DESCRIPTION

Workshop 5, September 24 Simulation - Cornerstone for Design Presenter: Michele Stuart, PMP, President, Efficiency Engineers This workshop follows on our theme of using simulation for design. In particular, simulation's application to the facilities and infrastructure aspects of healthcare. Michele Stuart, President of SIMUL8 Partner, Efficiency Engineers, discusses how simulation software has been used in an unusual infrastructure project in which Geisinger Health System wanted to optimize their pneumatic tube system. The pneumatic tube system forms the backbone on which clinical care happens, however (like many other operational systems) these systems don't get much visibility or discussion. This workshop will look at the project and discuss the benefits that can be realized by using simulation to improve operational systems like these.

When to Use Simulation for Design?

Waiting room too small?

Beds in the hallways?

Exercise the power and freedom allowed by simulation to examine

physical spaces and configurations from a design perspective.

Efficiency Engineers

Why Simulation for Design?• Experiment with physical layouts to see

the effects.

• Model a future space that does not yet exist.

• Select the best of several alternative designs/layouts.

• Modify the current state of your process or space.

Spatial Design Applications• Implementing a new patient flow in a

space-constrained ED.

• Maximizing utilization of limited inpatient beds.

• Anticipating downstream effects from an expanding OR.

• Restructuring a medical office to support increased patient volumes.

Design Example

Pneumatic Tube Systems

•Physical infrastructure of pipes, stations and blowers.

•Relatively fixed layout once installed.

•Expensive to install and change.

Why is DESIGN a concern?

•Changing conditions require revisions & expansions to existing systems.

•Complex interaction of components makes performance unpredictable.

Looking to OPTIMIZE system performance.
