This study aims to examine attributes ofeach 22 indriyas and theirrelationswith5vastuandSarvstivdin'sotherdoctrines.Chapter,forthesepurposes,paysattention tothestructuralproblemrelatingto22indriyasintheAbhidharmakoabhyam.Inquiryintostructuralproblem relating to22indriyasisdividedintotwoparts.In firstparts,acomparisonbetweenthestructureoftheAbhidharmakoabhyam andofotherSarvstivdin's literaturesisdrawn.In second parts,examinationson whyVasubandhu adopted Indriya as second chapter's title of theAbhidharmakoabhyam insteadofSaskraaremade.Chapter beginswithmentiononindriya'sdefinition.Thedefinitiononindriyashowstwoimportantthingsthatindriyashavepowerfulfunctionandtheirattributesarevery predominant.In indriya'sdefinition aconception ofadhipatya also plays an important role.Sarvastivdin's criticism on twointerpretations ofthis conception differentfrom its orthodox view showsapparentlythatthiscategoryisbasedonactivitiesorfunctionsrelatedtolivingbeings.Therestofthischapterdealswithwhichoftheindriyasaresubstantialandsuperiortotheothers.Chapter iscomprisedofsixpartsaccordingtosixsubcategoriesof22indriyas.Eachpartexamineswhatiseachindriya'sownfunctionandisa

common point of dharmas which belong to each subcategory,and alsoscrutinizesrelationsbetween22indriyasandSarvastivadin'sotherdoctrines.Inexamining firstsix indriyas,themostimportantissueisaboutsubjectofperception.OnegroupofSarvstivdinmaintainsthatindriyais,theotheronegroupassertsthatvijnais,butSautrntikaregardsthisproblem itselfasmeaningless.Sexualindriyas,as theirname shows,is based on biologicaldifferencebetweenmanandwoman,butthescholarofAbhidharmagivesthemanothermeaning thatthey arefoundationsofreligiouspracticesand moralactions.Nextthree subcategories overlap with some factors ofcitta andcitta-viprayukta,soMahvibhaaexplainsindetailsthereasonsforwhyonlythefactorsofthesecategoriesarecalledindriya.SummarizingMahavibhaa'sexplains,thesefactorsrelatetoonlylivingbeings,andhavewiderscopeofactivityandmoreconstantfunctionsthantheothers.ThelastthreeindriyashavecloserelationwiththestagesofreligiouspracticetoattainNirva.Chapter dealswith twoopinionson whatvaluehas22indriyasinstructureoftheAbhidharmakoabhyam,andthischapter,forappreciatingthese,focusesontheproblem what,betweenindriyaandsaskra,ismorecompatibletoexplainfunctionofdharmas.Forthisproblem,wearenecessarytopayattentiontotheseexplains:Saghabhadradescribesfunctionastobringresult,andregardslivingbeingsasoneofsuchfunction'smaincondition.Fa-bao(,Beop-bo)says,"Saskra has two means ofconditioning thing()andconditionedthing().Conditioningthingissaskraascauseandconditionedthingissaskraasresult. saskraascausemeanspowerfulfunction."
