What they are trying to make: users

Users of Makerbot and Thingiverse are highly-motivated, active, and not afraid to confront problems which comes along with new technology

They are not just trying to make products which solves their everyday problem, but they are also willing to commit to the whole community, which includes making/fixing 3D printer by themselves

What they are trying to make:

MakerBot IndustriesTheir first and constant goal is to make an ‘affordable’ 3D printer; they made a 3D printer with a restriction (but does not restrict their mind and ideas) of tools (laser cutter, hand, and off-the-shelf parts)

Along with Thingiverse, they made Makerbot an open source―they wanted 3D Printer to truly become users’

The whole environment they created is for users to not just be a bystander; 3D printer is not a black box and Thingiverse is not a museum

Example of community updating each other

$25 Mouse Trap (one day, eight designs)

Charles Pax (modified DXF file so that electronics can fit in the machine, also made MakerBot Automated Build Platform)

Skimbai created a modular cathedral under a restriction of maximum print size being 100x100x120

Of course, MakerBot Industries are working to update software and hardware
