UNIT 2 THE EARTH WHICH SUPPORT MAN

VOLCANOES Volcanoes are caused when molten

rocks flows out to the earth surface through fissures that are caused due to the movement of plates.

Volcanic Mountain

Volcanic Eruption Some volcanoes erupt the lava

out with a great explosion and some others, silently.

TYPES OF VOLCANOES Based on the chances of eruption the

volcanoes are classified in to three. 1.Active 2.Exinct 3.Dormant

1. ACTIVE VOLCANOES Those that frequently erupt. example: Mount Etna in Italy.

2.EXTINCT VOLCANOES Active at a time. But will not erupt

again. example: Kilimanjaro in Africa.

3.DORMANT VOLCANOES Those that have erupted earlier

and not active in the recent past. But can become active.

example: Vesuvius in Italy.

MOUNTAINS An uplifted portion of the earths

surface is called a Hill or Mountains.

VARIOUS MOUNTAINS Mountains are divided into four on the

basis of their origin. 1.Fold mountains. 2.Block mountains. 3.Relict mountains. 4.Volcanic mountains.

1.Fold Mountains Forms as a result of the faulting on the

rocks. example: Himalayas, Alps

2.Block Mountain Forms as a result of the

faulting on the rocks. Example: Black Forest.

3.Relict Mountain Long term wealth oring on the old

mountain. example: Aravally.
