Dear Principals and Teachers, Alcorta’s Compañía de Danza Folklórica, Corpus Christi’s premier Mexican Folk Dance Company, is once again preparing to dazzle audiences with their educational matinee production “INOLVIDABLE – Ballet Folklórico Dance Spectacular for Kids” sponsored by the H-‐E-‐B Tournament of Champions. “Inolvidable 2018” will enable schoolteachers to bring their classes to the Del Mar College Richardson Performance Hall on Friday, May 25, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. to experience dances from another country at no costs to the students, teachers or staff due to generous sponsorship and support. This educational and cultural event is the only one of its kind in the city. It was created by a high school Spanish teacher specifically for students to learn more about the various regions and folk traditions of Mexico. This event is held in compliance with the TEA guidelines for educational related absences relating to Fine Arts Education events. For over ten years, this program has been highly successful in creating a unique educational experience for students that offers exposure to professional performing arts productions, provides intellectual stimuli and development of non-‐verbal thinking skills-‐nurturing creativity for our area youth. In addition to the incredible dancers of Alcorta’s Compañía de Danza Folklórica, as a special treat to the community, the production will feature live musical accompaniment by guest musicians Ensamble Folklórico de Veracruz from Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico. Please share this field trip opportunity with your teachers and classes interested in attending this fine production. The deadline for submission of school reservations is April 27, 2018. Should you have any questions, feel free to contact me at (361) 742-‐4345 or by email at [email protected]. See the informational flyer and the reservation form attached. We hope you consider inviting your students to experience this unforgettable event. Sincerely,
Cynthia M. Alcorta Cynthia Alcorta Founder & Administrative Director Alcorta’s Compañía de Danza Folklórica

LA HUASTECA VERACRUZANA La Huasteca includes the northern part of Veracruz and stretches into Tamaulipas, Hidalgo and San Luis Potosi. The character of the regional music is boisterous and normally sung in a falsetto tone, and the traditional instrumentation is violin, jarana and guitar (or huapanguera). The sones or tunes of the area are performed at special fiestas called huapangos, which normally last as long as bodies are able to endure. The music and dances exhibit strong indigenous influence, as do the patterns in the clothing and the more reserved and humble movements. Danza de Negritos de Zozocolco Danza de las Cintas La Orquidea El San Lorenzo El Framboyan SINALOA: FIESTA DE LA TASPANA This suite is created after a tradition that began in 1865 and refers to every third Sunday in October, in the town of San Javier of the municipality of San Ignacio, where men with machetes in hand go out to clear the bush off the streets accompanied by the lively sounds of the banda. Once this is completed, the town gathers for a gand celebration called “Fiesta de la Taspana.” This artistic creation is a sample of the mestizo dances that are brought to the stage and demonstrate a representation of daily life. Here, we are introduced to the traditional music of Sinaloa, la tambora; but also find a fusion of sones from the matlachines and pascola dances of the northern indigenous communities.
El Gallo Los Amores de Julia La Loreta La Ardilla San Agustín La Cuichi CHIHUAHUA: ENTRALE A LA POLKA The dances from the northern region of Mexico (polka, redova y shotís), although derived from a number of Polish, Scottish and Czechoslovakian styles, have been assimilated by the people of this region and made into their own; giving them greater movement and joy. The vibrating personality of these dances is evident by the brave and masculine character reflected in the strong and agile footwork of the men, as well as grace and flirtatious nature of the women.
Por Mi y Por Mi Novia Parque Anahuac La Campechana ZACATECAS: PAPAQUI EN NOCHISTLAN In the town of Nochistlán, the citizens hold a celebration called Papaqui (a word of Caxcán origin that means celebration or party) in honor of their patron saint San Sebastián Mártir or as locals call him, El Güerito. After the conversion of the Caxcanes (the first residents of Nochistlán) to Catholicism, they were given statue of Saint Sebastián Mártir. When the Spanish realized the good fortune El Güerito brought to the natives, they decided to take back the statue. Irritated by the situation, the natives unleashed a battle with stones to recover the saint. In this celebration the papaqui includes the distribution of oranges, peanuts, snacks and cascarones (confetti eggs) to those present that symbolize the rocks used by the natives. Pinole (an ancient grain made of roasted ground maize) is also smeared their faces as a symbol of the mud the Caxcanes used on their face during battle.
San Sebastian El Papaqui La Chirriona El Medio Toro Chotis El Jarabe II JALISCO: LOS COLORES DE MI TIERRA Only when one sees and hears a young couple dancing to the accompaniment of traditional folk music, the mariachi and the enormous energy and movement involved in the sones from Jalisco, one can fully understand the joy, grace and beauty that are the hallmark of these people. Man and woman, both in their bright and colorful attire, dance with such intensity and passion to the music of the mariachis.
