Most of these photographs appeared on my blog, zencrafting, which launched in March 2008.

At the time, I was feeling burned out by my work and my daily responsibilities as wife and

mother. I was looking for a way to rekindle my creativity. For several months before that I had

been reading craft blogs and was wowed by the beauty that nature-inspired DIYers, artists, and

crafters were bringing to their daily lives.

What I discovered as I sought out natural materials to craft with was a profound sense of

connection to the natural world. My eyes were opened to the beauty around me in the most

humble places: rounded shale stones beside the lake, the tiny yellow seeds in a split pod beside

my driveway, the tight coil of a fiddlehead in the leaf litter of a wildflower garden. Looking

through my camera lens, I started noticing nature’s changing colors, textures, and patterns. It

transformed my perspective on life.

Zencrafting, the blog, represents the part of my life that shores me up. It is a place to capture

and remind myself of those fleeting moments of transcendence, beauty, and connectedness. My

posts are a way of holding on to hope, banking that rare commodity in times when life’s daily

demands deplete my reserves. Though it sometimes seems selfish and unproductive to take time

to hike, take photographs, craft, and weave a story from these elements for my blog, it’s what

fuels the rest of my life.Zencrafting, the practice, involves taming my constant sense of distractedness to focus on and

respond to the present. It helps bring a sense of mindfulness to moments with my family and

friends. It enhances my appreciation for my encounters in nature. It is an awareness of how each

season through the year--even the harsh Northeastern winter--has its own rhythm and unique

beauty. In my explorations of handwork, it means reining in my impatience to be more

accepting of process rather than focusing on outcome.

In short, zencrafting is a quiet reminder of possibility. It's that thin thread of hope that runs

through the fabric of my life. It’s my wish that these photographs help weave a ribbon of hopethrough your year. You can learn about the story behind each photo by reading the related
