“SAGRA DELLA CARNE DI CAVALLO A SECLI’ “”

In Seclì there is a very special tradition that gives this quaint place a strong connection to the true Salentinità. We're talking about the horse meat festival, or de cavaddrhu, as they

call it. A delicacy throughout Salento, to which the local people have decided to devote a

veritable feast. In Seclì in particular, there are several slaughter houses that specialise in this kind of meat, which is therefore fresh and of

excellent quality.

Where is celebrated?

“Sagra della carne di cavallo” is celebrated in Seclì, which is a small but hard-working town of Salento center , about 70 mt. above sea level , 28 km from Lecce, 15 from the Ionian sea. Some scholars trace its origins to the times of the war between Pirro and Roman soldiers .

How is celebrated?

There are different stands where you can taste the cuts of horse meat with sauce, in meatballs and rolls or roasted. A feast for the palate and the soul, as you will be immersed in a festive atmosphere which is fun and carefree. All of it accompanied by another local delicacy, good wine and lively and engaging music, typical of Salento. A perfect evening to spend on holiday with the family or with friends. A very special celebration, not to be missed.

If you go to Seclì, you’d visited Gallipoli which is a small town near near there.

The city is divided in the new town and the old town . The historic center of Gallipoli is comparable to a small island completely resting on the water and connected to the mainland - and the new zone - by a stone bridge . The old town is rich in ancient buildings and churches in the Baroque style , it was built by the Greeks as a labyrinth where all the streets intersect one another.
