Pratapgad Pratapgad (also transcribed Pratapgarh or Pratapgadh ) literally 'Valour Fort' is a large fort located in Satara district , in the Western Indian state of Maharashtra . Significant as the site of the Battle of Pratapgad , the fort is now a popular tourist destination.The Maratha king Shivaji commissioned Moropant Trimbak Pingle , his prime minister, to undertake the construction of this fort in order to defend the banks of the Nira and the Koyna rivers, and to defend the Par pass. This fort was constructed by Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj , the Chhatrapati of the Maratha Empire . [3] The construction was done under the supervision of Hiroji Indulkar, in the year 1656. Ahmednagar Fort The Ahmednagar Fort is located in the heart of the city of Ahmednagar , [1] Maharashtra . [2] It was the headquarters of the Ahmednagar Sultanate . In 1803 it was taken by the British in during the Second Anglo-Maratha War . Later it was used by the British Raj as a prison. Currently the fort is under the administration of the Armoured Corps of the Indian Army. The fort was built by Malik Shah Ahmed (after whom the city of Ahmednagar is named) in 1427 CE. [4] He was the first sultan of the Nizam Shahi dynasty and he built the fort to defend the city against invaders from neighbouring Idar . [4] Initially it was made of mud but major fortification began in 1559 under Hussain Nizam Shah. It took four years and was finally finished in 1562. Kolaba Fort Kolaba Fort (sometimes Kulaba Fort or Alibag Fort ) is an old military fortification in India. It is situated in the sea at a distance of 1–2 km from the shores of Alibag , 35 km south of Mumbai , in the Konkan region of Maharashtra , India . It is a popular tourist destination and a protected monument. [ The first mention of Kolaba fort is when it was chosen by Shivaji to be fortified after the whole of South Konkan came under his command.

Ajinkyatara

Ajinkyatara ( meaning "The Impregnable Star") is a fort on one of the seven mountains surrounding the city ofSatara in the Sahayadri Mountains of Maharashtra, India. It is a 16th Century fort and now also holds the television tower for the city of Satara. This fort has been the place where several pivotal moment in Maratha history took place.

The fort is located at Ajinkyatara Mountain, which is 3,300 feet high. As the fort is in the higher altitude, visitors can enjoy a magnificent view of the entire Satara city.

In 1708, Shahu Maharaj won Ajinkyatara, which remained with the Marathas till 1818. The Ajinkyatara fort is a major historic place of Maharashtra, and was very vital as one could keep watch over the entire South Maharashtra.

RajgarhRajgad (literally meaning Royal Fort) is one of the forts in the Pune district of Maharashtra state in India. The fort is 1318 meters above sea level. Formerly known as Murumdev, it was capital of the Maratha Empire during the rule ofChhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj for almost 26 years, after which he moved the capital to Raigad Fort. Treasure found at an adjacent fort was used to fortify this hill.

The diameter of the fort at the base is 40 km making it difficult for anybody to lay siege to it, adding to its strategic value.

LohagadLohagad (Marathi: लोहर्गड, iron fort) is one of the many hill forts of Maharashtra state in India. Situated close to the hill station Lonavala and 52 km (32 mi) northwest of Pune, Lohagad rises to an elevation of 1,033 m (3,389 ft) above sea level. The fort is connected to the neighboring Visapur fort by a small range. The fort was under theMaratha empire for the majority of time, with a short period of 5 years under the Mughal empire.

RamsejRamsej or Ramshej Fort is a small fort located 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) north-west of Nashik, in the Indian state ofMaharashtra. Ramsej fort saw the war against Mughal Empire for six and a half years.[when?] The first killedar (leader) was Suryaji Jadhav, but after five and a half years he was transferred and a new killedar was appointed. Mughals conquered Ramshej Fort by paying bribe to the new killedar.[when?]

Sinhagad

Sinhagad, Sinhgarh, or Sinhgad (The Lion's Fort), is a fortress located roughly 30 kilometres southwest of the city of Pune, India. Previously called Kondhana (Marathi: ोंढाणा), the fort has been the site of many important battles, most notably the Battle of Sinhagad in 1671. It was also strategically located at the centre of a string of other forts such as Rajgad, Purandar and Torna.

Perched on an isolated cliff of the Bhuleswar range of the Sahyadri Mountains, it is situated on a hill rising 700 metres above sea level. Given natural protection by its very steep slopes, the walls and bastions were constructed at only key places; it has two gates – the Kalyan Darwaza in the south-east and the Pune Darwaza in the north-east.[1]

Suvarnadurg

Suvarnadurg (translation: Golden Fort, also spelt Severndroog in English, a spelling sometimes also used forSavandurga near Bangalore[2]) is a fort that is located on a small island in the Arabian Sea, near Harnai inKonkan, along the West Coast of India, in the Indian state of Maharashtra. The fort also includes another land fort (small) called the Kanakadurga at the base of headland of Harnai port on the coast. Building of the fort is credited to Shivaji, founder of the Maratha Empire, in 1660. Subsequently, Shivaji, other Peshwas and the Angres further fortified the forts for defence purposes.[3][4]

The literal meaning of Suvanadurga is "Golden Fort" as it was considered as the pride or the "feather in the golden cap of Marathas". Built for the Maratha Navy for defence purposes, the fort also had a ship building facility. The basic objective of establishing the fort was to counter enemy attacks, mainly by the colonialists of Europe and also by the local chieftains

Vasai

Vasai (English  i / ̍ v ɑː se ɪ / ), historically known as Bassein or Baçaim is a historical suburban town north of Mumbaiin the Maharashtra state of India. It forms a part of Vasai-Virar city.

The Portuguese built Bassein Fort here to strengthen their naval superiority over the Arabian Sea. In the 18th century, the fort was taken over by the Maratha army and fell in 1739 after a three-year-long campaign.

The British then took over the territory from the Marathas in the First Anglo-Maratha War
