CONTRACTORS ON SITE

Employees have duties too. They should:

Follow appropriate systems of work laid down for their safety; Make proper use of equipment provided for their safety; Co-operate with their employer on health and safety matters; Inform the employer if they identify hazardous handling activities; Take care to ensure that their activities do not put others at risk.

All contractors visiting the site should be accounted for in the contractor’s visitor’s book. In addition, any contractor working on the site should have completed a Contractors Safety Conditions and Environmental Awareness form and be aware of any necessary safety rules or instructions for the area he will be working in.

A Contractors Safety Conditions and Environmental Awareness notice should be issued to cover the general requirements for safety awareness but more specific instructions may need to be given for particular areas or pieces of equipment. If this is the case the instructions should be written at the back of the safety guidelines acceptance form. The contractor must sign for receipt of the safety guideline notice on the acceptance form; it is then to be filed as a record of issue.

In some circumstances, particularly working at height or for protracted periods, the contractor will be required to issue a Method Statement to the Site. The method statement should outline all the work involved and his safety plan to complete it.
