Innovation in the 21st century

Innovation ♥ Technology

“We’re not in a technology business”

How long does innovation take?

Weeks, months, years?

20 YEARS or + 7.000 DAYS

Any idea that’s gonna reach a 1 billion dollar industry is at least 10 years old

Time for a Quiz!

Roller Skates & Inline Skates

1819 in the NetherlandsFour wheels and a shoe

1760Inline Skate with metal weels

1819First patented roller skate

1876Invention of the toe stop

1877Royal Indoor skating hall in Brussels

1970 & 1990From 1870 till 1970 = 100 Years

All of the first commercial roller skates had the same problems as in 1876

Lack of refinement.

Time for a Quiz!

The computer mouse

Xerox Mouse in 1981 - Patented! Apple mouse in 1984 - Patented!

Telefunken Mouse in 1965 - no patent.

30 Years!

Patenting something doesn’t mean you invented it.

It means you see the commercial value.

How about touch screens?

Casio Invisible Calcultator watchWrist watchMobile CalculatorTouch ScreenCharacter recognition

Sold & available in 1983 for 99 $

The idea: make calculations without someone noticing it...

“Touch screen watches are still far far away from touch screen computers...”

Plato touch screen computer in 1972

Plato ComputerComputer with basic math exercisesTouch ScreenPlasma TV!

Used in class as an experiment

If “touch” isn’t new...

How about Multi Touch?

Pinch & Zoom

Invented in 1983 by a company called Fingerworks

Zoom in & out on images & text

Not a real success. They almost went bankrupt until ...

Apple bought them in 2005

First iPhone in 2007

From 1983 to 2005 is 24 years!

“Oooh, we’ve tried that before...”

“Let’s invent something new”

The iPod mini

Multicolored, how clever!

What the f*ck havewe been doingthe past 25 years?

Instead of thinking of the next great idea, realize that the next great idea has been sitting on the ground in front of you for the past 10 years

My advice for 2013

Respect HistoryEvolution is keyRevolution is intrusive

Use history to evaluate new concepts and idea’s instead of only gut feeling.
