Process Note!I had the great fortune to have
my talk electronically graphically recorded by Dan Porter. I’ve
added a few screen shots of his work “after the fact.”

Where are you most comfortable? Where do you learn the most? What stifles you?
Post talk: people expressed that it depended on context. Some people did have personal preferences. :
Assumption: Social Learning
(and? “social objects” and “socio-material networks la Engstrom...)

Many: Networks
We: Communities
Me: the IndividualPersonal identity,
interest & trajectory
Bounded membership; group identity,
shared interest, human centered
Boundaryless; fuzzy, intersecting
interests, object centered sociality
(Engeström)
Many: Networks
We: Communities
Me: the Individualconsciousness, confidence level, risk tolerance, styles, emotion Distinct power/trust
dynamics, shared forward movement or strong blocking, stasis, attention to maintenance, language Flows around
blocks, less cohesion, distributed power/trust, change
Many: Networks
We: Communities
Me: the IndividualIndividual access, personal learning environments …

Twitter, YouTube, Wikipedia,etc…
Individual Community Network
Where are you currently aiming
your efforts?
Click to next slide to see where
people started “filling in.”
This is the white board when I asked the question. Eventually there was a strong cluster in “community.” There was also a great comment about calling something community when it really wasn’t.
How?
• External support person(s)
• Learning Connection to a
domain-related network or
community
• Intentional external validation
How do we enable people to…
• discover & appropriate useful technology
• be in and use communities & networks (people)
• express their identity • find and create content• usefully participate
? ? ?
What is one area in your work where more
attention to the ecosystem of “me, we
and the network” might
support your purpose?
