms.

Middle Eastern parents always think twice before sending their children to a boarding school over-seas. Everybody understands this feeling, we are immortal clingers to our children, even when they grow up, get married, have kids, or fall ill they are still little kids in our eyes, and we cannot let go of them.
Excuse me for this preamble to explain why a market for overseas Boarding schools is not huge. How-ever the subject is getting a lot of discussions these days as, one parent came to my office and said that he is surely taking his son overseas since they dont teach his son art in the school. Another one said that they are not encouraging his daughter to do more sports, and so on! Of course this is not a shortcoming of our schools here. Our weather is too hot to make the students want to do extracurricular activities, like sports, drama, theatre, music, art, and other activities. These activities build up the person-ality of the students and allow him or her to join the world of work with confidence, and any university would also accept them in their programme given their international living experience.
A culture of cooperation, a culture of leadership, loving the environment and so on, is what we can learn by sending our kids to a boarding school. Of course girls and boys neednt be in the same school
or the same residence. And the amount of security and safety that is imposed upon the students is so huge that they do not think of doing anything wrong. {It will be a disgrace that a student does something wrong and in assembly his name is mentioned}.
I wish that I had this information when I had my children, then they surely would have all gone to a boarding school.
One has to be selective though. There is the IB schools, the American schools, and the British schools; there is also the Australian system, the New Zealand system and the Canadian system. Each has its advantages and each have differing prices. Also most of these systems are 13 years in total bar-ring the American and the Canadian schools, as the students do 12 years of schooling. The length is not a plus or a negative, its a system that these countries have accepted and have been successfully generat-ing qualified students since the time of dawn.

Proper ConductThe home stay family that you will be living with has opened their home to you and will consider you as a member of the family. They will be your guardians while you live with them. Therefore it is your duty and responsibility to abide with the rules of the household and respect the privacy of the other members of the house. You should be willing to share about your culture, traditions and background, and take part in family activities and outings.
Know Your PlaceLiving with a home stay family will provide you with a more familial environment. However, being in a new country, a new living environment and with people from different walks of life can be quite overwhelming. It is best to get to know your sur-roundings and for this you should ask for help from your host family, who will be welcoming to help you adjust and fit it. If you have any allergies or religious obligations, it is best to let the family know when you move in, so that they know how to deal with situation should they be one.
Cleaning Up after YourselfWhilst staying with your home stay family it is your duty to keep your room, common areas and bathrooms tidy. The host family may clean your room once a week, but if this is not offered, then it is your responsibility to clean up after yourself. The com-munal areas are used to converse with the host family and eat meals, if they are provided. The host family provides the laundry facilities, but it is your duty to wash your own clothes. Helping your host family is always a good way to show them your ap-preciation.
Internet and Telephoning TipsThe host family that you will be living with will provide you with limited access to the phone. You should keep your conversa-tions short. Some families may only allow you to receive calls and not make any outgoing calls. If long distance calls and international calls need to be made, a phone card should be purchased to make these calls. Internet access will only be pro-vided on permission, with restricted access, usually for checking mails, research or school work.

Summer camps are supervised programmes that usually takeplaceduringthesummertimeforchildrenofallages.Themainreasonssummercampsarearoundisforthedevelopmentofchil-drenseducationandculture.Everycamphasathemesuchasart,sports,religion,andhobbiesandsoonandsoforth.Sum-mercampsareruninplacesthatallowchildrentoenhancetheirskillsbothphysicallyandemotionallyinasafeenvironmentwhileinteractingwithotherchildrenandsupervisors.Thesecampshavenurturingandpositiveenvironmentswhere children canpartici-pate,develop,gainexperienceandconfidence.
Summercampsareplaceswherechildrencanunwindandes-capetheirdailyactivities.Childrenwouldbeenjoyingtheirtimeoutsideandawayfromtheirparents,spendingitwithotherchil-drenofsimilarages,andaresimultaneouslylearningalot.Theywillbelearninganimmenseamountofskillsfromthesecamps,alotmorethantheywouldbelearningiftheywereonvacationwiththeirparentsforexample.

Why should my child attend a sum-mer camp?One of the many reasons children should attendsummercampsistohavefun.Asummercamptakesplaceduring thechildrens summerbreak, so theyaresupposed tohavea lotof fun!Campsshouldmake them forgetabout school fora littlebitandmakethemostoftheirvacation.Summercampswill
stimulatethemtotrynewthingsbutatthesametimenotpushthem-thisisbecausetheirvaca-tionshouldbefunandrelaxing.Theywillletchildrenspendsometimewitheachother,awayfromtheirstressfuldailyroutine.
Moreover, summer camps will developyourchildspersonalstrengths -andthis isone of themain aims of a summer camp.Being in a campwithmany other children,yourchildssocialskillswillimprovenoticeably.
